A few months after the removal of precancerous growths and polyps from his face and colon, Senator McCain was forced to undergo a pair of painful pastorectemy procedures yesterday to cut out two malignant tumors which had threatened to cripple or even kill his presidential campaign.
"We had been urging the Senator to deal with this condition since March," said McCain lobbyist-campaign adviser Charlie Black, "but you know how stubborn he can be. Once he takes a position on something, he never ever changes it."
"Boy howdy, some of the things he called me when I tried to persuade him, I still have blisters on that side of my face," added lobbyist-campaign manager Rick Davis. "In the end, it took me and several other lobbyists to hold him down and drag him to the operating room. He's strong as a bull, you know. Incredibly virile. They had to send out for extra anesthesia from another hospital to knock him out, that's how strong he is."
The Associated Press reports that McCain has already made a full recovery. Early this morning, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee wrestled a bear, bench-pressed a Hummer, and slept with five blonde lobbyists before a small group of hand-picked lobbyist-reporters to demonstrate his physical fitness.
However, doctors caution that McCain is not out of the woods yet. "This particular type of malignancy can leave permanent scarring and other traces behind, and is known to have a high rate of recurrence, particularly at times of high stress such as a presidential campaign," explained McCain's lobbyist-physician Lilly Pfizer. "He will need to be monitored round-the-clock by sexy blonde lobbyist-nurses for signs of a relapse."
Some outside observers have expressed concern that McCain may also suffer from a very serious condition known as dubyanoma. Not only is it impossible to remove through surgery, but it is highly resistant to the most common cancer therapies, as it is already both toxic and radioactive. Only a very small segment of the population is susceptible to it, but experts on the condition have confirmed that McCain belongs to one of the most high-risk groups. "If the Senator does have it, and I think he does, his only option is to pray that it just goes away on its own," said a lobbyist close to the McCain campaign, speaking on condition of anonymity.

yo
Fritz!
KO speaks for me! ; )
Yo.
X-Acto!
Lots of posts on this topic does the high command at the Lake know something explosive about McCain’s health they have yet to reveal or is this a real slow newsday?
hey Eli.
I actually didn’t know about kirk’s post. Plus I couldn’t really think of anything else other than pointing at the latest right-wing Obama-is-a-Muslim-OMG smears.
McCain’s lobbyist-physician Lilly Pfizer
a proud, uh, Merck ‘n, not used to Schering-Ploughs.
Hey siri.
I think it was the NewsHour of all places which noted that McCain’s medical records and his wife’s 2006 tax return were all part of a typical Friday news dump.
EPU’ed about those medical records:
1500 pages to 1999 and 1173 to 2008. 2673 pages of medical records are a lot for someone supposed to be in good health, just saying.
Age
General physical condition
History of melanoma
History of substance abuse
Extent of physical trauma from his captivity
Current medications
Any major surgeries
Any other significant medical conditions
I think all of these are legitimate in assessing if McCain or any candidate is physically up to the responsibilities of being President. Beyond these, privacy is lost and there is no public gain.
It’s take out the trash day on steroids because it’s a holiday weekend.
So much trash.
So little time.
Following Hillary?
Exact! Oh!
“In the end, it took me and several other lobbyists to hold him down and drag him to the operating room.”
Bwahaa
.
Sorry Eli
McCain is going to hike the Grand Canyon next month…no really…it’s true.
Eli, the post is hilarious!
“Senator McCain was forced to undergo a pair of painful pastorectemy procedures yesterday to cut out two malignant tumors which had threatened to cripple or even kill his presidential campaign.”
Mwahahahahaa..
I’m sure Drs. “AP” wrote their in-depth analysis of the thousand plus pages days ago. Dr. “W” probably dictated it.
Get ready for Prezdenent Romney.
I want someone to lecture me on civility for calling Hillary a total fucking scumbag. Where’s the party unity?
Quite all right.
In the end, it took me and and several other lobbyists to keep him off THE BUTTON!!!!
lolololol!
is that a condition related to priapism (sp?)????
lolololol!!!!!
I think you are being quite civil all things considered.
