Blue Dog (and virulent Bush Dog) John Barrow (GA-12) always thought he would be vulnerable from the right. So he moved so far right that he’s usually the Democrat most likely to vote with the GOP in the entire Democratic caucus. CQ Politics reports that his political demise looks like it will come from the Georgia Democratic Party mainstream, not the far right.
For the last few weeks he has called every African-American he knows to beg them to ask respected state Senator Regina Thomas to not run against him. And on May 2 even I got a letter from Barrow, begging for help!
I wanted to update you on my race and thought you’d appreciate a news report about my primary challenge. Because of this new development, I’m going to have to spend substantially more money in the primary election than I had previously planned.
The implications aren’t just confined to the primary. I’m now going to have to do things in June and July that I was hoping I’d be able to do– for the first time in 3 general elections– in August and September. Unless I can raise what I will have to spend in the primary in addition to what I was planning to spend in the general, I will once again be vulnerable to massive infusions of outside money that will begin to pound on me before I’m able to defend myself.
OpenSecrets.org reports he has $1,311,478 cash on hand (as of March 31), most of it from PACs. Between them, his 3 potential Republican opponents have $53,000 cash on hand. Maybe he’s not worried about these 3. In fact, if Barrow is going to be defeated, it will be by Senator Thomas, a mainstream progressive Georgia Democrat.
Before we meet Senator Thomas I want to share a few lines of Lincoln Chafee’s that I found very poignant and that have been brought to mind more than once when I have been on the phone with Senator Thomas. This passage comes from a chapter in Against The Tide in which he’s describing the immediate aftermath of Bush’s 2000 powergrab.
The men and women of the Black Caucus implored us to reject the inevitability of a presidency of George W. Bush. Their pleas seemed more than merely political; I saw in them a genuine fear of what might lie ahead if Governor Bush were elevated to the presidency.
Of course, if we senators had known then how far this new administration would go to undercut the Congress– to wage war whenever it pleases, for however long, at whatever cost– I think many of my colleagues would have answered the pleas of the Black Caucus that day.
I know I would have.
The members of the caucus were simply more attuned than the rest of us to picking up the danger signals coming from the extreme right, perhaps because the right had incited such ugly racial suspicions and even hatred in winning the Republican South Carolina primary for Bush.
But they didn’t and he didn’t and… we all know what happened because not enough people had the guys to stand up for America, to stand up for what was right.
In the last few weeks that I’ve gotten to know Regina Thomas, I’ve gotten to know a woman, a grandmother and a deeply caring fighter who will always stand up… regardless of what anybody says. Once the Deputy Majority Whip of the Georgia House, since 2000 she has been a senator representing the 2nd district, which includes part of her native Savannah and portions of Chathan County.
I know I’m going to catch hell from her later– she insists on a clean positive campaign and she keeps lecturing me– but I just want to remind everyone that the incumbent she’s running against, John Barrow in a virtual 3-way tie with Nick Lampson and Jim Marshall as the Democrats who have voted most frequently to rubber stamp Bush’s agenda. As a little surprise for Senator Thomas, singer Jason Joseph and his team worked on a brand new song and video clip for her campaign. No one who wasn’t working on it has seen until today:
I asked her why she decided to run for Congress. She told me that even as she attended to the business of her local constituency she’s been watching national politics for a long time. "I’ve been dissatisfied with the direction of this country. The issues that are being put on the front burner– in front of the voters during the election year– are non-issues. I know we can do better in coming up with solutions that will help all Americans solve the very real problems we face… I know that I wouldn’t have had an opposition in my senate race if I chose to run again. But it isn’t about me; it’s about all of us. We need people in Congress who are going to be accessible, accountable and who are going to be dependable. We need people who are going to be honest and who are going to talk to people in a straight forward manner and not play with words."
Everyone in Georgia who has talked to me about Senator Thomas would recognize the description she just painted as a self-portrait. Rarely have I come across a politician who has served for so many years with such a sterling reputation for integrity and sincerity. On top of that, Senator Thomas has incredible instincts. She seems to be most concerned with the bread and butter issues that are of the greatest concern to the average citizen. Her work in the state legislature has involved issues that directly affect people’s lives, like health care, education, housing, employment. But no matter what issue I asked her about — from Iraq, to retroactive immunity and warrantless wiretaps, to gay equality– she’s right where progressives want their representatives to be.
