But this came not out of the mouth of some random person, but of the most powerful vice president in the nation’s history — a man whose prodding sent this nation to an occupation of choice in Iraq, where many of West Virginia’s sons and daughters have and continue to risk life and limb in our nation’s uniform.
And it’s indicative of the wider disrespect that the Bush/Cheney Administration has for anything they can use or manipulate to their own ends.
For four years out of the last eight, the Bush/Cheney Administration has used West Virginia as it’s homespun, patriotic backdrop for a staged Fourth of July with the troops PR maneuver. It’s a gorgeous state — one with beautiful green vistas, and highly patriotic citizens who wave flags for the office of the president if not for the current occupant, and who have been taught to be polite by their mommas — and George Bush has come here to get his "worship me" jollies without having to face too much public dissent (when it wasn’t dragged out of the public speech venue in handcuffs before he could see it anyway).
But, as with everything else in the Bush/Cheney Administration, West Virginians were props used for votes and power consolidation and useful backdrop material. Since they no longer need our votes, the facade of giving a crap has been dropped.
WV’s lawmakers didn’t find it all that amusing — and I thought Rep. Nick Rahall hit this square:
"We may owe the vice president a debt of gratitude for yet another great West Virginia slogan: Dick Cheney is not from here," Rahall told us.
Indeed. Praise be.
Underneath it all, to Dick Cheney, all of this sacrifice, hard work and manners? It’s a joke. WV is a joke to him. Most Americans are a joke to him – just pawns to be moved around on the chessboard of his own making and control, consequences to individuals be damned unless they are his cronies. The deaths and the heartache and injuries that West Virginia’s young men and women, and their families, have endured on orders in which he had a very strong hand in shaping? A joke.
The rule of law which he’s been so quick to violate? A joke.
The tradition of not using intelligence and national security secrets as political pawns with selective release of information to the public? A joke.
Separation of powers and checks and balances? A joke.
The Constitution and his subordinate role to the President and Congress? A joke.
Personally, I could give a rat’s ass about what Dick Cheney thinks about me or my state — his behavior and actions while in office disqualify him from people about whose opinions I care, and whose respect I would rather not have, thank you. But, having sent a joke our way, good manners dictate a return in kind, I suppose. Here’s one for you, Mr. Vice President, for what you and your cronies have done to my nation the last few years: the Cheney ranch — where the men pretend to be men, the hunts are canned, the laws and the rules don’t apply and the sheep are nervous. Go Cheney yourself.
At least he didn’t shoot anyone else in the face this time (that we know of, anyway…).

. . .had a feelin’ we were gonna hear from a certain West Virginian on this.
oh and mad props to Representative Rahall – me likey!
“Open mouth, insert ass”
“…rat’s ass…”
Got it! *g*
I had the opportunity to drive through WV last Fall. I am envious of the beauty that surrounds you.
Seriously, would this woman get off her ass and let’s Impeach this miserable joke of a human being?
Impeach him and then ship him to Iraq where they can try him for murdering over one million Iraqis?
Can we do that and reclaim our status as a law abiding nation?
Democrats? Miss Nancy? Presumptive nominee?
Hi Redd!
Hoo boy! NOW he’s done it. Sic ‘im!
On a more serious note, besides feeling bald-faced anger at the nasty veep, I went from that to fury after hearing Byrd was in the hospital. That dear, dedicated man. Could you have an update for us some time? The strain of dealing with all this idiocy has to be so very hard for him, even though his toughness is legendary by now.
Having both Kennedy and Byrd “down” at the same time is troubling indeed.
Morning all — it was like catnip, wasn’t it? Although I could care less what the man says, his attitude of not giving a crap about the lives his policies touch and destroy really needed a smack…
As far as I have heard, he was running a fever after a bit of an illness, and they were concerned about dehydration issues with it. At his age, you take that seriously — but I haven’t heard anything beyond that. If I do, will let folks know…
oh good…post is back…DARTH is a serious conteder for most ABBYnormal case of pumphead…all those operations clotted his brain….trouble is,whole countries followinhg a mad man
Channeling George Costanza’s mom, “Oh, HE’s an idiot altogether!”
among other things i better not print…
It is gorgeous here. I keep meaning to take my camera out and get some pix for you all for a PUAC some Saturday. Next time we are out for a hike with The Peanut, I’ll try to remember to bring the camera along…
YES it is! Yes, it IS, Adie.
uhm… a tad more…..handcuffs,leg chains…..graybar hotel…throw away ze key!!!!!!!
