It is a very difficult battle to figure out who is the worst editorial columnist in the country. I mean, any fair battle excludes anyone published at "Townhall.com" because you cannot ask the remedial reading class to compare their SAT scores with the rest of the students.
But of the rest, it is a group of serious contenders: Maureen Dowd's viewing life as a perpetual junior prom and she's the dateless yearbook editor; Fred Hiatt's anonymous war fantasies; Bill Kristol's column every Monday apologized for every Tuesday; Charles Krauthammer's theory of providing disaster relief for Burma by bombing Iran; and, of course, Tom Friedman's "one-named service industry employee he recently talked to who magically thinks and speaks like Tom Friedman" column.
But, if I had to pick one person for consistent services in the name of mediocrity, it would have to be America's Concern Troll, Richard Cohen.
And this week, Dicky, has whipped out a column full of douchified banality:
Obama represents a constituency that holds that much of the world's troubles are caused by the United States and can be rectified by a president who is alert to cultural nuance and can be a keen listener. This is the world according to Oprah Winfrey.
How inspiring, in 2008, a self-proclaimed "liberal" (emphasis on self-proclaimed) is spouting Dick Nixon's phony-talking points from 40 years ago.
Classy. Give that wanker a raise!
We can never indicate we are open to actually talking to people we do not like because...
[W]hen a president sits down with an antagonistic foreign leader, doing so can only be to settle what has already been settled. Negotiations can be a dangerous business, especially when one negotiator has a free and rambunctious press to goad him into compromises while the other is covered by suitably intimidated sycophants.
Yes, like the American press, especially Richard Cohen goaded Bush into compromises?
"So it was particularly shocking, not to mention refreshing, to hear Richard Perle on Sunday call Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) a liar to his face."
Kucinich, of course, was arguing against the invasion of Iraq because he was unpersuaded on the issue of WMD's and believed the Bush Administration was motivated by illegitimate motives and foolishly plunging the country into a needless war. Boy, no wonder that guy has gotten so marginalized. We cannot allow this kind of accuracy from people the press is determined to make into a walking joke.
And, of course, Richard Perle has never been wrong about anything...right?
And, Dicky Cohen, was totally not goading Bush into compromise, he was totally not some uncool AV Geek like Dennis Kucinich, because just nineteen days before the above he had written:
This is where Colin Powell brought us all yesterday. The evidence he presented to the United Nations -- some of it circumstantial, some of it absolutely bone-chilling in its detail -- had to prove to anyone that Iraq not only hasn't accounted for its weapons of mass destruction but without a doubt still retains them. Only a fool -- or possibly a Frenchman -- could conclude otherwise.
Oh, the almost witty turn of a phrase.
For many people being so foolishly wrong about the monstrosities of war and peace such things would come back to haunt them and be a permanent stain...like Lindbergh in Des Moines.
But not when you are cheering a war on...rather than goading for compromise. Then there is no punishment at all. Richard Cohen still draws a copious paycheck for his ineptitude. Failure is rewarded, as long as you cheer for the bombs to fall.

Good thing you started another thread.
you better jump back and delete me again
Yeah, it’s all about you, Raven.
Hmmm… What was going on in the previous thread? Here at work the continuation/comments page was blocked by whatever nannyware we have loaded as “offensive or obscene.” Don’t tell me somebody used a naughty word…
Yeah, no lie. Who/what was/is that person?
I’m not talking to you.
JoFish: I don’t even know. I can just tell that somebody got his hand spanked and now he’s the biggest victim of anything, evah.
Raven: take it to e-mail then and don’t burden the rest of us with your drama.
Send me your address
Good morning folks.
Please keep the discussion from the previous thread on the thread where it started.
Thanks.
So Attaturk you are setting yourself up for a lifetime’s work. It is disheartening to even start the count of pathetic pudits let alone come up with the absolute worst. However I think the study of the phenomenon could/should be called Sphincterology.
more fools and less cohen, please.
The world of pundits needs a Bill James. I think we can safely assume that the good Mr. Cohen will come in well below the Mendoza line.
What about Joke Line? I think he belongs in the running…
I had to laugh when I saw this post because I made an uncomplimentary comment on Cohen’s opinion piece this morning. LOL
time for a spotlight?
Richard Cohen is a very wealthy person who writes for other very wealthy persons. People who are not wealthy don’t matter. Once you understand that, you understand his writing.
Cohen has long been the guy most likely to take MoDo to that prom, where they can both sit around and bandy snarky witticisms at the other kewl kidz, not realizing that the only reason they ended up with each other was that they both had metaphorical “kick me” signs on their backs for most of their lives.
The man defines the word “asshat”.
