g’nite katymine
newt! newttoons! fig newtoons!
hey mary mcc
Hello FDL! Since it’s open thread, I have a feature request. It would be cool if the News Headline box entries had a “number of comments” listing following the headline. Then we could tell if there were any comments to read! Thanks!
Digg it for Suzanne… She always hosts great late late night Off topic and brings us the very best in music and of course her FAV cartoons!!
Can you Digg it?
The new moniker I’ve been looking for – how ever can I thank you, Mary?
double diggs, one comics and animation the other music
Late Late Night ZED
we used to have it and i’m not sure why it was removed. i know a lot of remodeling has been done to try and make the lake load faster – which was a problem for many people.
i’ll pass your request along to the tech crew.
Ahh shit Neuro we did it again double diggs:>) At least it shows we are supporting the Lake:>)
twerr not nothing newtooonfiggish.
Got you fixed up, Nahant.
apparently nahant got the official Digg in, I guess you should delete mine, Suzanne
what I don’t understand is that after submitting my Digg, I came back to the front page and clicked on digg to see if mine was the official digg, and digg said it was…then after I read nahant’s comment I checked again and it said his was the official digg…oh well
Hope you sleep better than Sylvester did, katymine!
But ya know the digg at the top goes to my Digg so I guess I beat ya Neuro!!! How are you doing this fine eve before Fathers day….. Any plans for the day neuro? Oh are you a dad.. I guess I shoulda asked that first!
i think it is a matter of timing and category.. you both used different digg categories – it only checks for duplicates in the same category
First – you two are that close when clicking “Submit.”
Second – check your Digg neurophius – now linked to the first one.
I am a stepdad X 4
all adults, but only 3 have grown up and left the home
Cool two of my six are steps… but you know I love them like they were mine:>) Happy step fathers day then to you Neuro:>)
hmmm, it won’t let me ”reply”
reply to 24:
Thanks be to you, O Lurking One
thanks nahant, and the same to you :)
try a reboot again neuro.. same thing happened after you did a digg last time iirc
Father’s Day AND Stepfather’s Day, that is!
Well maybe only a momentary cosmic blip…it seems to be working now
We call it Big Daddy’s Day were we come from.
hmm, anyone still here besides Suzanne, nahant, Lurk and me?
Oh hi mary
Thanks Lurch oops lurker:>) Seems both Neuro and I are the big Diggers and carrying the shovel for the Lake!
Happy fathers’ day to all the dads.
I love cartoons, Suze. Somebody posed the question to me once: What cartoon character reminds you most of yourself? Anybody??
I just can’t get over Russert.
so what was your answer bfl?
Back at you my friend :>) Hope the kids are doing great for you in the AM!
iirc, only 1% of our readers comment. wish i could think of a way to get more delurkings
Dudley Do-Right. lol. (with shades of George of The Jungle)
Big Daddy’s Day?
I think I would have to say Woody Woodpecker, for no reason that I could possibly explain
More like this
we do both have red hair, though
Suz- I got something for you-

big bad voodoo daddy
well my favorite cartoon was Rocky & Bullwinkle. But the question was which cartoon character reminds me most of myself. I went with something a little more modern. I said Rocko from Rocko’s Modern Life.
Great cartoon, thanks Suz:)
Happy Father’s day to all the daddies out there.
dayam, vg, that’ll get your feet tapping – was kewl thanks
Just a drive by…
I sure hope some competent person in the blogosphere takes a hard look at Scalia’s dissent in BOUMEDIENE (recent Supreme Court habeas ruling).
Oh, THAT Big Daddy!
I would have liked to see Burl Ives as Big Daddy do a rap tune…
Big Daddy
I’m in and out all night, per usual…
sherman and peabody.. usually a tossup as to which one
Thanks for that VG. Saw them back in April when they were here (right after Danny died. they still got it – though Clarence isn’t always with it. Nils Lofgren was great as was Bruce. great show. Roger McGuinn was the guust & did 2 songs.
I liked your Big Daddy better than mine, Suz!
Don’t know if everyone’s seen this or not. JedReport’s “John McCain Debates Himself on Supporting Bush.”
LOL. That was a good one. Each unique. An odd couple. When I was a
very young boy, my favorite stuffed animal was a stuffed Dalmation that I think somebody won at a stand at the Jersey Shore. i called it Mr. Peabody.
Well, I just loved Astro Boy. But, I’ll say Top Cat.
I forgot about TC.
totally different styles.. i just automatically thought of voodoo daddy since i associate nola with mary mcc
Here is a New Orleans Brass Band that I heard play at the jazz fest last weekend.

