Wow, where to begin. Since my last post, Scott McClellan, whose job it was to stonewall and lie to the media, accused those same media of being "too deferential" to his lying ex-bosses – you know, the ones he used to lie for as an auxiliary backup liar when they were too busy destroying America and Iraq to lie for themselves. And then Jessica Yellin came along and said that her corporate bosses pressured her to be more pro-Bush and pro-war. (Yes, she subsequently tried to backtrack, but it was unconvincing and lame.)
McClellan described the symptom, and Yellin identified the disease.
And then Glennzilla hit it out of the park (yes, I totally abandoned my previous metaphor because I have no idea what the medical equivalent of a grand slam is). After documenting the pro-Bush political pressure on Katie Couric(!), and the politically-motivated firings of Ashleigh Banfield and Phil "I was counted as two liberals" Donahue, Glenn says:
This is nothing less than compelling evidence that… our media is anything but "free." Corporate executives continuously suppressed critical reporting of the Government and the war and forced their paid reporters to mimic the administration line. The evidence proving that comes not from media critics or shrill left-wing bloggers but from those who work at these news outlets, including some of their best-known and highest-paid journalists who are attesting to such facts from first-hand knowledge despite its being in their interests not to speak out about such things.
(…)
Network executives obviously know that these revelations are quite threatening to their brand. Yesterday, they wheeled out their full stable of multi-millionaire corporate stars who play the role of authoritative journalists on the TV to join with their White House allies in mocking and deriding McClellan’s claims. One media star after the next — Tom Brokaw, David Gregory, Charlie Gibson and Brian Williams, Tim Russert, Wolf Blitzer — materialized in sync to insist that nothing could be more absurd than the suggestion that they are "deferential, complicit enablers" in government propaganda.
(…)
….Unlike Yellin, Donahue and Banfield, nobody needed to pressure the likes of Williams, Gibson and Russert to serve as propaganda handmaidens for the White House. It’s what they do quite eagerly on their own, which is precisely why they’re in the corporate positions they’re in. They are smooth, undisruptive personalities who don’t create problems for their executives….
This is what I said in my very first post here at FDL, and what I’ve been saying at my place for over three years. The media are not pro-Republican because they’re incompetent, lazy, or intimidated (although they probably are all those things); they are pro-Republican because their corporate owners demand it. Because the GOP’s love of war, deregulation, and corporate welfare mean far more to the parent corporation’s bottom line than any extra revenue that might be earned through exceptional, or even competent, reporting and commentary.
Those who go with the corporate flow, the "smooth, undisruptive personalities who don’t create problems for their executives," get promoted in both senses of the word, while those who resist get replaced with someone more compliant. Yes, there are notable exceptions, like Keith Olbermann and the excellent Landay and Strobel at Knight-Ridder/McClatchy, but that’s what they are… exceptions. The majority of the establishment media whine that finding the truth wasn’t their job, or that it would have somehow been inappropriate to "debate" the administration a mere 12-18 months after 9/11. Right.
The media are in a very vulnerable position right now. If the American people finally recognize them as corporate shills, then the range of their propaganda catapults shrinks dramatically. That’s why McClellan and Yellin gellin’ like felons has them yellin’ and us kvellin’.

Rapid, hysterical transmutation of the media.
Hiya Eli!
jail ‘em all
The Great Karnak: Eli!!!
Hiya LS!
Thanks, dosido… I think.
My eyes are wellin’
I was enthusing about this line…
They’re smellin’.
Great post Eli. The question that still perplexes me is Brian Williams saying that he kept getting instant calls on his cell phone from the Pentagon whenever he said anything they didn’t like. I can’t imagine that there was anything he said that wasn’t along the party line, so what were they wanting? Was he supposed to set up a shrine to W on his newsdesk?
For some strange reason I’m now hungry for melon…
Is Scott McClellan officially a “rabid lamb”?
Brooks said SM’s book was banal, ridden with cliches, etc. but I didn’t hear these magic words. darn.
If the American people finally recognize them as corporate shills, then the range of their propaganda catapults shrinks dramatically.
And *that* is where Scotty might actually do his country a real service, by acknowledging and outlining just how the media was available for whoring with a simple phone call. Maybe he could even name names.
Ah, thanks. Yeah, it’s a key point, but sometimes I even forget it myself and find myself reacting as if the media’s foolishness isn’t deliberate.
I’m not sure its just about the bottom line. I actually think that the media is afraid to take a stand against the WH. …which begs the question just what the WH is doing behind our backs to cow the 4th estate into submission. Could they be outright blackmailing the networks with threats of de-credentialing? Could there even be secret national security-type orders we don’t know about? threats of politically motivated prosecution? I smell a deep rabbit hole here, and it leads to some very scary places.
