The other day, doing the family grocery-shopping thing, I went to buy some salmon (wild caught, of course — I never eat farmed salmon) and couldn’t. Not that it was unavailable. It was that the cheapest I could find cost $26 a freaking pound. The good stuff, the chinook, was selling for $40.
For a family on an ordinary budget, accustomed to buying their salmon at between $6 and $16 a pound, that’s just unaffordable. I bought beef instead.
We know the direct cause of this: the collapse of the California/Oregon salmon fishery. But what caused that?
Why, Republicans, of course.
The collapse of these fisheries is mostly the product of the decisions by the Bush administration back in 2001-2003 to ignore federal law and shut off Klamath River Basin water downstream so that Oregon farmers — who were being backed by a witches’ brew of militia/Patriot movement paranoiacs and Republican property-rights types — could have the water for themselves. The result was the largest salmon kill in American history.
And it all happened because of machinations in which Dick Cheney himself was intimately involved. Cheney is a "fisherman" the same way he’s a hunter (I for one would not stand near the guy with a fly rod in his hand because I know I’d catch one of his flies in my face): he depends on privately supplied stocks. For the rest of us, well, go catch what you can after he’s done shooting the salmon in the face.
Cheney, as I discussed here, embroiled a host of other Republicans in this fiasco as well — most notably Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith, who even as recently as a couple of years ago was defending the decisions leading up to the salmon kill:
[Smith said] he doesn’t regret helping restore water to Klamath Basin farmers in 2002, despite the massive salmon die-off that followed on the Klamath River. In fact, Smith questions whether the diversion to farmers was the cause of the fish kills — a position severely at odds with environmentalists and one that is likely to keep the issue alive politically. Smith said in an interview with the editorial board of The Eugene Register-Guard that he thought the die-off was more likely a result of disease and said: "I am not here to make any apologies. I am proud to fight for the farmers or any group of Americans whom the federal government says has no standing, no water. I just find that offensive."
Last week the DSCC noted that Smith’s negative-ad attacks on his Democratic opponent, Jeff Merkley, just weren’t working. You can’t help but think that no small part of that has to do with the folks out grocery shopping for their salmon — and putting two and two together.
Republicans are not just busting federal budgets, they’re killing Americans budgetarily at home too — both at the gas pump and the grocery store. And that, more than anything, may have to do with why the Republican brand has such a bad smell about it these days.

Idiots like Smith seem to think that every decision they make or support happens in a vacuum and that no one is able to figure out how the dots connect.
The Eugene Register Guard- one of the best newspapers in the USA.
Hope November sees Smith’s political career rotting on the rocks.
Well, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who has noticed that smell…

Dick Cheney shot a fish in the face.
Since they’ve shut down the salmon fishing I guess all those fishermen can get jobs at Burger King or something. They have put an entire industry out of business.
Another relevant fact that is often overlooked in this debate is the effect of clear-cutting timber adjacent to salmon runs. After the clear cuts, erosion fills the small streams that are tributaries to these rivers with silt. Thus the combination of reduced river flow downstream and choking of small streams in the mountains upstream that feed these rivers is fatal to the salmon. Oregon had arrived at a virtual moratorium on clear cutting to be replaced with managed harvesting through great debate and compromise between farmers, fishermen and big forestry (see Weyerhauser)- but that was done away with not only by the Bush administration’s “Healthy Forests” initiative, but also from executive order that overrode the Oregon legislature.
(((Quaker girl)))
I grew up in Oregon- the salmon were still plentiful then- it didn’t occur to us that they could go away- but they have.
The population has been in decline for many years.

This supports the thesis that I outlined above.
There has been an almost heroic effort in my community to restore the habitat of the salmon spawning in our creeks. This area (West Marin County) is one of the most important areas for salmon in central/northern California. May I add that we are a cozy little bubble of liberalism in an otherwise evil, earth-raping sea of republicans in this country?
By the way, the post about fatherhood from 2007 that you linked to your post yesterday was lovely.
I can not get Orcinus to load with either FF or IE. Anybody else denied?

Dave, good post over at your place yesterday
dunno, quite reading there cause of the clinton pieces.
The post actually loaded once for a split second, then was covered with a google “502 server error” screen…
WTH is a 502?
