The Republicans/right apparently think they can beat Barack Obama by smearing him and his wife Michelle. In one smirking effort after another, they keep telling each other that the Obamas are "not like us," not American, not patriotic, not morally grounded. But when Americans listen to Obama himself, they're hearing something quite different.
If Republicans think they can beat Barack Obama on "family values," they'd better watch Obama giving a suprise "Father's Day" sermon yesterday.
Of all the rocks upon which we build our lives, we are reminded today that family is the most important. And we are called to recognize and honor how critical every father is to that foundation. They are teachers and coaches. They are mentors and role models. They are examples of success and the men who constantly push us toward it.
But if we are honest with ourselves, we’ll admit that what too many fathers also are is missing – missing from too many lives and too many homes. They have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men. And the foundations of our families are weaker because of it. . . .
. . . Yes, we need fewer guns in the hands of people who shouldn’t have them. Yes, we need more money for our schools, and more outstanding teachers in the classroom, and more afterschool programs for our children. Yes, we need more jobs and more job training and more opportunity in our communities.
But we also need families to raise our children. We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception. We need them to realize that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child – it’s the courage to raise one.
Barack is not just following the written text posted on his website; listen/watch as he embellishes the text when talking about taking personal responsibility and single women as parents and setting expectations for our children and ourselves. How will the Republicans respond to this:
Still, I know the toll that being a single parent took on my mother – how she struggled at times to the pay bills; to give us the things that other kids had; to play all the roles that both parents are supposed to play. And I know the toll it took on me. So I resolved many years ago that it was my obligation to break the cycle – that if I could be anything in life, I would be a good father to my girls; that if I could give them anything, I would give them that rock – that foundation – on which to build their lives. And that would be the greatest gift I could offer.
Or this:
The second [third] thing we need to do as fathers is pass along the value of empathy to our children. Not sympathy, but empathy – the ability to stand in somebody else’s shoes; to look at the world through their eyes. Sometimes it’s so easy to get caught up in “us,” that we forget about our obligations to one another. There’s a culture in our society that says remembering these obligations is somehow soft – that we can’t show weakness, and so therefore we can’t show kindness. . . .
But our young boys and girls see that. They see when you are ignoring or mistreating your wife. They see when you are inconsiderate at home; or when you are distant; or when you are thinking only of yourself. And so it’s no surprise when we see that behavior in our schools or on our streets. That’s why we pass on the values of empathy and kindness to our children by living them. We need to show our kids that you’re not strong by putting other people down – you’re strong by lifting them up. That’s our responsibility as fathers.
It's a fascinating speech, not simply for what he's saying about and to "fathers" in a mostly African-American church on Chicago's south side. He's also responding forcefully to every hit on his character without ever saying so.
And think about the powerful messages he's sending to all Americans, well beyond the African-American community:
-- We can't be led by adolescent attitudes and behavior; we need adults. When he ad libs, "any fool can be a father" it can also translate to "any fool can start a war." But an adult first thinks about consequences and takes responsibility for his/her actions.
-- He directly addresses women, particularly single women with children, who are carrying a heavy load: "You need help." We (men/our nation) have an obligation to address their needs.
-- Bullying is not strength; it hurts our communities; it has harmed our nation's reputation and security.
-- Empathy towards the plight of others is a virtue, not a weakness. So it's an acceptable moral foundation for public policy.
-- And we shouldn't settle for mediocrity; why not strive for excellence? We don't have to settle for an educational system that just get us on average through the 8th grade. And by the way, we sure don't have to settle for another D-, frat-boy President.

mornin’ all..
Good Morning!
This is a lot of what Cosby was saying and he got royally attacked for it. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
typo by the way:
Real family values. What a novel concept.
Great post, Scarecrow.
What can the Rethugs say to rebute this? Obama’s weak because he wants fathers to take responsibility? Obama’s weak because he whines about how hard single moms have it? Yep, this is gonna be good.
Thanks, Scarecrow. I wanted to hear this but hadn’t gotten around to it yet.
Again, Obama is the adult on the scene. Our country needs to return to adult behavior.
