We’ve all gotten those vile right-wing e-mail forwards — usually from that right-wing brother-in-law or cranky uncle — which, it turns out, is one of the right’s more effective under-the-radar techniques for spreading smears and various falsehoods about their liberal targets, since it’s so devoid of any kind of accountability.
So the most recent iteration making the rounds is probably one you’ve seen: Featuring various "real quotes" from Barack Obama, it pretends to demonstrate to the reader what an anti-white racist and radical he really is. (Maybe this is meant to eventually tie into the Obama-equals-Hitler meme.) It is, of course, complete horseshit.
Snopes has posted a pretty thorough debunking that makes clear how the quotes in question are either grotesquely twisted out of proportion, are jammed-up misquotes, or outright fabrications. One fake "quote" in particular stands out:
I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s race.
As Snopes notes, "no such sentence (nor anything close to it) appears anywhere in either Dreams from My Father or The Audacity of Hope." Nor can anything like it be found in any speech or article by him. Never said it, and he never would.
So who did say it?
The "quote" is actually taken (and slightly edited) from a line in a March 2007 American Conservative magazine article about Barack Obama:
In reality, Obama provides a disturbing test of the best-case scenario of whether America can indeed move beyond race. He inherited his father’s penetrating intelligence; was raised mostly by his loving liberal white grandparents in multiracial, laid-back Hawaii, where America’s normal race rules never applied; and received a superb private school education. And yet, at least through age 33 when he wrote Dreams from My Father, he found solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against his mother’s race.
The author of the article in question?
Why, our old friend Steve Sailer, who has been peddling this schtick about Obama — making his presidential candidacy into nothing but a referendum on race, and insisting that Obama reflects a malignant "foreign" influence — for a good long while. Remember when he called Obama a "wigger"?
And he’s been peddling racially incendiary horseshit for even longer. Both the folks at Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting and Media Matters have the complete rundown. He’s a racist, a white supremacist in pseudo-academic clothing. And his words, his depiction of Obama, are being promoted around the Intertoobs as being Obama’s own words.
Chutzpah doesn’t begin to describe it.
Incidentally, it’s worth recalling that Sailer’s American Conservative article was the very piece that inspired Alexander Konetzki to leave that rag. What he said about it at the time:
I realized that, in addition to the racist associations he employs, Sailer frequently quotes Obama out of context and makes assertions about Obama’s racial identity that the book flatly contradicts.
Sailer is, to put it nicely, dishonest — something he’s long been noted for.
Also worth noting is the oh-so-very-special quote at the end of the compilation in the e-mail smear that the writer urges readers to pay special attention to:
I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.
Well, here’s the entire passage:
In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.
Maybe Steve Sailer wouldn’t, but — knowing the deep history of that episode well — I for one would be proud to stand with Obama. And most of the "real Americans" I know would too.
[Hat tips to lokywocky and Smgumby.]
UPDATE: Obama now has a site dedicated to addressing the smears.

so!
goopers will paint Obama as a radical– they’d try find “burn baby burn” quotes but most of the electorate is too young to know what they are talking about. In fact- age is going to be a bigger issue as the pre boomer McBush and his reactionary ass kissin cousins take on the post boomer Obama and his “what the fuck are they talkin about” minions.
Talk about a generation gap- this is a chasm…The Obama people weren’t born until well after the war in viet nam- the civil rights movement- Gloria Steinem- et al.
Two different world views are about to come into a head on collision.
Bon Appetite!
Obama himself was 14 years old when the last helicopters flew of the embassy roof in Saigon.
David,
Thanks for making this even more public. I just wish we could figure out how to make your article viral so that it would go everywhere that stupid email has been. And that it would go at least once a week from now until the election.
Thanks for the h/t.
Nice post – this piece illustrates the degree to which the GOP slimers are simply con artists. there’s no issue of principle of ideology or political vision – it’s just a game, and spreading lies is part of the way they’ve one.
I’ve come to see the current political contest as less about progressive vs conservative politics; than a clash between the propaganda-slingers (currently but historically far from always on the right), and those of us who prefer a rational dialogue.
Thoughtful, informed posts like this are part of the antidote to the poison these con-men dispense to us all.
There’s always our friend Digg.
so glad to see the young man from Illinois followed my suggestion and
debuted his own Snopes site!
Digg is a great friend.
Digg is giving me the run-around…

In case you haven’t seen it…here’s why I’m voting Republican:

David –
so far I’m getting the BO campaign will avoid piles of poo whenever they can and will answer to what they wish to answer to on their own schedule – fine.
that said, am I naive to wonder why the campaign just doesn’t send out surrogates to not only refute this crap, but specifically call these lying piglets out and give a little soundbite background on their, um, work in the past ??
priceless!!!
Raises the question: how on Earth do we combat the viral-slime-email technique?
On a couple of occasions I’ve received these things (from a cranky second cousin, as it happens) and have been incensed enough to reply with a simple, “Please don’t forward this kind of thing to me.” It hasn’t completely stopped the flow of forwarded stuff, and I’m sure it hasn’t stopped him from forwarding anything to others.
Anybody have ideas for combating this crap?
That’s
great“awesome”.I think the main reason not to make it a priority is that you don’t want to give these cretins any more credibility than they deserve by making a big deal out of them.
Obama is the Aikido candidate.
thanks David.

Educate them, don’t ignore them. Just your basic organizing technique – one person at a time.
Deflect and sometimes, absorb.
He’s really very good at it, and the direct shots seem to melt away.
Senator Obama has much richer, fuller political skills than I gave him credit for.
It’s called ‘experience’. While HRC touted her time being married to POTUS as part of her experience, everyone in the MSM discounted Obama’s years of community organizing. Plus, he’s been through the campaigns for State Senate, and US Senate, where by all accounts he started out as the total underdog every time and then won.
David,
One problem with some of those emails is they come with a “THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED BY SNOPES” message as an attempt to inoculate the sender. Of course, as you note, Snopes has done no such thing but we also have to make sure and inform the low info types of this fact.
I’m reading his books right now. The cat is very smart, and very politically astute. Have you seen the YouTube clip of him speaking with his staff in Chicago after becoming the presumptive nominee?
Yep, saw that.
Beyond his years, and in the same sphere as Bubba – only time will tell whether he has that kind of charisma – personal magnetism off the charts.
I keep meeting people who have met Obama, and they describe him in the same realm. But I think he’s actually a more patient man.
Yep.
BTW, everyone oughta get and read this book:
The True Patriot.
that talk he gave to chicago staff is really pretty impressive. we were talking about it at home and really liking how it showed what real transparency could do. he certainly knew that talk would get out, but he was also just speaking to the people there in front of him. pretty cool.
and LS, we died laughing at that “why I’m voting republican” piece the other night when a friend forwarded it. “cause I don’t deserve healthcare”. too funny …
david, we’ve gotten that obama racist email forwarded on from my f-i-l. sigh … he doesn’t even realize how he’s being used… b5 responded to the whole list, pointed ‘em at snopes where the email is debunked, and actually got a number of thanks back from folks. like sd sez, ya gotta respond one by one, especially when it’s coming from a friend or family member.
Tula has a brand new thread ready upstairs.
Stop the racist crap–or at least stop it from coming to you by picking out a key segment of this posting, put it in an email with a link to this post and send it to whoever sent you the slime email. Use the subject header: racist anti-Obama emails are lies. Suggest he “send it back” to whoever he got the slime email from.
Oh, and a link to the Why I’m Voting Republican at youtube would be good, too.
