Zombie John McCain was not so gracious, making an obvious and tasteless play for disgruntled Hillary voters by talking her up while suggesting that "pundits and party elders" stole the nomination away from her ("Obama has disenfranchised you! Vote for me! I love Hillary!"), while speaking to an audience of about 80 white guys.
McCain also took pains (and I mean that literally - he looked pained) to belittle Obama as a green lightweight, and to ridicule him for repeating over and over that a McCain presidency would be a third term for George W. Bush, because he's totally a maverick who opposes Dubya all the time. Plus it's not ironic at all for a Republican to accuse someone of repeating an untruth over and over again to make it sound truthy...
Mercifully, MSNBC and CNN cut away from McCain's soporific droning about how Obama's policies are "not change we can believe in" (because McCain is the real Change Candidate, just like Dubya was eight years ago) to call it for Obama and talk about what a wonderful historic moment this is. Beautiful.
The other noteworthy event was Hillary's somewhat enigmatic speech to a huge, enthusiastic crowd, which, while uplifting, was also very inconclusive - it was not actually a concession speech, and all she said about her plans was "no decision tonight." Scuttlebutt on TV is that she wants to meet face-to-face with Obama before charting her next move.
In case I didn't make it clear enough, the difference in production values between the McCain and Clinton/Obama speeches was just amazing. McCain's was just a guy on a stage talking to a small group of people, and not a lot of energy on the stage or in the audience. Clinton and Obama were surrounded by energized, well-dressed supporters - and I do mean surrounded, so that when the camera was on them, you could see the people behind them reacting, as opposed to McCain's sickly green backdrop. And everything, and everyone, just looked great.
And the best line of the night is a throwaway from Cliff's primary liveblogging:
9:43 - Somewhere at this very moment, Mitt Romney's hair is combing itself.
It's funny because it's true. Now let's go get McCain.

Eli!
Obama!
Hurray for Obama and for all of us, now the hard campaign to November begins, at last.
It’s a good day for America.
Hour’s late, I’ve overstayed. S’long, pups.
Thanks Eli.
nite prairie
My pleasure. I just updated the post, I realized I forgot something important at the end…
Eli!!!
Aloha, Prairie! Aloha, Eli!

Aloha, Suzanne, Ctut!
McChange!
Hee. Hiya, siri!
Hi Eli. I am thrilled with tonight.
McChange, Depends.
Hi Betsy. I’m mostly just glad that it’s over.
while speaking to an audience of about 80 white guys.
In Louisiana thats all the support he has? Did all the African American Republicans lose their homes to Katrina?
I’m not going to make that image!
Those are going to be great sound bites, McCain saying “third Bush term” over and over and over again, as he attempted to refute it tonight. At which, by the way, he failed utterly.
Mixed bag for me Betsy, my Grandma passed away today…!
Excellent. Thanks Eli.
Obama who cannot win white working class votes, is slaughtering Clinton in Montana. We have the third lowest household income in the nation, lead the nation in percentage of people working two or more jobs, and are on of the ten whitest states in the US (over 90% white with 0.4% African Americans).
shoe p0rn up at my place (for those so inclined)
Howard Fineman and Timmeh reporting diametrically opposing stories:
Fineman: Hillary just wants to be asked, but really doesn’t want the job…
Timmeh: Hillary *really* wants to be V.P.
???????
Unfortunately Bush WAS all about change.
All of it bad beyond even my worst nightmares.
Left turn Clyde.
ohhhhh (((ct))) and (((ct family)))
Oh, so sorry for your loss! Hugs to you and the family.
OK, now for a short, hard, brutal, uphill fight!!
Wow! I want toes like that.
I take it that that is not an appropriate topic for this blog.
(((((CTuttle)))))
So sorry to hear that. (((((CT)))))
(((CTuttle)))
Meet with Obama? She wants to meet with Obama? I’m Barry I say “Look sweatie, we saved you a seat, but the train’s leavin’ the station.” She needs to bring to the table what she can and will do for him. Otherwise, he should tell her to piss off. Hope it doesn’t come to that.