LOL Here is my moment in the spotlight. LOL

After reading this column and some of Mr. Cohen’s other recent columns I’ve come to the sad conclusion that he writes these absurd opinion pieces not because he really believes what he’s writing but because he’s out of real ideas and thinks he has to write controversial pieces in order to generate web traffic to his articles in order to keep his job.
Because of this I think the Post needs to seriously consider putting Mr. Cohen and the Post’s readers out of their misery by replacing him with another columnist. There are plenty of fantastic writers on the internet who can contribute honest ideas and observations that boost web traffic in a positive way. So there is no reason the Post or it’s readers have to settle for second rate opinion pieces like the ones that Mr. Cohen habitually writes at the Post.

Not mention rewarded special-much if you are well invested in manufacturers of said bombs (and tanks, and guns, and planes etc…)
My spouse’s morning radio show (which I cannot stand) is spending much of its time this morning analyzing the taped jailhouse calls between Hulk Hogan, his wife, and their son, whose drunk driving incarceration results from the son having driven drunk and left his best friend brain dead.
The focus of the hosts is on the extreme narcissism of all involved. Hulk Hogan’s only thought is on how to make a reality TV show out of this. His wife claims that SHE is suffering more than the victim’s mother.
Makes me wonder if narcissism is contagious, spread by wealth. I want to call their show and ask what they think of our president and vice president.
He is an asshat.
Hulk Hogan’s wife is similar to how Laura Bush said that nobody suffers more from the Iraq occupation more than her husband.
Well, I can think of a way to end poor W’s suffering. All the putz needs to do is BRING THE TROOPS HOME.
After adding Cohen’s name to the manifest, the Slow Boat to Haifa is filling up fast.
Daughter was involved in a crash yesterday. No injuries. The rich are victims of the DFH’s derision and scorn. Boo fuckin’ hoo.
I have not read Cohen lately. I can’t. Thank you for confirming that I am still justified in my beliefs that the man is a shill for the military industrial complex.
On another note, I believe I saw Chris Mathews on “Morning Joe” (which is occasionally watchable without Joe Scarborough); and, if I am not mistaken, he distinctly said something along the lines of, “America’s chickens have come home to roost,” with regard to the issues of dealing with Islamic Jihadists. Anyone else get that?
Yeah.
Powell thought he was having his Adlai UN Moment.
Indeed.
He is writing what he is told to write and what he writes is exactly what the hegemony needs, or thinks they need, for consumption by ‘the people’. This ‘product’ is not fabricated to ‘inform’ or ‘educate’ the ‘people’ rather the opposite. In short, it’s propaganda and serves our rulers well in that niche.
That it is so far removed from the reality that you and I live in is irrelevant for you see….
To our rulers and masters we are now irrelevant. Plans are now afoot to reduce the ‘excess’ population through economic collapse, famine and energy shortages. After all who needs an ‘autoworker’ if only .1 per cent of the ‘populace’ can afford a car.
The heretofore useful meme of ‘1984′ is being phased out in favor of something along the lines of ‘A Boy and His Dog’.
Time to stock up on the supplies and….
Be sure and lay in a lot of ammo.
History will ultimately judge Powell do be simply a Bush toady.
I missed the Matthews segement this morning because I had the TV on mute to hear a video on the internet. I can’t stand hearing Scarborough and lately I feel the same way about Mika Brezinski. I cringe everytime she opens her mouth.
Wow, only on FDL can you get a pre-Miami Vice, Don Johnson reference this early in the morning.
There needs to be a “Hall of Infamy” of big media — A permanent website.
A photo (that goofy Cohen hairdo is perfect) with quotes like Attaturk cited:
“This is where Colin Powell brought us all yesterday. The evidence he presented to the United Nations — some of it circumstantial, some of it absolutely bone-chilling in its detail — had to prove to anyone that Iraq not only hasn’t accounted for its weapons of mass destruction but without a doubt still retains them. Only a fool — or possibly a Frenchman — could conclude otherwise.”
Indexed so you could tell your friends and repugs how to easily discover what the Times and Post etc. are like in a nutshell (hmm, nutshell)
I’d send a few dollars to support it. Firepups?
The column Cohen should have written. You know there are these labels that fly around the media. Once someone acquires one they have it forever. So for example McCain is a maverick and a straightshooter no matter how often he shows himself to be an arch conservative flip flopper. The same is true with Cohen. He is a liberal not because he has liberal beliefs but because he has the label. What he is in fact is another Borderite goof, an Establishment enabler who OD’ed on cocktail weenies and the Koolaid long ago, in other words what Glenn Greenwald calls a Very Serious Person.