But can she win? Well Larry Peterson at the Savannah Morning News explains why the district’s demographics favor Regina. "We’ve previously noted that 69.4 percent of the presidential primary voters in the 12th were– like Thomas– black. But, from Barrow’s perspective, it gets worse: 45 percent were black females. And only 11.9 percent were white males."
One more thing before we hear from Regina Thomas herself. She needs our help in terms of donations and volunteers. You can donate to her campaign at our Blue America page. And Matt Keating has been generous enough to donate 25 copies of his brand new CD, Quixotic, and the first 25 donors who contribute at least $30 to Senator Thomas’ campaign will get a little thank you from Blue America with that CD.

Welcome Regina! Looking forward to hearing about your campaign.
Regina, thank you so much for coming by today when I know you want to be wearing out more tires and more tennis shoes meeting every voter from Augusta to Taliaferro County and back to Chatham. But I did want to ask you a question that’s important to a lot of the FDL community. We know that John Barrow has supported Bush and Cheney on the Iraq war every step of the way– he brags about it in the video above. Do your constituents know that? And do they know that you oppose the war? And do they know the reasons you oppose the war? In fact, just for the record, why don’t you tell us why the occupation of Iraq is bad for peoiple who live in Georgia’s 12th CD.
But Regina, if you beat Barrow he’ll move back here to Athens!
Hello: i am in this race to win.
Hi Regina from the 9th Ward New Orleans!
I’d like to hear about some of the issues you think that are important for your constituents and for those of us that would like to support your candidacy.
If this is the case – then he only moved to Savannah to make sure that he receives the bulk of the votes here.
It’s very simple – The people in the 12th as well as in this Nation wants this war to be over. It’s about the economy. We are spending too much on this war while children and most Americans do not have healthcare, while we are losing jobs to foreign countries. Education is at an all time low – I can go on and on.
That is very much the case. He was on the Athens-Clarke County Board of Commissioners until he ran for this office. I truly wish you the best in this race.
I take it you don’t support No Child Left Behind? Here in New Orleans, we’re having a terrible time with testing obsession. We have a lot of damage control to do down here with our kids. Forcing them into rote memorization and using test scores as a means to threaten teacher’s jobs is not something I would consider helpful. What’s your take on No Child Left Behind?
There are many people in the 12th that have no idea how the current congressman votes and that he votes with Bush and the Republicans. It is my job to let them know how he votes and that he supports borrowing more and more money for this war and that he is uncaring about the American families. Families are being destroyed. The current congressman prefers to fund a war instead of helping children and families. The district will know before the July 15th primary.
With the help of people like yourself that want equality and fairness, people that desires the truth (and are not receiving it) – people who want an elected official to say what they mean and mean what they say. Thank you for the vote of confidence.
why ain’t there a snail mail address included in this post ???
if you wanna raise money, and INCLUDE EVERYONE, you should ALWAYS include the snail mail address
or are people who refuse to use credit cards not welcome or something ???
cash ???
no good or what ???
(wink)
Yes, Regina and we want to help you with that job. Didn’t you tell me there was a radio station in Augusta that you want to put some ads on. I’m hoping we can help finance that. The ads cost $10 each and people can contribute here at our Blue America page. Remember, $30 donors today get free Matt Keating CDs.
Thank you for your time and your dedication, Senator Thomas. Welcome to Blue America, we are very proud to have someone of your caliber to help.
Firepups, please consider giving what you can to help get a real leader elected.
A street address is available thru our Blue America page, going to her homepage.
Thanks for the donation!
No one has ever understood NCLB – It is a mockery to say the least. It is a feel good theme and that is all. More and more children are being left behind – more and more educators are being stressed. Just this month when the students in GA took the CRCT – our State school superintendent (a Republican) said that GA will disregard the Social Studies part of the test because so many failed. Now the US Secy of Ed wants to give 10 States a waiver from the mandates of NCLB – What they should do is scrap the whole plan and start over. My plans are to address this issue not only on the campaign trail ut when I get to the 111th Congress. With people that are watching and know what is going on – this will be a reality.
