McCain reluctant to talk about Vietnam

Same day from his designated flack, Joe Lieberman:

I mean the obvious fact is that more than most any American, Senator McCain knows the sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make, and the burden that their families bear. And it really is wrong to suggest otherwise… from his own service and incarceration…

And then there’s this:

On Wednesday, McCain’s campaign expanded the reach of his first major television ad of the general election campaign _ a commercial where McCain speaks directly to the camera about being shot down in Vietnam and his years of captivity.

John McCain on his particular service and being singled out for it:

"I don’t think I did anything that any other American wouldn’t do…"

But when Obama criticizes his position on vet benefits eleven days ago:

McCain responded with a sharp statement saying that he wouldn’t listen to any lectures on veterans’ affairs from Obama, "who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform."

Funny how his barbecue buddies don’t notice the inconsistency. There is, of course, nothing wrong with mentioning military service, or even trumpeting it. But do not sell us the story that he does not do so, as he uses it at the first — are relatively irrelevant opportunity — to bludgeon his opponent who happened to come of age during one of this nation’s rare (since 1945) warless periods.