There are a LOT of factors I suspect. Many fisherman blame the seals.
Salmon should have hired a lobbyist /s

Yeah, in “sharkskin” suits.
Kill the seals! Kill the seals!!
It must be me, I get the same error when I try to go to your blog.
I so hope Gordon Smith is suddenly unemployed come November, I just wish DeFazio had run against him.
I have to admit, I haven’t checked the prices on salmon lately, mostly because I haven’t been able to afford it more than once a year at best. It’s something that when I do have it, I give thanks for it.
hmm well we have a crap load of sea lions in CA too. Not to mention pelicans and other sea life. I suppose they are to be blamed for practicing that old eco-cycle thing. How dare they horn in on OUR food supply. Nevermind that it was their food supply first. Times are a changing.
ted stevens must have his head stuck in the blogger.com tube
Great post again, David! But I’ve got a flash: we ain’t seen nothing yet! We’ve only just begun to feel the full impact of the sub-prime lending debacle. Some research I’ve done just the past few days revealed to me that the period of 2004-2006 sent sub-prime lending skyrocketing. Most of the loans were ARMs with a first change coming due in 3-5 years. That would put a lot of new foreclosures coming up in 2007-2011 or 2012 or so. We better hope that whoever gets elected has the expertise to deal with this problem adequately or we’re in seriously big trouble. So far as I can see, our state, which started out with a huge surplus just a very few years ago, is now in the red by $1.2B. The cause has been attributed to the sub-prime lending/collapse of the real estate market and values, causing unemployment to soar, etc. Between this problem, gas prices, raises in food costs for all sorts of reasons, inflationary pressures, etc., we’re in for a very bumpy next few years if you ask me.
We do salmon once in a while but it has always only been the wild variety and never that farmed crap.
In the case of salmon this is a very simple problem but with many contributing factors. The basic problem is ththe salmon need to swim from the ocean upstream to their spawning grounds, so the primary factor is access to these spawning grounds. The contributing factors are:
1. Climate change – warmer, dryer = lower water levels
2. Dams – obstacles to swimming upstream
3. Deforestation – erosion causes lower water levels and reduces water quality
4. Water diversion for irrigation – lower water levels downstream
5. overfishing – smaller, less genetically diverse and more vulnerable salmon populations
The “extraction industries”: commercial fishing, commercial farming and lumber industries are all at fault and have the GOP in their pockets.
Thanks David for the Post. when the water was diverted to southern Oregon I knew that the Salmon population would be threatened, but little did I know just how much it would affect the whole Salmon population on the whole West Coast and just how much money it would cost in terms of jobs and livelihood of Oh so many people!
Here is a Digg for the post… so all you good Pups get busy and Digg this post for David!
Just heard an MSNBC breaking news that Bill Clinton has said “this may be the last day I’m involved in this kind of campaign….”
What is this?
A threat?
Hmmm, Salmon stocks in decline as are Bees, who facilitate the majority of fruits and veggies … sounds like the work of the fanatical “
HaveEat A Cow, Man !” Lobby …Freakin Ted Stevens…
So much for rallying around the nominee…
Might I suggest Trout, Perch, Halibut or Tilapia … not that I would know, bein’ a vegetabletarian an’ all …
Vilsak is now telling Hillary to give it up.
I just saw that too. I had a bit of a scooby-doo moment. While that would disappoint me, i’m not truly that surprised.
Looks as if the fishing industry let the Goopers slip OUT of their pockets–no?
The habitat here has been damaged from soil erosion and man made obstacles , etc. due to development along the creek. People living along the creek also sometimes try to clean up their property and wind up moving woody debris that is vital habitat for the salmon.
It’s not a truck!
OT – Anybody catch McCain’s double-whore act this morning?
Keynote speaker at the AIPAC convention (I particularly liked the little sign around his neck that said “Hey, I’m firmly in your hip pocket. P.S. I need MONEY!!). He then completed the double-whore by explaining why the war in Iraq is so swell, and that we *must*, must, I tell ya, stay the course.
And according to McShame, Barack Obama is a fuckin’ idiot.
A good morning’s work, all in all.
I kinda figured “the farmed crap” was gonna be the only fish safe to eat soon…
What is wrong with the farmed fish?