RIGHT on target Raven!!!!!
You really should be more civil. :)
Rats! Where’s Juno?
KO speaks for me, too. Hillary revealed her true character today. She is not worthy of a place on the ticket and if any of her followers still believe she is worthy, then they’re defective, too.
Hillary has no soul. I don’t know what she is but a human being isn’t on the list.
Ditto.
WEll! Raven’s BEEN TOLD!
One question I have is that McBush had another skin lesion removed for cancer in Feb 2008…AND it was not released….. Wouldn’t the Repugs want to know that before Super Tuesday & the following primaries?
Hillary IS a total fucking scumbag. There can be no other description of her at this point.
Cueing in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…
I just came from the kickoff of our local Nam Vets Memorial weekend campout. I saw an old friend who was a nurse at Phu Bai during Hamburger Hill. She is a great lady and it’s hard to explain how funny some of the stuff we talked about through the tears were.
McSame is giving a speech to the American Lesion.
lol :)
They don’t care about McCain…they have plans to put someone unelectable of their own into power.
McCain is a patsy sucker.
Must be on the West Coast, it’s too late at night here!
Republicans understand that they have to be kept in the dark about certain things for their own good.
Hi friend. How’s things?
my sides!
can u have some respect for my sides?
and my cheeks?
omg
tearz!
I know exactly what you’re talking about. I never laughed so hard in my life as in those abysmal months/years in the Army. Something about shared misery made things seem funnier. Can’t explain it.
You mean like these things?
Hey, Deb. Lots of pastors have been rejected lately, but I still want your endorsement. Just don’t talk to the media, okay?
We’re all still healing. Those of who went and those of us who only stood and waited and cared. How, god I wonder how, is it that we didn’t stop this catastrophe from happening to ours and others’ kids this time around? I felt so powerless then and feel so powerless now. Crap.
I thought you’d appreciate it.
sorry. maybe you should see a doctor?
Yes, it just makes people upset and they lose faith in their government. Better off not knowing.
How indeed. I’m as culpable as someone could be.
News from Phoenix….
The May 27th Phoenix Arizona fund raiser for McCain with Bush has been moved from its planned location due to the threat of a HUGE Anti-War protest. All the peace groups plus KPHX Progressive Talk radio has been announcing the event.
The Veterans for Peace, Coalition against the War, Code Pink, Woman in Black and all the other groups here have pushed McBush and Bush out of their planned facility. Right now it is at an undisclosed facility in Mesa AZ….
A bunch of raging grannies have them on the run……
What makes dubyanomas so dangerous is their complete lack of integrity. By the time they are found, the prognosis is grim. The only known treatment is elective surgery to remove the patient’s tenure.
we can’t afford those things in my house. thanks anyway.
“is that a condition related to priapism (sp?)????”
McCain would rather be known as that kind of hothead.
.
(((Raven))) (((old friend)))
And just what do you want me to endorse you for? Sadly, every time I talk to anyone in the media they misquote me. So what else is new? Anyway I’ve got about 17 years of sermons for whomever to go through that will find all sorts of stuff you probably wouldn’t want anything to do with.
Toobin really, really good on analyzing the court and implications of the election. He seems to really like Obama
I’m a doctor, take 2 of these and call me in the morning! :)
Oh hail, Oh hail, Oh infantry
Impeachment is the cure.
Old is right! :):):) But then again, where I just came from I looked pretty good. Those other folks are really old!
it’s time for a sermon on “the Hill”
LOVE IT!!!!!!
If he can’t stand up to the raging grannies, then how will he stand up to Ira
qnthe bad guys?Crooks & Liars has two posts that are appropriate for Memorial Day. On top is a video tribute to vets and active duty military by Rep Tom Allen and third one down is by Jon Soltz of VoteVets on the GI Bill.
Preview really was my fren on this one. Whew.
omg
the folks in here, and ESPECIALLY ELI, got NUTHIN on Maher’s writers!
i’m just in hysterics here.
tearz,
sorry,
i’ll straighten up and try to be relevant.
geeeeeze!