Thank you for being here, Senator. I don’t suppose you could get someone to run against Tom Price, could you?
Good point! The snail mail address is:
REGINA 4 CONGRESS
PO BOX 14173
SAVANNAH, GEORGIA 31416
And Regina also needs volunteers and you can sign up here
I will be looking at radio stations soon in your area. If you have some recommendations, please let Howie know what they are.
He has a really cool idea for GA-12 (along the lines of the “Had Enough?” radio campaign) and I am looking forward to helping make it happen.
Welcome Senator Thomas, and best of luck in your campaign to unseat the blue dog Barrow. From Howie’s description, you are just the better Democrat we need, more please. (I’m just clicking play on the song now)
Wow! I do have a P O Box and it is Regina4Congress P O Box 14173 Savannah, GA 31416. I will accept contributions at either of the addresses. Thanks for mentioning this. Absolutely an oversight on my part. However; on my website the pob should be listed. Thanks for mentioning this oversight.
LOL!!! The focus as you know is my winning this race and getting to Washington. I did serve with Price in the Ga State Senate.
And this gem Paul Broun!
I believe only 23% of 8th graders passed the Social Studies portion of the test. This test is a must-pass to go on to high school. Last year over 80% passed.
The math portion of the test was flawed, as well. 20% fewer students passed this year, compared to last year. Students that are very proficient at math (according to their teachers) failed the test. Those scores will not be thrown out (yet).
These tests are directly related to NCLB.
Hi: thanks for joining. I am a 12 year legislator – I have had my eyes on this district (12th in GA) for at least 8 years now. I am NOT pleased with what is being/not being done in Washington and we need a true voice for ALL of the people – Not just in the 12th – but this nation.
My deepest sympathies! :~)
Regina, are you worried at all about Barrow’s overwhelming cash advantage? He’s been loading up on huge donations from PACs and he’s going to have lots of “walking around money” to sway voters. How do you combat that kind of thing?
Welcome Senator Thomas and thank you for running!
Sen. Thomas, I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to voting for you! Thank you for challenging John Barrow.
Do you agree with Senator Inhofe who said “Global Warming was invented to improve the ratings of the Weather Channel”? A little humor to go with a serious question.
This is true. If educators are allowed to teach students to retain what is taught instead of trying to memorize answers – then we will have more positive results. Our children are stressed and they are being pushed without the instructions that they need. GA went a step further to create waivers and variances to allow those that have taken the test at least 4 times to still graduate – if they come within 1-2 points of passing. As I said before NCLB needs to be strapped and back to the drawing board. Keep in mind that I have nothing against raising the bar – but let’s raise it in moderation.
Donations:
I’m in. Let’s kick Barrow out of Congress and replace him with a progressive Democrat!
I’m jumping in for $25.
thank you
I wanted to say the when I graduated in 1976 in NY State, if you passed all you course work you got a High School Diploma and if you wanted to, you could choose to take a test, and earn a Regents Diploma, it was all up to the student and there was no pressure, I think this was a much better system.
Sorry it can’t be more, $20 to you state Senator Thomas via the Blue America page.
I trust Howie and Jane.
Some will take his $$$ and still not vote for him. What kind of person would want to be bought off and still think that the person buying will be there for them. Once you have made for something – then you are not owed anything. I am not the least bit worried about his $$$ – We do need CHANGE and the incumbent had gone along with the status quo – He has boted against the Congressional Black Caucus – he has voted along with republicans and bush. When I am out in the district meeting and talking with people – and once they see my record or know/hear of me. They will know that honesty is still the best policy.
I donated too. This is a shot to rid Congress of a member who not only votes badly but who is always pushing the Democratic House caucus to the right. He’s one of the excuses Hoyer and Emanuel have on not pushing to end the war and he embodies Pelosi’s whining about taking impeachment off the table. But just as important, Georgia voters could replace him with a candidate known for integrity, hard work and down to earth progressive values.
Don’t be modest Marion,
Invite the Senator over for some of your delicious food and hospitality. We virtual visitors could then envy her as well*g*
This is exactly what I am saying. Change in the 12th MUST take place in order for us to be about the people’s business and NOT BIG BUSINESS!