What was his dumb point anyway? That he’s so American, you can trace his roots back to the 1600’s? Who gives a shit? I never doubted his whiteness for a minute.
Thanks much.
((((((Senator Byrd))))))
((((((Senator Kennedy))))))
Is there any further word on Sen. Byrd?
Mornin’ Christy,
that would be 22 West Virginians killed in Iraq
214 wounded
and of course, this does not include those suffering from PTSD, or suicides now estimated at 18 per day nationally – pigs!
Never mind…. Asked question without realizing it had been asked previously… as you were…
Thank you Christy. I always get worried about Byrd. Can’t help but love him. I am praying that he and Senator Kennedy get to be here to see SOME restoration. I pray for restoration too, and have each and every time Bu$hCo trashed our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
*sigh*
Does add a new layer of meaning to the phrase “Cheney Youself!”, doesn’t it?
prolly slaughtered the buffalos, and native peoples
We actually have a higher rate than the national average on PTSD issues, because there aren’t a lot of available treatment facilities in rural areas, and so folks don’t get the early treatment that could help curtail symptoms that they really need. I linked something up above on that…
Meanwhile, in the get-em-the-hell-out-of-the-White-House endeavor, Barack Obama will be in my city tonight. Planning to park my body in line for another glimpse of the man who will make George W. Bush and Dick Cheney look even worse than they do now. Hard to imagine, I know. But stand by!
Christie, it is shameful that Cheney made that statement about your beautiful state. I was stunned when I heard it – such a terrible man.
understood. don’t apologize. we’re all just worried sick.
Yep – let’s all take a moment to send some high energy health thoughts to Sen. Byrd and Sen. Kennedy.
and called them terrorists while he did it.
I am so-o-o-o jealous! Enjoy. And don’t forget the camera. ;->
Well, like I said, it’s not really anything new. It’s just stunning when you compare it to all the smarmy false sucking-up they’ve sent him to do here with the NRA crowd. Asshat.
INDESCRIABLE,almost
One of your fellow residents responded with some good humor. That’s a good way to deal with such nonsense. And the comments section ended up being an open thread for jokes.
the amazing thing is that Cheney (and bush) are actually willing to say these things in public. “So” really is his motto …
I live in Virginia on the West Virginia border, and am very familiar with the put downs.
Cheney well have cost the Republicans West virginia, at the least, even if Cheney is tarred and feathered at the Repub convention, which is not likely. Hopefully this showing of true, if subconscious colors, by Cheney can be leveraged as a tire to hang around the neck of as many issues and candidates as possible, far and wide
Wow, finally someone people in West Virginia can hate more than Rich Rod!
Send him to the Hague. (Cheney, not Rich Rod)
and the audience laughed
Yep, I linked it up above in the first paragraph, I think…
Cheney probably won’t even be at the convention. He’ll be in his bunker deleting computer files and shredding papers.
Christy, out of respect to you, I watched the vid of big dick. Blergh.
Apparently, when McCain heard this joke, he spat up his Ensure.
If they are smart, they’ll keep him off camera as much as they possibly can. The problem for them is going to be managing Lynn Cheney’s ego — and her need for worshipful respect of her husband on camera and out loud. Which says to me that I’m awfully glad I’m not stage-managing the GOP image this year, and having to juggle Dick and George and their entourages. *g*
ARG!! Maybe I’m slow but I don’t see it…
I guess that would fall under the “silver lining” of such episodes…he shows his true feelings and thoughts and hopefully, that translates into voters waking up?
Richard Cheney has been in the business for at least the last several decades of putting America to work for his family, whether it is getting the company he was chairman of, Halliburton, way into the government trough, or getting his daughters jobs, or getting his son in law jobs. Every one of us, sad to say, not only puts some percentage of our tax dollars into the pockets of this smirking, patronizing, crazy a**hole, but into those of other family members. It drives me nuts.
It actually might be enjoyable (in a schadenfreudelicious way) to watch the Repug convention just to see how they dance around W and Shooter.
As residents of estranged Morgan County, near the butt end of the eastern panhandle, we can only wish to have Rahall as our representative in this matter.
and I plan on watching it on Fox in all it’s necrotic glory !
Cheney sounds like he could be a member of the Bush family. That’s their business model too.
Republicans still like them, don’t they? Not as much as they used to, but they still have approval ratings in the GOP polls.
so-o-o. Christy.
This is “bashcheneyday”! I heartily approve.
More please. whut dirt ya got on that odious lynne-doll? i got a handful of hatpins here…
Sen. Kennedy, bless his heart, came out of the moderate bit of anesthesia (they didn’t put him totally under, soas to be able to check effects as they operated – miracles of modern medicine!).