Hey man, just was hangin with some cats from the MFR traveling museum. Pretty conservative but a good lot.
Yeah, I really worry about some of those early sermons leaking to the media. Of course, I didn’t know you then, and would never have sat in the pews.
McSame’s medical records are stored in a top-secret suppository, I repose.
the turrissssts!
what about the turrisssts???!
LOL.
BTW… did anyone catch that CindyLou earned 6 million in 2006 per her released tax returns.. (just quoting off teevee)…. now with that Vogue spread in her size ZERO jeans and bare footed….. isn’t she just one of the gals?
The Museum
Olbermann tore Hillary a new one didn’t he? I believe he ’bout got it covered. I could not find fault with his assessment.
actually, the early sermons were pretty tame. It’s the more recent ones that are kind of “loaded.”
I don’t know about you good peeps, but I can tell in a heartbeat when someone is a Viet Nam Vet. I’ve been around them all my whole adult life, and they have a particular energy about them. Many are just “off” somehow, they just have a unique energy. God love each and every one of them, and THANK THEM!
Obama’s an elitist and McCain is a good ol’ boy like Shrub.
It’s called hypervigilence
The raging grannies are great–they sing at our Saturday farmer’s market every week…really creative!
it was another GREAT from Olbermann. He speaks for me in all of his SCs, only he does so so much more eloquently! He does those, and never uses one swear word and I admire him huge for that~
something I cannot do.
what, she can’t afford shoes?
careful, our own Scarecrow is one of those that you call “just ‘off’”
Pure Rovian spin…accuse your opponent of being what your candidate actually is.
Works every time.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that. Had quite a difference of opinion with some in 06.
It continues to blow my mind that someone can go through that shit and come out conservative. Nice folks, though.
He seems awfully stable to me!
“Yeah, up yours, buddy.” John McCain
One of the great mysteries of my life. My close buddies call me a peace queer and I call them nazi lifer motherfuckers. Course it was worse until I got sober!
I’ve tried to give her the benefit of the doubt even though she’s never been my candidate. It’s been painful. But I’m done and it’s over. Her whining this week about sexism just embarrassed me, and this final “grotesque” thing (to quote Rachel) is just too much.
hmm, that was not meant to be offensive. it’s just true. i honor those people and tell them so,
but like last weekend, I met a man who was a VN vet, and was going to vote for McSame. His reasoning was racist and the sane distaste for “hill”. By that comment I meant that there’s something wrong with some area of their lives, and i did say MANY of them, certainly not all. i don’t mean that in any disrespctful way, and i don’t think i’m wrong there. it’s that war, what it did to so many,
really! NO offense meant! i’ve known these people all my adult life!
So McBush and McSame are afraid to confront the raging grannies.
The “leader of the free world” is afraid of the grannies.
Just. Too. Much.
Preview is my fren, too.
WIsh I saw him more often
(and puniase, between you and Eli tonight, i’m laughing so hard the cats are waiting for my hairball…)
And Cindy Sheehan and Mary Tillman too…
I thought he *liked* younger women.
Some are not familiar with the reports of Smedley Butler.
Thanks for that. Bookmarked so I can read in depth later. Still got my MRF and Swift Boat pins. Just thinkin’ about it, what a crazy motherfucker I was.
I don’t think the rev was being negative at all.
as a proctocol, logical matter, I cannot disagree.
Take a look at the kitten spread….. is this to make McBush more virile or what?
Letting Her Hair Down, but Still Keeping Up Appearances
A very wise soldier, that one…reminds me of the ones we are blessed to have here.
ugggh. she seems to have a mortician as a make-up artist.
I resemble that remark.
At first the Anti-war groups were bummed out….. put a lot of time & effort to plan this event then they realized….
IN McBush’s home town…. IN his home state…. he and the Prez is chased out on a rail by a ragtag bunch of anti-war protesters….
No offense taken. Actually some of my best friends are normal “on” people. :)
Check this, I found this almost 30 years to the day, I’m in it and had no idea it existed. Nixon had just landed on the lawn.
and another PRICELESS comment from Eli!
