Touched down in San Juan at noon and checked my dragging, coffee-depleted self into the hotel. I must say, palm trees outside my window are a nice change of pace; ordinarily it’s a slightly rusted fire escape upon which pigeons have left their trademark Rorschach blots.
After downing some much needed caffeine, I headed to the Convention Center to pick up my press badge and found myself immersed in purple. The union’s health care division Assembly was dispersing, and the hundreds of workers piled out, a sea of purple t-shirts and yellow lanyards. So many purple t-shirts…
I stopped to chat with a group of public service employees who had been taking pictures with the disturbingly handsome, Kevlar-vested S.W.A.T. team outside the Hall. Members of Local 668 in Pennsylvania, the group was quick to answer a basic softball question, "What is the most important benefit you receive as a member of a union?"
"Job security."
"Health care."
"Decent income."
"Regaining bumping rights."
What came next was hardly surprising, given that unions have been on the decline in this country for so long. (I can just hear the panty-twisted, accusatory shrieks of "Communists!" over at The Corner now.) "Unions provide a voice for the workers," said one woman. "Government has to stop balancing the budget on our backs."
This echoes what I’d been hearing as I wandered around the place, getting my bearings. Passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. Justice for all. More and better organizing. Political accountability. Whether or not you agree with the union’s means, the ends seem pretty clear: a return to worker-driven politics.
This should be an interesting couple of days. Especially with those hottie SWAT guys hanging around outside.

About Firedoglake
Hey!
Puerto Rico! Yeah…!
Howdy wt! I loved your smokers’ pole earlier.
What are bumping rights?
Como te gusta Puerto Rico, Tigre Acuatica?
Digg!
In event of a lay-off, the right to move into another position, if the position is currently held by someone of lower seniority.
Bumping rights: If your employer gets rid of your job, you have the right to “bump” someone else who has less seniority than you do. That person then has the right to “bump” someone farther down so that they can still keep a job, and so on down the line until the last person, the person with the least seniority.
Fern, you say it so much better than I did.
Oh my. It’s Saturday night and WT is in Puerto Rico. This is definitely going to be interesting! :D
Thanks Fern.
Thanks Toby.
Whoops, hi guys!

I hope you are having a mojito…and some awesome food!
Thanks watertiger!
That’s it…I owe you a…”mojito”!!! lol bad, bad, bad….
Watertiger~ How many delegates are we talkin’ here? Any feel for how it’s leaning?
Pardon the off-topic, Watertiger, but I received an e-mail from Huffington Post saying Obama was going to make himself available to the media to answer questions about quitting his church, and this was to occur at about 8:15 p.m. ET.
Does anybody know whether that has happened? I haven’t seen anything on TV.
I’ve got quite a few mint slips sprouting on the kitchen windowsill.
Salud!
MMMudslides!

Is PR having a convention, or cauci, or a primary- or all the above.
It’s having a primary tomorrow, and, apparently, a union convention
The Bacardi site has a whole video and everything. Looks like a citrusy mint julip to me…
Oh, Watertiger. I’m thinking you’re in for a really good time. I chipped in a little on an Obama supporter going down.
I know nothing about Puerto Rico. Can you give us a flavor?
Here’s what I’m likin’…people coming out of the woodwork…unions…voter participation…
America’s wakin’ up.
Bye, bye Bushco…
Adios, Bush. Hasta en el carcel!
No, I didn’t sneak over in the middle of the night and rustle your mint! Neighbbor, Mrs. Kennedy, 3 doors down. Spearmint.
I thought it was just fizzy water, sugar, mint and rum. Lime maybe? Guess that would make it citrusy.
I’ve never had one, but I think that is exactly what it is…the thing is though that in the islands, they make a great cocktail without the mint…they use great rum, sugar, and fresh limes….
Middle of the night???? I OFFERED it to you!
I want some!
Sorry to rain, but they still have the machines and are fucking with the polls to make it look plausible.
Can I buy you a Mojito?
I sense a lot of hope in the people in the video. I think we’re gonna get out of this mess.
must be off, but i will keep you apprised of the goings on here!
I know you did! But I never came and got any.
Hmmm…I was just getting all hopeful and everything…oh, yeah…Diebold..ES&S…hellloooo….
Yes, please on the Mojito…make it a double…

