ABC News reports from Iraq this afternoon:
Thousands of Iraqis filled the streets of Baghdad’s Sadr City neighborhood this afternoon to demonstrate against a long-term United States presence in Iraq, the first significant anti-American rally in the massive Shiite slum in more than two years.
As American helicopters hovered overhead, young and old men and even children flowed out of their weekly Friday prayers and began burning American flags and chanting "no, no to America" and "yes, yes to independence."
The residents carried posters of Moqtada al-Sadr, the anti-American Shiite cleric whose Mahdi Army has fought against U.S. soldiers and who is accused of carrying out much of the violence here. Two days ago Sadr called on supporters to rally against an agreement currently under discussion that could allow the U.S. to build permanent bases in Iraq and grant American citizens in Iraq immunity from prosecution.
. . . Sheikh Mohannad Al-Gazawi, the imam who led Friday prayers during 105-degree heat, told attendees that the agreement "aims at paving the way for a 99-year period of American control of Iraq."
. . . The protestors carried signs that called the long-term agreement "worse than the occupation itself" and a "war declaration against the Iraqi people."
. . . "The reasons for the peaceful demonstration were not made obvious," the U.S. military said in a statement.
Which goes to show that denial isn’t just a river in Egypt — it flows through the Green Zone in Baghdad as well. But it’s not just Sadr and his supporters who are unhappy, as the New York Times notes in a story on their website:
Aides to Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the most powerful Shiite cleric in Iraq, have also expressed concerns about the negotiations . . . [and] some other Iraqi lawmakers are raising questions about the timing of the deal.
One American official in Baghdad said that the Iraqis appeared to be unwilling to make any concessions before the country’s provincial elections later this year to avoid seeming, to Iraqi voters, — to be too accommodating to the occupying forces. “They are playing hardball right now,” the official said.
The recalcitrant Iraqi politicians include some of our erstwhile closest allies:
Mahmoud Othman, an independent Kurdish lawmaker, said many Iraqi leaders were being kept in the dark about the security pact, which he thinks should not be completed until after the American presidential elections in November.
. . . Even one of the prime minister’s closest allies, Ali Adeeb, a senior member of Mr. Maliki’s Dawa Party, expressed similar reservations.
“This agreement is between Iraq and the United States president, and the American policy is not clear,” Mr. Adeeb said. “Therefore, we can wait until the American elections to deal with a Democratic or Republican president.”
Get the feeling that maybe they’d prefer to deal with someone sane Barack Obama rather than another Republican president reading from the neocon playbook?
The Washington Post noted this morning that "the war in Iraq has moved back to center stage in the presidential election," but that "the war is more a wild card than a slam dunk for either side." That’s even more true if you consider what more Iraqis might do to make their preferences known between now and November.

’allo?
Swopa!
Well, sounds to me like the surge is turning a corner… or whatever…
Jus Cogens!
Wait, no way! I even read the “teaser” first!
FunnyDiva
It is forking enraging.
I read somewhere (Juan Cole, I think, but I can’t find the link) that the US has fired over 200 missiles into Sadr City…Isn’t that a frikkin’ war crime?
jus cogens!
Let the Iraqi’s vote whether they want us there or not!
Over 200 war crimes..
jus cogens!
SO-FA away
Doesn’t anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
Doesn’t help to know that you’re just time away
Long ago I reached for you, and there you stood
Holding you again could only do me good
How I wish I could, but you’re SO-FA away
Jus Cogens can be said without the teaser ZED is dead.
I really want to find the article, it was scathing…
Retaliating with acts of war against a civilian population, yes that’s against the Geneva Conventions. Hope we still believe in them.
Is it January 2009 yet?
punaise you are cracking me up
:~)
“This agreement is between Iraq and the United States president, and the American policy is not clear,” Mr. Adeeb said. “Therefore, we can wait until the American elections to deal with a Democratic or Republican president.”
What do you want to bet that the Iraqi’s even the most bought off by Bush politicians will not sign off on giving Blackwater immunity? After all the Iraqi voters make their disgust evident to their politicians with bombs.