Welch was proud to have personally cultivated Tim Russert from a “lefty” to a responsible representative of GE interests. Welch sincerely believed that all liberals were phonies. He took great pleasure in “buying their leftist souls”, watching in satisfaction as former Democrats like Russert and MSNBC’s Chris Matthews eagerly discarded the baggage of their former progressive beliefs in exchange for cold hard GE cash. Russert was now an especially obedient and model employee in whom the company could take pride.
http://www.glennston.com/antib…..verup4.htm
Yep. My theory that I’ve been posting today is Loyal Bushies are Protecting the Koolaid Dispenser called MSM.
My favorite flavor?: why Kristol Myth, of course.
Yeah, I thought that was pretty hilarious. Williams, Russert, Gibson, they’re *all* such anti-establishment rebels.
You da man!! Most excellent post, Eli.
Just completed the comment form at PBS for Washington Week. Very polite, specific critique of tonight’s show. What a bunch of shills. Raditz, Harwood and some dude from Slate. I’m very disappointed in Martha Raditz. She’s a good journalist who’s drunk a little too much of the Kool-Aid. Done some great stories but went with the administration flow on the occupation.
Maybe they are threatened with not having access to the prez and others. If they all refused to go along, the prez could end up on Spike.
Oh, well… Now I know it’s so… Ask the man who KNOWS about banal, cliche-infested writing…
I was just looking for that link – thanks.
That would be pretty awesome if he heard some “we need to lean on this guy” conversations, or better yet, participated in them.
Yep. I as well have been saying for years that the mainstream media are simply the marketing division of the corporations that own America’s government.
If I have to thank a weasel like Scott McClellan for finally pointing out this elephant in the living room, so be it. Maybe people will finally get it through their thick skulls that the news isn’t the news and hasn’t been the news for years, and that the reason the world sucks as badly as it does is because our government has been bought by the wealthy corporate owners.
Now if we can get about the task of taking back Congress and re-introducing some goddamned regulations on these avaricious, self-perpetuating corporate empires, maybe we can hope to some day re-establish the Rule of Law…
So are we ready to acknowledge that the Democratic party is so ineffective and wimpy because Dems and Republicans are just two faces of one big monolithic… no? Too much too fast?
Don’t worry, we’ll get there…
Blub: yep, yep, and yep. Welcome to my world.
Ain’t that the truth, Eli!
Did you read his critique of Gore’s Assault On Reason? Epically obtuse – he would quote some perfectly lucid passage and then pretend Gore was speaking some kind of alien language. Although to Brooks, I guess he was.
And why none of the MSM are discussing the Generals for the Pentagon issue.
However, my personal koolaid drinker who I no longer cohabitate with, thank god, will repeat whatever the right wing pundits say because By God, they’re right so he’s right. And it’s more important to Be Right (according to your gang) than to Do the Right Thing (according to your conscience).
I’m pretty sure I’ve suggested that too, simply because it gets to a point where you think no-one could seriously be that stupid or that weak.
Why would they expose the teat they were suckling at for so long…?
Thank you Jeebus for the Tubes.
The Tubes have saved us.
The Tubes and Jeebus saves!!!!!!
Yep; credibility is their most precious resource, and the Pentaganda story is a huge threat to it.
Epimenides of Knosso, 608 B.C. : All Cretans are liars.
Bobo of Bethesda, 2008 A.D. : There is no White House noise machine.
You can be “right” or you can be happy. You can’t be both.
I married Mrs Right. I just didn’t know her first name was Always.
How’s about wiretapping?
pretend Gore was speaking some kind of alien language. Although to Brooks, I guess he was.
The alien language being maybe “lucidity”?
You know, *spaghetti* looks an awful lot like tubes – perhaps they are actually the manifestations of FSM’s Noodly Appendages?
Huh, hadn’t thought of it that way. Shaping up as kind of a perfect storm for propaganda exposure, ain’t it? Between Retired-Generals-Gate and Scotty-Gate, I mean.
Yep – Pelosi’s “impeachment is not on the table” comment was particularly telling.
We need to acknowledge that democracy is made of more than one establishment monoculture with two faces putting on a show of partisanship. (Not that I doubt the truly partisan devotions of many of its members, but they’re part of a single system.) It’s about time we encouraged third parties, and instituted IRV.
But I’m a crazy dreamer…
“My Questions For Obama
The brightest and best of the presidential hopefuls seeks to extend a cruel, immoral Cuba blockade
By Fidel Castro
29/05/08 “The Guardian” — – It would be dishonest of me to remain silent after hearing Barack Obama’s speech delivered at the Cuban American National Foundation last Friday. I feel no resentment towards him, for he is not responsible for the crimes perpetrated against Cuba and humanity. Were I to defend him, I would do his adversaries a favour. I have therefore no reservations about criticising him and expressing myself frankly.
http://www.nicaliving.com/node/12292
LOL.
