The generous impulse is creditable, but I’m not sure the reality supports it. The conservative movement, and with it the wingnut welfare machine, is already retooling for a post-Dubya world. While they can’t wholeheartedly and unanimously repudiate him yet, both beause he can still retaliate, and because you can’t turn the aircraft carrier of propaganda quite on a dime, at some point the party line is going to have to solidify behind the idea that Dubya failed conservatism rather egregiously.