Not bad for a “trollop” and a “c**t”, to quote her “kept” husband.
it’s good to keep a mix. i know almost NO normal “on” people. i’ve never gravitated to that.
:)
OK - dish - which one are you!
probably should have had a ;-) at the end of it. Sorry siri.
Which one is you?
No shirt.
OT. Remembering that Bush did NOTHING for the survivors of Katrina…
‘The State Council yesterday ordered government departments to cut spending by 5 percent this year to free up money for quake reconstruction.
The money will help to finance a 70 billion yuan (10 billion U.S. dollars) fund for rebuilding after the May 12 quake, which killed tens of thousands, the Cabinet said on its website.’
http://english.people.com.cn/9.....15901.html
Priceless is right. Thankfully, given all his other maladies, the WaPo has given McCain a clean bill of health regarding PTSD.
and you know, I DID protest that war. was at a jane fonda rally in DenCo, and protests in CA, and Idaho. But NEVER disrespected any of our men and women coming home! NEVER. That was just insane.
and letting your freak flag fly
The six million dollar Trollop wants to encourage women to do community service.
Oh yea, didn’t cut my hair till I broke my back and the piled it and taped it up. It stayed that way for 6 weeks. After they put the harrington rods in and put em in that big ass cast I had to cut it off.
I think it’s more that they feel “safer” or “more secure” when they maintain that militaristic frame of mind. For many the military was the closest thing they had to a family, they just didn’t know it at the time. They’ve carried it over into their current lifestyles.
lol
the Bionic “B”…….
since when did the WaPo have a psychiatry degree?
((((Raven!)))))
wow
that’s some major suckage!
They got theirs the same day the AP got MD’s.
How on earth do you DO that??!!! 707!
I don’t think it earned one today. They seem to have ignored the various signs folks have pointed to in McCain’s public behavior, not to mention that the condition isn’t always visible. It strikes me as another instance of really bad science reporting, and that it’s probably in service of a larger agenda hasn’t escaped me, either.
They got a degree from Frist University.
Nah, I was lucky. Fractured T-6 and 18 months later I was back playin hoops. It actually improved my posture being in a body cast for a year. It also forced me to go back to college and get my degree. Long strange trip.
punaise has been keeping us laughing for years now.
You’re probably preaching that radical, quasi-Communist “Christianity” stuff aren’t you? We have our eye on people like you…
Ah, yes. How stoopid of me.
But methinks they evaluated based on the wrong videotape.
For a year or so, half of us thought he was just a lousy speller/typist.
another urban legend & myth… it is my understanding and experience that ALL military returning from Vietnam returned via military transport which landed on stateside bases….. correct me if I am wrong but this was again one of the myths of the anti-war community….
OT: RFK, Jr. On Hillary’s Remarks
from TalkLeft by Big Tent Democrat
Link: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.....ex.html?hp
Ive heard her make that argument before, Mr. Kennedy said, speaking on his cell phone as he drove to the family compound in Hyannis for the holiday weekend. It sounds like she was invoking a familiar historical circumstance in support of her argument for continuing her campaign. . . . [H]is support of Mrs. Clinton has not wavered.
Far Out.
Actually not. I preach about radical justice stuff from all sorts of traditions.
That’s perfect. it should be repeated as often as possible.
I hope they remember which party has been attacking their VA benefits, especially regarding PTSD. Maybe when they have to fight them on the telephone, with letter writing and through their congressmen to simply retain their existing benefit checks, that will help them to see a little clearer.
I thought Teddy was supporting Obama. What did I miss?
Different Kennedy. RFK Jr.
That’s right, along with Caroline.
katy, i saw them disrespected. on the streets, and at airports, and in news clips, i SAW them spit on and cursed. it was shameful and a horrible moment in our history. it happened. that was NOT a myth or legend. my own eyes! i’ll never forget it either.
Crybabies:
Bobby Kennedy Jr has been supporting her.
Lot’s of civilian aircraft and even if you came home MATS you still flew to your HOR civilian when you DEROS’s and ETS’d. The bullshit spitting stories are usually set in civilian airports. The stories you are talking about were rooted in some of the protests at Oakland Army Station where protesters could get fairly close. See “Spitting Image” Jerry Lembke.