Senator Thomas, GA has had problems with the idea of transit, to say the least. MARTA, Atlanta’s mass transit system, is the only major city transit system that operates without federal funding. The metro area has some of the worst traffic in the country, yet MARTA is extremely limited in its reach. Light rail between the major cities, including Savannah, could be a huge boon to the state. I know that Atlanta would be outside your district, but how do you feel about helping the traffic situation around here?
Where/what time and when???? The more people that I get to touch/see the better this district will be.
Glad you asked. I served on the GA Rail Authority Board and we were trying to do just that. Create a rail system linking the major cities and touching the smaller cities on the way. This is really the way to go. As you know the majority/power controls and everything is political. When I am elected I will use my influence along with some others to see that this happens. Of course, we need to make sure that fiscal responsibility is in place and an accounting of the $$$ is clear to all.
Sen. Thomas, I’m afraid he’s probably referring to “cyber food,” as I “serve breakfast” here every morning! I’ll certainly try to get to one of your meetings in Savannah, work (2 jobs) permitting, and you can count on my vote and also on my encouraging everyone else I know in the district to vote for you. I’ll also be kicking a bit into the kitty for you. Barrow goes first, and then maybe we can get rid of Jack too…
There are so many issues that we need to deal with all at once. However; when an incumbent takes his voters for granted and only appease a few, change will take place.
Cyber food is good too! :) The 2010 Census is soon and the districts will be redrawn again. The GA Senate changed to Repubs. after Perdue won – by Dems such as Barrow switching parties – he is close enough already and we do not need him sitting in the 12th to dilute the AA voters or the Democratic voters. Another reason why I am in this fight to win the 12th.
Love your breakfasts, but most of all the accompanying commentary, Marion.
Regina, Barrow was one of the 21 renegade Democrats who signed a letter to Speaker Pelosi demanding that Congress grant Bush the power to use warrantless wiretaps and to allow retroactive immunity for law breaking executives in the telecom industry. Is there any way to make that issue resonate in GA-12. Or are people so worried about employment and high gas prices that little else breaks through?
Thanks!
wow Marion, you lucky duck!
Have any of you constituents brought up former Governor Don Siegelman of Alabama, it appears the Department of Justice and Karl Rove are cheating?
The amount does not matter. I always maximizes my $$$$$. The important thing is to believe in your choice – others will see that sincerity and may change their nminds and go along with your choice. ReginaThomas 4 Congress is MY Choice! because……. This is worth more than $$$$. It’s those smaller sincere donations that means a lot. Don’t get me wrong I want some big bucks too, but only from those that can afford it. Times are tight and getting tighter. My campaigns have always been won on a shoe-string budget and a lot of prayer and faith.
you’re welcome
and a contribution from a california contrarian is on the way
give em hell, Senator
we got yer back …
and THANK YOU for standing up for our country
FWIW, I know a lot of Bush conservatives are just flat out lying about responsibility for the sub-prime collapse. They’re trying to “privatize profits and socialize losses” by claiming that the collapse was caused by federal regulations that forced lenders to make loans to unqualified borrowers.
If that were true, all the foreclosures would be in poor neighborhoods.
As you know, the pension funds, mutual funds, banks and investment banks loaned money to unregulated (black boxes) hedge funds to buy mortgage backed securities on margin. Even a small percentage of defaults within a single mortgage backed security meant the hedge funds could not make a profit and more importantly could not back the loan THEY took out to buy it.
Some will be worried and are worried and rightfully so. Most do not know that he has signed such a letter – if they did, they would be afraid, very afraid.
Sen. Thomas, do you have yard signs available?
Once I get to Congress I will do more! Like stop outsourcing our jobs, provide adequate healthcare, educate our children, stop this war because the Iraqis will not annoint Bush with their oil. Thanks for the help.
Yes, I have large signs as well. They are going fast – I need to place another order on Monday.
1,851 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Howie Klein and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Welcome Senator Thomas, I will gladly contribute to yer most patriotic efforts.
[edited by mod]
KEEP THE FAITH AND REMEMBER NOT ALL FASVCISTS CALL THEMSELVES REPUBLICANS!!