i loved top cat
and pixie and dixie and mr jinx and tweety and bugs and elmer and daffy and donald’s nephews and johnny quest and speed racer… i still love good cartoons.
they sure don’t make em like they used to
Dig Daddy thinkin’ thrives in NOLA.
Impeachment material if you ask me. Besides he a repugnant asswipe who only care about his self centered self and the wingnuts, but of course conservatism has become the bane of our country… We need to make the word into the same as a swear word… they sure haven’t done any thing for the common good of the country. They want everything for then selves and fuck the rest of them… Talk about elitisms
I loved UnderDog!!!!
ohmystars!!! how could i have forgotten underdog and sweet polly purebred
Bruce Springsteen – Twist and Shout
Liked that – not the usual Bruce – any details on who he was playing with and where? (never saw Bruce with a full horn section before).
One of my favs was Felix the Cat
Mine too!
remember fritz the cat?
Pretty good Nils Lofgren
Thankfully, no vocal track.
Heckle and Jeckle were pretty cool…
Whoops – spoke too soon… some vocal track.

Of course there is always Betty

Somethin’ about Bruce’s guns?
tennesse tuxedo
Hi Deputy Dawg here. Is Sheriff Suzanne down in these parts.
(laughing) is that a gun in your pocket or…
jayt- I am missing what exactly you are asking. Srsy. Guns? But, I am not trying to be coy, bec. crikey, the innocent smile and the armpits near the muscles just bowled me over. Plus, he does know how to work a crowd. So, what was your question?
uh, that’s a betty boop cartoon nahant and not bush
fork, wrong thread, never mind (ala gilda)
Have to tell someone – today I discovered on the bumper of my Element, next to my Obama sticker, a sticker that read “Al Qaeda for Obama ‘08.” Someone had put it there while I walked the dog. And I live in a small town that essentially an island on a tiny street with no traffic!
I laughed, then got pissed about the right wing a-hole who did this, and about the vandalism/someone-else-touching-my-stuff invasion part. Anyway, this is what we can expect. Besides, they’re wrong again. Didn’t Al Qaeda endorse McCain?
are you OK, Suzanne? :)
It’s gonna be an ugly summer and fall.
i’m od’ing on all these great cartoons
well, McBush wants to fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here…that’s pretty convenient for AQ, not to have to come over here to fight us…
Bush is now authorizing harassing the Polar Bears hope he meets one when the secret service is not around!
This is from the show I was at. Quality sucks but . . . .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ1PKG2MYig
i tried to catch ya downstairs to let ya know that was betty boop and not bush nahant (and screwed it up)
It was just an honest mistake… …honest.
CNN meant to say Hillary congratulates Obama, but somehow AlQueda got inserted instead of her name… …damn liberal media.
This is just wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong!
For comparison, here’s the original.
fuck them! hope you find out who did it. leave your dogs biggest dump right outside their door.
Youtube impaired over here!
What are they?
and the armpits near the muscles just bowled me over.
that’s what I was talking about. Guys tend to refer to muscular arms as “guns”.
really. Tenness Tuxedo, Deputy dawg. Maybe Roadrunner is TOO classic. Soem of the stuff I watched with my kids on Nick was pretty good. “Ah! Real Monsters!” Rocko, Hey Arnold. Can’t compare though.
The first is a cover of the Morphine song “I know you,” a very very bad one. The second is the original.
No sweat Suz I stuck it in the wrong thread at first:>) Had to reenter it here!

