They’ve titled it "The Passion of the Blog," which is an appropriate title for any debate with Jane. It’s a pretty congenial discussion, but the treat is getting Jane’s thoughts on the election.
Jane Spars With Brink Lindsey At Bloggingheads |
|
| By: David Neiwert Thursday June 5, 2008 4:02 pm | |
The Cato Institute’s Brink Lindsey joined our Very Own Jane Hamsher on Monday for a spirited post-mortem on the primary season, Harriet Christian, what Obama will have to do to draw Hillary voters into the fold, and how Bush-hatred brought us all together. And lots more. It’s up on the New York Times webpage.

Unity! go Jane!
Hi David and Firedogs…
(Tap, tap) Is this thing on?
They don’t let us imbed the video, so I created a link to the Bloggingheads page with the image.
yo
I’m thinkin’ that witha 60 minute video posted, it may be a while before the commenters start commenting….
Hi Jane. Listening in the other window.
Well, chew on this while you watch:
Hi Lady Jane
“pro-life” = forced birth
Cool.
I guess a member of the cato institute is a slightly better match this time.
I disagree that Obama is in trouble with “white women”. I’m tired of the slice and dice discussion of the primaries. Just white men (and other ethnicities) fall all over the political spectrum, so do white women.
the GE is a whole new ballgame.
Hi Jane,
I wanted to make a comment about hour HuffPo article today. You told the story of Obama calling a woman reporter “Sweetie” without adding a clarification that after the event, Obama called that reporter personally, apologized and said that “sweetie” is a bad habit he has – from calling his two daughters sweetie all the time, and made arrangements with the reporter for a personal interview later on that day.
The reporter provided this information – it did not come from the Obama campaign team.
I respectfully think that if “we” repeat stories like that we need to provide clarification and follow-up if it is available. The Repubs will do a great job of repeating the story without follow-up as a way to attack Obama. Let’s not help them spread disinformation.
Thanks.
Damn, I’m gettin’ good at this stuff. Swopa’s post, Jane’s post and watchin’ Lady Jane and the libertarian.
Certainly not as delusional as Red State or several others…! ;-)
Jane, alas, is in transit today to the big media confab in Minneapolis. She asked me to put this up since it became available today.
And I’m not nearly as charming company, either, I’m sorry to say. … Anyone wanna beer? All I have is Oly …
Thanks for holding down the fort David.
Don’t hafta ask me twice.
You probably wouldn’t look quite that good with that shade of lip gloss, either.
Very nice! Saw already.
Mama come here quick
Got rerouted to Rochester for refueling, we couldn’t land because weather bad in Minneapolis.
Blergh.
It’s bad enough to have to watch the basketball game without my little guy. Now I might not be able to watch it at all.
Karmic revenge for abandoning Kobe when he goes up against CELTICS BITCHEZ!!!!
…glad it’s not Bud! Hi David.
BTW, I don’t believe Obama needs a woman on the ticket. If the biggest issue is the war, then perhaps he needs someone with unquestioned credentials in that area. I think some of hil’s appeal, too, was to her particular group of peers i.e. age.
How could that be, you gotta be in the air?
Please pass my comment along – I think it is important for all of “us” involved in the public media to be really careful about how we enable the opposition if we get careless about how we speak about issues and events.
Thanks!
This was a comment left over on the comments section of the blog Jane is talking on.
She would rather vote for McCain.
I would point out to anyone who has this point of view that the Republican Party keeps on nominating white males, generally of privilege. I haven’t seen any serious female candidates come out of that party. There has never been the equivalent of a Hillary Clinton in the Republican Party. At least the Democratic Party has made the shift from having just white men to both women and people of color. So, if your ego is more important than your country go ahead and vote for John McCain.
Jane gets better and better, this is a good discussion.
quick OT, but does anyone remember BobbyG’s loooonnnggggg name for Barak
(the one that busts the margins)..
I want to show my husband:)
wow, that’s a fairly remarkable post. hmmm ….
I think that spending time on stuff like this is. . .well, a waste of time.
Damn, the trolls are followin’ Lady Jane around.
Heh, Go Celtics…! 8-P
don’t mind if I do, may I offer you some crab chips?
And, in addition, it’s 50-50 it’s troll.
You is one smart mofo, specially when we agree on the same keystroke.
That person is either a troll or is on the Swift Boat groups email list of smear crap since every single thing she/he/it states as why not to vote for Obama is a known smear.
Don’t feed the trolls!!
mmm. crab chips.
Let’s see if Ray Allen can hit a bull in the butt with a base fiddle with someone up in his face.
Those anything like buffalo chips?
I love it when Jane or Christy talk about sports so I don’t have to catch a raft of shit from some holier-than-thou classical music freak!
