The characterization of McClellan as a snitch is all part of the standard Republican playbooks, which is to seize control of the narrative. Tell the story that you want to tell using the labels that you want to see stick. This technique can be used to build up a candidate like McCain. He’s a maverick and straightshooter. He has expertise in national security, etc. Or it can be used negatively as here. The Republicans do not want anyone telling even self serving truths about this Administration so they have come out in a pack to denounce McClellan. Even if the snitch label doesn’t stick immediately, it legitimizes the discussion “Is Scott McClellan a snitch?” And so keeps the association out there, McClellan, snitch.

They see Obama’s playing the race card throughout the campaign and no one calling him for it as frightening. They’re not upset with Obama because he’s black; they’re upset because they don’t expect to be treated fairly because they’re white. It’s not racism that is driving them, it’s racial resentment. And that is enforced because they don’t believe he understands them and their problems. Someone, either Poblano at fivethirtyeight.com or Al Giordano at The Field, had a post a week or two ago taking apart the idea in the political media at that point that Clinton had hit upon a “message” that works, the populist, working-class message, and that if she had only done that earlier, everything would have been different. Basically, it’s a stupid line of reasoning; the reason they went in that direction was because of the demographics of the later primaries, and it wouldn’t have worked in places like California.

I can’t help but wonder if after her earlier outburst, Ferraro acquired a bunch of new “friends” who started whispering right-wing narratives in her ear. The wingers have been pushing the idea that Obama would be a president for black people and take revenge on whites for a long time.

This ia bizarre. All of the page images have been replaced by words. I have refreshed, restarted Firefox, used a different browser, and tried it on another computer. Are we having tech problems?

i think it is ok now (at least for the moment). try refreshing the page again and see if it doesn’t look ok…

Selise, my cache clears when I quit the browser. That doesn’t help. I am on a Mac using OS-X 10.5.3 and Firefox 2.0.0.14. All of the formatting that involves images is gone, replaced in most cases by words (although the bars between comments are just gone). The pages have lost their formatting.

just guessing (because i don’t know wordpress or drupal) but it looks to me like the image files and css were taken down and uploaded on the fly.

I don’t know Wordpress either. But whatever happened is recent, because it was fine around 1:00 EDT.

you can clear the cache without quitting firefox.

go to tools > clear private data…

check clear cache, but make sure everything else is unchecked.

then click on the button that says “clear private data now”

Yes I know how to manually clear the cache. It didn’t work. I can tell from the comments that something is amiss at FDL and I’m sure the techies are on it.

I will go back to my real job and see if I can get something done before quitting time, and check back later.

the index file seems to load fine, but everything from the following directories gives and error msg of “internal server error” when it tries to load:

Noonan, correctly points out that if one is a lying mouthpiece for a rightwing President, it is not a good career move to point out, say that no, Ronald Reagan was not taking a nap while the Ollie North gang was conducting illegal foreign policy and lying about Nicaragua.

They knew this was going to happen. You don’t just plan all the crap this Bush administration has done without considering the after effects.

I suspect what they want is a complete blow-out and John McCain is the candidate to give it to ‘em.

But, of course, they won’t actually admit defeat and they won’t accept that public repudiation of what they’ve done is in any way an indication they were wrong or ‘caught’. They plan to work around the public.

They had all the government for a while and now I think they expect Dems to take it all and then later they can come back and tell the public, as they did with ‘divided government’, that this is just natural and one party or the other should have complete control when they’re in power. This sets them up to completely do it again at some future time. No acceptance of guilt or responsibility and no remorse. Completely sociopathic!

Then there’s the Bush Backstab: I expect this plan to fail completely and for the Bush family to blame it on someone else, probably everybody, so they can walk away with the booty and everyone else holds the empty political bag. What do the Bushies care? If they’ll backstab people as close to Dubya as Rove, McClellan and Alberto Gonzales, then they’ll betray anybody.