I’ve read of a few scientific experiments done in this area which reveal a disturbing tendency showing that when one group of “normal” people are assigned to have effective mastery of another group and told to “control” another group, by whatever means felt to be appropriate, things deteriorate quickly, including violence or even sadistic practices…
the infamous stanford experiment?
the infamous stanford experiment?
Yes. That was early ’70’s, I think. More have been done since then, showing more or less the same results.
Sure sounds like it to me… Those in power always seem to become depraved and forget that they are civilized:>(
need a pick-me-up.

’nuff said.

i remember a documentary when we were maybe in high school. maybe grammar school. where they had little kids and split them up and made them wear different color ribbons on their clothes. one group was dominant and one subservient. but “role playing” genocide is a bit much, no?
I think in part, it has to do with being “civilized.” Civilized society is heavily repressed emotionally. So when given the opportunity to let loose, people inevitably go overboard.
Exactly!!! http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/…..aden.tape/
If we buy Carl von Clausewitz’s claim that, “war is a continuation of politics by other means,” we need to buy that America’s political class doesn’t know what the fuck they are doing, for more than 2000 years ago Sun Tzu, in the first text on warfare, warned:
But McCain thinks that we are “succeeding” because our casualties are down. But our opponent isn’t counting his success in Americans killed. Rather, he is keeping score in trillions of debt: “We are continuing this policy in bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy.” And, our Republican military geniuses, especially McCain, can’t get it out of their heads that this isn’t about body count. It’s dollars!
wow. lotta springsteen & the e street band on tne jukebox. this Jersey guy can’t never get enough.
bruce fire
Phillip Zimbardo, where the hell are you when we need you?
Is there a better live show than Bruce?
(rhetorical question)
I’m guessing those neoconservative smart guys never bothered to read Clausewitz, or Sun Tzu, or Mao. Unfortunately, Bin Laden, and others, have.
did that in O-town too. Dynamite show.
Steve Miller Band is close. If you ever catch his concerts he seems to go on for ever and ever!
i haven’t seen one. funny, when we hgot out we were saying it was a little short compared to the jersey shows -and it was. “Only” 2 1/2 hours. Solid. The local paper review was just gushing about how wvwrybody could take a lesson from him.
But the simple answer to your question is “no.”
yeah, I’ve seen him go over three hours – no opening band – no intermission, “Solid”, as you say. Iron man.
well, i gotta run in case they don’t lemme sleep. thanks for all the springsteen guys.
g’nite bfl
My favorite Bruce – and I’m outta here for the evening.
Nite all.

~~”American Skin (41 Shots)” is a song written by Bruce Springsteen, inspired by the police shooting death of Amadou Diallo.~~~