McInsane loves — your children for the US Army. Sign them up at 16! We guarantee them a war of our choosing! And after 11 years a second class education at Halliburton U.!

nice toes tho!
Let’s start Digging for Eli!
lol :)
welcome back, suzanne
Thanks ya’ll! I truly appreciate your condolences!!!
McCain looks like Charlie Chaplain in his later years. His speech appeared to have been given in the banquet room of a Kenner coffee shop. Which was just fine because it was a lousy speech anyway. But still, you’d think he’d at least try to make it LOOK good…
Sorry, CT. My condolences to you & the family.
Good night. In many ways!
that’s our boy! go Barack!
That’s IT!!!!! I’ve been trying to put my finger on it. He gets more stooped over every day.
Funny thing is, so does Howard Dean. But Dean is more Limelight/Monsieur Verdoux Chaplin, and McCain is more A King In New York…
Not saying this as a partisan, but all the speeches of his that I’ve seen (not all that many) sucked.
I’m so sorry, CTut. Peace.
shoes…sports…pens…
where do you draw the line?
baby girl left for utah sun late afternoon - a very dear friend of hers was in a horrible collision (drunk driver crossed freeway and hit her head on). stephanie wanted to head back to be with her friend and friend’s family. she got home at 6am ca time mon morning.
and yeah, it was forking great spending time with baby girl. saw family i had not seen in 30 years at the wedding and my mom had all 3 of her kids in the same room for the first time in 7 years.
and those are grandma toesies
In other election news, California’s prop 98 is going down in flames. And Mike Lumpkin gets to take on Duncan Hunter Jr. (Nepotistic R) for the CA-52 house seat. I wonder how many Republicans voted for little Duncan, thinking they were voting for his daddy.
you know you all aren’t white. Just really light black people that look white *g*
Now, Suz, I doth protest! You have pics of your feet and your back… Now when do we get to see what your outfit looks like? Hmmm…?
great stuff @ cspan about energy prices being manipulated because of an enron”loophole” and colusion by Dubai,Brits, texas, hedge funds and speculators because of the Grahamm (Macain eco genius)that slipped in a dereg law in 2000. Also that the housing market problem stems from the same law
Hillary’s speech was an embarrassment.
It was a selfish and graceless and she did herself no favors. Certainly if she is angling for a VP slot this would be the wrong way to go about it.
A good day.
Unite, Democrats. McBu’ush cannot be permitted to proceed with the irreversible ruination of this country.
ct, click on my name
Ya think? Dean?
For McCain, I was thinking more rocking chair in Switzerland.
(CTuttle)))((
By way of disclosure: I’m not a fan of Hillary or Obama, but during the time since Edwards dropped out, my estimation of Hillary has declined, and Obama has turned out to be better than I expected.
IIRC, tonight Hillary did not say anything to the effect that Obama had won the primary and/or amassed the support of a majority of the delegates. The closest she came was to congratulate his campaign on its (unspecified) “accomplishments.” In normal circumstances, I’d call that the least gracious concession speech I’d ever heard. These aren’t normal circumstances.
As soon as Obama’s speeched was over, I called a very well conected friend, who had until a few minutes been on the phone with someone highly placed in the Clinton campaigh. (He has some friends who are very highly placed, but wouldn’t say about this one.)
According my friend, his contact said that the Clinton campaign has information on Obama, including videotapes, that they know that the Republicans have too, that if disclosed would make Obama absolutely unelectable.
I cried “bullshit.” He insisted on reserving judgement, mostly in deference to his friend. And that’s where it was left.
My only conclusion is that there are people reasonably highly placed in the Clinton campaign who believe this stuff, and that everything I saw from Clinton herself tonight is consistent with her believing such stuff and feeling she can exploit it to either the #1 or #2 position on Democratic ticket. But “consistent with” proves nothing — it only says that what we’ve seen hasn’t refuted that hypothesis.