I’m too lazy to look it up, plus resisting the temptation to blogwhore *my* critique of Brooks’s critique, but I think the passages he quoted were about the democratization of discourse, so that it wouldn’t be solely under the control of out-of-touch elitists like, well, Bobo.
what media?
The media and its high paid journalists are basically republican bots because they are with the right wing program. They are using their position to promote their own “greedy” self interest and this IS the republican way ME ME ME and screw you.
These people don’t have to be bribed or cajoled to spout propaganda, they spout it because they believe it and it serves their interests.
When GE owns NBC you can expect a pro war pro biz slant on the “news”. You don’t expect them to bite the hand that feeds?
Maybe they just threaten to withhold their part of the booty from the big robbery. It must be nice to have the press in your pocket when you’re committing such a huge crime.
Bobo is such a dull tool… If you want a very special bit of horror check out his conversation with La Collins… I’d suggest hip waders and noseclips… The comments are also interesting. There are apparently people who think these 2 are clever and funny and informative and just TEH AWESOME. And this thing is billed as “the first.” Oh, gosh… I can barely wait…
It is a journalism disease coming out of school they get assignments, they know the big media corporations want drones. So if thwy have to much ideal they leave and go to work for weeklies. I have seen it happen locally, they file good stories the editoers spin it with a differnet title and cut it. it is strange it is the spinsters that make it.
Noodly appendages with cheese.
How many new organizaations (reports) got a little Anthrax in the mail along with Leahy and Daschle for notgoing along with the Bush Admin and the
Patriot Act. KO also got some in the mail. They gave up pretty easy tho didn’t they.
Some very interesting thoughts here, especially if you think about them in terms of the warrantless wiretapping program. Think Qwest and Joseph Naccio. Think about how NSL’s don’t allow the recipient to say anything to anyone about having it; they just have to do what the gummint says. Seems to me that they could have had Yoo sprinkle some pixie dust and come up with “emergency orders” to the networks to catapult the propaganda.
The only response is to trebuchet the truth.
Its painful.
What is truly painful is how those execs self-justify. Internally they think that they are in it for the short haul, their organizations can’t make a dent on the grand American enterprise and once they are out they will charge the castle.
Its kinda like Scotty, actually. But here is the thing. They ALL think that.
The senders or receivers gave up?
Apparently, KO just got mad.
707… I’m probably letting us girls down, but 707!!
I sure wish someone had posted a youtube of Williams saying that.. If it’s on youtube, I can’t find it.
Who called him and what did they say? This is probably a part of the same pentagon plan which briefed generals before they went on talk shows and other interviews.
trebuchet
My husband has a trebuchet fetish.
Don’t ask.
Hey, it works both ways. We live in a dualistic universe.
My guess is that Jeebus and the FSM sit around and have a great noodly time together.
I’m a Verdana or Garamond guy myself.
I think the stuff is still out there as a threat. And you guys are right about the NSA’s and wthe wiretapping. You just don’t know anymore.
I’m sure. Jesus sounds like a pretty good guy. His message was basically “Be excellent to each other”, but it seems to have gotten lost in translation for a lot of people.
What does he knock down with them?
I think Pelosi’s “Impeachment is off the table” comment was political. I think she was making it politically comfortable for people to vote for democrats. If the groundswell continues to mount, I doubt Pelosi would have a minute’s trouble putting it right back on the table.
She was/is right. If the republicans win again, it’s over.
Hope she writes a book in a few years.
My gut instinct is that the threat of loss of access isn’t enough here. Any mainstream press organization that actually losses access to the WH press pool would be able to take the banishment straight to the bank (and onto the air). I think Loo Hoo’s idea is probably closer to the truth.. wiretapping leading to fodder for blackmail, who knows what shrub has the intelligence apparatus doing.
Worse, there might even be secret national security orders directing the press not to report on certain things.. now that would really scare ‘em. This is what the communist Chinese do, except that its done in the open.. their press (even the state owned entities) are surprisingly aggressive up until their government issues a formal order instructing them to stop reporting on something or to report on it in a certain way. That order is legally binding (and often issued publicly), so they comply, of course… although, interestingly, some outlets have started to actually print those orders in some type of passive-aggressive tactic.. as in “We can’t report on this anymore… so instead we’re printing the order directing us not to).
I used to think we were better than governments like that.. I’m not too sure anymore.
I am convinced that Palatino was good for at least an extra third of a grade on every paper, maybe more.
Although sometimes I had to use Times or New York to make length if I was too wordy or not wordy enough…
LOL707
I was wondering how much access Landay & Strobel had. Did they even go to press briefings?