The folks in NOLA didn’t own all our debt…
Then he is a fool.
trying hard to keep us all in stitches. :~)
right. it’s a big family, and easy to get confused.
lQQk to gnome
Where? If anyone would have spit on me or anyone I knew there would have been some serious ass kicked.
Where? When? Why? I had friends in and friends who fled and all were decent people. I’ve always wondered about the idea that people spit on our vets. Hey, it wasn’t them! Where did you get your experience of this?
ah, yes.
A house divided.
Is Frist an editor? Could he do a diagnosis from afar again?
Eh?
KO is on, the second airing, here now. if you missed his SC, he really nailed it. he LISTED all the things I had personally “let slide” with “hill”. if you are getting it where you are, it is SO worth a look-see.
Suture self.
I’m sorry but I really have a problem with this. Lembke’s book is a serious document analysis of this issue, I want to see any proof, he found none.
Oh, for sure that’s the truth. I just was wondering HOW… I thought I was fairly good at word play, and then I met up with punaise’s work here. [prostrates in awe]
until plastered I will not cast as Persians.
i’m telling you all! I saw it happen with MY OWN EYES. at the airport in Denver, and there were other clips from other airports, 2 i think but don’t know where they were, and at the VA parade in DenCo, and at other Veteran marches and parades, it was all in the news, i saw it. and they never did get angry, there was no ass kicking, they put their heads down and continued walking on. i’ll google it, and see what i come up with, but it’s out there.
it happened!
Warning: Do not tie this at home.
A persistent criticism leveled against those who protested the United States’s involvement in the Vietnam War is that protesters spat upon and otherwise derided returning soldiers, calling them “baby-killers”, etc. Lembcke says he found no evidence to suggest this ever happened and suggests it may have come in part from the common chant by protesters aimed at President Lyndon Baines Johnson, “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?” One of the hallmarks of the period’s anti-war movement was its stated support for the troops in the field and the affiliation of many returning veterans with it. One of Lembcke’s conclusions in Spitting Image is that there was not a single media report to support the claims of spitting. He theorizes that the reported “spitting on soldiers” scenario was a mythical projection by those who felt “spat upon” and was meant to discredit future anti-war activism. He suggests that the images of pro-war antipathy against anti-war protesters helped contribute to the myth. Lembcke argues that memories of being verbally and physically assaulted by anti-war protesters were largely socially constructed, arguing falsely that not even one case could be documented.
I came back in a commercial jet. Don’t remember the carrier. But that was out of Japan. Military Airlift Command (MAC), later renamed Military Air Transport Service (MATS), out of Saigon to Tachikowya AFB outside Tokyo. We arrived in the world at about 2am to avoid protesters. Flew into Tan Son Nhut, Saigon in 67 on a commerical flight. That was weird.
MiS - it’s some kind of weird affliction. Eli suffers from it too (or maybe he’s in remission?) but does a much better job of concealing it from the general public.
OK I give up!
You may not, but McThuselah wants to bomb bomb bomb Iran.
Let us hope that he doesn’t get cast in the role that will enable him to do so.
You are telling me that people spit on vets at veteran parades? Sorry, I’m outta here, that is ridiculous.
Heh. I’m tempted, but a bit distracted.
you sure it was anti-war folks and not the american legion folks?
… not doubting you saw what you say you did. i have no personal experience, just have heard different stories from different folks. (lembcke is here and i’ve spoken to him about his book - but have not read it)
What tangled threads we weave..)
OK, I gotta splint. catcha later!
Ok, my uncle flew medi-vac flights into San Diego and Travis…. My Dad (WWII Vet) and I did anti-war protests and never did I see anyone disrespect a Vet… Dad, a Marine would not tolerate it….
Yep.
They wrote this:
Yet:
and
and:
Nope. No PTSD symptoms there at all, right?
Well - he’s only known to exhibit five of the six diagnostic criteria for PTSD (and he’d likely have to consent to direct interviewing to assess the sixth).
Nope, no suggestion of PTSD there, right?