That’s exactly what I thought when I first heard the speech.
edit - rebut
ePreview is mah fren
Yes, I was wondering the same thing - of course,I think many people discredited what Bill Cosby had to say by talking about him as if he was just this crazy old guy.
I think it was more that Cosby embarrassed them. They’re still uncomfortable with the conversation. There are 4 hours of talk on Sunday mornings on WMNF Tampa, all African-American, and whenever this topic is raised you can hear the uneasiness in the hosts and callers. It’s something they wish would go away but feel helpless to do anything about.
I really like Obama’s take on personal responsibility. The Republic version comes off as “I’ve got mine, Jack”, and even more so after this.
Thank you for bringing this speech forward, Scarecrow. It’s a beautiful teaching moment, a furtherance of understanding what has shaped and continues to resonate from the very core of Obama.
One question:
What kind of father sends his children to a church where they will hear the hateful rhetoric of people like Jeremiah Wright and Fr Pfleger?
Thanks. Made a few edits. This speech gets richer every time I listen to it.
Good morning Scarecrow. That really was a great speech, worth watching in its entirety. I, too, liked all the implicit parallels for the nation as a whole, especially those pertaining to our sub-sub-par President, bullying vs. empathy, and irresponsible forays without follow-through or foresight. Well done.
I don’t think this is like the Cosby thing; this crowd was completely with Barack all the way, even as he took people to task.
Snakes in the water.
Setting high expectations. That’s a novel concept in our sound-bite society.
Caw ! Caw !
Happy Monday, everyone !
Barack is saying the same thing that Cosby said, except he is addressing the problem with more advice on how the youth have to behave in a mature manner. The MSM centered on a couple of phrases of Cosby and that caused the backlash of a very important talk by Dr. Cosby. The best part of Cosby’s speech (which the MSM duly ignored) was when he spoke of Asians who faced the same discrimination but worked harder and are now earning more per capita than “white Americans”. I think Cosby would have been better served if he had mentioned successful Blacks in his speech.
During the primaries, Obama gave a great speech where he told the crowd, “When your kids do poorly in school, don’t go cussing out the teacher.” The audience roared in approval.
Didn’t the flood take care of
himthem ? *g*Here’s what happens when we set low expectations. I’m talking to you, George W. Bush.
perhaps we now have a generation who is ready to hear it and hear it from a powerful adult. Here’s hoping.
It’s not just about fatherhood, as Scarecrow pointed out, it’s about accepting responsibility for one’s actions—something that has escaped our society on just about every level. It is a problem that goes back to the earliest biblical stories and has been a lesson having to be taught over and over and over again. Is anybody listening? Does anybody care?
Apparently not. The old, toothless ones seem to just keep hangin’ in.
I’ve recently read several articles that makes me think that Obama is not only speaking to the black community - he’s speaking to a whole lot of people all over the place. I read an article which talked about how many men, due to their concerns about the financial situation in divorces, won’t marry, about men who feel that if they don’t make a certain amount of money, no woman will have them, etc. I also read an article recently(and this was from a UK paper, but I think there is just as much of it here in the US as over there)where they were describing women who have no interest in getting married - that their interest in career is strong enough that they don’t feel they have the time or the interest in working on that level of a relationship. I think marriage as an institution may be in a certain amount of trouble - and it’s not just the black community and it’s not ‘teh gay marriage’ thing either.
I’ve seen several MSM stories of this. They were caught by surprise, because it wasn’t on the “campaign schedule,” and wasn’t officially announced. But word leaked out Sunday monring and there were thousands who showed up.
The MSM are reading this almost exclusively as a lecture to black fathers — the Cosby analogy — but none has grasped that he’s talking to a larger audience.
African-Americans certainly don’t have the market cornered on immature, irresponsible males.
Well said on all counts. What was excellent about the speech was that he wove all these threads together–starting with the biblical, and going through the personal and communal, with the national all the while the sub-text.
A leader who thinks and communicates on multiple levels. Gosh… that’s kinda refreshing.
Nor will they. They’re much more comfortable with their racist attitude.
