Late to the thread, but here’s my two cents:

As a newswatcher, I thought McCain’s “release” of his medical records was pure bullshit. If you don’t actually release the medical records, then the NYT should have the good sense not to use the word “release” to describe the event. Their headline would have been much more accurate if it said, “John McCain Deliberately Withholds Medical Records From the NYT.”

As a physician (but not a psychiatrist or a geriatrician), the biggest red flag for me was that his spokeswoman says he hasn’t had any psychiatric care for the years in question. Excuse me? This man was tortured in a POW camp for YEARS. If I were his doctor, I’d tell him that he needs to see a psychiatrist once a year, no matter how good he’s feeling, just to make sure he’s doing okay. I would NOT take his word for it that he’s “fine”, and I sure as hell wouldn’t be writing out prescriptions for powerful psychotropic drugs.

kirk–my 149

something else just occurred to me that bothers me.

i brought up the infinite combinations of brain function/medication and how it affects your daily decision making and functioning.
that getting the combination right can be a problem……..

but something you are raising is raising another question besides that——

how if you do have a mental illness, isn’t that like diabetes? isn’t that what you guys are wanting people to accept?

that when you can get the right combo of illness and medication it’s like having high blood pressure?

yet, i’m hearing you say that no matter what, he’s flawed and unacceptable…….

well, which is it?

i’m seeing a shadow side to this, and don’t know if that’s something you meant to illustrate, but you are.
by taking mccain down, are you painting a portrait of mental illness you want portrayed?

i see a good combo of treatment and medication as being a good thing…..if he’s not doing that or getting that, than that is a mind not in combination with his emotions, tnt……

if he is, what are you trying to say isn’t ok with that? isn’t that the goal of any psychiatrist? to have a patient balanced in mind and emotion? and you of all people outta know how hard won of a battle that is to attain…

you really outta know that.

i do.

so, i’m seein’ both sides now.

the claim that McCain has some form of arthritis that derives from the physical abuse

I assume you’re talking about the apparent stiffness in his arms. When his plane took a SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) up it’s ass he crashed, breaking numerous bones. He was handled roughly by his captors, peasant rice farmers, followed by a period without treatment. Combined with his treatment later he has had increasingly limited ROM (Range of Motion) in both arms. In pictures taken after his release he can be seen with his right arm raised higher than he is able to raise it today. This condition is probably aggravated to some degree by arthritis.

loo hoo at 160–thanks, may the road rise to meet you…….may the wind be always at your back.

i’m in one of those artistic places that people wonder about-where artists ’go’………so, probably shouldn’t post, but what the hell—here ya go………am gonna go back to radio silence after this……..

absolutely mind-blowing week….

is proving my physics ’religion’ right—energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed

…i got pushed around when i didn’t deserve it, by two people i trusted, then i made it worse by reacting hurt, noone defended me, i decided for once that some people just gotta fall by the wayside……and i was gonna leave…..knowing i had a lot to offer that others didn’t even know i was doing in my private life, so be it….judge me without knowing me, first time the words ’your loss’ rang true and i felt bad about it…..then outta the blue people started ’giving’ me things back from things i had done for them, in my real life……i wish i could list it here, i can’t……..you wouldn’t believe the abundance i have had laid in my lap this week…….i paid it in part today by taking one of my friends out today ’catbirdin’ for plants, she had to put her dog down thursday…….spent the evening after with her and her husband in their gardens……

the ’episode’ made it concretely clear what i believe, what i stand for, what it measures against, what it means, who i am, where i’ve been and mostly, how i view the things that are unjust that have been aimed my way in my life…..that i’ve always been honest, and my motives have always been about the truth…….

like i said, every ten years or so you get this gift……..

so, i realized what i have in my hand is gold.

i know it, it’s pure, it’s the real deal. that i’m the real deal.

and anyone who wants to take what i say out of context is gonna get an emotional ranting explanation of what hit me so wrong, and that that is aok, cuz when you are misunderstood and you meant it in a good way, that’s what you do, you react in that way…..cuz i’m honest, and mean the best………and it’s a fine line between being ’good’ and being a patsy, so, you never quite get it right when you hafta be a fighter…..

and that i’m ok with that. cuz i already forgive, just keep on cuz i want my own truth to be forgiven too.
and that’s why this song is what i posted, cuz it’s what would work. oh well……. /personal rant/

If McCain survived five years in the Hanoi Hilton, the physical abuse must have been grueling and frequent. (If it wasn’t, the circumstances don’t bear contemplating.) Even if he’s exaggerate it over the years, as old warriors are wont to do, it must still have been brutal.

Hence, I took at face value the claim that McCain has some form of arthritis that derives from the physical abuse he suffered as a POW. A fact that suggests his judgment is complete out the window, given his avid support for BushCheney’s torture regime. Torture, IMHO, is now the principal trademark of the Republican Party, not just its president. Something the Democrats should not make light of.

oops - just saw your comment, earl. Waay up thread, ther ewere two separate comments setting forth (one as a hypothetical) that McCain had been inventing his histroy of torturre while a POW. That’s the only aspect of questioning him I take issue with.

Thanks, SD.

I’ve been very displeased to read the comments impugning McCain’s military service - and his suffering. Especially on Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks for your patience with those comments.

I don’t think anyone is impugning John McCain’s active military service, or belittling his accomplishments in surviving as a POW. McCain himself is inviting that criticism, however, in making his service record a constant shield for otherwise legitimate criticism of his political work. He thereby gets to defend himself with his strongest suit, while he avoidis responding to the underlying criticism of his political acts. A Beltway version of heads I win, tails you lose.

We are impugning McCain’s political judgment, his choices, his flip-flopping, and his abject reliance on lobbyists. They monopolize his campaign, and, one must assume, his senatorial office. A reliance that would deepen if he wins the Oval Office.

For what it’s worth, I agree with you, too. For those of us who haven’t been in the military, it seems especially troubling. People who risked their lives to serve their country shouldn’t be denigrated for it.