Another huge problem. People do not know this. Every session since the Repubs took over in GA – they have tried to and at times been successful in investing in High Foreign Capital Gains. They use Standard & Poor’s criteria to deceive other legislators that do not know enough about this kind of investing. Another reason that the Gov’t will not do anything real about immigration reform Another campaign smoke N mirrors issue. Too many people losing their homes – predatory lending and subprime lending are riping people off. Another fine example of ENRON.
Do you constituents know that Bush sent 363 tons of Cash to Iraq, to pay Iraqi pensions after the invasion at the request of the Iraqi Finance Minister, there are pictures of the pallets of cash being transfered, the largest tranfer every in the history of the US. If you oppenent supports the war, a picture of that against some local need, would be a powerful ad.
I do know this. wolves, strips, etc. underneath they do not change. Change a heart then you have won – change a mind and watch out!
Are there payday loans in Georgia and are there any limits on them?
I just went to Sen. Thomas web site to toss some coin her way, and was very impressed with the resources page — fabulous job!
Then it needs to be done. No they do not know this. We shall work on this. I am sure there were some Americans getting their fair share of the $$$ as well. Another way of extortion.
Thanks.
It is an honor to meet you today. It’s persons like you that give me hope that we can turn this country around. I cannot send much but consider it an honor to send what I can.
I have Bruce Braley as my congressman in Iowa who replaced the odius Jim Nussle. You can do it! Thanks for the inspiration.
I don’t know about limits, but I’ve seen ads on TV for “advance on your paycheck” loans, and the town is lousy with places where you can hock your car title.
Was that my SenatorReginaThomas.com page or my reginathomasfor congress.com page. The campaign page is still under construction.
This was a huge issue a few years ago. I think they were banned, but then came back, but I may be mistaken. Sen. Thomas would definitely know more.
“Get your title back with Title Max”
It was ReginaThomas4Congress.com.
Howie, Jason Joseph’s “Forty-two Dollars” is terrific!
This is a false sense of “I can make it to Payday.” I co-sponsored a bill in the Ga State senate to do away with this.
I love it and can’t wait to use it. Thanks Jason you and Howie are great!
It was watered down.
Thanks. I’m hoping we can get some traction on the song in GA-12 and have him go down to Savannah and Augusta and perform at fundraisers for Regina. Some of the local Georgia bloggers are going to help with the radio stations there. I went to see Jason play this week and he sits at a piano and that voice just overpowers the room. He’s fantastic. (Huge Obama supporter– but now he’s getting into Regina too.)
Thank you. I want to keep the real issues in the front and not ones to get people all emotional and think that the everyday bread and butter issues will be taken care of. reginathoms4congress just keeping it real.
Thank you. I couldn’t remember the problem with it – whether it was weak or repealed, or what. I know similar loans are still a problem.
A fantastic idea. That voice is so commanding. When I first sw the video – I could not concentrate on the video for listening to the words.
The song is great, and I love that Barrow’s getting a real challenger. Given the scarce resources that us non-gazillionaire netroots folk have, we need to be strategic about where they’re put. What are a few things that you’d say your race has going for it that will allow you to get to victory?
Reason #20 alone would be reason enough to vote for Sen. Thomas. Adamantly opposed to the occupation of Iraq.
FWIW, MTV inverview with Jason Joseph. For those of you who are not huge MTV fans, please give it a chance, because Jason’s music is very eclectic.
Bullseye.
Yes, there are payday loans here – it is supose to be according to your income. Some go over if the customer is a long standing customer. So I have been told. As you know car titles are worth far more than the amount they willloan you – then they become loan sharks when its time to pay the money back.
The song he did for Obama is pretty powerful too: “One Man.”
In addition to that – We have more suicides and divorces from this war than any other. The very idea about a GI Bill to allow them to go to college is fodder. How can they even concentrate on studies without the proper counseling, therapy, services that they so badly need when they are injured. We must put these things in place fully fund and really take care of the men and women that are sacrificing their lives everyday for Bush’s ill-conceived war?
I never could have paid him for 42 reasons.
Oh my. That’s powerful.