Well I’m vegan but the brit likes cod (fish and chips) hates trout and perch but likes Tilapia, Sole and Halibut. He’ll survive *g*
Thanks for posting this important information. Anyone living along a creek where salmon spawn can use it.
I live on the American River. This year there was no salmon run. Rather, it was down by 90%. I feel that much of what is going on is part of the race to garner water rights. The river was totally mismanaged this year. The levels would drop a foot in ten minutes. This really messes with the fish swim bladder. And the adults were hanging right outside of the American and Sac Rivers because the temperature was two degrees too high. The temperature is regulated at the dam.
Powerful elitists want the water. Want the water? Kill the fish first.

In the Northwest, there are still plenty of “Bottom Fish”– Sea Bass, Ling Cod, and Flounder….
You can take yer boat out and catch em yourself…pretty good eating.
A similar crock is trundled out as an excuse for killing marine mammals on the Columbia River. Salmon habitat upstream was destroyed by dams – especially on the Snake – built by the same species now blaming marine mammals for decimating salmon runs.
Oddly enough, for a species that uses a lot of tools, humans seem to have great difficulty using mirrors.
Was there a cloud floating by that he shook his fist at as well? He is going to beat this poor dead horse and is either too stubborn or silly to realize that this is NOT a winning issue for him. Oh wait..it’s that old if-you-keep-saying-it-it-will-become-true thing.
I agree, when they realized that the DFH enviro’s were talking about their livelihoods they did an about face in their political support and are being punished for it. No fishing industry – no fishing industry lobby.
Not all wild salmon are in that price category. The pricey version is the Copper River salmon,(unless you live in Alaska, in which case you simply fish for them) and they always were well above the others. Nonetheless,it’s all way over the top.
Columbia River salmon are also wild, but given the condition of the Columbia, I’d rather eat the farm version.
I don’t eat either.

yep. me, too.
Why’d he do that
Yeah the dams have made difference, but I’m not aware of any being built LATELY—–are there NEW dams on the Snake?
Oh dear. I know he was a contributor here but dude (Larry Johnson) has some serious issues to work out.
Peeps better develop (ugh) a taste for catfish.
Columbia River salmon don’t LIVE in the Columbia- they just use it as a waterway to get to the small streams where they spawn- and die..
Is this petulant pissiness ’cause the coronation’s na ga ha’pn? Not to mention the Elvis convention entry?
and re Larry Johnson…I’m thinkin’ a variation of the idea I posted in the Gilly thread re a blogosphere award of the best of the best… Gilly for blogger “heroes”; Molly for old media “heroes” and [fill in the blank] for the scoundrels.
*shudder* My grandmother tried to get me to eat tongue as a child but I told her that I didn’t want to taste anything that could taste me back *g*.
I’ve had steak and kidney pie. It was actually quite tasty (with a pint). Good thing that there are a few british pubs here where he can delight himself in those things that you will NEVER find in my house (mushy peas-gag)
No: the loggers and ORV enthusiasts and welfare farmers have been busy finishing off much of what salmon habitat remained after the dams went up.
He is like those Dems that did not vote for Gore because he was “not perfect” … we’re heading for that in November unless all the Dems come together and fight as one, like the Repugs do …
Has anyone heard anything about her? Just wishing her well!
Normally I’d tell you to go read the link, but blogger seems broken today so I’ll give you the quick upshot of the post:
– Farmed salmon are not just bad tasting with a crappy texture, they’re laden with a variety of chemicals: antibiotics (they have more antibiotic pound for pound than any flesh you can buy on the market) and hormones, not to mention the nice dye they feed them. You see, if you were to eat these fish without the dye, they’d be a nice murky gray color. Fish flesh reflects the diet; wild fish eat krill and shrimp, while the farmed ones eat milled crap.
– They are horrible for the native ecosystems in which they are farmed. Thanks to sea lice and escapage, the Atlantic salmon farms here on the Pacific Coast are destroying native stocks in their native habitat. And in the process, they destroy habitat for 137 other species that depend on those native stocks — most notably killer whales.

My Quebec friends are forever scarred with the memories of cold Peas on Toast for Breakfast, even in the winter … *double shudder* …
It’s a shame really. To have so much hate for someone you don’t even know. What a waste of energy. But to go and make stuff up about them (lie) seems symptomatic of some mental /emotional issues.