You’ve probably heard this one, but, I’ll share it anyway. The female pastor who taught one of the lay speakers classes I’ve taken called them Jesus and the 12 stooges. Said even Jesus had to spell it out, over and over.
Yep. It’s astonishing. He’s functioning at a completely different level from McCain. You can have this or have Mr. Cottage Cheese on lime green jello. (h/t Attaturk)
Noticed that, too. I sometimes wonder if they simply don’t actually watch/listen at all to entire speeches like this. Or if they do if they’re just dense or stupid. There must be reporters on the trail who, even they’re moderately intelligent, know like Pavlovian dogs that the “story” that will get play is the one with the racial overtone, not the larger picture. I think they are trained to be superficial and sound-byte-y.
It infuriates me to no end. Barack could just as well be addressing their mediocrity.
But Olbermann will get it, if he sees it.
Hooray for Barack Obama! He’s going to uplift the majority of the people of our country when he becomes President of the United States. A strong America will also make the world happy too, because after the last eight years of George Bush who acted like a bully rather than a friend to our allies, the world is going to breathe a sigh of relief when Obama gets in!
“Blessed are the cheese-makers? Did he say cheese-makers?”
Gallup poll this morning shows Obama leading by only 2% over McSame.
How long is it gonna take for people to wake up?
Put differently, when is the Obama campaign going to start making McCain himself THE issue?
Well yes. That’s a part of prevenient grace… we all get it, even the duncehead mccheeses. :)
and, I for one can hardly wait for January. Oh, the joy of having a chance to redeem ourselves! Barack Obama!
didn’t obama leave his family in chicago when when he became a senator? i hope i have this wrong and that someone will correct me, because otherwise this rings a little hollow to me. like someone lecturing people about what they should do while considering it too unimportant for him to do.
can anyone help me out here?
Making McCain the issue - well if this author is right, they’d better be looking in other directions as well: He feels that McCain will be dropping out as soon as August..right before the convention.

Ah, the wonders of lime-green jello screens. Bet he’ll never do that again.
Jed had another good one a few days ago, too.
kathryn in ma has been trying to warn us about that possible for months - she’s been saying that we should be focusing on the republican brand and not mcsame.
That’s 2% of those who use land lines. Far as I’m concerned these polls are pretty much meaningless. They might be useful as an indicator of areas where the candidates might want to spread their message but I don’t think they’re anywhere near as reliable as they used to be.
Many of my friends have to leave home for 4 days to work and support their families … are they negligent fathers ?
How about those in the military who spend 15 months in Irak? Are they negligent fathers/mothers?
BO is going to campaign as if he’s 5 points down the whole time, or at least he should, if he wants to win by a big margin.
I am so angry I could SCREAM !!!!! I am mad because almost every headline I’ve read say “Obama call absent Black fathers to task! I didn’t hear Obama call them these absent fathers black. There are plenty of absent white Dads out there. Why do they twist every issue into a race issue! Damn!
Can you spell R-A-C-I-S-T? *g*
An awful lot of scared white folks out there, particularly in the corporate media. Scared of brown people and scared of their own shadow.
g’mornin’ scarecrow
i like it, but i guess he won’t be getting the absentee father vote…….or maybe it will motivate them to become more involved with/supportive of their kids……can always hope.

11:00 Detention of Terrorism Detainees
Tuesday the Senate will hold hearings on the origins of harsh interrogation techniques and last Thursday Guantanamo prisoners won the right to challenge their detention in federal courts. We take a look at how the post 9/11 detention and interrogation system was organized and what it’s achieved. A new investigative series in McClatchy newspapers concludes that abuse and mismanagement led to the radicalization of innocent people caught in the effort to round up terrorists.
Guests
Roy Gutman , foreign editor, McClatchy Newspapers; author ”How We Missed the Story: Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban and the Hijacking of Afghanistan”
Col. Stuart Herrington , retired U.S. Army interrogator; reviewed detainee operations at Guantanamo and in Iraq for the U.S. Army
Matthew Waxman , former deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs (2004-2005); also held high ranking positions in the Department of State and National Security Council; currently, professor of law at Columbia University
This might be reason - “You and I know how true this is in the African-American community. We know that more than half of all black children live in single-parent households, a number that has doubled - doubled - since we were children.”