Among his 1st post-op words reportedly were, “I feel like a million bucks!”
Let’s keep up the bash-ash-howl theme to provide a lil’ amusement for him today. Hopefully will aid his recovery. ;->
Open mouth, insert ass….
That is pure Gold, I about rolled off my chair in laughter. That started my day off so well.
OT completely, but a nice change: I just got this Email from Eric Massa, who is running to unseat Randy “I don’t have to talk to anyone against the war” Kuhl out in the Corning, NY area. People who are down near and in the New YOrk City area might want to know about these support events:

Ooops — that’s because I screwed the link and pasted in a WaPo link twice. Glad you caught that because I meant that second one to be to John. I clearly need more coffee…
not to disrupt cheney bashing or mcsame hating, but i did love this quote from clinton in SD yesterday
i’m not really familiar w/ that old expression … must be a new york thing ;)
May you be right, because the thought of Cheney in my town for the convention is literally hurl-inducing. Truly. I think part of the rationale for having Obama here tonight at the Xcel Center for what might be the official launch of a one-candidate Dem campaign is that the Xcel Center is where the Bushlicans will convene their convention in September. Yes, we will be besieged with the boogers. They’ve also successfully lobbied St. Paul to keep bars open until 4:00 a.m. (!), so we’ll be besieged with a passel of drunk and hung-over Bushlicans.
i understand when any of them leave the vice presidentialo compound 12 humogous black general motors SUV are in escort…those DNAchallenged CHENYS are HIGH MAINTENANCE…vile swine
I read somewhere that Senator Byrd soundly denounced Chin-ee’s comment … that old goose is too tough to be slowed down by some virus …
there’s already a watertiger post upstairs -
Yes indeedy! He’s not just plain mean and nasty. He’s so blind-arrogant it makes him flat-out stoopid!
go ahead dead-eyes, make my day!?! my cat has more common sense, compassion, and dignity than the veeper.
off with ‘is hague! huzzah!
Unfortunately, the news does not wait for mocking. *G* Plus, it’s some video of a Donna Edwards speech…
Donna Edwards at the SEIU, livestream set up upstairs, watertigers there
he rescued Haliburton FOR the Bush family

And Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) said, “That a man who has ascended to the seat of vice president of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans. Now that he or the administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia.”
Byrd did, indeed — here’s his statement, courtesy of the Charleston Gazette:
“That a man who has ascended to the seat of vice president of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans,” said Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va. “Now that he or the administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia.
“This pitiful comment is not entirely surprising when you consider the source,” Byrd said. “Vice President Cheney’s words reflect the attitude of an administration and a party that says what they must to get elected and then turns their backs on those they promised to represent.”
Cheney’s thoughtless gaff is all of a piece w/his general attitude of disrespect for those he considers somehow insignificant or “fair game.” A relative of mine was present @ the Auschwitz liberation ceremony in ‘05. The general reaction there to Dick’s chosen attire & he & his wife’s attitude (though more muted than to yesterday’s ass-in-mouth) was disbelief, then disgust, then anger:
Dick Cheney, Dressing Down
“At yesterday’s gathering of world leaders in southern Poland to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the United States was represented by Vice President Cheney. The ceremony at the Nazi death camp was outdoors, so those in attendance, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, were wearing dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. Because it was cold and snowing, they were also wearing gentlemen’s hats. In short, they were dressed for the inclement weather as well as the sobriety and dignity of the event.
The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower.”

Talking about PTSD:
I’m just glad it doesn’t mean I clearly need less alcohol.
You and cbl2 are lightning fast, I was halfway through scrolling DK and you’d already put this up …
I can imagine “So?” ornately carved in marble and crowning the Cheney family mausoleum.
Along that line–I wonder about the fireworks each July…whether they also trigger those with PTSD?
Oh lordy, I remember that — he looked like he had gone on a photo safari to get pictures of penguins. It was hacktastic.
I can imagine “So?” ornately carved in marble and crowning the Cheney
family mausoleum.headboard.… cleaned that up for ya … *g*
Does the Bush family slime never STOP? Prescott Bush/Brown Bros. Harriman/Hitler…to the oil equipment company funded by Brown Bros. Harriman…to George W. Bush to Zapata Oil(and the CIA)..to Georgie? The Slime Trail goes back and back and back..no wonder Dick saved that company for the Bushes..and no wonder he was found to be such a great partner for the ‘idiot child’ in terms of running for president. Payback, anyone?