Don’t get me wrong I was enjoying Bruce at the Stone Pony in 66 when I was attending school at Fort Monmouth… He was real good back then!! You could tell he was going places:>) But his song the rising is great
Thanks.
I had this feeling when I watched the primaries that threre is a divide in this country between the those who are educated those who are arrogantly proud of their lack of education. Bush has twice as many Ivy League degrees as Obama, but the man slept through class and has remained uneducated. And, the media considers him “one of us” and “not an elitist” and “a guy I’d like to have a beer with (were I still alive).” On the other hand, Obama, who grew up poor, and got an Ivy League education, and stayed awake in class, is considered an “eletist,” because he, by contrast, is educated.
That, IMHO, is the class divide in this nation. The educated (who got there by very serious hard effort), and the arrogantly ignorant.
that was the word the paper used.
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.c…..ith-t.html
A little Summer time for ya
Funny thing about the “Guy I’d like to have a beer with.” Rock The Vote and some jukebox company did a survey in bars across America, asking which candidate they’d like to have a beer with. Obama won.
Preznit has decided to “get” Osama before he leaves office
per the London Sunday Times.
oh that is sweet.. thanks nahant
From your link
It’s not like the right wing didn’t thoroughly mock Obama for saying he would be willing to send troops into Pakistan to get AlQueda…
The wingnuts will of course, conveniently forget that fact.
a side-effect of the koolaid
UGG McPain is on Saturday Night Live:>(
Oh, I think it is perhaps the primary purpose of the Kool-Aid
I know this was shown here tonight, but I wanted to bring it down here:
Seems like a photo-op, and until you see it, it’s pretty easy to be cynical.
But if it is staged, it was done brilliantly.
Obama in Illinois, pitching in.
There is also a vid, but these stills are actually better, IMO.
I think my favorite McCain moment for today is when he told an audience that it can be hard to be proud of America.
Still waiting for the wingnuts to start wailing and gnashing their teeth…
*crickets*
*spraying nahant’s tv with brain bleach*
that should help – along with a channel change
Isn’t that kind of what Michelle Obama said (and was heavily attacked for saying)?
Thanks he is done at last and Usher is coming up:>) Hope they make it worth watching McPain fuck up his reading of the teleprompter… here comes Usher!
SNL has no standards at all
yeap
Jungleland serves as a reminder that Bruce is not only a phenomenal rocker, but a fine poet as well
not that we need such a reminder
BINGO! The conservatives are certainly one sided and always wear blinders!!
maybe we should counter the “liberal media” canard by always referring to the “conservative media”–or indeed, the “right wing media”…
If the media have responded to this example of right-wing hypocrisy by devoting substantive coverage to it (and I just haven’t seen it), I apologize to the media.
Of course, that would require that they “cover” McCain with something approaching objectivity.
I suddenly feel as if I am hogging the comments.
Don’t be shy, lurkers!
competence
You are kidding aren’t you! Apologize for what calling a spade a spade. The MSM is nothing but a paid mouthpiece for the conservatives! You know it and I know it.
you are not hogging neuro
and ditto – any readers out there wanna jump in, this is the perfect time to do so
Ya whats on your mind lurkers??? And don’t pipe in THELURKINGMOD… We know you are there:>)
well it has gotten awfully quiet here for the intervening interlude a little Freddy for you
i was thinking it was gonna be this freddy
The Zimbardo experiment…or Stanford Prison Experiment led to a variety of rules on psychological studies of this sort…including “informed consent” regarding the real purposes of the study. Of course, this has resulted in subsequent studies having low value in predicting behavioral norms. Another famous work was Stanley Milgram’s experiment in which subjects were ordered to administer shocks to other individuals by an authority figure.
Stanford Prison Experiment Site
Zimbardo has a new book out (The Lucifer Effect) on how humans are prone to such actions under authority, with a few exceptions…or when trained to resist. He discusses the CIA Prisons and Abu Ghraib in the context of known psychological studies and discusses how military training and regulations are truly inadequate to preventing such abuses.
I knew I would get you on that one Suz:>) But tis hard to beat that Freddy!!
ok, pups, time for me to do that nasty ole just in case cleaning – even if it is father’s day
g’nite pups and thanks for hanging with me tonight
McCain will need to best him – I suggest John begin his first debate answer with one-armed push-ups ala Jack Palance at the Oscars. Same temperment, too.
That’ll show’em!
Cool when I saved Bohemian Rhapsody it let me know who else was watching it:>) You Suz and some named rockstarjoshps3
Suz you keep cleaning like that and you will wear the finish off of everything with all that scrubbing:>)
nite suzanne. thanks for the toons
Apparently McCain has hauled out Carly Fiorina as his “secret weapon” in winning over Clinton supporters.
One problem is that Carly never supported Hillary, and has been a Bush and McCain supporter for years. She would never have supported Hillary even if she had won the nomination.
The second problem is that within the Tech Community she is well known as creating the poisnous climate that led to Hewlett-Packards decline (which is why she was let go) and subsequent scandals.
The Carly Fiorina Legacy
i dislike cleaning only slightly less than i do the current administration… its like hell on earth nahant, all this forking having to keep the little cottage by the creek in the redwoods spotless – i’m in a forking forest!