I don’t see where Obama singled out fathers who are black. He seems to be talking about any errant father. But the press is saying that this was aimed at the African-American community.
Yep. Really good point. I heard a new story a little while back where National Guards were being interviewed and the soldiers were lamenting what a great toll their serving took on family life. Divorces way up and it making it difficult to keep their jobs at home. And the right wingers are worried about gays threatening marriage. Sad, sad, sad.
i did not say that. but it does sound seem to me that obama may be saying that.
OT
Our pal Lanny Davis has found a home. At Pox Noise.
Anyone here surprised? Raise your hands.
Let me add to my 43 - they’re also scared by Senator Barrack Obama, regardless of his colour. He stands against all they stand for.
no.
we are negligent for sending them.
“How many times in the last year has this city lost a child at the hands of another child? How many times have our hearts stopped in the middle of the night with the sound of a gunshot or a siren? How many teenagers have we seen hanging around on street corners when they should be sitting in a classroom? How many are sitting in prison when they should be working, or at least looking for a job? How many in this generation are we willing to lose to poverty or violence or addiction? How many?”
“But we also need families to raise our children. We need fathers to realize that responsibility does not end at conception. We need them to realize that what makes you a man is not the ability to have a child - it’s the courage to raise one.”
“We know that education is everything to our children’s future.” - Obama
well, *that* was an interesting read. I’m more in the camp that the Repub’s won’t mind losing this one too much, because things are so screwed up, it’ll be easy pickings for Repubs, once a D is in office, to point to all of the country’s problems (which THEY created), and blame Obama for not having them all instantly fixed.
Another almost OT
Are we next?
Morning, all. I haven’t been able to understand the lime green jello business. Lime green jello is a pretty color. That backdrop was more cooked spinach.
That’s a hand that might play to the instant gratification disease ridden but to others, not so much.
every computer and teevee screen has a different color balance. It looked kind of like leaf green to me, but the analogy worked anyway.
((((( Loo Hoo )))))
I think it’s in reference to a famous dessert for old folks - Cottage cheese on Lime Green Jello - is that correct ?
I hadn’t heard of it until now.
As I’ve offered many times, I just don’t believe it.
Now, I’m not part of Obama’s campaign, so I can afford to not believe it,
but McCain’s own base isn’t fired up about him or the election, while Obama’s campaign has created record turnout and fundraising numbers.
I think he’s gonna win this going away. When Sen. Clinton’s supporters take a sobering look at their choices, common sense will overcome any ’spite’ vote they are considering.
Well, ya can get arrested bein’ a pamphleteer too.
or for wearing the wrong t-shirt in the wrong place.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Tend to agree. Sure hope so.
Have a Great Day, eh ?
Not so sure about that. The racist factor is for real. The young woman who cuts my hair cares about the same things I do but is not a well informed voter. I tell her the important points like, uh, THE SUPREME COURT. She agrees. But she is having trouble imagining herself vote for a black guy. She admits to feeling a little prejudiced and is uncomfortable about it. There are probably LOTS like her out there.
McCane himself being the cottage cheese. That part worked! Hey, Petro.
As I’ve offered many times, I just don’t believe it.
Yeah, but the media can and will play on this (”where is the Obama Bump”), projecting to their last corporate greedy breath that the Repubs are still a viable option.
Playin’ to teh Stupid…
Please remember to continue the calls to Obama’s office, asking him to take a forceful position against telecom immunity as Hoyer and Friends are pushing for.
Obama’s Phone No. - 202.224.2854
bmaz made me spit up a good cup of coffee with that phrase … *g*
Is school over for you ?
Here’s a breath of fresh air. In these times it would be revolutionary.
I had a 20 year old friend of my daughter tell me last night that she thinks she’s got it right that Obama is a Muslim. I told her no, he’s Chrisian, but what difference would it really make if he were Muslim?