How can the WaPo be sure?
They found a surgeon to tell them so:
Hey - if the WaPo’s Village “common sense” and a surgeon agree on the psych diagnoses, how could a psychitrist presume to disagree?
Sure wish I’d had them to turn to when I did my trauma psychiatry fellowship at UCLA.
Funny, I don’t seem to recall Dr. Litwin was part of the psych faculty then… Guess he was too busy with surgery.
I was called everything but a white man but was never physically assaulted. San Diego is a Navy town so it wasn’t bad. At the other extreme was going to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in dress blues and having the recruits gawk at your ribbons. In the Exchange, one of the best around, they’d gather like teenagers pointing and whispering. The wife always thought it was hilarious. It was embarrassing.
Raven, i didn’t DO that, i just SAW it. i can’t believe this is news to you guys. it was all over the place! it happened. and there were stories about how awful it was that happened for years afterward. this is NOT news! it’s been mentioned repeatedly in lots of places, and it seems to me there was something about it in that movie Forest Gump.
i’m not making this up, and i’m certainly not condoning it nor did i participate, i protested the WAR, not the troops, but SOME protested the troops! on college campuses. Please don’t be “outa here”.
please?
pax!?
ummmmm. sorta feels like someone’s shooting the messenger here.
This is why I don’t believe it besides I was in those protests
Debunking A Myth
I could go on and on….
I hated the war, but never the soldiers. I do remember thinking that if the young men were brave and principled enough that they would go to Canada or Mexico. I remember my boyfriend and I watching the lottery, and he was lucky. My brothers were too young to be in the lottery then, but my Dad and I supported them in splitting rather than serving. That was “69.
My thinking has changed.
I don’t think it’s about shooting the messenger. All I asked is where and when did you see with your own eyes what you saw. I’m sure there were people who were unkind to returning soldiers, but most of us just wanted them back. And some mythology undermines best efforts. For example, it’s ‘fun’ to talk about women burning bras. I don’t know that that happened either. Talking about people spitting on returning vets might just be another distraction. Like flag pins, goofy pastors, hand-over-heart…..you know, just distracting from the reality that needed to be addressed and now needs to be addressed. McCain may have multiple health issues that would impact his ability to govern. Truth should be the issue. Always.
Thought you’d enjoy that one. My own reaction was something akin to my jaw dropping on the floor. Glad to see I wasn’t off base there.
I was up to my eyeballs in it…. 4 cousins, a uncle, my ex-husband and I was actively recruited as any nurse who graduated during the war was nearly included in the draft. My ex served 12 years active duty and never once did I hear this story from ANY military…. These family members were Army, Marines and USAF…. all served at least one tour and all but one served two…. all from different areas in the country….
ok, and thank you for that katy. i SAW these things happen. i’m sorry if this was offensive to anyone here, but I SAW these things happen, in person and on film. maybe it was the media blowing things out of proportion, and i do believe that what i saw was the odd and unusual behavior (which i think has some truth, i’m not even saying that it was the norm), but i saw this and experienced it first hand. and it’s not completely myth! i always thought that pelosi and others were making such a huge issue of honoring the troops because of that response then, another unpopular war, and all the protests and this issue/behavior etc., i assumed they were making it all VERY CLEAR how we feel about our troops in response to that behavior when it happened.
oh dear. i may be making things worse, but that happened. i wish it didn’t, but it did.
One or two Vietnam vets where I work have related such stories, but not being a veteran I’ve never felt inclined to interrogate them much about when or where this happened, or whether there were corroborating witnesses. All I know is that they thought it had happened to them, or to someone they knew.
i was in one where we burned our bras too. that’s not a myth either.
lookit, i WILL admit to some great drugs back then, BUT….
i didn’t imagine any of this or hallucinate it. these are not myths. omg.
they were events that took place. i respect your opinions here, but there’s film of both of these things. i’ll try and find it, it’s definately out there somewhere. it’s on film. both bra burning AND disrespecting returning vets. there’s film of that somewhere! i’m not so interested in proving me right as i am somewhat alarmed that this is seeming to be “debunked” as not true. it’s something that was awful and painful (not the bra burning, THAT felt good!) and in the interest of learning from history, i think it should not be forgotten, discarded or ignored or denied.