Morning all.
Got a picture of my pet bird today and, no, Sylvester cannot eat it!
Ya he is an asswipe… just like he did for the Keating 5… Protects his money buddies!
Here is another fav from Gerry and the Pacemakers some nice eye candy with this one!
He is trending towards laughingstock territory. McCain steps on his joint every day now, sometimes more than once – so he may set the record for the single most inept candidate, running the single most inept campaign in the history of national elections. That would be impressive.
Me – I’m pulling for him.
Here is more on Straight talk Johnny Can you fucking believe this jerk?? He is so corrupt no wonder the wingnuts don’t like him… a real Maverick
Fabulous photo!
Those “green screen” youTubes really highed McCain’s drone. Funny.

On that note Good Night Pups as usual it has been entertaining and loads of fun hanging with you guys. Happy fathers day to all you dads and I hoe your kids take good care of you for Fathers day!!
Strangely, 30 years ago, I used to talk about such concepts over beer with John Couch, later to become Apple’s first VP for Software. We used to talk a lot about what constitues the best user interface. My contribution was the slogan that it’s the one that needs the fewest pages of manual.
John was very big on a matrix-oriented languge called APL, and when he first saw a spread sheet, he recognized it as “APL for the masses.”
nite nahant
I was with XEROX back then supporting PARC in Palo Alto and thanks to them we are using their visions and interfaces that they pioneered. But of course the Toner heads in Rottenchester had no fucking idea what to do with it and like todays corps were only getting the most money out of it and never realized that it was better to get more of the product in the hands of users than getting the most money out of all that great research!! Boy did they ever screw Da pooch!!
Off to dreamland!!!
Shit… Good night Newton I dolove ribbing ya on the whole Apple PC thing… it fun and I know you enjoy our little games qwe play about it:>))
good night nahant :-)
So, sometime aroud 1980 I was in Silicon Valley and had lunch with John. He said to me: “I’ve finally found the interface we’ve been talking about.” Of course, I asked, what is it? He said,
I noted that that system was a $200,000 system bullt on Gallium Arsenide circuitry. John muttered that he had ideas on how to get around that. Ultimately, John became the lead on the Lisa.
fun! I hadn’t heard of “matrix-oriented language called APL.”
I’m surprised how much mono has advaced over objective-c on linux.
Now that y’all are speaking in tongues and the sun’s rising, I’ll say goodnight :-) It’s been fun.
Is Miguel de Icaza still running that project? (Some of his father’s friends told me that he once got into trouble for trying to rig a Mexican election.)
I was afraid that Novell would deliberately or not so deliberately kill that project. Looks like I was wrong.
Time for me to sign off. G’nite all.
Looks like it: http://tirania.org/
either way looks like mono has a toe hold.
Back to share this delightful Italian rumor – preznit may convert to catholicism.