Now that Christine Todd Whitman, former EPA Administrator has tesified in Congress that the Clear Skies Act of 2003 actually allows more mercury pollution, if your oppenent voted for it, you can use that also. Whitman resigned rather than support a law that would allow more pollution.
I’m in. Beautiful song – One Man. And I’m a sucker for chin dimples. Good luck, Senator. Fingers crossed for you.
I work for the Georgia Ear Associates as a transcriptionist, and I’m starting to hear my docs dictate that we’re seeing patients because Winn Army Community Hospital is understaffed. This is criminal neglect of the troops, in my opinion. Here’s hoping that when you arrive in Congress you can join with others to fix this situation.
Howie, great post, btw. The Lincoln Chafee quote is outstanding.
Welcome to FDL, Ms. Thomas. You seem like the sort of person we need more of in Congress, so I’ve left something for you at Blue America.
Since it’s been on my mind recently, I thought I’d ask what, if anything, you think Congress ought to be doing about climate change.
This administration (as you know) is all about allowing drilling for oil (without good scientific reasonings) Using supply/demand as reasons for the spike in gas/oil prices – not caring about the water/air or anything else. Maybe they think that they will take their $$$ get in a bubble until the dust settles. The incumbent is not environmental friendly either.
It is a priority for me to make sure that our veterans are taken care of.
thanks Boo & Howie @86
we each add in one pair of hands and pretty soon we’ve got our country back.
Over at ActBlue today, our campaign to raise money for ads to roast Blue Dog Chris Carney is the #1 “Hot Page” and our efforts to raise money for Regina is #5. Many of you know how much disdain I have for Carney. But it’s even more important to get rid of Barrow. Barrow votes worse than Carney and if Barrow is defeated we’re going to win up with Regina in the House. I want to appeal to everyone again to please contribute what you can. No amount is too small– and only amounts over $2,300 are too big. Donate here, please.
Senator Thomas please feel free to ignore this, as I don’t want to side track the discussion.
1) I know Georgia has some coastline. Has there been any investment in prototypes of wind turbines to see if they work and to determine environmental impact?
They are doing it – messing it up I mean. Why allow all of this nuclear waste when we have no place to store it -and the lifetime storage lan is not working. They have even resorted to storing some under water. Eventially we will get it from the air as wellas the sea. There must be limits in place to curtail what is and can happen. We/congress is not good stewards of the environment all for the sake of $$$$$. Emissions, along with so many other pollutants are increasing everyday. Untill we put the truth out there no one will be the wiser. My plans are to expose what is happening and rely more on scientific results.
Also Senator Thomas is there anything you’d like to share with us about the critical drought in the Southeast?
Would it be OT to add that Ed Fallon and Leslie Byrne are both facing primary challenges in early June, and could use any extra bucks folks have lying around?
Not to my knowledge. They are so busy with E10 which by the way is not the cleanest form of alternative fuels. Now they are and have raised food prices stating the alternative fuels is the reason. Another way for them to make big $$$ for select few. There are other means of alternative options – which is not being considered because then they will find something else to blame on the rising costs of everything. Cane is better cleaner and more efficient.
and this is the weekend for wienie roasts!
Completely agree. Even pouring huge amounts of concrete to contain it (and we have to add that cost to the cost of the fuel) if radioactive waste leaks into the groundwater, we’re in huge trouble. Can’t put that toothpaste back in the tube.
This raises the same point I made earlier – we have other great primary challengers and have to decide where to put our money. Progressives should make sure our money goes to candidates that have the chance to get there. Not knowing about Senator Thomas, I’m thrilled that she’s taking on Barrow, but want to know how she intends to win.
Senator Thomas, I trust you can understand the situation many of us are in — we have to face the painful decision of whom to support lest we send a mere dollar or two to each good candidate. Can you please address why you’ve got a feasible path to win this race?
This is what happens when you are not prepared. As with anything else – the haves are given no limits on what they do (construction is booming- without regard to the environment and usage of water) Then to add insult to injury or an already dire situation – this State has given GA Power the go-ahead to build 2 more nuclear reactors (near Waynesboro/Augusta) – really close to the Savannah River Site (SRS) – then you have the havenots who must abide by rules and regulations for the haves. We are so busy being greedy until we can not and have not figured that all must be held accountable. Instead they want to go to Tennessee and take back and correct territory lines.