ND’s Lake Sakajawea has excellent, if inauthentic *g* salmon fishing.
And the Monterey Bay aquarium has a safe fish eating list at their website, I think.
Excellent post, David.
And timely breaking news re Bubba may be showin’ fish can rot from the head down on both sides, so it behooves us all to keep on fishin’ for a lifetime.
It’s actually delicious… I’ve loved it since I was a kid. (Of course, you couldn’t pay me to eat fish… makes me gag.)
that sounds like the old Army stand-by – SOS (sh*t on a shingle)
Salmon and other fish farms also have regular outbreaks of viruses, which infest the nearby waterways as well.
I think Kirk did a write up on this a while back …
No one is perfect. If there is one thing we can say truthfully about mankind is that they will disappoint every and all the time.
This is not about a campaign or candidate, it’s about the party and our ability to get a dem in the WH come November. If they are not going to help, please step aside and don’t hinder.
I haven’t heard a word but I still send her love across the toobz
Like all republicna endeavors, Fish farming is an ecological disaster. Concentrations of fecal matter in confined fish pens, etc. Like ethanol production – the end product costs more in energy and resources (fish food pellets) than its net value. Many more pounds of fish food are used compared to the pounds of salmon flesh produced. Maybe some genetic engineering, hormone therapy or other chemicals can improve the numbers. /s
I don’t know. He had been a pretty effective advocate during the Wilson matter and then took up advocacy for Sen. Clinton. But that advocacy quickly went off the rails in my book.
Too bad, I liked the site for quite a while, but it became just too much once the anti-Obama rhetoric became incendiary.
Read Booman’s link.

I wouldn’t eat it. No matter how she tired to hide it or beg me to try it. I’m a vegan now so I have an excuse *g*
I wish we knew someone who knows her in real life.
A lot can happen in 5 months and a lot had better happen to bring them around or McCain will win another Diebold Squeaker …
Facing reality?
If you’re eating them by the time they return to the Columbia, you probably don’t want to. The flesh of spawners is mushy and not very good, at least once they’ve spent any time in the fresh water.
But most of the Columbia salmon you might be able to eat have just spent the previous 5-7 years out in the Pacific, not in the Columbia.
Thanks for rembering – but I cited (and learned from) David’s posts on Orcinius. I wish blogger would let us have at ‘em (the posts, not the sea lice…)
They thought of genetically modifying the Fish to live on land but shot down the idea due to lack of evidence … /s
wow. That is horribly sad. Why would someone go out of their way to smear someone’s character like that? Why go after Michelle? are the kids next? Is he going to spy to see if they have any white dolls and if not show that as proof of ‘whitey’ hatred?
someone needs an intervention
and any news?
Might be a good idea. They could brainwash the mutated fish to vote republican.
oops misread your post, Fern
Sigh…me too
me too…hi everybody how are ya all???????
Hence my focus on voter registration. The whole voting system is messed up but it makes it harder to steal if the election isn’t close.
I think that was the post where I mentioned RFK jr.’s talk about the amount of toxins in his body due to fish contamination … that if he was a child bearing woman, his baby would have 100% chance of being handicapped …
((sadly))
I wonder when the Dems will realize that attacking each other benefits the Repugs more than either of the Dem sides ?
I tried and got into your blog without any problem at all!
Hi!
you are such a rare gem!!!!!!
so the fake tape has been given to Fox. Wonder when they will air it? The last primaries are tomorrow.
the ‘God Hates Salmon’ party.
Thanks. It’s working again.
For easy reference purposes, here’s what I wrote back in 2005:
Canning our salmon
Saturday, June 11, 2005
A few years ago, then-Congresswoman Helen Chenoweth (R-Idaho) made headlines when she dismissed salmon-recovery efforts by saying: “How can salmon be endangered when you can buy them in cans in supermarkets?”
The Bush administration, it appears, is intent on making just that kind of wingnut vision into our all-too-stark reality.
The P-I’s sterling environment reporter, Robert McClure, reported the other day that the Bush administration plans to massively expand salmon farming in offshore waters of the Pacific:
Calling fish farming a potential boon for consumers and the economy, the Bush administration yesterday proposed to massively expand the practice to waters as far as 200 miles offshore.