Back to the bit about McCain may not be the R candidate. I’m wondering what the theories about that are. Pick someone else, with little time for the opposition to out his skeletons? I’ve read here by a few that they think just won’t leave office. I’m very skeptical about that. What do you people think about McCain not being the candidate?
Did you Edwards fans catch his interview on Sunday ?
Apparently he no longer rules out being Veep, if asked … Woo Hoo !
Yes. I’m officially on vacation. (With a horrible cold…)
I don’t know what to think about that, demi. It sure doesn’t make any sense to run McCane. Can you imagine the flip-flop YouTubes?
Yep, I still wanna hear how the past 3 months that the Dems spent campaigning against each other was better than if they had spent all that time and $$$ fighting these false messages. (pardon the terrible grammar)
My fav cure for a cold is a Double Scotch(neat) followed by a 5 Km run … sometimes, I forget about the run … *g*
sometimes, I forget about the run … *g*
LOL.
I would venture to guess most elected representatives in DC leave their families in their home districts for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which is to have a chance at a ‘normal’ life away from Washington.
Besides, this is apples vs. oranges.
The issue is not ‘being there’ only in a physical sense, it is being there financially and emotionally as well.
I recently told my wife how wonderful it was that when one of Obama’s daughters (probably) asked Michelle “Where’s daddy?”, she was able to respond “He’s busy running for President of The United States”.
Hey, even my 14 year old could do that and easily.
Summer colds are the worst. So sorry.
and
Petro…that is very good news indeed. I’m actually smiling .
This is one that should not be lost. Attaturk did a post the morning after McCain’s speech, saying McCain in front of the green background looked like cottage cheese on lime green jello. Attaturk also does early a.m. at Eschaton, and it appeared there. Howie Kurtz? or someone at WaPo picked it up and attributed it to Atrios, but Atrios said it was all Attaturk’s fault.
It’s out there and has now sparked a cottage industry.
Where I grew up it’s considered salad!
Hey, at least I remembered the important part … *g*
cottage cheese industry?
Where I grew up, Back Bacon is considered salad ! *g*
Where’s daddy? She was probably asking which state/city he was in?
Seems to me those are some very bright and grounded young ladies….
LOL !!!
g’morning firedogs
I want to go off topic, I hope it’s ok, but this will be on topic for quite some time and I really want everyone to have this link as a resource for the discussion
it reports the abuses of imprisonement without habeas protection, it is exactly what I extrapolated would be happeing;
bingo
the statement techical term “habeas corpus is too dynamci for most people to follow without real life examples and progressives need to get on board with those examples;
“people are being arrested to settle old scores, to put a competitor out of business or to solve religious issues and without habeas protection those people framed will never be allowed to prove they were framed…and framed by a terrorist himself who will get off to commit more acts of terrorism because his depravity is not exposed”
ok, that’s too verbose but you get the idea
I think this speech ought to go viral, like Obama’s Race speech, that the young generation will watch over and over …
i am not judging obama by my own views - i am questioning if he is living by the standards he is calling for others to follow. it’s a potential issue of hypocrisy - not a judgement on his parenting.
(((((
debbiedemi )))))After the “Young Dick Cheney” thread last night you all are cracking me up. My keyboard is looking like a lost cause.*G*
Any breaking news is ON TOPIC here. That’s from the first of McClatchy’s series on detention practices. The second story in the series is on line now.
Hey, Big P. How’s the writing?
Excellent ! First one is done, am now seeking agent(s) presently …
I guess I don’t get the distinction you’re making. Are you suggesting that Obama believes he is a bad father and still has the gall to lecture to others regarding fatherhood? While he admits to mistakes, I don’t believe he thinks he’s a bad father. From what I’ve seen, I don’t think so either.