Hiya Eli.
Or, as Arandhati Roy put it in 2003, “If there is one thing that has come out clearly recently, it is not that the corporate media supports the global corporate project; it IS the global corporate project”
It’s at 1:50 of this video, which Glenn dissected fully.
Hiya siri.
My guess is they talked to the people who knew what was going on. Lower level folks who did the grunt work and nobody pays any attention to. Old time journalism.
Times sucks (both the font and the paper). Palatino is good. I prefer Garamond, though, for mainstream serif faces, just a tad more elegant.
Thanks!
Marion, I’ve noticed before that you don’t like Gail. (I cannot stand Brooks), but I do enjoy Gail, and I curious about why you don’t like her.
Ohhhh… Palatino… My absolute favorite!
Oh, my.
My gut instinct is that the threat of loss of access isn’t enough here. Any mainstream press organization that actually losses access to the WH press pool would be able to take the banishment straight to the bank (and onto the air).
I think maybe you’re leaving out the enormous egos of the individual reporters. The “White House Correspondent” is by definition The Big Dog at a given network, (save for the anchor of the evening news). I have no problem with the proposition that those individual reporters aren’t giving up their seat in the WH briefing room easily, if at all.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that was it as well. Terribly unglamorous.
A bit like taking out the Death Star via an obscure utility duct.
The thing is, Landay & Strobel are good, but I don’t believe they have superhuman reporting powers – they just had the desire, *and* the permission to chase this stuff down.
GE to sell household appliance div.
I read elsewhere that a Turkish company is a possibility…
(snipt)
avant garde!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bauhaus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s not hard to bully and threaten people believably, and subtly. No one wants to lose a really good job like these guys have. Just threaten loss of access, and bingo, people become very compliant.
I have many hundreds. 99% of which totally suck and I never use them.
Been using Papyrus of late for some artsy stuff.
She’s not as bad as MoDo, and she has settled down some since they brought her back. When she was still behind the firewall she was, in my opinion, and YMMV, worthy of being called The Odious Ms. Collins. I did notice a shift in her stuff after the firewall came down, but I’ve got a LOOOONG memory… One of the things that irritates me is that she is a skilled writer and an astute observer of the political scene and could be doing so much better. I’m getting cranky in my old age!
Make the distinction between reporters and editors. At the Libby trial the reporters I talked with were eager to get the story, only to be repeatedly crushed and mangled by their editors. And even when they managed to get something good into print, the headline took all the power out of the story.
I’m seriously bummed at this bit of news
Yahoo’s frontpage now has a link to CNN “reporting” that says in the headline and several times in the copy, “Obama’s pastor apologizes…”
They’re talking about about this latest guy. How in the hell could a writer sit and call a one day guest pastor when Obama wasn’t there “Obama’s pastor?!?” It’s all so blatant.
And it has been for years. I used to work in Conglomerate Media in the 1990s, and have been trying to educate people about the deliberate deception from up top ever since. Thanks for keeping on this issue!
I was at a station at one point that was taken over by Fox. Our content changed overnight, and we started to get a morning fax for “suggested” stories for the day…From corp headquarters in Los Angeles!! We had to have a damn good reason for deviating from the script written for us by people thousands of miles away.
And why are you not up top clicking on the “Support This Site” link?!?!
art is my life. too bad it don’t pay.
You raise some really good points here. I never understood that whole wiretapping/verizon/att thing, in terms of what the WH did to get them to go alone with spying on us all (and I do believe it was more than just promising them immunity.. there had to have been a stick too, and you may very well be right that the same stick (or one similar to it) is being used on the press. Wow. If a fraction of these paranoid (?) thoughts are true, Scotty’d better start looking into political asylum somewhere where they’d give him a battalion of two of burly bodyguards.
You can’t sell household appliances after a bust out, but you can still sell plenty of jet engines, las bombas and other corporate welfare items to the Federal Government.
Like I said, old time journalism. These guys aren’t making beaucoup bucks doin’ this stuff. They’re almost like the reporters we see in the films from the 40’s and 50’s. Smell a good story and go after it. They’d be smart to stay right where they are. If McClatchy can make a go of it long term.
Ha! Me too, but I enjoy reading her. Didn’t notice her much behind the firewall when I subscribed for a short while.
and today eli, YOU hit it out of the park
the corporate media is not republican, they are not concervative, they are not liberal
THEY ARE CORPORATE with a corporate agenda
period
SOMETIMES that agenda happens to be “liberal”, MOST of the time corporate agenda is “concervative” and “republcan”
the agenda belongs to WHOEVER the corporations are sponsoring, REGARDLESS of policy
when the democrats have complete power, THEY will be corporate as well
WE MUST HAVE PUBLIC FINANCING OF CAMPAIGNS
if we cannot prevent corporate sponsorship of our politicians (and therefore our law), then contributions MUST BE KEPT SECRETLY DONATED
a corporation can NEVER let known to who they contribute and their donations MUST be NON deductable.
we CANNOT allow corporations the ability to buy our politicians, our government or our law
WE CANNOT
I was a musician for 21 years before becoming a White Collar.