Jeebus, I hope this subject never comes up again.
Have ta keep them safe from enemas, foreign and domestic.
The wages of colonialism.
Toxic megacolonialism!
Huh. Were you a polyp-sci major?
not from me….
btw David is upstairs
No, my education was a waste.
me too. i am sorry. i feel horrible. i did google this and it’s presented totally as myth. there’s something disturbing about that, as it DID happen. i’m so sorry for bringing it up.
i am sorry. i regret bringing this up. the treatment of this subject on google does, however, remind me of the treatment afforded to the American Indian Wars. Like it’s ugly, so let’s pretend it never happened.
Anyway, I AM sorry if I disturbed anyone in here.
Acutally, I am sorry I ever had to see that in my lifetime.
“disrespecting returning vets”
Don’t forget that some of that distrepect came in to form of planting flase flags, a.k.a provocateurs, amongst principled soldiers returning from Viet Nam while they spoke truth to power in the streets of D.C..
In fact the idea that an event like that of Robert Kennedy’s tragic assassination would have NO RELEVANCE to her continued running. If something like that happened, an assassination or an accident, the likelihood would be that she’d be the strongest contender during a Convention. And that would have been true two months ago as it is today.
The fact that Hillary’s using this argument is disingenuous as well as crass. Her entire motive is something else OTHER than this. She should be up front about what she’s doing.
Eli —
Way late to the party, and now I can’t stay long . . . but this post is truly delightful. As one who is accustomed to dealing with people who have hyphenated names, they are justifiably offended if one part of their name is dropped off. No doubt the lobbyist-campaign manager, lobbyist-campaign advisor, lobbyist-reporter, and lobbyist-nursing communities are grateful for your consistent affirmation of both parts of their identity.
Oh, and the “double pastorectomy” part is great, too.
Maybe this would have been the year that an atheist or agnostic could have done pretty well ;-)
Yeah, I was thinking the exact same thing, which is why this whole conversation has completely mystified me.
Thanks, Peterr!
I wish. But the problem is that the dems started pandering to the religious folk back in the 06 cycle. The best answer to the religious questions is still what the repug. candidate, Vinick said in the West Wing.
My brother came back and had a bottle thrown at him from a passing car. He thought it was because he still had his hair shorn. But I have to admit I had something similar happen to me (a rock that actually hit me) two years later and I had a regular freak flag flying. He blamed hippies (though he later became one) and I blamed “the Fascists”.
According to the three-minutes-old article on the NYT website,
*ahem* what about February?
And what other scheiss are you trying to shovel at us, NYT????????
I should have made it clear that I was speaking about if she had suspended her campaign two months ago…or after Pennsylvania the likelihood of her winning the nomination would have been strong if something occurred that prevented the actual nominee (Obama) from continuing. She would have clearly have been the second choice of most Obama delegates, and the primary choice of her own. So why didn’t she drop out if this “backup” strategy was in her thoughts.
But todays comment, and the inexplicability of continuing to run when there is no benefit is perplexing and confounding. There must be some other motivation…to either damage Obama so badly that he “becomes” unelectable to her supporters…which compels the Super Delegates to look to her. OR to taint Obama so badly that he fails to win in the General Election, opening the door to her running again in 2012.
I think we were on the same page to begin with. I don’t see what marginal benefit staying in the race gives her in that nightmare scenario. Who exactly is it that she’d be trying to stay in front of?
There are three possible explanations for the RFK comment:
1) Simple stupidity and epically poor judgment (if primaries extending into June are so common, was that *really* the best example she could think of?).
2) Last-ditch attempt to scare people away from voting for Obama ‘cuz he might get shot.
3) A reveal of her heretofore-secret “vice-nominee” strategy. Not only do I find the strategy implausible, but I find the idea that she would actually *admit* to such a strategy even more implausible.
I don’t know for sure whether it’s 1 or 2, but it’s sure as hell not 3.