Supporters in Washington, including a state senator who advocates for fish farmers, urged Congress to bless the idea. They said a likely result — if fish-culturing methods can be perfected — would be a cheap source of ocean-grown delights, such as black cod, in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Critics answered that the aquaculture build-up is a get-rich-quick scheme destined to leave taxpayers subsidizing an industry that would pollute the ocean, serve up substandard fish and, ultimately, center its economic activity in Third World nations.
It’s important to take note of what environmentalists are saying, because it’s entirely accurate — and, if anything, understated:
Environmentalists and commercial fishermen say the legislation is too broad and gives the Department of Commerce, the parent agency of the Fisheries Service, total discretion on environmental regulations.
“Any time you have a confined feedlot operation, you’re going to have disease and pathogens and parasites, so you’re always medicating for your weakest animal — whereas in nature, that animal would die and become part of the food chain,” said Anne Mosness, a Bellingham-based crusader for the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, a national research and advocacy group.
“It’s the equivalent of having a hog farm in a city park flushing its wastes into the street,” she said.
Mosness, who fished for salmon in Alaska for 28 years, worries that producing enough salmon in fish farms will give politicians an excuse to discontinue environmental-protection efforts designed to make Northwest rivers more welcoming to salmon.
In essence, the presence of gigantic fish farms will supposedly relieve pressure to ensure the survival of wild salmon stocks, as a federal judge just ordered the administration to do. (No doubt he was merely an “activist” judge.)
So now Americans won’t have to worry about endangered salmon. Hey, they can get it right from the can!
Er, well, and pay no mind to what you’re getting in that can.
Most of you probably already know that when you buy farmed salmon, that nice “pink” color is faked. It would be naturally grey except for the dye they feed the fish:
Another difference in farmed salmon: their flesh would be light grey if they weren’t fed ad additive to give them their salmon colour. Farmers can pick the colour they want their fish to be from a ‘SalmoFan,’ something that resemble a collection of paint chips.
And, when it comes to eating them, farmed salmon have notably higher levels of toxins contained in their meat. Oh, and did we mention that they’re high in delicious and nutritious PCBs too? In addition, the live fish are constantly fed a chemical diet of antibiotics (more per pound, in fact, than any other kind of livestock).
As it happens, those antibiotics are spread openly to the open sea, since some 75 percent of it, spread into the pens, actually escapes. This introduces into the wild marine environment new strains of resistant diseases that can devastate whole populations, both farmed and wild.
That’s not all they’re spreading into the wild. The salmon pens are also spreading sea lice and other diseases to wild salmon.
And then there are the farmed salmon themselves, which often escape, usually in larger numbers than the industry will admit. These are Atlantic salmon, an alien species. They are also notoriously aggressive toward the salmonids of other species — that is, they selectively pursue and eat them. (This is probably why, in the Atlantic, there is only one species of salmon, compared to the five species that naturally prowl the Pacific.) And, in the wild, these Atlantic salmon have begun to breed and displace the wild Pacific salmon stocks.
Worst of all, the salmon farms are driving traditional fishermen out of business — and destroying native salmon stocks.
It’s looking as if it’s only a matter of time before you won’t be able to buy wild salmon in the stores anymore, for anything other than exorbitant prices (see, for a preview of this, the ridiculous gouging that now occurs for Copper River salmon). And all those jobs that used to hum out of the Fishermen’s Terminal just a couple of miles from my home — especially the North Pacific fleet — will be gone, replaced by a relative handful of jobs running the cages at offshore farms.
Once upon a time, conservatives were supposed to be about preserving our traditions. The bottom line now is profits, at the expense of everything else. Not least, at the expense of our natural environment and our health.
__
And here is a followup post about sea lice.
It’s a case of, ‘i’m taking my ball and going home’ i don’t know but some of these folks call themselves feminist but if they are going to back McCain (roe vs Wade, no support for fair/equal pay bill, etc.) no way in hell are they feminist.
*g*
BTW- Ted Kennedy is at Duke U. Med Ctr for 6 hours of brain surgery today.
hi guy,loving your grandson pics
I live right next to the Columbia river and I can tell you the Fish and Game from Oregon and Washington have their head up their asses.
I must get twenty damn updated notices a week from the Washington dept. O fish and Wildlife.
They put out a fishing synopsis in May every year and that fucker is obsolete before it hits the shelves.
