Mr. McCain, the expected Republican nominee, also said that “under Senator Obama’s tax plan, Americans of every background would see their taxes rise — seniors, parents, small-business owners and just about everyone who has even a modest investment in the market.” He used much the same language in an April 15 speech in which he warned that Democrats “are going to raise your taxes by thousands of dollars per year,” adding up to “a trillion dollars in new taxes over the next decade.”
Economists of various ideological persuasions, however, view Mr. McCain’s assessment as inaccurate or exaggerated. Some question whether Mr. Obama’s tax plan can even be characterized as an increase. Some also argue that contrary to Mr. McCain’s assertions, the Democrat’s proposals, if enacted, would actually reduce taxes for the middle class — the voters both candidates see as the key to victory.
In a study of the candidates’ plans made public Wednesday, the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center concluded that in contrast to Mr. McCain, “Senator Obama offers much larger tax breaks to low- and middle-income taxpayers and would increase taxes on high-income taxpayers.”
The study said, “The largest tax cuts, as a share of income, would go to those at the bottom of the income distribution,” whereas “Senator McCain’s tax cuts would primarily benefit those with very high incomes.”
Other groups that focus on tax and economic policy are preparing similar analyses, but say they regard the Tax Policy Center’s assessment as highly reliable, based on its work in the past. (emphasis mine)
At a time when oil and food costs are higher, when foreclosure filings keep on climbing, when the percentage of underweight births has reached its highest point in 40 years due to increasing poverty, and when food banks nationwide have less and less to give out to the people who most desperately need it -- can we afford John McCain's incoherent economic policies? I say no.

McCain has alzheimer’s. He forgot that he used to be against all this stuff.
He is the Desperate Man.
My friends, straight talk is whatever I say it is.
-John McCottage Cheese
“I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle-class Americans who most need tax relief.” - McFlipFlop in 2001
oh, and those marxists at Bloomberg say his tax cuts would cost us $2-3 Trillion in the next 10 years
If McSame weren’t running for President, no one would pay any attention to him; he’d be just another old man in the Senate, talking about the ‘good old days’ that never actually existed.
Morning Christy, and Happy Father’s Day to Mr. ReddHedd.
no doubt he got breakfast in bed delivered by a certain little peanut.
Beaker!
I guess Johnny McTeleprompter hasn’t been paying attention all these years, because if he looked closely, he would see Big Business using the same technique as Big Oil. It’s called Big Oil Laziness where these companies raise their prices and don’t lift a finger. Yep, they cut back on their production of oil and raise prices so they can have record profits without having to exert themselves. No different than what Big Business does when it has a republican in the White House who is on their side and will protect them. They get those big tax cuts and then decide to not use the money to upgrade their businesses, but rather, enjoy their own good fortune and then will cut jobs and send those jobs overseas for a third of what they were paying their workers here in the states.
IN A NUTSHELL: Republicans are lousy at finances…well…unless you consider stealing large amounts of cash from the AMerican people through Savings & Loan scandals or from the collapsing & insider trading of their businesses as “good financial decisions”. Raising taxes will force the lazy assholes to get off their asses and start taking responsibility for their actions.
“McCottage Cheese”
Love it GregB!!!!!
OI - was planning to slog through MTP this morning. But as I spy Mr. and Mrs. Carville on the set - ummm…. no.
It is called “Fair Share” which includes those nice people who sit on their butts living on their dividends AND Corporations…..
the best things is the contrast between Obama & McCain on the Midwest flood
McCain - Cindy & I send prayers & condolences
Obama - puts on gloves and went to work filling sandbags
what! and pass on the butler’s shrimp plate? are you crazy?
Another good one Christy.
Wonderful information for all of us to try counteracting the cockeyed express run-amok.
Either McSame is deliberately lying, or he is mentally unfit to drive around the block without a chauffeur.
Whatever is the matter, he would be downright dangerous as preznit.
The more he spouts, the more he sounds like a weird hybrid vehicle, combining the compassion of dubya, the temper of deadeye, and the common sense of a waterbug twirling in circles on the pond.
Unfit, dangerous, corrupt, NO WAY he deserves the right to take the steering wheel of this country.
dang u Elliot *g* you beat me to it.
Happy Poppa’s Day to Mr. Redd and all the fathers out there. I hope you are treated royally.
I totally agree…huge contrast.
Even the difference between their on-air reactions to Russert’s death was so Huge.
Obama came across as very presidential. McCain was just embarrassing. I was hoping that everyone viewing saw the remarkable contrast.
I felt bad the day Tim Russert collapsed and died while at work on Friday, but by today, I am getting sick to death of hearing about how wonderful this man was! I tried not to pounce on his cheerleading of the Iraq occupation and how he protected Americans from the truth by not pushing for the correct answers from the officials in the White House or connected to them, but today? I’m ready for it! He is half the reason why Americans remained stupid for so long.
The ROM (republican owned media) is obviously reading the blog comments about this very thing, because yesterday one of the Talking Cannonball Heads said that Russert did push Dick Cheney into admitting stuff. Huh? When? When did that happen? Spit.
I felt bad the day Tim Russert collapsed and died while at work on Friday, but by today, I am getting sick to death of hearing about how wonderful this man was!
Me too, BUT - I’m of the opinion that NBC/MSNBC is embarrassing itself with this canonization… and looking impotent at the same time.
Thank God for the Food Network….. so tired of the Russert on every network all the time….
There’s nothing new for people here at FDL in this news article
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politi.....tico/11090 (Many historians see little chance for McCain,
in terms of what a [loser] Mr. McCain is. But, it’s interesting to me to see what people outside of the liberal blogosphere are saying.
“under Senator Obama’s tax plan, Americans of every background would see their taxes rise — seniors, parents, small-business owners and just about everyone who has even a modest investment in the market.”
First Obama will raise taxes on the rich and on stock profits, not everybody
Second Obama will raise taxes on stockmarket income so that ever dollar earned from the market is taxed the same as EVERY DOLLAR EARNED FROM WORKING FOR A LIVING!
Didn’t Warren Buffet say something about being taxed less than his secretary we need that quote out on the MSM to counter McCain’s lies!
That bit about everyone else being taxed pure lies.
However Obama will end the war and McCain will continue it so McCain will tax Americans more because McCain plans to spend more money.
We could have National healthcare, a rebuild the infrastructure program, and still have money left over if we would stop war spending.
I keep trying not to wade in. You make it hard.
What you said, YES!
The only thing I agreed with, in the endless coverage: too young, sad; seemed always cheerful and devoted to his family.
That adds up to a nice guy. It does NOT, a journalist make. There’s been a lotta hooey in the air from the parasites which one inevitably sees around any big fish.
My 1st thot was to wonder if the growing pressure of knowing and trying to ignore the truth of this administration was bringing pressure to bear, and it became too much. Still, the cheery exterior seemed impervious. How can a smart guy like that act so clueless? He reminded me of some people I know - very nice, very smart, very blind to anything that would disturb their very nice world view.
Sad on many levels. Condolences to his family.
I do question the opening line. A dead heat means a tie. Not one side consistently outpolling the other.
Oh that MSM.