Jane, Good discussion. IMO some older women actually pay attention to the issues. I saw Obama at GA Tech over a year ago when I was only 57 yrs. and he swayed me then. It’s not just about the speeches, it was the stands that he took. As much as I hated the term “Sweetie”, I just can’t fathom four years of McCain’s “my friends”.
Yeah, go Celtics!
I have a long standing love affair with that franchise. Had my pic taken at Faneuil Hall with the Red Auerbach statute and put my feet next to Bird’s LOL.
I’m rather fickle with the Lakers, though I loved Kareem and Magic. sorry, can’t tolerate Kobe.
Go Celtics.
I understand your thoughts, at least I think I do. The Rethugs will be latching on to these AnnaB arguements too. Some folks are too far gone, too invested in what they thought Hillary would do as President. I think that there are others who can see that not all is lost and down the road a woman will run this country. I believe that will happen before I pass from the this place.
Oh scuze me I meant “aficionado”.
No!
You must not go to the Varsity much :)
My antennae are highly sensitive to them after the last month or so. Like all good wingers they give themselves away with keywords. Not the brightest stars in the sky.
I’ll take “sweetie” over the C word any day. He was being nice and pleasant, not meanspirited. So if that’s his biggest sin…
:]
Officer material.
lol @ 26 AAAhhhhhh….
When Obama said Sweetie, he actually reminded me of my Dad, kinda old fashion. Go Celtics!
Heh, ain’t that the truth! ;-)
Yea, and I get really “offended” when a southern lady in the corner store calls me “honey”.
CT did you the the link I sent you RE History of their rivalry over the years??
I agree with you, hon ;)
Please see my comment at 16 regarding the “sweetie” thing. I’m sure Obama would apologize for offending you and everyone else with what he said. He calls his two daughters sweetie a lot – and he said it’s a bad habit that he needs to work on.
He called the reporter personally and apologized to her as well.
Whatever their individual reasoning I think we’re saddled with a number of them until Nov. They seem to be different from the run-of-the-mill disrupters.
Raven, They even have the Varsity in the burbs and it is still really greasy.
I calls lot’s of my female friends sugar magnolia. . .
LOL.
jinx! big boy
OT…
Hmmmm, someone was talking about something like this a couple of weeks ago..
‘BT should face prosecution for its “illegal” trials of a controversial ad-serving technology, a leading computer security researcher has said.
Dr Richard Clayton at the University of Cambridge made his comments after reviewing a leaked BT internal report.
The document reveals details of a 2006 BT trial with the Phorm system, which matches adverts to users’ web habits.’
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7438578.stm
I live in Athens.
bless their hearts, dear.
As usual, Jane rawks! Jane you can probably get funding as an alternative source of energy!
oops linky http://www.latimes.com/sports/…..ory?page=1
That’s a class act. I cannot in my wildest dreams see a Rethug doing that. Spend 10 minutes on every bobblehead show defending the comment.
The Greasy V
gtg sweetie pups!
BTW I know we were all the same sweet page about the c word. I just do not understand the harriet christians of the world. no need to help me in that dept.
ciao
I just rechecked my email, I didn’t see it! Did you send it to my msn account?
My bride is always saying that, she’s from ol Vigginy.
the vocabulary of the opponent does consist entirely of con talking points this time!
And Brink decicided he doesn’t want a theocracy after all, who knew.
I’ve eaten at three of the restaurants and everytime I still say it’s greasy!! lol
If it ain’t a greasy spoon, it ain’t worth eatin’ at.
Been through the feminist wars and got the scars to prove it. I supported Edwards, now Obama.
I think it is good to not glom ALL older women in one bloc. When Edwards suspended, his followers BRANCHED to both Hillary and Barack. Didn’t stay in one single herd.
Thank you, Jane. Liked your quiet and thoughtful presentation of your perspective.
I also think ageism and reverse ageism crops up here, too. Experience deserves its due. As does passion, instincts and communication skills. I think with all three candidates, there is and has been some gratuitous and not so pretty hurtfulness going on… re racism, sexism and ageism and reverse ageism but also some important and passionate explorations.
I think Barack has good instincts and empathy and I think he will prove himself with many of the HRC supporters, and hopefuly all of us more and more by November and beyond.
I also think Barack’s friend, Oprah, such a serious advocate for women, will help that healing, too.
Hi had an incident here in my hometown (Missoula Montana) where he promised a very young fan (about 3 years old) that he would sign his T-shirt after the speech.
Afterwards, he left the arena, and then about 20 minutes later, he came back to the door with several of his people, located the little guy and his mom, and signed the shirt.
Obama keeps his word – even if it is to a small child. I like that!
Heh, I just got to the part where Brink says there’s a lot of issues that the Libertarians and the Liberals/Progressives see eye-to-eye on…! ;-)
Since I don’t eat burgers I get an Orange and a chicken salad sandwich when they have they hot rod shows there in the summer.
yes if you don’t check then send me one where you do
Here is the link again…you will like it!!