Because of the waste issue, I think nuclear energy is a non-starter. Trying to build something that will last for 100,000 years is quite a challenge, particularly when you consider that this is at least five times longer than we’ve been a civilized species.
Doesn’t stop people from trying, though.
Glad you asked. The timing is right – he has lied and disappointed so many of his supporters/money contributors. His voting record – which will be exposed and his inattention to the masses in the 12th. He is not responsive. I have total faith in my efforts until – hold your $$$ for my November challenge with the Republican. Haven’t you heard? ‘I AM IN IT TO WIN IT AND I/WE WILL!
I don’t know about the rest of the district, but I can attest to the fact that here in Savannah Sen. Thomas is instantly recognized by everyone (love those hats!), and extremely well thought of. She’s accessible, and listens to and works for her constituents. She’s probably got much better name recognition than John Barrow too. I would anticipate that she’ll pound the piss out of him, at least here.
It’s only to help the rich get richer at the expense of low income people. Notice where they put those plants?
Peter, excellent point and I hope Senator Thomas will respond to you. But let me tell you that she’s been getting elected in this district for over a decade and most of the folks there don’t have a clue who Barrow even is. He was gerrymandered out of his Athens-based district and moved to Savannah last year. He’s out of step with the voters there and doesn’t really fit in. He has fashioned a career in politics based on shoring up his right flank. Regina’s record is based on solid progressive values of inclusion and supporting everyday working people. Barrow is confused and off-balance and has been calling everyone he knows begging them for help.
Being known is certainly half the battle. How much overlap is there between the state senate district and the Cong. District?
Welcome, Regina Thomas, and thanks for taking on Barrow.
Thanks. The responses that I have received from several of the other counties is similar to your comments. There are some here in Savannah that have never heard of him. Then there are some as I said before are not pleased (across racial lines), some are willing to give him another chance. This is bigger than him – it’s bigger than me – it’s about all of US and he has proven that he is only for a select few. Sure John Barrow will get his votes and I will get mine. I am confident enough to believe that 7/15 when the dust is settled and all have spoken – that it will be reginathomas4congress that will move to the November 4th ballot. I work for everybody!
The mysteries of how districts are
drawngerrymandered escape me. Maybe Sen. Thomas will answer this one.In for $25 — hope you’ll find a good use for it, perhaps an extra order of yard signs?
Thank you for challenging this odious Bush Dog Democrat. We need more insightful, intelligent people-powered Democrats like you in Washington. You and Donna Edwards will make quite the freshman team! Thanks also to your family for the sacrifices this kind of campaign entails.
Will anyone joining us late match my $25 at Blue America, please?
Howie, thanks for that info. And to Senator Thomas for responding to my question as well. Barrow’s appeals for help do suggest he feels threatened by his primary opponent.
boy is that a pet peeve of mine, too
Good point. With all of his $$$ he has called on many to have them ask me not to run against him. He knows that he is in trouble simply because he is not a hands on congressman.
I quoted Larry Peterson (above) in the Savannah Morning News who thinks the demographics all work in Senator Thomas’ favor. She’s the ultimate grassroots candidate and she’s determined to meet every voter in the district.
Not only that, the incumbent and a few ‘good democrats’ are putting the word out there that the republicans want me to win the primary – because I will be easy to beat in November and they can take the district back – my response to that – “When pigs fly” or “when the cows come home on their own”
The only way to do it and a couple of tanks of gas.
Thanks for not responding to this kind of pressure. We’ve lost some Blue America candidates in the past because community pressure got to them (cough*Andrew Horne*cough). But I know this can be difficult for candidates to withstand.
Please tell those who ask you to drop out that you are part of a huge people-powered movement all across America to take our country back, and John Barrow is NOT. He’s got to go. As you said, it isn’t about you or him — it’s about our country and our values. He’s not done right by either one.
Thanks Cujo.
Not much time left – to sum this all up. Change must take place in this election for us to take back America – for us to refocus on the real issues – for us to say enough of the smoke N mirrors, enough of someone else setting our agenda and pretending that all is well. All is not well. Barrow had his chance to prove that he is a true democrat that cares about all of the people and he has let us down.