For the time being, I put no credence in that hypothesis, and even if bad stuff is going to come out, at some point all loyal democrats, including the Clintons, must commit to the party’s nominee.
All Obama needs to do to win the election is remind people how long SOTU and other presidential addresses are.
he must have missed The Great Dictator.
i wanna see that mcsame rocking chair on trent lotts front porch
I fully support the Democratic slate fully, whomever they turn out to be (I’m a centrist independent).
You must be from NO if you say that. Ha!!!
why? on Earth, now?, are we still inflicted with TUCKS????? (Tucker? still on, well, Anywhere?)
(Originally known as anal sooth)
Can we find a McCain angle to that?
Suzanne…
Those shoes will be handy for you to walk on down to the post office!
Have you decided what you’ll do in terms of moving, Suz? Will you go be near your daughter?
Yeah, it’s something about the smile. It was especially striking in person.
Bit late in the day for Clinton to be using it now, assuming it exists. No longer does her any good.
Are you the Rama with a Sunday night radio show?
i gotta admit, i am sooo happy the primaries are over. i wanna focus on electing the D nominee and making sure that mcsame’s campaign goes down in flames.
oh, sorry. I read it again. we have a mccain angle.
I didn’t see it but it sounds that way. She was introduced as the next president. Tweety had to even say (in all seriousness) “I don’t think it was delusional.” Hardly a 5 star review. WTF is this woman doing? Barry just gotta go ahead. Stop putting 2 minutes of HRC ass kissing in every speech and go after McCain.
these wouldn’t be the infamous Michelle ‘whitey’ tapes?
I saw one pic of your back, while you were cutting the rug… and a bunch of your shoes and pedicure, which I did like the work… But, not one frontal shot of you in your outfit!
Some of us may really be that. My great grandfather was a Redbone from southwest Louisiana.
If such tapes existed, the Clinton campaign would have gotten them out already. How does your friend explain that they’ve been held? The Clintons play for keeps, and they would have seen to it that anything so damaging was released.
Besides, the “tapes” rumor has been pretty thoroughly debunked, today, at BooMan.
those shoes lasted through the ceremony and about halfway through the formal pictures. the entire reception was in my comfy slippers - otherwise there would have been no pictures of me dancing.
i’m been not allowed to wear heels for 5 years now - since the total knee replacement…
“According my friend, his contact said that the Clinton campaign has information on Obama, including videotapes, that they know that the Republicans have too, that if disclosed would make Obama absolutely unelectable.”
__________
LOL!
Right. Uh, they are saving this torpedo for precisely when?
Suz, your daughter is beautiful. And you look radiant!
LOL
I think it is until his contract runs out. He is a boil on the ass of humanity
could Hillary run for V.P. and resign after the election to become head of Health & Human Services?
A bit of dirty politics, but ya gotta look at who we’re playing against.
i’m in a group shot i posted - full frontal and shoes even show if ya look closely.
am expecting more pictures in - when i get em, i’ll post em.
We need to beat McCain very badly, and elect as many progressives to Congress as we can. It is vitally important to the future of our nation, and perhaps the planet.
Not a ral surprisse. Lots of folks ancestors were down with the swirl *g*
I think Clinton sent Obama a message tonight…
NOBODY is putting THIS woman in her place.
I think that Saturday’s corrupt fiasco at the RBC strengthened her resolve. That is what the whole “respect my voters” and “count ever vote” part of the speech was about — and she WILL take this fight to the convention if need be to make sure that HER voters are respected.
(Its funny how fauxgressive always complain about how weak and conciliatory the democratic leadership is — then when they actually get a candidate with a spine, they despise her….)
Hillary doesn’t need to leave — she’s already established her place in history, she’s already won more votes than Obama, she’s got a secure job, and she doesn’t need Obama.