I am sure that voting to give Blackwater immunity would move any Iraqi politician to the top of the list.
I think the push against Sader now is to make sure that his people will not vote in the upcoming Iraqi election which is also in November I think.
Whoa. Most of FDL’s gone 404 from here. Anyone else?
An imperial occupier can impose its will on a vanquished population for only so long. And it gets more expensive by the day. How much you wanna bet that any such “agreement” is regarded by the Iraqi people as null and void within a few years?
Bob in HI
PS It is good to see the normal FDL GUI back!
Yeah
Now it’s back. You guys! Quit it!
404 => 707
I feel refreshed.
And now (show text) is back. Was gone for a while there.
yeah, i have to say that i am a big fan of puns and punaise is most certainly the best :)
So to speak.
LMAOROFL!!!!111
Great job on correcting the “problem” on the toobz! It’s a little in and out, but mostly loooking gooood.
(Hey, backstage — flip the switch again! I wanna see this commenter’s head explode!!)
Much too late for that…
Digg it Already!
u funny too.
want the 411 on the Formula 409 used to clean up the 404? it’s the one after 909
So lemme see if I got this. The majority of Iraqis want us out of there. The majority of Americans want us out of there.
Am I missing anything?
The ironies here are multiple. Bani Sadr is, in many ways, the true nationalist and most Iraqis know it. So what do our keystone kops korps do? We get mad at Sadr for being uppity, and make a devil’s pact with the faction probably most closely tied to Iran (the so-called Badr Brigade), which was formed by the Iranian government, and is NOT connected with Mokhtada al Sadr. And then we have the chutzpah to complain about Iranian influence!
Sadr, though Shi’ite, has important connections to some Sunni groups, and would probably do a much better job of cobbling together a pan-Iraqi coalition that could govern Iraq than the artificial puppet government we have installed in the Green Zone. But no, that would make too much sense.
Bob in HI
nope, it is all too clear.
Why wait Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistan issued a Fatwas against Iraqi’s feeding Americans
http://www.blogrunner.com/snap….._arrested/
Don’t Arab culture’s have rules about treating guests well and offering them food and drink if they can? This sounds like they are dehumanizing us in preparation for war.
Americans just dehumanize people by telling Rush Limbaugh hey look at him he’s different, course anyone not fat and on drugs is different than Rush.
Nobody wants a new American president more than Iraqis.
Most excellent post, Swopa!
Yes. The majority of EVERY FRICKIN’ BODY ELSE wants us out of there too.
” Don’t Arab culture’s have rules about treating guests well and offering them food and drink if they can? “
Yes, and they did. But Arabs also have a saying: a guest is like fish: after three days, they begin to smell. At last count, we have been camped on their doorstep considerably longer than 3 days. We are smelling quite bad by now, and they are all quite tired of us.
Bob in HI
That should have its own post most people don’t know that Bush’s best friend Prime Minister Maliki is Bader Brigade with STRONG TIES TO IRAN. But like Vladimir Putin I’m sure Bush likes his eyes!
It’s something like a Chapter of “How badly can we screw this up?” The answer, I believe, is readily apparent…
I put this up in an earlier thread.
Lourdes Garcia Navarro on Not Press Related (NPR) just was reporting on opposition to the Status of Forces agreement Bush is trying to negotiate with the Iraqis before leaving office so that he can tie the next President into his disastrous Iraq policy. She mentioned groups in Iraq that rejected or had problems with the agreement. She did not say word one about Democratic opposition to it in this country. She did not mention that such an SOF was inherently different from others we have because it is the only one where combat operations are ongoing. Finally, she said nothing about the fact that Bush was effectively negotiating a treaty without Congressional approval and in violation of the Constitution. Public media as bad as commercial but more vapid.
Speaking of vapid, David Brooks commented on the NewsHour that McClellan’s book was vapid, filled with stale facts, there wasn’t a new idea in it, and he didn’t learn a thing from it. In other words, it was much like your typical David Brooks column.
Regiem change!
Israel, U.S., and U.K.!
I do.