You’d love this joint, southern vegetarian
The Grit
Heh, Just a little bit of a biased view on the rivalry… eh? ;-)
That was for you, nahant!
Ya Think..
never been to athens, but there’s a veggie diner in atlanta i’ve been to a couple times that the Grit menu reminds me of… always late at night, with friends, so i don’t really know where it is …
I’m definitely an old poor southern food lover (seein’s how we were poor southerners.) Grew up on grits, greens, all that stuff. Only thing I leave out now is the meat. Cookin’ at home is a lot cheaper anyhow. Particularly now.
gotta work on the volume thing, i keep turning it up and down.
Proly the biscuit
What? No red/blue team games?
This vegetarian restaurant is in Sandy Springs, GA. http://www.cafesunflower.com Try it sometime if you’re in the area.
Yup, I’ve converted in 23 years living here. We do that low-carb no white stuff so I make sweet potato, potato salad, red beans and brown rice. . . stuff like dat.
Late to the thread and OT but Oly had one of the best ad campaigns evah back in the late ’70s/early ’80s –
Are there or aren’t there artesians?
Do you think one will ever be found?
Well, pour me another cold Oly my friend,
The question is worth one more round
That looks great! Maybe when we goes to the REM gig.
Heh, Just a little bit of a biased view on the rivalry… eh? ;-)
Hard times for a Pacers fan – missed the playoffs for the 2nd straight year. Sux to be me.
If we could only suit up the GM (Larry Bird), make a phone call to Reggie Miller, convince Mark Jackson that he can still play the point…
hmmm … dunno … name doesn’t seem quite familiar. I mostly remember getting some kind of platter w/ n choices… like i said, always late at night and perhaps not at my most sober … a quick google didn’t turn anything up, so maybe i’ll head to the biscuit next time i’m there. (was just in atlanta yesterday, but no time to eat anything, much less go somewhere i wanted to go.)
lol @ Broderism :)
When we didn’t have cable in Urbana we’d drive to Rantoul to see Chet Walker, Butter Bean Bob Love, Jerry Sloan on those just OK bulls teams.
Lee5, where abouts do you live? I’m just north in Roswell.
The biscuit is not strictly veggie. There is one at 10th and Piedmont and one near Lil 5.
colorado ;) atlanta trip was for business … visiting that famous media company there …
Binky doesn’t address what a disaster the free trade agreements are. Still sings that free market tune. yuck.
Butter Bean!! (haven’t thought about him for ages)
I only remember Chet Walker as a 76′er…
If you eat meat try the Kool Corners on 14th right down from Turner. It’s a cuban samwhich joint that kills.
i do my best to stay all veggie. biz travel makes that a challenge. it’s nice to be back home now. dinner w/ my sweetie tonight ;)
Love retired in 1977 with career totals of 13,895 points and 4,653 rebounds. He suffered from a stuttering problem, which prevented him from finding meaningful employment after his playing days were over. At one point, Love was a dishwasher making $4.45 an hour. Eventually, the owner of the restaurant where Love washed dishes offered to pay for speech therapy classes, and in 1993 he returned to the Chicago Bulls as their director of community relations. In recent years, Love has also become a motivational speaker.
right arm!
I don’t think that Brink reads FDL, lol.
Haven’t thought about Rantoul in decades! It’s from the wayback machine.
Walker played his final six seasons with the Chicago Bulls, and never averaged less than 19.2 points and 5.0 rebounds a game.
They closed Chanute years ago and it has actually made a decent comeback.
Great discussion. Well done, Lady Jane. Would that more folks at Cato were this reasonable.
I think we can relegate that one with the 20-something airhead to the trash can.
That’s a great story.
Butterbean could light it. I am glad things worked out for him. Now, where’s Gar Heard and Van Lier?
So isn’t Michelle Obama a mom and a career woman a feminist who fought those battles with the good docs at the hospital she administrated? And doesn’t she as a healthcare professional know athing or two about the realities having boots on the turf for years? Family values too.
Yeah, still a little drunk on the freemarket kool-aid.
Chuck Todd saying that Indiana could be the key to the electoral college?
Oh goody (rubbing hands in glee).
Rut ro, two more of those posts that get me lost!
Reid hints that Lieberman may be booted from committee chairmanship
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/….._0605.html
Come on Harry – if you can’t grow a pair wrt JoeLie, there is simply no hope for either of you.
