Presumably this tape is in the hands of GOP operatives and, as reported by FOX yesterday, also in the possession of at least one news network.

Just made a phone call. The woman who answered said that “Montgomery” Sinclair was renting a room and that was all. I commented about them sending out stuff on his behalf and she said that they were not. So I suggested nicely that they might want to check out the stuff HE was sending out since he was giving everyone the impression that he had their endorsement as well. I also said that since they own the building they might want to be a little more selective regarding their ‘tenants’.

National Security is the all important, all encompassing issue that everything else positively has to revolve around. Even when the people touting its importance don’t have the slightest fucking clue how to achieve it.

I have called the National Press Club three times. The first time, I was connected to the General Manager, Bill McCarren, and told him my name and that I was calling about the program the Club has scheduled next Wednesday with Larry Sinclair. Suddenly, I was cut off. When I called back the second time, exactly the same thing happened. On the third call, I explained to the receptionist what had happened, and told her it appeared Mr McCarren wasn’t taking calls on this issue, and did I need to call my friend, the President Emeritus of the Press Club, since the General Manager wasn’t taking calls?

(This part is true, actually — the past President is a close friend.)

I left a message on my third call with the current President, Sylvia Smith, who just returned my call. Ms Smith is very irritated that we don’t have our facts straight, she says, and she’s gotten six calls so far on this topic. According to Ms Smith, the “allegation” that the National Press Club is hosting Larry Sinclair is false — he has rented a room and is holding his own event. They are not sponsoring it, and they are not responsible for vetting his claims.

I thanked her for calling and told her I would let people here know her position. She asked where “here” was and I told her firedoglake.com. I also told her that I knew it wasn’t National Press Club policy in the past to rent rooms to known liars and that perhaps they should re-instate that policy.

So — should we start renting rooms to talk about Cindy McCain’s drug use? How about Laura Bush’s Mayflower Hotel stays?

I also said that supporting lies and slander is bad for everyone, but also that by inviting this man’s evil, they are inviting trouble on their organization.

My late Dad enjoyed a highly respected career as a reporter and later news editor for several of our nation’s most respected daily newspapers. He was also a proud member of the NPC and is surely railing from the heavens at the NPC moron/s responsible for welcoming such a miscreant inside their portals.

The NPC staffer who answered my phone call vehemently denied Larry Sinclair was an invited guest, claiming the NPC simply rented him a room. At my request she connected me to the current president of the group and I left her a blistering rant and demand for a public statement of apology. Am not holding my breath though hope burns eternal. ;~(

Had the same issue with my work overseas, using ‘Russian’ as part of the name of the fund, needed to check carefully to make sure this was staying within the law. Apparently with one ending the word can be legally used outside the government, but the other ending is reserved for official business.

This tells me that they are using NPC to market their Obama slander under the protective guise of NPC.

Veritas is a (probably trademarked) name for a christian home schooling group selling various homeschooling materials for christian home schooling families who incorporate christian teachings with schooling. Nothing wrong with that that I know of. Is the name a catch phrase used to attract?

Hi, this is my first post so please forgive any missteps. Today, I called the NPC and I was very respectful and asked the greeter ‘who could I speak to about Larry Sinclair’s appearance next week at the NPC?”…she said I could speak to Bill the General Manager and transferred me. (I think it’s important to be polite to get through to someone). Bill immediately answered his phone and I told him that I was calling to “strongly request the NPC not to sponsor Larry Sinclair’s appearance next week as his views were known to be smears and debunked lies”. I also told him I was calling from across the country in Colorado.

He was firm but polite and said he ‘had had about 25 calls about this already and the NPC was not sponsoring Larry Sinclair”. He went on to explain that the NPC has many layers and one is to rent rooms like a hotel to anyone who pays for it and since Larry Sinclair was a citizen he was entitled like other citizens to rent a room and to hold a press conference that reporters could either cover or not cover. He said many people rent rooms in the ‘hotel portion’ of the NPC and that other people had done so in the past and would continue in the future and the NPC and the reporters had no say about what would be discussed by Larry Sinclair. I asked him if the reporters would challenge the smears and he said he had no control over what would be asked of Larry, or even if “any reporters would show up to cover him”. He said most people in the D.C. area knew about this arrangement at the NPC. He advised that maybe folks should “just take a breather and calm down a bit”. Again, he was firm in his beliefs but quite cordial.

I advised him that I was across the country from him and was unaware of the way the NPC operated and because of the prestige and cache of the NPC, would he consider putting out a press release to clarify the position of the NPC by saying that the NPC was not sponsoring Larry Sinclair or endorsing tacitly or implicitly his views. I explained that I agreed with him that citizens have a right to express their views, even those that are controversial, but reporters and the NPC have a duty to fact check and report truth and not lies or innuendo. I advised him that he would probably get many more calls because many of us are upset that the NPC is being used to give credibility (unwittingly) to someone who has proven to be a debunked, disturbed liar.

He said ‘maybe they would consider it’ but he had just received an email from someone who said Larry was a “convicted felon” and if that were true he wouldn’t be able to appear at the NPC at all so he (Bill) had doubts that all the email accusations against Larry were true. I thanked him for his time and for hearing me out. He spoke to me for about 10 minutes.

I suggest that we provide proof to the NPC of Larry Sinclair’s statements and debunked smears and ask the NPC to put out a press release denouncing Larry’s statements and clarifying their position as being for fair reporting and journalistic integrity as their values statement on their website says.

It’s good to know that they are hearing us and taking our comments seriously. Let’s continue to Speak Truth to Power!!!!

Hello everyone. I am making this short post to let those who know in their hearts that I am telling the truth and am standing for all voters, I will do everything in my power to be at the Obama VA Town-hall meeting later today June 5, 2008.

It is your choice if you want to help me get to that meeting. I think by now everyone here knows how to go about helping. I will be going if I can afford it and I will be seeking PRESS credentials for it as well.

Let Sinclair Media do what MSNBC and CNN and all the other media do not have the guts to do.”

well, damn. poor fella couldn’t make it to the town hall meeting. is there a remote possibility that mr. obama would/could attend the “press conference” with a member of the [bill moyers catch-the-attacker] press?

or on the other hand, perhaps larry JOHNSON would like to attend…

Yeah, I also called the NPC. I’m a big fan of firedoglake–it’s one of the six political blogs I visit daily, but I would have appreciated knowing that the National Press Club was *not* technically sponsoring him before I called, because the receptionist told me that & I was left high and dry.
I’m not sure where to go from here. Should we ask the NPC to cancel?

yes, it’s puzzling. here he is, a scam artist leeching off people who buy his line, getting front money from someone/”lawyer” to arrange use of meeting room, CLEARLY announcing refund policy so that people will DONATE (but obviously NOT IN TIME nurk nurk) and he can try again and again (as he has been doing) whatever is the poor attorney doing, hoping to break even?
while we, the elite smarties, neglect to examine the details and, yep, go knee-jerking all over, only to end up more puzzled: i actually want him to be able to get there! so he’ll stop stealing, but how dumb can they be?, or who is it that’s really dumb? and why are OUR headlines so misleading??

Maybe this will bring about a change in NPC policy. Refusing to allow their facilities to be used for press conferences that are potentially slanderous and that have nothing to do with policy or governance might be something they would want to consider.

One of the issues with the NPC, as opposed to your average hotel conference room, is that the NPC provides a direct feed to major news outlets across the country. Even if only two reporters actually show up, every newsroom from Bangor Maine, to San Diego will have the opportunity to watch it.