Q: How do you make a million dollars in music?
A: Start out with at least two million dollars.
Q: What’s the definition of an “optimist”?
A: A musician with a mortgage.
That’s another favorite of mine! (Used to be a typesetter… and I have favorites!)
Yeah, Papyrus is good.
right. and a few things stand out to me.
1. An American brand is really an international conglomerate.
2. NBC is running at a loss and Immelt wants to hang onto it. Suspicious when GE is run as a “rank and yank” company.
Well, I think it depends. Some reporters are hemmed in and managed by their editors, but others clearly embrace their role with gusto.
sorry o/t
anyone else offended that the DNC rules committee is going to be protested by HRC fans?
I guess what I am offended by is that after seven rule breaking years of Bush, HRC wants to break her own rules of her own party. it bugs me.
Yep, bolsters my point that profits (or rather, *news* profits) are a distant second as far as a news management objective.
You mean these peeps: http://www.womencountpac.com/Site/about_us.html
Another person who doesn’t believe that the rules apply to her. Really sad.
i LOVE “angel in the morning”
just call me angel, in the moninnnng, annnngelll, JUST cross my iiiiiiiis before you leeeaavvveee mmeeee, baaabeeee
oh my gawd, I LOVE both versions of that song
DO A REPRISE!
going for a drive
*waiting for autographed copy of angel in the morning to arrive first class*
I played that song some nights with a BAC that started with an integer.
As I recall.
Could be she’s playing hard to get in order to fill her dance card. Tho’ advertising has taken a massive hit, like everything else does after a bust out.
One of my friends was a really strong Hillary supporter but no more. she thinks hil is off her rocker and “obsessed”. but the rules thing is what gets me.
what’s that about hell hath no fury?
Ron was almost famous. Was a rock n roll drummer for a group in Illinois and there abouts. They had a hit in the top ten in the mid 60’s. A trucking strike put an end to that. They were called The Herd. Then he played for a group call Steamin Freeman in San Fransico for several years. He plays the dige and the lap steel now. Slovak, too.
me-I sing. Off key I am told. Don’t care.
HRC wants to break her own rules of her own party. it bugs me.
But the “rules” are whatever most effectively benefit Hillary Clinton. Just ask her. Thus, it is logically impossible for her to break them.
It’s a good gig.
We didn’t own the song. Merillee got royally screwed by her label on that whole deal. When she sued them, they iced her down, spiked her, and ruined her career.
as a guitarist you will LOVE this story
you will have to join to see the pictures though
BTW, Here’s Turd Blossom’s response, on Faux Spew, to Scottie’s book…! If ya dare…! ;-)
Sing it, brotha!
Although it’s not so much news managers that are the problem, since many have some sense of journalism, but they want to keep their high-paying jobs so they do what the Conglomerate owners tell them to do. It’s sorta like Pelosi and Reid…too chickenshit to stand up to the stringpullers and end up being enablers.
see all later, going for a drive
Wow. Those were the days.
Some of my old original tunes are here.
It was only the past few years I was able to watch the regular White House press briefings on-line, at which point I couldn’t help wondering why any reputable news organization wasted any of their top reporting talent on them. The simplest questions received rambling non-answers. If I had been an assignment editor, I would have only sent interns or newbie reporters to cover them, and would have tasked my best reporters to actually going after the news–clearly there wasn’t any news being generated by Scottie and his ilk.
So to blame McClellan because he wasn’t actually acting as a press secretary, but rather as a news suppressor begs the question. When it became clear there was no news in the White House briefing room, why didn’t reporters go elsewhere to gather it? Some, of course, did, such as the bright team from Knight-Ridder/McClatchy. But most sat there like idiots lapping up the Bush Administration’s visible contempt for them in some sort of sick effort to ingratiate themselves with Washington power.
It has was totally bizarre to watch, and has been equally bizarre to watch the media stars who fell down so badly on the job try to ineptly rationalize their incompetence in the wake of McClellan’s revelations. The Bush Administration bet the media’s incompetence and sycophancy would allow them to do what they wanted. They won; we lost.
I cannot watch that Rove fucker.
The more I see of her, each new day of her campaign, the more terrified I get at the prospects of her getting nominated. She scares me. That’s a long way from where I started as just a little uneasy, and not really trusting her completely.
The message comes from the top, and I’m sure it’s not homogenous how far down the buy-in goes, as opposed to just going-along-to-get-along.