Aw, man, watertiger has left the building? I wanted to hear more about the sweet SWAT team!
It’s an adventure Watertiger…have a great evening!!! Have a magic evening!!
hahahahahaha….!!!
Hey, thanks! Don’t mind if I do…
Thanks – I always thought it was Cuban, not Puerto Rican.
But, I confess, I’ve never had one either. Sigh.
They took her out for Mojitos.
Yeah…why isn’t it on the video….we need another video of the SWAT hunk…
The OTHER Mojito:
http://www.apriliausa.com/mode…..asp?id=118
The answer is here, somewhere.
Probably not a good idea to mix the two…
Wangdang…remember the really nice guy that sat with us at our table that we talked to outside….the guy with the scented cigarettes…I forget his name. He said he had never been there before, that he came over from the pool place…alone……he was awfully sharp….do you think he was from an “agency”…??? Or do you think he was just a really nice guy?
John, wasn’t it? Seemed like a nice, family kinda guy… but I’m a sucker.
Way to neatly tie up the thread’s themes.
(mmm, well, except for the serious part..) ; )
I dunno…
LOL!
I’m enduring the last slow 15 min of my workday – I’ll read that later. Good find!
Rum–I don’t know—never
I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I am in the Democratic Party and its Rules Committee’s decision on how to seat the Florida and Michigan. How can you decide to only seat some of the delegation or to take away their votes? How can you decide to award delegates to people who weren’t even on the ballot in Michigan? What on earth is the party doing? What message does the party send to its members and to other citizens in the United States when it strips away the votes its citizens? It DOESN’T matter that you warned the states not to move up their primaries!!! You don’t punish the elected officials and state parties who made the BAD decisions by stripping away the votes of your party members!!! How does that make sense? How short sighted of you all – after the voting scandals in Florida in 2000, especially! I cannot see any way around this – I used to wonder why people voted against their own best interest – i.e. why poor people would vote for Republican candidates, etc? I am starting to understand. It becomes clearer to me every day that the party elite and their groupies who control this party are out of touch with reality and are more concerned with their own position and status within the party than they are with doing the right thing or caring for their party members. Bye! Good riddance. You won’t get any support from me in the future – I’ve made that mistake for the last time. I will not reward your irresponsible behavior with support in any way, shape, or form – no matter who your candidate is.
Seems it’s Pina Coladas. Or is that Penis Colossus?
I’ve been here since 7:00 a.m., I can’t do serious anymore.
: )
The committee agreed on a compromise offered by the Michigan Democratic Party that would split the difference, allowing Clinton to take 69 delegates and Obama 59. Each delegate would get half a vote at the convention in Denver this summer, according to the deal.
The deal passed 19-8. Thirteen members of the committee supported Clinton, so she wasn’t even able to keep her supporters together.
The committee also unanimously agreed to seat the Florida delegation based on the outcome of the January primary, with 105 pledged delegates for Clinton and 67 for Obama, but with each delegate getting half a vote as a penalty.
Then what will you do?
This is interesting…
Sounds as if Clinton nets 24 votes today.
Whew! Following the liveblogging? Don’t blame you a bit.
Luckily, I’ve only gotten bits here and there, looking in.
Is it over?
Sounds like party time to me.
not enough

breaking radio silence for mohitos
one of my best friends has been drinking mohitos for years.
has made me quite a few out on her farmhouse porch.
the way she does it is-
grind a massive amount of mint leaves with sugar in a glass…….use an ice cube and a fork to do it if you don’t have a mortar…….or mortar and pestle them…lots of leaves and sugar….and load into a glass, layer with ice…….
ice ice ice……….rum……or vodca…….
tonic or club…….
gotta crush those leaves or it isn’t a mohito. it’s a cellular thing………pulverize them.
the key is having a good mint……orange mint is wonderful…..just planted some, just for her…..
sweet mint is good too, just planted some of that, too….
’they say’ use spearmint, but i think that isn’t as good.
here is a recipe–i advise using sugar, not a syrup, and using it to crush the leaves with a fork in a glass if you don’t have a mortar and pestle, that is how my friend does it…….and she doesn’t use lime juice, not necessary. and frankly, i think it tastes fresher, like a gin and tonic, clean, without the lime.
An easy mojito cocktail recipe to liven up your evening:
1.5 oz BACARDI Rum
12 fresh spearmint leaves
1/2 lime
7 oz club soda
2 tbsp. simple syrup
(or 4 tsp. sugar)
For the smoothest majitos, gently crush mint leaves and lightly squeeze lime in a cool tall glass. Pour sweet syrup on top to cover and fill glass with ice. Add Bacardi Rum, club soda, and stir your emerging mojito well. Garnish with a lime wedge, a few sprigs of mint, toast, sip, and enjoy Bacardi mojitos with your friends.
For over a century, the Bacardi Mojito has channeled the spirit of the Caribbean. Use our original mojito cocktail recipe to bring a little of old Havana your mojito party or gathering.
I second that emotion!
OMG. : (
Can’t we just party awhile?
I believe the correct term is muddling. (Crushing the mint leaves.)

Pretty much agree, however, that would assume that we are in a situation where a coup had not “already” effectively occurred in 2000….
Think about it.
Do you want to continue the “permanent campaign” (as referred to in Scott McClellan’s book)…let me translate…Rove’s “Permanent Republican Majority}….
Or do you want to free our country from the tyranny of the last 8 years.
You decide.
I’ll eat crow on a candidate, but I’ll sure as hell not allow another Republican torturing spying election stealing Administration in if I can help it.
So!!!
Got that too, and signed. I think he is entitled to some money, though. He needs to pay his lawyers for the upcoming war crimes trials.
So. Looks like danny lukasiak got scrubbed.
doodle at 81–thanks, hadn’t heard it used that way before….seriously…..muddling…..is that a texas thing?
BTW Danny-
The Republicans also stripped their Michigan delegation of half their votes because they violated the party rules and jumped to the front of the line. The Republicans also strip the votes away from those losing delegates in Primary States (they are Winner Take All). That means that in primaries where four candidates were running that three of them got no representation…and their voters were zilch.
So I’d suggest you find a party that actually does take each and every voter and proportionately divides the votes. But it won’t be the Greens or Libertarians either since they run caucuses. Maybe some small party in Europe that gets exactly 5% of the vote to qualify for parliament (Wait! That means their votes count more than the tiny parties that don’t reach the magic criteria).
The only way to assure your vote earns exactly what you do during an election is to not vote…in that case it’s worth zero.