I thought that was:
“Treat your friend as a friend and after the third day him em a hoe”
:)
Speaking of vapid, David Brooks commented on the NewsHour that McClellan’s book was vapid, filled with stale facts, there wasn’t a new idea in it, and he didn’t learn a thing from it….
that explains the full-court GOP vapid Veep-pounce team
lol @ “Not Press Related”
So if its a treaty Bush has to get it through the Senate right which will not happen in an election year.
If its not a treaty then Obama can reverse it with an Executive Order right?
So how will Bush tie Obama’s hands? I don’t doubt you I’m just wondering how?
Well, the ‘dead enders’ as Rummy used to say, still wants us there… Our 28%’ers and Maliki…! ;-)
Sounds like Brooks is breathing vapors again.
LS– here you are:
Bob in HI
wearing his patented Brooks Bothers attire.
Actually, Maliki doesn’t want us there, either. Note the comment from one of the top guys in his party (Dawa) in the NYT article.
I think the Bush Administration and the Republicans are going to sell this on the basis that any retreat from what Bush and Maliki agree on will be an instance of America breaking its word and making us an unreliable partner. Not saying I believe this but this is what their argument will be.
For more on the recent activity of the Badr Organization, see as always Juan Cole.
Bob in HI
Good the more time Bush talks about staying in Iraq the more it helps us. I was worried about Obama’s hands really being tied by some secret legal move on Bush’s part.
Thanks Swopa.
In response, Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr, the leader of the Mahdi Army, called for demonstrations on Friday and then for a million-man march on April 9, the anniversary of the US occupation of Baghdad and the fall of the Baath government. (Sadr is happy about the fall of Saddam; unhappy about the foreign military occupation).
http://www.juancole.com/2008/0…..litia.html
Another million man march the MSM won’t cover.
On Washington Week, all the hack reporters are shaking their heads about McClellan’s book wondering how McClellan could be there for so long and not realize what was going on. Talk about a complete lack of self awareness, or sense of irony among these tweebs.
attack of the bobble heads?
They need a mirror that and we still need to take away Judy Miller’s Pulitzer Prize for reporting lies that got us into an unjust war! Jus Cogens Judy Miller!
Bobble heads– isn’t that an appropriate image for the Washington DC pundit class?
Bob in HI
could somebody find the link where the president says “we will only be there as long as they want us there”
I don’t mean the rediculous “we will stand up when they stand down” bit, I seem to remember he said out loud on the TEEvee “when they want us to leave we will leave”
I hope I am not mistaken and if I am not we need that clip
Unless they’re “bobble feeted”
a most illustrative image, if i do say so myself.
lol * groans *
Washington Week’s bunch is on average head and shoulders above the rest of ‘em, though.
Swopa! great visuals, dude.
So the Iraqi people want a Friedman Unit on their terms now, eh?
al Friedman?
Thank you!!
Swopa. Great Post. I love the picture of the tyrannical child…
Is this what you seek?
Bushspeak
O —OHHH , Iraq is now gonna have to pass an anti-US-flag burning amendment !
And H.R. (PuffenStuff) Clinton will surely concur as she favors the same jingoistic crap for America . That was when I (a sexist?) decided she was never gonna be my choice .
No. Can we see some purple fingers in both countries? I suggest that in November, Obama voters purple up their fingers with markers or whatever. It would be stronger than the “I Voted” sticker, and leave less room for manipulation of the vote by the republicans.
Ooooooooooooooooo , good IDEA !
Great idea.
I wish I could take credit for it. Click the photo to see the explanation of its origin.
an FU! Happy Suck on It day, ES.
Iraqis don’t want to finalize any deals with their occupiers until said occupiers have their election which coincidentally is six months from now (Friedman Unit, ala Tom Friedman, I think).
Oh, and this election year CIA summer special!:
Al Qaeda is on the run!
WTG Bush and GWOT
Proposed new Democratic motto Left is the new Right after all we have been right about everything the the Wrong (formerly known as the Right) have been wrong about
Everything! Iraqi Weapons of Mass Destruction, Wrong that Iraqi oil revenues would pay for the war, Wrong about tax cuts being self financing, paying for themselves or helping the economy.