AH HAH! Mary Tyler Moore reruns!
oogh.
A lot of people in the Southwest head to Mexico for cheaper Prescription drugs but now they are going south of the border for cheaper gas…. OMG what next…. Food?
Mexico’s Cheap Gas Draws American Drivers
Knowing what we know, indeed, how can it be a dead heat? But, I think that is only a reflection of the ignorance and stubborness of many. This general campaign will bring all of their contrasting agendas and views out and then it will be obvious. I hope, I pray, I wish. And I will talk to everyone I know it doesn’t get it yet!
It definitely has been an embarrassing display. I sum it up as no different than George Bush giving the Medal of Freedom to George Tenet and others. Just a way to overshadow the crimes committed. By giving Tim Russert their “medal” over the past couple of days, NBC/MSNBC are trying to make themselves feel better and to overshadow the real crimes done by Russert and those around them. They propagandized against the American people for the White House, so they have to make Russert look like a guy who was tough against the criminals in the White House and who deserves TODAY to be known as the good family man who would never allow such a thing.
Oh please. Raising flags at half staff in Buffalo, NY is a little much!
Economists of various ideological persuasions, however, view Mr. McCain’s assessment as inaccurate or exaggerated.
Did these economists get an answer from McCain about what government programs he will cut to balance the budget?
Sorry my comment at 27 was not in reply to KayinMaine
OT NPR just had a pearl clutching story on Mayhill Fowler the reporter blogger who got a couple of scoops re Obama and Bill Clinton comments but “broke journalistic ethics to do so”. Oh the humanity! That’s how the story starts then it goes back and pretends to reflect on whether what Fowler did was OK. The idea that after 7 plus years of covering the Bush Administration have “ethics” is laughable enough but that Fowler somehow broke the rules of these flacks, shills, and sycophants is a riot.
Exactly! I truly feel bad for his wife and son because he died so young and at a time when his son was on the cusp of living out his life, but man! Russert’s behavior over the years is not something that should be overshadowed. He along with the other media heads were complicit in spreading the lies and fake patriotism over something that has today been quashed. Even when the truth came out, we got more propaganda from these assholes to protect the members of the White House!
Tired of the bullshit. I used this video this morning on my Father’s Day post and think it could also be used here:

;-)
Does anyone think the old GOP boogie man of TAX & SPEND Liberals going anywhere this year?
Every time I hear some repug talk about this…. I say $4500/minute going to Iraq….. on the US Credit Card….
That’s okay. ;-) Your answer: he’ll cut all programs that don’t include killing brown people in foreign lands. That’s my guess.
Thanks for the link to peek at. I’d been too much of a coward to go looking on my own.
Mebbe McProp’s dismal campaign prognosis goes a long way toward explaining the string of wretched, shocking attacks on BOTH Senator Obama AND his wife, even at network level (fauxnewts of course, David Brooks’ casually tossed little and whopper-size lies, etc., the steady drumbeat of e-mail junk attack-lies.).
People who would stoop to such a level at this point in the campaign ARE. DESPERATE. and scary.
There’s C-span show with some pretty hilarious blog/ youtube bits about the race.
This is the neocons newest charade. It’s their way of putting out lies & rumors.
Loved your “pearl clutching” image! So true. How many wealthy women fainted at the notion of the Obama/Clinton comments? LOL
IN A NUTSHELL: Republicans are lousy at finances…well…unless you consider stealing large amounts of cash from the AMerican people through Savings & Loan scandals or from the collapsing & insider trading of their businesses as “good financial decisions”. Republicans are lousy at finance Yes! I been trying to push that message in the late late nite threads they are either old money like Bush or they used connections like Cheney did to steal from the government.
Self made types like Warren Buffet and George Soros are Dems. I wonder if we divide up the Forbes list of the richest people how many old money, or stolen money types are GOPers and how many self made types are Dems?
Newts old talking point about the GOP being the party of entrepreneurs is like most of Newt’s talking points pulled whole cloth out his…
I don’t disagree with the point you are making. However, as partisan Democrat, I note that her “scoops” have both been while following Democrats. I have a feeling that I’m not going to care for Ms. Fowler a lot before the campaign is all over.
Of course, now they put Christopher Hitchens on. I broke the unspoken rule. My bad…
It is so bizarre to hear McCain contradict himself literally on a daily basis and he continues to get a pass. A Democrat can’t change his lunch menu without getting called a flip-flopper. And people STILL complain about the “liberal media”, it’s enough to make you wanna pull yer hair out!
My comment at 36 was for you I just got distracted with 2 ideas at the same time.
McCain’s like a Teflon skilet, eventually he will start to wear down and all of these things will begin to stick.
Boy-oh-boy! That’s never happened to ME, thank dog! heh heh.
are you implying he’ll be more a-peeling as the campain wears on?
Yep! And thankfully the last eight years of republican rule has shown our country that they suck at finance and are made up of nothing more than a bunch of swindlers who couldn’t balance a checkbook even if there was only $100 in it. They suck and because of that, they have to resort to stealing large amounts of money quickly, because this way it prohibits them from getting those overdraft charges with all that money in there! See? They know how to take care of themselves and leave the overcharges to Americans if need be.
I despise them. How anyone can be a republican today and believes that to be one means to be good at conserving the nations’ money is a pathetic dumbbat in my book!
that must be a doozie of an unspoken rule. inquiring minds….
pretty please?….
New thread upstairs…
Bah hahahahahaha! And who knows how deadly those little bits of Teflon are to our nation’s digestive system! Hopefully we’ll never get the chance to know because Americans have thrown McTeflonPan out. ;-)
gotta go - but if you’re looking for something to do there’s always the comment threads in your local newspapers and tv stations - my personal choice in recreation :D
just posted that 2001 quote on taxes - just to watch their little activist heads explode
Ok we all know that McCain is lying that and he hopes most Americans are not paying attention this election about any other issue than terror like they last time.
However is the MSM going to start challenging McCain on these lies or do they really like a Sam’s Club special barbecue?
For those of you who have don’t know Sam’s Club is a special club from the people who gave you WallMart.
Think Costco huge portions, but lower wages, less flavor, immigrants and fruitflies loads and loads of fruitflies hatching and swarming over the produce section even in winter they don’t die!
Open air markets in Mexico are less insect ridden perhaps because the fruit is fresh so any bad fruit doesn’t hatch flies which infect ALL THE REST OF THE FRUIT.
But enough speculation about bug ecology.
Sam’s family does give big to GOPers I bet thats where McCain gets his barbecue. Why the press sells their soul for a free meal I don’t know?
“As soon as you talk about something, if it’s bad, it happens and if it’s good, it goes away!”
I know Obama does not want to go negative but McCain his wife and whichever kid is still dependent all seem to be behind on their credit cards when they can pay them.
I think Obama could point this fact out without being too negative after all who would you trust to balance the Federal Budget the guy putting cash away for his kids college fund or the rich guy who can’t be bothered to pay?
John and his wife have more unpaid debt on their cards than I ever earned in a year working a regular job! mumble, curse, pissed off, kick the trash can!
OMG is John Edwards kicking a*s on “This Week”
Why the press sells their soul for a free meal I don’t know?
THE GOSPEL OF SATAN

Many will come who claim to speak in my name

Hope I got the Bible quotes close.
McCain’s statement was technically correct but it was an exaggeration.
If the capitol gains tax goes up then anybody who has a mutual fund investment will see an increase of their taxes.
So instead of calling McCain names we need to have the data to show that most of that tax will be insignificant to all but 1% of the American people.
You fight smear with facts and you do it quickly
Sorry here’s the link I hope http://www.gospel-of-satan.com/notes/05.html
Sam’s Club the realm of the Lord of the Flies?
Nice summary. I actually like Obama’s tax plan, overall. Not a real overhaul, which is overdue, but it’s the best tax plan with a chance of passage we’ve seen in a long long time.
My response to my conservative friends who parrot this crap is “You either believe people who are stupid or liars”. I don’t have many friends in the over $250,000 per year group. Not many conservative friends any more either since I started being very outspoken about my understanding of the world.
on a lighter note, that video was HILARIOUS! best laugh i had all week!