They (Salmon) need to hire a lobbyist firm pronto.
Thanks. Kid is da Bomb.
Best line I’ve read all day.
Yeah, ruining our private budgets has got our attention all right.
deliberate and willful incompetence for the worst. president. ever. his appointees and policies were supposed to trash everything we hold dear. 1.20.09
That sounds pretty fishy to me.
People say a lot of illogical things when they’re upset … given time to calm down, they will vote for Obama.
I’m sure Hillary and her people will campaign vociferously for BO.
Yeah but it’s like swimming upstream with this adminitration.
these despickable grossly overpaid win at all costs Clinton thugs McAuliff etc, have added JET FUEL to the fire..they need to be run out of the party, and i would rather GROW BALLS,then follow these so called feminists..they are justsorry payhetic mean spirited SPOILERS for the rest of us imo
a new poster isupstairs with reconciliation.
I believe the real contest forpresident is between hrc and obama. thats why people forget it’s a primary.
I read some rants at a rabid HRC blog wherein older women where saying basically “fuck Roe v Wade and SCOTUS, my ovaries are shriveled by now, it doesn’t matter to me.’
“ME.” Me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me me…
Y’know, Roe will neither impact me directly, but here’s what I’ve written.
Neither will the worst planetary decimation brought on by unrestrained global warming impact me – I’m 62.
This “me” shit is so lame.
I don’t understand the whole pissed off older woman argument (does notmean I’m dismissing it) and how the blame is laid at the feet of the other campaign. It is truly mind bloggling. They say that it is the media that has been so sexist but then transfer their anger to the other dem. They then say that they have seen too many women being passed over in favor of unqualified (insert your descriptor here)men. But so far none that Ihave talked to has been able to substantiate what ‘practical experience’ senator Clinton has that makes her a more qualified candidate.
I change the channel these days when I see Larry on TV. He’s been on Dan Abrams new Verdict show a lot. I used to like Larry, but he and the Wilsons are so much supporters of Hillary, who I have a hard time even watching lately, that I no longer am a fan of them like I used to be.
Just to make sure the record is straight, my problems with Hillary started because of some policy decisions she made, i.e.: the AUMF signing and the Flag-burning support. But it’s grown as I saw her doing anything, including lie, cheat, steal, smear to win. She actually acted so badly that she was willing to denigrate the Dem and hold the Rethug in higher esteem, so I lost all respect for her at that point.
I don’t take away from their disappointment but i don’t understand the target of their anger
It is racism, dressed differently …
I hear you. And I am disappointed as well. Cheryl and I caucused for Hillary here, as I’ve noted before. Her subsequent actions pushed me into a net marginal Obama position. There is in fact a far greater good imperative exigent here, that goes way beyond “me.”
exactly my sentiments and her choices for insiders leave alot to be desired imo…and KYL/LIEBERMAN nuff said
too angry WAY TOO partisan
I’m 63 and should be part of Hillary’s base, but I don’t support her due to her actions! I know what you mean about all that “me, me, me” crap! I would love to be able to vote for the first woman President, but part of feminism is the right not to vote for someone just because she’s a woman. I think that’s very foolish! Nor will I vote against her just because she’s a woman, although I know that some folks will. That equally objectionable. I just think, on the issues, she’s way too far wrong to earn my vote.
Yes, I think all of them are!
Again, unfortunate initials.
An excellent candidate for a book review hosted by Dave: The Gods that Failed: How Blind Faith in Markets Has Cost Us Our Future, by Larry Elliott and Dan Atkinson (Bodley Head, 2008). Its views seem consistent with Paul Krugman’s and its language is right out of FDL. It’s being excerpted in three parts in the Guardian. From Part One:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/busi…..lrecession
Hi David. For what it’s worth I made the same grocey store/gas station argument over here. I called it the Bush Tax.
Dave,
Really, coho and sockeye tastes just fine, and they’re lower trophic level, so they have even fewer contaminants than wild chinook. Just sayin’.
And the worst part about salmon farms is the spread of viruses and fish lice. Some research is showing that fish lice picked up by the little guys (juvenile salmon, that is) as they pass by farms as they go out to sea are a serious threat to their ocean survival, which is the biggest unknown factor in the salmon abundance equation.
