This is an ongoing FDL series from the national tour for THE UPRISING. You can order The Uprising at Amazon.com or through your local independent bookstore.
MINNEAPOLIS - During this whirlwind book tour, I've had trouble keeping up with the minute-to-minute trajectory of television's political debate. However, I didn't know that it is now considered out of bounds to talk about John McCain's support for staying in Iraq for 100 years. Watch this clip of me debating GOP hack Terry Holt on Fox News late last week to see what I'm talking about:
You'll notice that Fox News anchor Megan Kelly interrupts me when I mention that McCain has said he is OK with having America stay in Iraq for 100 years. She says that's taken "out of context" and that I'm spinning, while Holt chuckles. Have I missed something here? Are we now no long allowed to talk about McCain's statements on Iraq?
Here's the video of McCain saying he doesn't mind if American troops are in Iraq for 100 years. Here's CNN's report of McCain defending that statement. Here's the video of McCain doubling down, saying that in fact he's OK with America being in Iraq for 10,000 years.
Yet, somehow, mentioning this is billed as unfair by the media, and laughed at by Republican strategists.
Admittedly, this is an interchange on Fox News, which leans Right in its coverage. But still - it seems absurd for any media to bat down a relevant discussion about McCain's incredibly extreme position on the most important national security issue we face.
Let me be clear: I appreciate Fox asking me on to discuss politics and my book - I really do. For all of us trying to get out a progressive message, we need to take the media opportunities as they come - especially when much of the traditional "liberal" media blatantly ignores progressive voices in favor of promoting the same old Serious Voices from Washington. And I think an interchange like this is a good one to have - even if I'm being berated as "spinning" by mentioning the undebatable facts of what John McCain has repeatedly said.
As THE UPRISING shows, there is a very powerful uprising on in this country - it is about a backlash to things like the war, and about a backlash to an media/political Establishment that tries to crush debate on major issues. The more that backlash gets a hearing through media interchanges like this, the more that backlash will intensify - and the closer our uprising will be to achieving real change.

Oh yes, it’s so unfair to repeat that 100 years thing.
you were greaton Colbert. great to see you here!
Where will you be in Minneapolis tonight.
Very bizarre clip.
hehehe
David!
How wonderful that you are here and have found a forum in r/t.
What a great post, and a better book!
I’m from DenCo and now living in the SouthWest. I sent you a Welcome em when you first got there, and I hope you are finding it agreeable to you.
I had to leave. I couldn’t take the rethug presence in DenCo. EVER. Any you moved there and not only are standing it, i imagine you are CHANGING it.
And I thank you.
It is nothing short of wondrous that you post here now. We’re lucky to have ya
“we” meaning Colorado AND FDL!
Good job on GOPTV!
OK, I watched the clip and that newsmodel was just rude and dare I say “snippy”. You weren’t spinning, you were repeating what the candidate himself said. This “out of context” stance has been taken down several times here already, so you are in good company, David.
It just figures they would claim you are spinning when the other guy said “McCain is going to put America first”. First, I don’t believe it. And second, WTH does that mean?
What did you expect? You went on FOX. Don’t waste your energy.
The context is supposed to be that the 100 years is OK as long as the troops are not facing daily violence.
So I ask, “How does Senator McCain propose, specifically, to end the violence directed at the US troops (as well as all the other violence ongoing in Irak)?”
Could you feel the intelligence being sucked out your brain while on FOX?
Hopefully it is not a permanent effect.
Hey, I think it’s great that you went on Fox. I don’t think it was a waste of your time, at all. You never know which ears are there, and you always take the meeting, of course.
But, I thought that Fox always did the…
No, wait, don’t say Spin…
Oh, gosh sorry, did I interrupted myself?
(Did I hear that correctly? )
Oh brother….
You did a beautiful job…polite job…of calling Megan Kelly out.
Ah, busted…check your question. Who there would be doing the sucking? The Blond? I don’t think so. You don’t need David’s brain whan you have that fabulous hair and clever, sweet and oh so funny, wink, on-air personality.
(Howz those sweet (k)nuckles these days?) :)
Hi David — I would posit that whatever topic you raised first would be met by a scoff & an accusation of spin from the FOX anchor, and a chortling right-winger in the background. You could test this theory by raising another topic first, on your next FOX appearance, and see if they deride your first rejoinder right off the bat.
It’s what they do.
Congratulations on keeping your cool! I hope you have a chance to test my hypothesis.
Also, of the models McCain uses, Germany Japan and South Korea, only South Korea is part of the The Coalition of the Willing maintaining only 933 troops.
Maybe by words: I heard him again this evening saying how successful the surge is. I think he is convinced.
Amy Goodman on Tweets.
Thanks, but, I caught just the end of that. Wow, what a contrast between those two women, huh?
Great post David. Can you give us a link to the column where you discuss the VP choice?
Fox News website: actually spelled Megyn Kelly. Fox bio says she worked on Alito confirmation hearings, scooter Libby trial. Wikipedia says she appears often on Brit Hume and Bill O’Reilly–no spin, riiiight.
i think david’s gone.
*sigh*
Thanks for your kind words on the previous thread. Now I’m off too, to watch a movie with my daughter.
It seems to me that either David got stuck in traffic somewhere maybee, or there was one of those book tour agenda glitches. I know, they happen.
So, I was out at a meeting this afternoon and had an hour to kill before picking up sonny boy from school, so I pulled into a coffee shop and bought the LA Times and read a few articles. Blackwater’s bright Future by Jeremy Scahill and The White House didn’t lie about Iraq by James Kirchick. Ack! Good thing I didn’t order split pea soup. And was reminded why I don’t get the Times delivered to my door every morning.
Polar opposites. Screeching blond republican vs. dignified brunette democrat.
Not to mention…um, did I see a Las Vegas sign behind the Blonde?
Jane’s upstairs.

Loo Hoo, you may want to pur liberally before you read. Scary stuff.
A masterstroke of understatement.
David, it’s only unfair to Fox News and their viewers if you bring the truth up! They have a hard time handling it and there have been some witnesses who observed Fox and their viewers melting like the Wicked Witch of the West upon hearing the truth. See?
OT. Heard on NPR that McCain supports drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Some reporter should ask him “You mean, like China drilling off the coast of Cuba?” and see if he takes the bait. that would be another “confusing the facts” point that could be made should he by chance not be on top of the news enough to know about that lie.
I think the meaning of McCain’s “100 years” speech is the symbolism. He did say, at least when he was defending that speech, that he meant that he was alright with that as long as U.S. soldiers weren’t being injured or killed.
What the speech symbolizes, though, is that he has stated no plan to do things any differently. We could be there for 100 years of bloodshed if we continue to do what the Bush Administration is doing.
So, in answer to your question, yes, you’re allowed to discuss McCain’s foreign policy, and they’re allowed to make largely irrelevant statements in his defense.

David, next time perhaps you could consider resupplying the context for them.
I’ve found that it usually makes what was said worse than just relaying the soundbyte.
Of course you’d probably have to talk over some pipples, but I’ll bet you can learn to live with that.