Outa here. Some friends are gigging tonight.
Carry on, ‘pups.
rut-roh. Tornado sirens here…..
Angel of the Morning…
Stay safe!
Yeah, I read the occasional excerpt and I wonder what the value is when it’s clear that the penalty for revealing non-talking-point information is instant death.
Now, maybe if the news agencies could get some trained interrogators – not torturers, mind you, just really skilled interrogators – some one-on-one time with the various press secretaries…
funny thing is the guy is a catholic priest. this isn’t going to dog Obama (that is if people take the time to read the WHOLE story)This is just a way for the right to go after his church as a whole. Here is an account by the woman who pastored the first service at the church (Pleger pastored the second)
oops. I meant to say :]
stay warm and dry and safe, jayt!
Yeeks! You’re havin’ a great party here, and I’m late! Hi, Eli and all the eli-ets and -ettes.
The “Black” church is threatening. Upitty. Angry. Wantin’ your money. Not knowing when to stfu. and most of all LOUD. Raucous.
Interesting article from 2003, which cites CNN journo Christiane Amanpour accusations about US press self-censorship
http://www.usatoday.com/life/c…..-mix_x.htm
Hi, barbara! That may be the most terrifying comment I’ve ever read…
My kind of people. Booyah!
707!!
exactly
egregious, I just love it when you say Fitz! Brings back the old days!
So they’re Republicans?
No. These folks know how to have fun and, and are life affirming. Life fucking affirming, dude.
Eeek! McCain laughing like Peter Lorre on my teevee when having his chops busted by an intrepid reporter who points out troops are NOT down to presurge levels…ouch!
Thanks for that link. Great insight there! Even mentions Rick Perlstein’s work.
I was beginning to worry for a bit that there were enough people who fall for the old tricks still, when the Rev Wright stuff seemed to effecting Obama’s numbers, but he and we were able to hold our ground. So now, I’m back to thinking it’s great to get all the sexism, racism, and all other -isms exposed. It needs to come to the fore in order to dismantle it and move forward. Onward and upward!
You made me do it!
Probably right now the Bushies are checking on Scott back to his kindergarten days, to see if he was kind to other children(surely a liberal sign), kind to small animals (very liberal), and smelled the flowers(f*cking liberal stinking hippie!).
That’s wonderful, but ain’t it kind of an outdated pleasure?
And hope that in the general all pastors, priests, and ministers from all religions simply keep their mouths shut so that we can get on with the business of running the country.
still, that was by far the strangest priest I’ve ever seen.
it is great. I’ve said before there needs to be a number of conversations about racism (sexism, etc.) We can’t be afraid to have these conversations any longer.
On one of my trips back from Russia I was trying to get some sleep during the long journey home, and there was this one woman who kept her light on all night to work. She was the only one in the entire cabin who wasn’t sleeping.
Getting off the plane, I saw it was Christiane Amanpour. THERE is a hardworking woman.
Scott’s auspicous beginnings
Since the Bushies have had The Book in their hot, smelly hands for over a month I am sure they have been searching for Scotty’s secrets high and low. I don’t think the boy has any. Except the gay part and that isn’t a problem any longer.
I think it was DH Lawrence that suggested that Christianity was too hard for people.
May she-who-must-be-shunned be forced to sit home on Inauguration Day and watch the new President Obama give an inspiring speech. After swearing-in on his Kenyan Catholic grandma’s Bible.
Fitz–the ultimate zed.
McClatchy–the alt zed.
Good to see the base camp back to normal after the afternoon’s tempest.
You notice how he really didn’t deny the facts…? Sure, blame me when I did post all the necessary disclaimers…! 8-P
And sending marching orders to Russet for MTP Sunday morning.
Rightio.
And I’ll never be able to get past Gregory dancing with Karl Rove. NEVER.
I don’t. if it weren’t for some ministers (MLK) where would many of the social issues (the civil rights movement) gain a voice in the greater society and the political process?
So true. I have nothing but admiration, bordering on awe, for New Testament Christians. And nothing but contempt for Old Testament Christians, who let their lizard brains frolic freely without let or hindrance.
Are you Okay?
Oh, I responded to your greeting downstairs.
EPU’d from downstairs:
Tudo bom. E você?
Of course, but we will never see the like of MLK again.
These ministers today are not helping IMO
There are some things that should never be made public. Like sex between three or four consenting adults on a stage at the WH reporters’ dinner thingie.
Oh, I’m certain Timmeh will spew all the WH TP’s… i.e. Why did you leave the reservation…? ad nauseum…!
We are of one mind.
Although if there are hearings on Capitol Hill, that may change? and/or keeping the story alive in the blogosphere.