Jane, I really enjoyed your discussion. It was great. Lots of good points all around.
well, that was fun. I have to say that I’m * shocked * just * shocked * to hear that Jane is a * cough cough * “liberal.”
that couldn’t happen to soon, or to a “nicer” guy …
yeah, my comment got moderated on that one ;)
i was also pleased to see this, linked from the rawstory post you pointed at
http://blogs.abcnews.com/polit…..ronts.html
Great comment. That should help some folks get a handle on where we are going and where Obama and company are taking us. Thanks for sharing that. I do see empathy that will carry in all his dealings.
l8r all, gotta run, off to get some nice hometown veggie food ;)
I think they’re talking about at the beginning of the new Congress, the 111th. It ain’t gonna happen during the 110th. The Dems still need his vote on some stuff. After Nov, not so much, methinks.
I wish the 110th would just sit on their hands for the rest of the term.
Works for me.
I think they’re talking about at the beginning of the new Congress, the 111th.
I don’t see it in there, but – could be. Harry still sounding pretty spineless in that article though.
What the hell does it take for Harry to boot his “good friend”? Has Lieberman ever even changed back from the party of Connecticut for Lieberman to again become, in name at least, a Democrat?
Richard Clarke on KO laying into McSame and the lies that got us into war.
Hard to describe what a clusterfuck it really was. Beyond insane.
I’ll give him credit for being disillusioned with all the corporatism. Competition and corporatism don’t mix. Every time I hear some megacorp say that by expanding into an area, incidentally putting all the small businesses out of business, promotes competition, blah, blah, blah. What a crock o’ shit.
I wish the 110th would just sit on their hands for the rest of the term.
Finally – a request that Congress might reasonably be expected to achieve!!
I liked his phrase “competitive market.”
Thanks Deb, I thought Clarke spoke well.
I think committee chair appointments are pretty much etched in stone at the beginning of each congress. Its done by resolution.
lol! Sadly, they seem bound and determined to pass more crap.
He was talking “truth and reconciliation commission”
I want hard time in jail for the Bush Crime Family.
Really hard time.
Read his book revealing the ‘putch’ to war early in the administration and they did not dfend us from the 911 attack,,,instead used it to start the war. Start the Impeachment there are enough people to tesitfy to the crimes.
Thanks! I think Obama has a very wise, chess board strategy mentality! Actually responds to a given moment thoughtfully. Has confidence in the process. I hope that proves out.
I just heard that probably Jim Webb is off the VP list, since he was not very validating about women in the military a while back, though did apologize. To appease the HRC wounded supporters, Rachel Maddow asserts Webb will be off the VP list, though his military background would have been helpful getting some conservatives to cross the line.
and restitution.
Richard Clarke on KO
Says (about the Bush admin) “I don’t see how, after 4,000 deaths and 25,00 grievously wounded, we ever let these people back into polite society”.
Prisons aren’t considered polite society, are they?
That’s what we had before all the mega mergers. Wall Street’s obsession with quarterly earnings in order to boost stock prices started about the same time.
If you’re talking about his first book I read it.
It would seem that Nancy Pelosi did not.
The diehard Hillary supporters are going to vote for Johnny McTeleprompter because they:
*LOVE ENDLESS WARS
*LOVE TORTURE
*LOVE CORRUPTION
*HAD NO PROBLEM WITH ENRON STEALING BILLIONS
*LOVE OUR GOVERNMENT SPYING ON US ILLEGALLY & USING 9/11 AS A REASON TO DO IT WHEN IT’S NOT EVEN CLOSE AS TO THE REASON THEY’RE DOING IT
*LOVE, LOVE, LOVE OLD MEN WHO CALL WOMEN C**TS & WHORES
*LOVE THE IDEA OF AMERICA SPENDING MONEY ON AN ILLEGAL OCCUPATION RATHER THAN SECURING OUR COUNTRY.
Well, there you have it. The diehard Hillary supporters are neocons just like Rush Limbaugh & Karl Rove who support her. Nice, huh?
Did Richard Clarke mention Rocco Martino? He’s the guy who stole the Niger letterhead out of Niger’s embassy in Rome, Italy and this letterhead was used to forge the document that made it look like Niger and Saddam Hussein were conspiring about yellowcake uranium.
I missed that part but feel that a “truth and reconciliation commission” should take place in Iraq.
If we can’t deal with BushCo domestically I think the ICC is appropriate.
Competition implies rules. What Brink seemly fails to see is that unions are part of the rules.
Vote McCain!!!!
Libertarians are dead set against any kind of regulation. Look where that’s gotten us.
And they’re not particularly fond of unions, either.
Eli’s upstairs
Libertarians are all “all for me, me for me” and unfortunately, they can’t seem to realize that without the rest of us, and our irritating rules, unions, and government, they wouldn’t be where they are.
Apparently they are not so found a theocracy either.
Eli’s thread
Brink Lindsay was the guy who inspired me to start Democratic Veteran almost seven years ago. Interesting to see he’s at the Cato Institute (maybe he was then, I don’t know for sure) but unsurprising too.
Fun to watch this game @ 5 pm in the afternoon, non?