Tech trolling thought for the day
My sister and I have elementary school-age kids in two competitive Northside Chicago schools.
Both PTA s have funded computer labs. Theirs is PC , ours is Mac. Ours is the second overhaul funded in the past 4 years.
(Ours cost more)
She is of the opinion that the money in her school would be better spent on a human teaching resource. (Chicago Public School classes are typically sized at the 32 seat limit)
I agreed with her about both schools.
She is a (non-practicing) attorney, I am a geek.
She then asked what I thought of the benefit of early technology classes.
I said it is limited, especially in 32 kids/class 1 or 2 hour/week.
The benefit is that the PTA parents feel better about their technological inadequacies by filling a need their kids do not have.
I thought for a minute more and made a prediction that the user interface of their generation was not developed by Xerox or Apple, buy by Nintendo.
Good morning, pups. It’s Dowd, Friedman, Kristof and Rich today. MoDo says that “W Regrets Almost Nothing,” and that during his farewell European tour, President Bush was still pushing, but more softly, the same refrain that turned Europe so virulently anti-American. Mr. Friedman writes a “Letter From Cairo,” and says if prices keep soaring, food and fuel could reshape politics around the developing world as much as nationalism or Communism did in their days. Mr. Kristof talks about “The Weapon of Rape,” and says The United Nations and its member states seem to finally be recognizing that systematic mass rape is at least as much an international outrage as, say, pirated DVDs. Mr. Rich asks “Angry Clinton Women Heart McCain?” He states that the same Republican operatives who gleefully insulted Hillary Clinton are now peddling the fable that her female supporters will desert their own party en masse.

The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got French toast waffles this morning. And, also through the magic of cyberfood, I can share some Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes I picked this morning. Have a great day.
hard to argue against that one. I played video games long before personal computers were available to me.
Maybe the PTA should have a workshop on how to install linux on the console.
Will the Saudi’s pump enough oil to scare off the speculators and drive the price down? Monday should tell us the answer but will it be enough oil to save John McCain is the next question?
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/…..refer=home
Something is up thought the Saudi’s are asking oil consuming nations to send people to the meeting, are the Saudi’s really concerned abut what they think or what they have to offer?
Bush gave me a Nuclear Reactor and Uranium what will the rest of you countries give me for cheap oil?
With Friends like these Israel doesn’t need enemies.
After all friends don’t give your enemies Nukes!
morning marion,
I read “could reshape politics around the developing world as much as nationalism or
Communism” Consumerism.Your edit is more on point in this day and age.
I got the zed on the talking heads.
Good morning everyone! You may feel free to begin the “relentless” mockery that I understand is now mandatory for trolls of the “troofer” bent such as myself. I confess all in shame, for I have, subversive and idiotic, as I yesterday learned it is, formed doubts as to the official explanation, something that years of training and observation led me do. Research has reinforced these questions. What I have regarded as logic, I have learned is merely rightwing militia like behavior, but I hope you folks tolerate my presence nonetheless. I promise, as in the past, to keep my positions on these matters to myself, unless directly questioned. I do not, however, appreciate direct personal attacks such as took place yesterday. btw, Matt will never make a scab on Hunter’s ass.
I’m also sorry I devoted any effort at all to defending Amanda.
What’s happening is that the basic bargain between the Egyptian regime and its people — which said, “We will guarantee you cheap food, a job, education and health care, and you will stay out of politics” — is fraying. Even with the growth of the last three years, government subsidies and wages can’t keep up with today’s food and fuel price rises. The only part of the bargain that’s left is: “and you will stay out of politics.”
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
What’s happening is that the basic bargain between the
EgyptianAmerican regime and its peopleFixed it.
Likely voters in past elections are people who have voted before. Minorities are getting registered to vote but many haven’t voted before. I’m sure the GOP will be out in force to try vote trickery by telling minorities the polling place is closed/someplace else that sort of thing.
Still though do we have any reliable numbers about who will vote and how many will make it past the GOP’s tricks to vote?
Or are all numbers on this election going to be hazy?
Will we need to take into account the vote suppression abilities of a strong local GOP machine next to a minority area when making voting predictions?
Are places with high numbers of GOP voter suppression going to be the place to watch this election?
Is the Ghost of Kathrine Harris McCain’s last hope?
Its funny how no GOPer ever seems to go to jail for messing with a minoritie’s right to vote. Its funny that no elections ever get contested when its a dark person’s votes that were stolen.
Gore gave up Florida, Kerry gave up Ohio. Maybe Obama won because we were pretty sure that he would fight to make sure Minority votes were counted.