…and a type of journo that’s become exceedingly rare these days.
That image and the one of Bush sayin’ he didn’t have a problem with dictatorships as long as he got to be dictator. Those are the bookends of the Bush years.
Hey, slightly OT, but Mr. Sunshine said to me the other day, y’know how Bush talked about seein’ into Putin’s soul…whaddya suppose Putin was seein’?
“Are you mentally insane, or merely disgruntled?”
Agreed. I think the Miami ministers group came up with wise counsel for tomorrow’s rules committee. Split the baby 50-50 so neither side is advantaged by the outcome, and the delegation is seated.
Cheney’s hand?
Putin was seeing nothing much. Vapors. He was witnessing vaporous bullshit in action.
I always assumed that they each saw their own reflection… give or take 40 or 50 IQ points.
all is well so far. Lotta wind, which is good. If there was gonna be a tornado, things would get real quiet for a while – that’s the time to start shitting nickels. Quite frankly, tornadoes scare the crap outta me – but I think everything’s fine – just hope the electricity doesn’t go out – lotta flickering….
Sort of hard to project/predict who may come and speak to and lend voice to the masses.
Yes, and pastoral leadership on social issues continues today. Check out the National Religious Coalition Against Torture, founded by George Hunsinger of Princeton Theological Seminary. It’s one of the leading voices against torture.
ad nauseum…!
as usual….
Heh, exactly…! ;-)
Scottie was answering questions on WP this morning. I asked him if the administration ever threatened the news media- and if so what the threats were- and if friends of the administration ever threatened the media with withdrawing advertising…
Unfortunately, he didn’t have time to get to my question.
vampires do not reflect. other than that, works for me.
No doubt!
I’ve never been so ashamed of my skin’s melalin level before that abomination. Damn, that was embarrassing.
Muito bem :)
according to Hugo Chavez, it was more of what was Putin smelling. Sulphur
That’s true but this whole thing make me sorta queasy. I really hate the idea of religion in politics and gov’t. Think it is very dangerous.
Where are you?
And there are the Methodist ministers protesting having the Bush propaganda factory on the campus of SMU.
I was in two tornadoes in Memphis. Hated it. Hurt my ears.
I was in a earthquake in Memphis right before moving to San Francisco. I haven’t been the same since and that was in 1974.
Sounds kinky. So falafel was served that night?
Gag.
Thanks for the update. I’d still stay away from the windows and work off battery if you’re on a laptop.
Oh, I’m certain Timmeh will spew all the WH TP’s…
Scotty will be fine as long as he remembers the secret handshake.
i’m impressed *g*
I like Keith Olbermann, but he’s not as much of an exception as I’d like him to be: he slavishly defends his parent company (MSNBC as well as GE) even when he shouldn’t.
It’s nice to hear him attack Fox, but when he attacked the courageous journalist John Hockenberry for his article on how GE shut him down when he tried to use GE’s business contacts to get access to the bin Laden family, Olbermann talked about Hockenberry in much the same way that the Bush administration now talks about Scott McClellan, practically calling him pathetic.
Olbermann hasn’t said word one about the sorry record of his own employer in the 2002-2004 time frame.
Hopefully on both.
That reminds me of falling out of the frying pan into the fire…! ;-)
I’d say split Michigan 50-50. Give Clinton a 2-1 advantage in Florida- then seat everybody.. That’s about how it would turn out if they voted right now.
OMG! A real journalist would answer that question!
I believe in th separation of church and state but I also believe that voices of reason/concern/conscious come form all segments of society
And let me expound a little…
I was raised in the snake handling branch of Christianity. Pentecostal. And I delighted once when I saw in a popularization of Science magazine (can’t remember its name now) referring to the snake handlers as the canary in the mine. At the time I was sitting in the pews and the message was “governmit” is not necessarily our friend. HIDE YOUR BIBLES!
What I think has happened is we (US) are on some sort of weird “comfort” track. Weird because most of the advanced world is leaving us in the dust. Its kinda like we have become enamored of our laurels.
Where are you?
Indianapolis. I can see the cathedral two blocks over again now – I think it’s all good.
Well sure. Return love for hate? Bless those who would persecute you? Pray for those who would rather see you harmed? Not so easy.
I naively took this literally and prepared to work with our enemy, the former Soviet Union. There were many who tried to thwart this work but we persevered in order to save lives and try to create a new kind of understanding between our nations.
Now as to forgiving and working for reconciliation with people in THIS country who have done me/us harm? Yes, I am struggling with that as well. Not so easy but very important.
We are all human beings, we need to look for our common ground, and reach out to those who we see have fallen from reality. Need to walk with them from where they are lost in error to the new place where they experience both truth and safety.
A lot of people’s resistance to coming forward with the truth is that they are afraid. We can be there for them as they become brave to speak.