And there you have the supremely ignorant Richard Cohen in a nutshell: The guy takes the word of a key PNAC Platoon bullcrapper over that of UNMOVIC and the IAEA and pretty much anyone else with a clue who wasn’t being paid to lie.
but. . .but . . . Attaturk!, what about Michael The Surge Was The Right Thing to Do O’Hanlon ???
Ding, ding, ding.
No, Powell like many others in the Bush ‘administration’ will be labeled a war criminal. Further, the likes of PIssant Yoo can crank out all the incompetent ‘memos’ he and Addington can produce and it will not alter the fact that there is zero difference between Hitler’s invasion of Poland and our nation’s invasion of Iraq.
For which all the citizens, you….me….Miss Nancy…’SellOut’ Reid…your grandmother…my cousin, all bear responsibility. Shoving it all off on the likes of Sec of State ‘My Lai’ Powell, NSA Condi-Lies-a-Lot and Mr. Decider does not and will not absolve yours and my responsibility in this matter.
Unless or until we lock these criminals away for the rest of their lives we are just as guilty as they are. Given the current love affairs with McSame and Barry the Incompetent One I am not optimistic this will ever happen.
But the Decider’s purchase of that ranch in Paraguay give me some cause for hope.
Just keep in mind one thing. The American people have yet to recieve the bill for the Decider’s excellent adventure.
$8.00 gal. gas? Some sites are now talking $14….
Inflation? Try stagflation…
I doubt me our economy, based on endless war as it is, can throw 4 or 5 Trillion down the magic rat hole in Iraq and not have the people suffer for it.
If $14.00/gal or even $8.00 comes…..
This country will explode.
I just spotlighted this post.
This is so important, because Obama’s approach to foreign policy will get attacked from all sides. The jingoistic mentality of the last 7.5 years has saturated the American conciousness. It’s going to be difficult to re-educate the general populous. I hope the Obama campaign is up to the task. I guess the best way to communicate the message is to say “look over here - we have failure. Let’s try a different way.” Being smart does not equal being weak. I’m not sure that fits on a bumper sticker.
Bit cranky this am I admit.
Powell will be labled as Bush’s Joachim von Ribbentrop. It didn’t end well for Ribbentrop and it won’t, if there is any justice in the world, end well for Powell.
From the FDL newsbox there is an AP story on the resignation of the Canadian Foreign Minister for leaving sensitive documents at the residence of a former girlfriend Julie Couillard who had had previous relationships with Hells Angels motorcycle gang members. I don’t know if I am the only francophone here but I find that name hysterical especially in the context.
Wow, that’s scary. So, if I understand, Hillary the Competent (Is that the correct sobriquet?) is the only one who can save us all and absolve us. Failing that, it looks like hira kiri is the only honorable course.
Change that to last 45 years…….

If Cohen were given the Heimlich manuever either a cocktail weenie or piece of Bush’s cock would be dislodged from his throat.
-G
What’s the difference?
it is simply amazing, these fools have been nothing but wrong, nothing but inept, yet they make believe they’ve gotten everything right
ah, the american press
Why do we even read Cohen?
He peaked when he got to screw with Peter Jennings’ wife, it’s all been downhill since.
Christy has a new post up and ready for anyone who’s interested on “The Other PTSD”!
Did someone just slip a Driftglass article in under Attaturk’s byline? (That’s a very high compliment, BTW)
Well said.
Prior to my first whiff of Cohen, I could only obtain such a level of profundity and class by kicking my Bean-O addiction and letting one rip.
When will the hacks and shills of the corporate media be held accountable? When will they lose their 7 figure salaries? When will they be cancelled from the rubber chicken lecture circuit? When will some be charged with conspiracy? Enough of these bloviating rich whinny bastions of the status quo. Knock them off their gilded pedestals.
Why oh why didn’t Cohen take the WaPo buyout? The world could have been a much better place. His asshattery never ceases to amaze.
The good news is that most of the American electorate don’t read these folks regularly. The bad news is that many watch those 30-second market tested ads designed to tell you absolutely nothing.
She’s an ex-model. I suppose it goes with the territory. The story is actually interesting, though we were in Italy when most of it happened. Seems that word of her ‘mauvaises frequentations’ got out and points were raised in question period. The PM and his acolytes defended to the teeth the ‘private life’ of his Minister and the minister’s assigns. But the heat got too hot. Minister dumps babe; the babe, who is definitely not one in the woods, has a copy of a confidential memo concerning the government’s (favorable) stance towards getting the Ukraine into NATO. She informs the press, tries to sell her story. The rest is history.
Moral of story: always clear really important things with your mistress first.