Totally agree, Christy. I agree with the ” go chee-knee yourself” absolutely. ’specially after visiting my ol’ friend in the VA hospital who’s dealing with foot amputation ’cause he served and got Agent-Oranged while Chee-knee had other priorities and Fly-boy was AWOL in Ala.
Left a rejoinder for ya, Norske, if you’re here, at the end of Attaturk’s thread.
and look what the clueless git wore at Coast Guard graduation ceremony
hehehehe
just got thru this and all the links.
A Pissed Christy IS a thing to behold, a thing of beauty, is it not?!
Thank you for your patriotism, Christy.
Let us all be sure to DIGG this one?????

Worst. Vice. President. Ever.
Uncle Jonathon has also helped Al Qaeda. The Riggs Bank laundered Saudi petro dollars, that were used to finance the 9-11 attacks. Other neo-cons, at Riggs are also Western Al Qaeda, including the Allbritons who run politico.com.
s’okay, the klown wore a cowboy hat to a Coast Guard ceremony
Not only does Cheney suffer James Watt’s foot-in-mouth disease, but also Tiger Woods. When asked, during a conference call about the PGA Championship to take place in a Detroit suburb next August, who he thought was going to win the Stanley Cup, he replied: “No one watches hockey, let’s talk about the Dodgers.”
Only a few of us, alas, disagree with the received view that Tiger is a golf god.
Someone upstream mentioned W and Shooter at the convention…I can see the Rethugs keeping Cheney locked away, but how do they avoid W in primetime? And the photo ops when McCain (I like to call him, affectionately, “whitey”) officially gets the nomination? I just don’t see how they hide Bush then. Maybe they’ll hug…again.
O/T, Christy—
I was wondering why there were so many farm fields here where I am without crops this year, when we supposedly have a world food crisis going on?
I asked around, and apparently the FEd still has the program in place that asks farmers to set aside a certain amount of acreage to boost prices.
Can you research this and make some sense of it?
The Dick hath no sense of decorum (& doesn’t see the need for any), except perhaps when he visits his buds the Saudis. I have it from an eyewitness @ the ‘05 Auschwitz ceremony that Lovely Lynne also doesn’t much care about decorum, or for that matter, displaying basic manners/courtesy in public.
Shocking, I know…
Is it January yet? SIGH
Bush provide aid and comfort to Al Qaeda and the Saudis? The impeachment trial should logically lead to charges of treason.
Farm policy isn’t really my cuppa tea, but I will see what I can find out for you on this…I’ll ask around. I know they left the bulk of the subsidies in place the last time the farm bill went through, as I recall, but what changes may be in store for this year, I can’t say off the top of my head. Will seee what I can dig up on this…
THe Bush family has always looked after its cronies. That is, after all, the family business.
Thank you kindly.
Tristero at digby, must reading today: people were scared.
CHS:
I suspect WV’s contributions to the armed forces, and its casualites, are disproportionately high.
Which is one of the things that makes Cheney’s comments genuinely offensive.
Sending prayers for Senator Byrd.
As for Cheney, unfortunately he’ll never pay for his crimes. Karma is a bitch though.
http://www.iht.com/articles/20…..nserve.php
“Thousands of farmers are pulling their fields out of the government’s biggest conservation program, spurning guaranteed annual payments for a chance to cash in on the boom in wheat, soybeans, corn and other crops. Last fall, they took back as many acres as are in Rhode Island and Delaware combined.”
The retirement funds being recklessly invested in highly speculative commodities index funds are creating economic distortions and ecosystem disturbances in agriculture and land use.
test post? errors galore with posts…
Thanks for the link, Toby.
I guess it’s the same program, although the fields I see are regular ground–they’re not wetlands or treed for the wildlife, so I don’t see them as taking away from the environment (chemicals notwithstanding). Of course, I’d like to see the fields with organically grown crops.
I just don’t like what I’m seeing/hearing about Monsanto using the “food crisis” as a way to force poorer people, such as sub-Saharan Africa, to buy their frankencrop GMO’s.
According to the BBC, the reporter practically gushed at how Monsanto GMO’s are the answer to the problem in Africa, not mentioning any of the adverse effects that would come from the crops if they were allowed a foothold.
That’s where my concern lies…
We’re already working on it — thanks for the heads up, though.
((((chs))))
Cheney was not even human enough to apologize for what he said, but instead sent out an employee to do the apologizing for him. Reminds me of having the guy he shot in the face come out and apologize for getting in the way of Cheney’s birdshot.
Monsters rule America today. Not demons, mind you, monsters…