And if she does wind up back in the senate, watch out. For seven years she did what she was told, stayed out of the limelight, worked inside the system, and that path got her nothing. She ran a relentlessly positive campaign, focussed on the ussues, and that was not enough for her colleagues — it was only when the chips were down, that she found her real voice, and now she’s been liberated. She owes no one anything — not the party, and certainly not Barack Obama.
Obama totally scrwed HIMSELF with his little power play on Saturday, because you do NOT treat Hillary Clinton like that. He desperately needed unity, and instead insisted up having his own way. His “show of strength” was really a sign of weakness — stealing delegates, and treating hispanic votoers, jewish voters, elderly voters, women voters as worthy of only 1/2 a vote is not the way to achieve unity.
So now, Obama is going to be subjected to assaults for the next three months by the right wing noise machine, while Hillary sits on the sidelines and tells everyone who asks that she’s still in the race because she’s the stronger candidate in November, and that’s she’s ready on Day One, and that the nomination will be decided at the convention.
And anyone who hasn’t figured out by now that you can’t force Hillary Clinton to do anything — and that she has withstood everything that has been thrown at her and she’s still standing - doesn’t understand how politics works.
So the Obama supporters should take full advantage of their faux-victory tonight, because its all gonna be downhill from here. Clinton’s voters are going to stick with her, and that is all that matters — because the longer HER voters compare her to Obama and McCain, the better off SHE is, and Obama gets the worst of it.
more snack
exactly! time is of the essence that we get progressive policies in place to protect our country from threats, both domestic and global.
Have to agree. They have pulled no punches so far in the campaign and cannot see why they would do so here. I think this is just more disinformation to try to keep the campaign alive.
SCROLL!!!!!!! Everybody!!!!! SCROLL!!!!!!!!
Exactly. My comment was that “That’s the shit that primaries are for.”
It wasn’t a concession speech. That is yet to come.
It’s funny that MSNBC only lets him on after midnite, when Dan Abrams and the jazzband come on….
And I love it when Rachel slaps him around. You know Rachel makes Tucker cross his legs as much as Hillary does.
{{{lukasiak}}}
care for more pie?
Yeah, let’s go medieval on his ass *g* grrrrrrrr
Kewl, I look forward to ‘em, I did see the group shot, I just wasn’t sure…! ;-)
CT- don’t know if this link will work….

I think his daddy still holds a few markers and keeps calling them in; but, surely, that’s run it’s course. The years of the bow-tie ate up a lot of street cred, even in the repug camps, “Carlson, your kid looks like Paul Simon fur crissake!”
power scroll!!!!!
*polite golf applause*
This reminds me nothing so much as that segment from the Clinton campaign film where Stephanopolis receives similar assertions and basicly calls Bulldada. Of course, in Bill’s case it was likely true…but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least that the Clinton campaign have been using this sort of stuff to try and influence the Super Delegates.
You certainly live in a pie-rich environment!
On Memorial weekend I saw a clip of McCain “campaigning” He shook the hands of a few old people and then there was a scene walking up to some old veterans. Then they immediately played the same pathetic 10 second clip again! A cable news channel couldn’t come up with more than that? And they probably couldn’t.
*spew*
Will ya give it a rest already…?
teehee
I think you’re right. It’s bullshit. i also agree with those who say we would have seen ity by now. It’s Obama’s nomination. His election to win or lose.
what nobody’s talking about is this: if the D’s lose HRG & BO go back to the Senate. If HRC does anything which arguabnly costs BO the lecetion, how do you think he colleagues will reward her? Elect her majority leader? Doubtful. I’m really tired of hearing about her at this point. She lost and better not overplay her hand — if she hasn’t alreday.
((CTuttle))
Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear this.
boa noite rosalind
.
for the same reason that the Clinton campaign had the Wright tapes and never used them — that’s not how she operates. She runs a clean campaign.
Oh, and BTW, the Michele tapes supposedly were dug up by a losing GOP candidate — I’d not be surprised to find out that the Clinton campaign had copies, but she would never use them.
mmmm pie
