Do you remember a time when unions were common in this country, fighting for workers’ rights and guaranteeing them access to health care and retirement benefits? Do you remember how an actor named Ronald Reagan (ironically, a Screen Actors Guild member, as well as its president) waged war on America’s unions, setting off a chain of events that would eventually decimate the role that unions filled in our society? Without the support of unions, workers have spent the last twenty-odd years watching in fear and disgust as corporations "outsource" and "downsize" their employees, and then reward their CEOs with multimillion dollar bonuses.
The Service Employees International Union is holding its quadrennial Convention this upcoming week in San Juan, Puerto Rico to discuss once again how to unite American employees under the protective umbrella of union membership. According to the SEIU:
50 percent of workers would choose to have a union if they didn’t face employer opposition. That’s at least 40 million who don’t have one now. But taking advantage of this opportunity to strengthen all working people requires overcoming some stark realities.
Can you imagine joining a union a without fear of retaliation by your employer? The mind, it boggles.
I will be in San Juan through next Wednesday, reporting on the Convention activities (and maybe sneaking in some snark about the primary next Tuesday). So watch this space for updates!

WT, Puerto Rico? Right On!
You’d better report on a really good mojito recipe… hint hint
bastid! ;)
I thought, from the title, we’d get a little Wet Side Story.
One of the last things of any worth to emerge from CheetoLand was a series on the legislation that ReThugs hav pushed thru, with ‘Democrat’ Party help, in the last 30 years which has decimated, of worse, the union movement in this benighted rat-hole of a nation. Unions are one of the best ways to fight corporate abuse of the citizenry.
Fortunately, new leaders like Andy Stern, whom I’ve met, are taking tougher more successful line. They are aided by the surge of immigrants and such who make up the lowest earning employees and who unlike the ‘creative class’ blockheads who work long hours for salary to ‘be a team member’ can do long division.
I look to see unions gaining in strength as more folks are thrown out of work in the…..
Race to the Bottom!
That’s a Hawaiian thang, Pun! ;-)

I *think* he ships out for basic next week. 9 weeks in Oklahoma, then 10 months in Alabama for some specialized training. Things hit a little snag yesterday inducing full panic all around, but I think he’s good to go.
How ya been?
the chick’s in the male.
*(ducking)*
You know, while St. Ronnie was on his pilgrimage to gutting unions, he also did major damage to the air travel system in this country with his attack on the flight controllers.
I was seriously jonesing… So, he’s headed to Sill and then Bama? What’s his MOS?
El Gato Negro in da house!
fixer of all things electronic – including missiles.
Be very afraid… lol.
That was the first union he busted.
Part of the irony is PATCO had endorsed him in ‘80 IIRC.
Um, evidence that flight controller dismissal caused ATC accidents? None that I’ve ever read about. Near misses, yes, but we don’t know what the near misses were before ATCs were fired.
I need to post this on every single union thread;
the very word “union” has been deionized by the corporate world
why?
because they want something for nothing that’s why
a business has to bargain for everything it uses in production of it’s product, it bargains for the price of their supplies
and when it doesn’t bargain, the supplier sets the price, NOT the purchaser
the union is the method labor uses to bargain for the PROPER VALUE of our product
unions are “collective bargaining” and gives the laborer the proper leverage to bargain IN GOOD FAITH for the proper value of this product called “labor”
a business can make a bad deal when it bargains the price of steal, rent, plastic and other goods, when it does it needs to renegotiate that deal
the same thing is true of the union, a union can easily come away with a deal that is counter productive to the industry and therefore counter productive to the laborer
they then must renegotiate the deal
HOWEVER, the PROVIDER sets the price, NOT the purchaser, the purchaser has the right to NEGOTIATE the price it pays for the products it needs to survive but they DO NOT get to set the price
and that’s the way “the union” has to be portrayed by progressives, we need to point out;
“big business doesn’t want to pay it’s own bills, it wants to set the price for product, well tough luck, the provider sets the price not the purchaser and they need to stop trying to steal from Americans”
and when it’s pointed out that big business will simply “outsource” their labor force the progressives have to point out;
“that’s right, because of the ridiculous policies that reward companies for using child and slave labor abroad, they get other people to pay their bills, those policies allowing them to use child and slave labor have to STOP
Americans do NOT want to support slavery and they do NOT want to support the exploitation of children”
you see, we can use THEIR platforms to prove how WRONG they are and how deceived they’ve been by the corporations
rofl, wtf, passed cnn n they are talk’n bout chop’d liver?
this is very nice to see indeed, I just got this from think progress;
UnionsSlaves. You youngsters are going crazy for the mojitos, no? My daughter and I walked near her new apartment (sob) and she ordered a peach mojito. I’d never heard of that drink before, but it was good!
Oh fuck McClelland & his apologies. That’s all worthless. He was a mouthpiece at the only moment in history when his verbal utterances mattered.
It was hilarious when John Dean welcomed him into the fold…! ;-)
union salvos
mango mojitos are quite tasty.
Mango in any form is tasty…! ;-)
Geez, this has to fit in the “Man bites dog” category, doesn’t it?