It also seems to me to be pretty gutsy to open himself up to all sorts of parsing and cherry picking criticism in the areas of religeon, race, and values, by giving a sermon at a predominately black church. It would have been far safer to stay out of church for a while.
thanx;
see that?
even though they had no clue whether these people were enemies OR FRIENDS OF AMERICA, this is what happened
and gingrich has the NERVE to say “this scotus decision will cost an American city”
HEY, MORON, THIS POLICY HAS MOBILIZED THE TERRORISTS AGAINST US!
for EVERY innocent person held or tortured their ENTIRE family and their ENTIRE network of friends become OUR ENEMY
man, this is SO friggin bad
I didn’t watch tv yesterday, does anyone have a link to the Edwards speech?
That might put a really good spin on my day.
You’re probably right! It’s gonna be a pleasure watching them grow up in the White House.
You might want to show your friend some pictures, like this one on Reuters, showing the “Jesus Christ is Lord” on the wall; AP has several more photos at the same church. Or listen to the last minute of Obama’s speech, where he ties it in the his faith.
The worst of the worst, except when they aren’t.
-G
man, the author of that piece must read here at the lake, EVERY prediction we have made concerning these issues have come to pass;
shove THAT DOWN THE THROAT of “newt”
what a friggin maggot
I agree that Obama is running circles around McCain in every aspect of this contest except for one. That is the polls. The new Gallup Poll has Obama up only 46/42.
Given the the GOP brand being in ruins, the war, the economy and the Obama’s good campaigning relative to Mccain’s, this is worrisome.
Here ya go !
Just received an email from an old friend who states that she is afraid of Obama and did not like McCain….. didn’t know what to do….. Well Scarecrow…. I think this Youtube will do the trick…..
Thanks …. kind of figured that she is one of those HRC voters and needs a nudge in the right direction…
My brother in law, who really is a Muslim speaks at Christian churches lots. It’s part of his ecumenical education. So, I’m not sure what a photo would mean. His words, though, clarify what his religion is.
But, I agree with Loo Hoo’s question…so, what if he were?
Okay, I get that people are more afraid of the Islamic World than they are of Blacks, absent parents or not. But, I think it’s good to pose the question, get it out there. We’ve got a long way to go, but every journey starts with the first step.
The long campaign works to Obama’s advantage here. He’s shown that he can keep his cool, understands his material– i.e. doesn’t have to memorize soundbites like his opponents — and stays on message. And he isn’t boring. Over the long haul this is going to swing the reporters assigned to his campaign, and that will filter back to the editorial desks. This speech is a good example.
He is benefitting from being outside the bubble. Keeping the campaign hq in Chicago and moving the DNC there is critical to keeping that freshness.
Good. I will.
Stories like this, which are not new, help explain why an international legalist like Justice Kennedy, would create a rationale for possibly extending habeas corpus to non-Americans held outside the US. The Gitmo case was the pretext, but the majority in last weeks Supreme Court decision were using it to tell the Bush Administration and Linsey Graham’s Congress to clean up their act or the court would intervene, again and again.
The decision was a direct response to the stories of false detentions, mistreatment and no remedies or accountability — and the bushies are working very hard to change the story to “activist courts interfering with military and may put us in danger.” The Dems need to push back, hard, or they’ll lose the issue and Republicans will use it hit Obama.
WOW… perfect…. Thank you that answers my #105…..
I agree with the “what if he were” point, but in our age in America, it would probably doom his candidacy. The Republicans aren’t lying about it because they think it will help him.
My take was, Justice Kennedy told Bush and Congress that the Constitution extends to all their orders/actions, not just the ones that are carried out on U.S. Soil …
Are the Democrats capable of being that organized?
Yes, if they’re motivated. The McClatchy stories provide plenty of ammunition; they need to shoot it at McCain and Graham, who are pushing this as a campaign issue. But it’s the same fear of being “soft on terrorism” we’ve been fighting all along.
Criminy. And this from a democrat…
Howie should see this, prolly already has …
Thank you. He’s not seeking the job, but he would not say no. Interesting.
Gosh, I think that man is wonderful. He can speak intelligently and not sound like an ivory tower intellectual, the way Kerry did/does. John’s a good old boy, so people will listen to him, even when he uses “big” words.