Fingers crossed, jayt.
Has anyone noticed that KKKarl Rove can’t pronounce “Noo-KLEE-uhr”, either?
Yep, he’s another “Nook-Yoo-Luhr” asshole… Must be a Texas thing, although, I know George the lesser is not originally from Texas, but i don’t know about Satan’s spawn.
Anybody?
I think there’s a mentality that we simply *are* America, and don’t need to make any kind of proactive effort to *stay* America.
Good for you for asking…
Julia has Late Nite upstairs!
Late Night FDL: the price of forgiveness
Pretty much. Was in the 1989 quake, too. And a major flood, a hurricane (Betsy) and life in general. I hate being parked under a freeway waiting for the light to change in Cali. It is the short version of waiting for the Bullshit Bushies to be over.
Hope y’all are safe there. We had some nastiness in MN a few days ago, and some ugly lookin’ stuff passed over tonight, too. I think Thor is pissed!
It is a cultural thing. The dark culture of rejects from Soggy Bottom.
no, it’s just dumbass disease. It is no respecter of location and can strike anywhere and anyone
Wiki says he was born in Denver and early-raised in Nevada.

Eventually, Rover moved to Salt Lake City. But I loved this tidbit:

Please, tell us more about what your religion taught, and how you came to question it.

Just wanna make sure I won’t be afflicted
Wait

hehehe he got beat up by a girl. good. I hope she opened a can of whoop ass on him. that must have been the day that he realized that he would have to use his head because his body would never be on any service
I don’t have a problem with them being there. It’s allegedly a free country.
I’m wondering if anyone on the RBC is going to stand up and say, “Hey look, both of these candidates agreed to the rules in 2007. Regardless of how the Dems in either legislature voted the Dems in those legislatures knew the rules at the time they voted. Do the rules mean anything or do we change them midstream because the states believe they can ignore the rules at their convenience.”
If the RBC, and by extension the DNC, doesn’t enforce the rules as previously agreed to by all candidates, not only Obama and Clinton, what effect will that have on future campaigns?
I like knowing what the rules of the game are and if I have agreed to them I have a responsibility to abide by them. ymmv.
I just was the 7th Digg.
What’s wrong with THAT picture?
hehe
thanks.
*giggle*
Your no dumbass
Your all ethical and stuff
…more like *dont give a fuck disease*

We’re supposed to get that same storm at about 3 a.m.
Be well, Jay.
I think that is more a symptom or at the most, a secondary infection
Ooooh, that means pus and stuff.
*gags*
they stand at the edge of a stagnant pool and when they see their reflection they’re fulfilled
(bows) Konnichiwa, Wobbs
I can’t help it. Real drag, ain’t it? Drives me nuts.

Our NSA handlers had Grammar sent heat away. They kept eating all the fat pills.

Sheesh.
I do know the difference. Just made a mistake.
But if it will relieve your anal retention:
You’re (You are) all ethical and stuff.
155,000, not 130,000 pre surge troops in Iraq. He does provide a steady stream of material for the Utube!
forgot the *g*
that’s better
I noticed my comment had a bit of a hard edge and that certainly was not my intent
wobbly… you needn’t worry about my fragile sensibilities – I know where your heart is.
By the way, how’s weebits?
The battle among the big network anchors was a bake sale compared to the battle among the big networks’ embedded correspondents. And how about them authentic duds.
weebits is great. She just started playing a lot today. She ran around on the bed for about 15 minutes (wore herself out). She is asleep inside mr’s sweatshirt at the moment but should be up and yowling within the next hour.
Do we know she’s a she, or are we just assuming?
just curious
Females tend to be a bit more aloof than males.
…in felines, that is
;~P
she’s all nipply (*g*). definitely a girl.
Sweet little ones at that age don’t “yowl”, they “converse”
…and make a lot of noise
…and poop
…and sleep
…and poop some more
You know the drill by now.
That I do. You can now add ‘play’ to the equation.
I’ll come upstairs now, If y’all will let me.
I promise to behave
That way you don’t have to keep runnin up & down the stairs. What with weebits and all, you’re (proper usage) probably pooped (pardon the pun)
;~P
c’mon up
oh… and I gots nipples, too.
don’t be too sure
*in honor of Mr. Bob Barker* “Be sure to have your pet spayed or neutered.”
Eli, god bless you. But “corporate (fucking) executives”??? I want names. Goddamn them, I want to see their names in the public record. (No, damnit, I’m not screaming at you; it’s the same everywhere: faceless, nameless corporate fucking executives. But it’s got to stop.)
He’ll have the perfect chance on MTP this Sunday. Something along the lines of “Hey Timmeh! You hear from Cheney lately?”