Wrong to oppose raising the MPG of cars in America when we are fighting a War for Oil! Wrong to start a housing bubble, Wrong not to regulate financial markets when everyone but Greenspan knew there was a bubble.
Wrong to ignore New Orleans!
I like that or we could just buy a T-shirt?
Purple fingers are cool and all, but purple fingers ain’t gonna keep ESS voting machines honest.
I, WE do!
lol, yay! Happy FU!
OK, that’s two.. (I’m keeping track)
Its the fake polls showing McCain and Obama close when McCain can’t get half the votes in primary elections, the money or even the crowds Michelle Obama gets even when Bush is helping him but somehow the polls are close?
We might need to commission our own polls.
BRILLIANT!
trey?
This is completely and utterly OT, but the finals of the National Spelling Bee are on ABC, and it’s a simple pleasure to watch these kids excel.
As you were…
OT — Raw Story’s web server also went down for a bit, showed the “Attaboy, Apache is installed!” page.
Can we see some purple fingers in both countries?
O beautiful for specious lies,
For amber waves of grim,
For purple fingered majesties
Above the fruited pain!
Amer-Iraq-a! Amer-Iraq-a!
God shed his tears on thee
…
correct, the polls are already gamed, it is impossible for mccain or any republican to be polling higher then any democrat
they are preparing us for the big fix
Interesting: Scotty says he’d testify before congress, and White House Spokesmodel Dana Peroxide says they can prevent him from doing so.
We shall see.

Rigged polls don’t worry me much. Rigged election tabulation, now that worries me.
Thanks Hugh, I didn’t know about this agreement and I thought I was paying attention…so thanks.
I also heard Brooks on Scottie and just wanted to laugh. Brooks, the lapdog, telling us that Bush enjoyed argument. hahhahhah!
Rigged polls lead to plausibility of results of rigged tabulation…keeps the peasants from revolting.
c and l had a book salon with Crispin Miller;
we need to get this guy on every tube, every internets, every series of trucks that we can get him on, we need the media forced into having him as well
Indeed we shall. There comes a point, doesn’t there? I’ve been reading the collected works of Mr. Paine, who is really the average man’s founder, as far as I’m concerned.
the polls are being rigged so that the rigged election won’t look as rigged
believe me, these polls showing mccain is the first peg, they need to show a close race to overturn the election
the race is not close
How could they stop him now? He’s no longer a White House employee.
Juan Cole refers to a piece by Cerf and Navasky in Tomdispatch that 200 hellfire missiles had been unleashed on Baghdad, mostly in Sadr City according to WaPo, in the last two months, compared to six in the preceding three months in Baghdad.
Clever, as always!. Plus, I think it would show solidarity between Americans and Iraqis.
any treaty must be ratified by congress and if our congress ratifies any treaty this president signs they will be out of a job
sorry that was a response to comment #6, not #5.
The Rigged polls now will be used to try and justify the rigged election, I am not saying that anyone but a 30%er will buy it but thats what they are trying.
I agree to a certain extent, swopa, but, if we weren’t there, he’d have no viable means of propping his sorry ass up in the GZG… It’s a double edged sword…! Btw, water tiger had a post upstairs and i zedded, but, it seems to have gone into 404 land…
almost zed
Good catch on the book are they coming to the Lake?
this is not true, all republicans will buy it because mccain is their only hope and they must believe this president has not buried their party
they will buy it because they have to buy it, they have to feel vindicated and mccain winning will do just that
You guys are absolutely right about the polls, of course. I’m just sayin’, the actual ballot itself still worries me more.
I have no idea but they should, I think we need to blanket the tubes, the trucks, the internets, the googles and the voices with this guy
Donna Brazile sez STFU to Team Hil.
Water Tiger upstairs.
Wasn’t she a Hillary insider/supporter?
I think you have it. Dictators don’t do the will of the peeps.
Believe she was more on Al’s team by the end.
“”The reasons for the peaceful demonstration were not made obvious,” the U.S. military said in a statement.” LOL! The whole military? Would like to have heard that. Hell of a statement. Laughing out loud and sobbing.