This warms my heart. Folks across the pond demonstrating.
o/t
Good Morning Scarecrow and Firedogs,
need your help here. have scratched out a FISA post I wanna use over at Obama 08. It’s really basic but I think the messaging is okay. Would love for y’all to look it over. actually “love” is kinda stupid as I am an 8th grader when it comes to self conciousness and writing.
can ya take a peek ?
hope it’s obvious I am not blogwhoring, just need some input and fast
thanks!
forgive me ‘crow
My gawd. What a horse’s patoot.
Christy has a new post ready upstairs.
Oh, for sure. I agree with you too. We are only now able to imagine a Black or a Woman as President.
LOL … ((((( Marion )))))
The economic underpinnings of hope must be restored - to our education system, to our public health system - or fathers will continue to give up the family system, the social underpinning, the essential structure of society.
When our institutions are restored, our families are restored. There is simply too much desperation out there. If Obama doesn’t know this, if he has not read the history of life (and labor strife and struggle against the corporation) here since WWII, then he has not understood the institutional problems of capitalism and its imperative call for enhancing shareholder value at the direct expense of stakeholders, i.e., customers and employees.
Capitalism doesn’t work as a social system unless government intervenes to maintain standards and practices that foster the institutions that families, working class families, depend upon.
Solving our race problems, our economic problems, our social problems, our drug problems…these are ALL government problems.
Good government must protect us from the disarray caused by corporations that have betrayed their social contract. This is not a welfare problem: It is a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness issue, and it is GOVERNMENT that has failed us. Fathers who can’t get decent jobs, who are regarded as regrettable necessities rather than essential underpinnings, customers and employees, in the supply chain, are merely doing what they can to survive the onslaught of the corporation versus society.
Now: Does Obama really need to ask me about what the solutions are….?
I was reading this thread this morning on another site, sipping on java, trying to wake up when the larger picture hit me with a 2 by 4. My first thought was I need to go to FDL - they would get this. And happily I found your post Scarecrow…thank you for sharing this with us!
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how easy it is for our souls to become banckrupt with such horrendous non-leadership that we have experienced under the Bushie rule for the past eight years. After fighting for eight years against these shallow values…it is easy to lose hope that there will ever be change. And it is that hopelessness that is so devastating to our nation, our world…our souls.
Even when many of us know that change starts within each of us — it is tiring and a challenge to fight against such leadership. And of course that’s why so many of us have found refuge and community here at FDL — even an occassional poster but avid reader like myself. Hope is so important for all of us. But hope cannot survive without nourishment and a culture of respect, kindness, compassion, and self-responsibility.
I am so ready for more hope and more talk of self-responsibility for our nation and for our souls. I thought Obama’s speech was priceless. It’s too bad some media will not get the larger context of this speech — let’s pray that others out there will hear it.
I’m fairly paranoid about this whole subject…tend to agree with perris that we should be very wary. I think we should be very wary in August (remember “never launch a sales program in August”? The flip side is that it is a good time to do something nefarious people won’t pay attention to.) I keep remembering BushCo’s claim that the vote in Oct02 gave them carte blanche to invade Iraq and everything they wanted after that. And then look at the emergency powers EOs http://www.sourcewatch.org/ind.....ted_States">( http://www.sourcewatch.org/ind.....ted_States) that, combined with the jawdropping repugnancy of McCain as a candidate makes me really, really worried.

Newt said this scotus decision will cost another american city? What about lack of funding on infrastructure, you twit?

or, rearrange it.
senator obama now, as head of his party—
good job.
Well then the city should have sold bonds or perhaps held a few bake sales if they wanted a safe bridge (power grid, etc.).

Great speech. Thanks for putting it up Scarecrow.
I’ll hold off on commenting, because as a separated father fighting steep odds to stay involved with his kid, I am tired of hearing how I need to do better. This is not to say that Mr. Obama is wrong, because in many aspects he’s right: however, after driving my son back to Canada (where his mom, who broke up with me by phone two weeks before moving in with me, lives), I’m not in the mood. Not after driving 12 fucking hours yesterday because she refuses to buy a car.
And I’ll leave it at that before I lose my temper.