I have some friends who love them. I’ve never had one. Here’s one…sure looks like a great summer cocktail:

eCahn — did I say that? I’ll have to go back and look. :) but I certainly think that the system doesn’t run as well as it did 25 years ago. Part of that, I’m sure has to do with the fact that we’ve got too many planes in the air and not enough places to put them, but if we had more controllers, it might run smoother than it does now.
sorry ecahn, a man can reclaim his integrity
of course this is late, but it’s not TOO late, not by a long shot, he can and IS doing quite a bit of good right now
we have all sought redemption, scotty is doing his now and I believe it is for redemption not personal gain
he is now a pox in politics, he will not be trusted by democrats and he is reviled by republicans, it will be very hard for him to get a job through corporate media and this book will not give go too far
this is a good thing he is doing here and even IF it’s for personal gain, it is still a good thing he is doing
I give him the benefit of the doubt
I want to elaborate a little here;
when I saw scotty speak as press sec, it was clear he was struggling with what he had to say, it was brutally clear, you could see the wheels spinning and the brain saying;
“how do I get myself out of this”
in my opinion he was bad at lying because he didn’t want to do it
you see snow and the blond very happy to lie, they have absolutely no problem saying what they are saying, they are on a mission to “defend and save the legasy” of the war monguer in chief
scotty was a good press secretary when he believed what they had to say but I saw his heart get broken when he had to deny comment about his statement defending karl rove in the plame case
he looked betrayed and he was, he thought rove told him the truth and he found out he was lied to
I am liking scotty right now
Awaiting a physical to start working atop Mauna Kea in one of the observatories… Really looking forward to it! 8-)
McCain, who called Hillary a bitch, is berating the newest “pastor/priest” for being mean to Hillary.
What a frikkin’ hypocrite….where’s that video…..
Actually, as one who has made many mistakes in my life and been forgiven much, I would like to speak in favor of welcoming McClellan with open arms. He has seen the error of his ways, and moreover, been brave enough to say so publicly. This is a lot more than most people are capable of.
Sure we wish he would have been pure from the beginning. But he is here with us now, in the reality based community, and he is being savaged by the right. Shall we savage him too? Or help bring him ashore to the land of reality?
If you want more people from the inside to speak out, welcome them warmly. If you want everyone who is thinking about speaking up to silence themselves, sure blast away. We can be right, or we can accept the imperfect human nature of other people.
This is a brave man. I welcome him into the conversion/conversation, and invite others. Let’s be happy that people are coming our way, not scornful, ok?
Yummers. Jossie’s had a lot more mint, and it had been mangled up. Apparently to enhance the mint flavor. This one looks much prettier!
You’re right. I know I’ve tried to redeem dreadful mistakes I’ve made, and was given the opportunity to do so. I’m loathe to deny that opportunity to anyone else.
Maybe more to the point: he can testify.
In the words of a con icon: “trust but verify.”
While what Scotty says may help to shed light, what he doesn’t say is, additionally, most useful.
What difference does it make if firing ATCs didn’t degrade system? You didn’t say it explictly, but you inferred it. What is your assertion that system doesn’t work as well based on? More people are flying at lower fares than ever, except for recent rise in fuel costs. I think you’d be hard put to make a case that Reagan’s firing ATCs was bad for customers of airline industry.
If you’re going to support unions (which I do), you should pick cases where union busting made the system work worse. Airlines is not a robuse example.
Yep, “right to work” is just another bastardization of language by the right.
And now for an OT:
CNN is running a story on oil price manipulation:
It’s very interesting that they have the Enron connection and the key move of getting futures contracts moved offshore. Missing from the story, however, is what we learned here at the lake this week about Phil Gramm, Wendy Gramm and John McCain’s roles in this happening. We need to make sure they get linked to this story in the MSM.
Oh, how exciting! Here’s hoping that you amaze the docs and are atop Mauna Kea ASAP. What are you looking for?
What’s going to happen tomorrow? Will Hillary’s supporters further damage her?
now THAT is cool!
A person might possibly (in the outer realms of possibility) be able to reclaim his integrety, but if you’ve listened to beam-me-up Scotty in the last two days, you would not nominate him for that award.
Excellent – good luck!
o/t but jeez did I just see Sam Donaldson on my screen? Mr. “Hold On, Mr. President” himself on Dan Abrams.
AND a caption saying right wing media saying Pastor comments will hurt Obama or something.
I’ve never seen the phrase right wing media on my TV. Is this thanks to Scotty?
Honestly, what could he contribute that really would expand the investigation… He gave Fitz everything he knew already!
Thanks ya’ll for the congrats, there waiting for a few more individuals before sending us en masse for the physicals…!
YAY CT!! What great news! Every best wish to you. Dress warmly!
May I add to your list?
Don’t forget the big lie of corporations giving stock options instead of cash dollars along with a pat on the back and the promise of becoming as rich as your boss in the future. Oh, and comp time that you are not allowed to take because it’s always “crunch time”.
Works like a charm in silicon valley…
eCahn – you are correct – my evidence for the system not working as well as I recall it from 25 years ago rests completely on the trips I have taken in the past 5 years when I and my family have been left on the tarmac for hours, kicked off flights, had flights cancelled out from under us at our connecting points because of traffic problems, and so on. I am probably blaming the air traffic situation on the lack of adequate personnel when I should be blaming the airlines.
I know, I’m wrestling with that too. I don’t see what he had to add, except testimony on the record about the stuff in the book. But on the other hand, why would the Rs be going so ape-shit unless there was a real danger there for them?
Where’s Suz? She’s usually around by now!
Yes, Hmmm, precisely.
I am not breaking confidences by saying that there are many, many people in Washington who are watching carefully the kind of reception that McClellan is getting.
People have jobs, families to support, mortgages, do you want them to step forward or not? Shouldn’t we be the ones who are cheering them on?
Let’s argue the hypothetical after we have gotten the country back.
I think they went ape-shit over the fact he was such a Bushite, it really irks ‘em and the fact he called out Turd Blossom so fervently…! ;-)
OTOH, my recent air trips, much fewer than when I was working, have been flawless. Pointing to the problem of anecdotal evidence.
We need to avoid that. We need to stick to evidence that is well documented. Otherwise we end up with mud in the eye, and that does not advance the cause.
No matter how aggravating Reagan’s firing ATCs was, we need to show that it damaged something (besides ATCs income) to make the case that it was counterproductive.
Yep. I’m guessing there are LOTS of things he didn’t put into that book…

Eli upstairs.
Wedding weekend.
How rare, how strange!
I’m sure that air travel is down recently because many folks either can’t afford it. Fewer passengers = smoother trip through the airport/air.

Any chance that we could host Scottie for a FDL Book Salon…? I had to see O’Really’s reaction and he was foaming at the mouth that Scott had the audacity to show up on NBC and MSNBC… I was rolling… He went OFF!!!
Yes, that’s about the highest hope I can muster here: Scotty will put his set of dots on the record, and other folks will come forward and put their particular sets of dots on the record…. and eventually the right set of connections will emerge.
So: You Go, Scotty!
(Not to be confused with my UCB Berkeley protest sign: “Yoo Go Now!”)
Oi, tudo bem?

Dearest WaterTiger–
The phrase, “Do you remember” is off-putting to many folk younger than about 45.
You make wonderful argument, but it doesn’t help to presume your audience is purely mid-baby boomer.