Senator Thomas, I just arrived, are you still here? Do you support HR 676, Medicare for all?
Stopping by with an armload of fresh cut heavenly scented giant peonies to give a warm welcome and a heart felt contribution.
Thank you for stepping up, Senator!
Thanks for spending so much time with us, Sen. Thomas. I anticipate I’ll be voting for you in November, after you beat Barrow this July. Rock on!
Howie, I’m sold. Senator Thomas has a lot going for her and we can together help give her enough of a megaphone to get her message out to the district.
I’ve got 42 reasons to support her, so I’m in for $42. Anyone want to join me?
Sen. Thomas is on the verge of leaving, and may not get to answer your question. If you look at the video above you’ll get a clear idea of where she stands on the issues. She’s a good ‘un.
The only promises that I make: I will be true to who I am. I will listen to everyone’s issues. Not just in Georgia but across the other States. I will always be honest (as I have been all along) I will put the American people first, I am ACCESSIBLE, DEPENDABLE AND ACCOUNTABLE. My audio will match my video. I will not discriminate. I will not Judge. Understanding that I can to be all things to all people all the time – I will do my very best at all times. The time is now for change in the 12th District – help me bring about that change and you will not regret it. I stand tall, I stand firm, I stand for America – and we need America to stand with and for US!!!
What a GREAT idea!!!! Why didn’t I think of that!
Sen. Thomas it’s clear that you understand what government service is and what stewardship is. I only ran into the quote below a few months ago here at FDL. ICYMI too, I thought you might be interested.
Also, since you began this chat about education, I wanted to remind any who missed it, that the last surviving plaintiff in Brown versus Board of Education just passed away.
Zelma Henderson, Who Aided Desegregation, Dies at 88
Perfect.
I do not know what all is in that resolution. I do believe that all should be allowed to pay in the system according to their means. We must take care of everybody – if not when a pandemic breaks out – we all will be vulnerable. What Bush and the Repubs had done to healthcare as well as Medicare is horrible – we need to restore what we once had and make it better. I have what I know can and will work. Now is not the time to expose it. But I will soon. Thanks to all! See you at the polls in July/November then in Washington DC as the next Congresswoman for the 12th District in GA.
Senator Thomas, you practice what you preach about accessibility. Thanks for making yourself available for us to interact.
“Congresswoman Regina Thomas” — yes, that sounds good! You are everything we are looking for in a progressive candidate.
And defeating a Blue Dog dinosaur? Terrific goal.
Folks please dig deep to help support this wonderful candidate. We can really make a difference in this contest.
Regina, thanks so much for coming to firedoglake today, best of luck with your campaign, and please keep us posted.
Regina, thanks for coming by– and we want you back here to celebrate on July 15 with us!
I will do just that. It has been my pleasure. I am truly a public servant.
Me, I’m suddenly feeling much more optimistic about the 12th District. Can’t wait for July when I can vote for her against Barrow.
Thanks for dropping by, Senator. Or should I say Congresswoman?
Thank you very much for taking time to chat with us today. We’ll be watching closely for your victory in July — come back and see us again when you start raising money for the general election!
And thanks to Howie Klein for finding wonderful candidates for us! Blue America is the best.
Damn straight!
I agree. It’s such a pleasure to meet all these candidates who care about our country. Thanks, Howie.
Trust me, I’ll be shouting from the cyber rooftops! You’ll find out!
My,
We finally got our Saturday uplifting thread. If you can, Marion, feed us some local stories about this campaign at breakfast. Thanks
As I find them in the Savannah Daily Disappointment and around town.
The long awaited HRC RFK thread is upon us. Any punching bags for Hil around?
Here’s an article in the local rag that makes clear how she differs from Barrow.
Marion I hope you’ll keep us posted on how things are going in this election.
Hi, all you late readers!
Howie needs help – anyone a member of Daily Kos that can recommend and/or comment???
He thanks you very much!
btw, maybe I missed it, when is the election ???
I wanna tell my blue dog congresscritter about this
Late as usual but I thought I’d mention that John Barrow voted in favor of the military commissions act and in favor of Federal intervention in
the case of Terri Schaivo.
