Am I crazy, or did we already do what McCain is proposing to do almost 60 years ago?:
Sens. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) exchanged barbs this week challenging each other's knowledge of events in Iraq. Obama charged that McCain, who supports Bush's Iraq policy, had failed to learn from the administration's mistakes, while McCain attacked Obama for not visiting the war zone for the past two years.
Both have said they would make significant changes in the intelligence community. McCain has said he would set up a new agency, patterned after the World War II Office of Strategic Services, with "a cadre of . . . undercover operatives" to conduct unconventional and psychological warfare and covert action.
In fact, this seems to me to be exactly what we did as part of the National Security Act of 1947, which among other things established the National Security Council, Joint Chiefs of Staff and CIA. The latter of which was built based upon the OSS.
So can anybody tell me what he's talking about? I mean, c'mon, he knows about the CIA, he was almost a teenager when it was created!
I am suspicious it is just a way to create another organization that can make up intelligence in a Cheneyesque fashion so we can go to more wars and not have to rely upon actual, verifiable "intelligence."

McSame gets scarier every day. Have you noticed those strings that go up from his hands and feet and make his mouth open and close when this drivel is exuded…
This is a very stupid man.
Sure, just like his brilliant idea for the League of Democracies, a shadow UN without all of those annoying countries that won’t toe the Bushie line.
Rumsfeld already had a go at this, creating his own intelligence corps inside the Pentagon (separate from the Defense Intelligence Agency).
You can bet McCain’s shadow CIA would be yet another hollowed-out shell, run by private contractors and answerable to no-one.
We’re back in formatting hell, it appears. Prolly drive the trolls crazy.
Obama has nowhere near McCain’s experience at senior moments. He forgot…..
I like this new format. Very modernistic and sparse. A refreshing change from the very busy pages that inflict themselves on us every day.
Right let’s build on the paranoia…more fear
Rearranging the deck chairs again?
Gut Homeland security McStain.
Speaking of the CIA, Fisk has this piece in yesterday’s Independent:

Mr Robert gives us another bit of reality.
Breaking News: McCain proposes research program for new transportation vehicle which will roll on 4 round objects. No name has yet been given to either the vehicle or the round objects.
Does anyone else see major danger in having a bunch of private armies made legal and being given the free right of run around loose in the country? I thoroughly expect to hear that we will be using Blackwater to do our border control, and they will be answerable to no one, just as they are answerable to no one in Iraq. Whoever pays the bills gets to call the shots. Does posse comitatus still have any validity in this country? Or is that permanently lost?
Seems as if the formatting problems and other problems are more frequent when we get transferred to other websites- as in this case.
It’s all good now.
YAY MODS!!!
New Christy
About half of the current intelligence budget already goes to private contractors. At one point there was a study done on how many non-government intelligence employees. The results were so alarming the report was suppressed.

And that doesn’t even tcount the blurring of spying functions between the government and the telecoms.
[Wow, long time no see!]
Laura Rozen had this Sat. from the LATimes:
From her addendum:
And if McCain doesn’t win, isn’t that a dainty dish to set before a new president?
my tubes were down and I haven’t been able to comment on quite a few threads, will work my way down stairs from here
the post misses the point of mccains position, he is justifying cheney’s make believe cia called “team b” and he’s promising his own, I guess it will be “team c”
cheney used it to make up false data during nixon, during bush and now mccain plans the same
I also was not able to access FDL for almost 24 hours.
What we need is more consolidation and transparency and responsible monitoring of our intelligence agencies.
9/11 … right and left hands not working together and serious profound intelligence never heeded and getting sent up the chain. Can we not learn from our mistakes. Can we not pool our knowledge while acting ethically and not with collective paranoia?
McCain should familiarize himself with what [.gov site] Members of the Intelligence Community (IC), particularly the intelligence agencies of the military services as well as the CIA, have been doing.
