The Chinese are apparently taking a supervisory role in overseeing their investment.
U.S. military personnel at Guantanamo Bay allegedly softened up detainees at the request of Chinese intelligence officials who had come to the island facility to interrogate the men — or they allowed the Chinese to dole out the treatment themselves, according to claims in a new government report.
Buried in a Department of Justice report released Tuesday are new allegations about a 2002 arrangement between the United States and China, which allowed Chinese intelligence to visit Guantanamo and interrogate Chinese Uighurs held there.
According to the report by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine, an FBI agent reported a detainee belonging to China’s ethnic Uighur minority and a Uighur translator told him Uighur detainees were kept awake for long periods, deprived of food and forced to endure cold for hours on end, just prior to questioning by Chinese interrogators.
Susan Manning, a lawyer who represents several Uighurs still held at Guantanamo, said Tuesday the allegations are all too familiar.
U.S. personnel "are engaging in abusive tactics on behalf of the Chinese," she said Tuesday. When Uighur detainees refused to talk to Chinese interrogators in 2002, U.S. military personnel put them in solitary confinement as punishment, she said.
"Why are we doing China’s dirty work?" Manning said. "Surely we’re better than that."
Ms. Manning are you forgetting who the President and Vice-President are? Sadly, it’s par for the course.
This occurred during the period of time in which the Bush Administration was rife with people who took the belief that Muslim equaled possible terrorist. You know, like today.
But while Buddhist Tibet generates the headlines, the Uighur (or Uyghurs) are a less known, but no less repressed culture within China, located in a territory with the rather awkward "Mao-tastic" name of the "Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region" [which in fairness may just be chinese for "South Dakota"] in the far west of the country and bordering Afghanistan amongst other places. It is in Afghanistan where these individuals were swept up by American forces [along with many others who were not terrorists, but bounty-victims of various warlords taking advantage of American gullibility].
So via the Bush Administration and GITMO we’ve not only turned our back on the ideals we espouse for our own culture, but we’ve farmed ourselves out to be agents of another country’s repression.
The Bush Administration, always the merde touch?

Christ will it ever end?
Good morning Attaturk and thanks for the informative post.
New depths of despicability!
Hey, look on the bright side. Gitmo sent the five Uighurs they released to Albania instead of sending them back to China for their seven grams.
But that’s just haggling about the price, isn’t it?
OT – here are just a few of the congressional hearings scheduled for today (details, links and full list):
Things are going well in bushdom. Now they can say that they are not the only ones that
tortureuse enhanced interrogation techniques “see other people do it to so can it be all that bad”.Will it ever end? No, not without impeachment so maybe we should impeach that fucking pelosi madwoman as she is the classic enabler.
I swear that clinton2 is only still mucking about as a distraction from all the bullshit coming out of Washington. She is in the pay of the MIC and is doing their dirty work for them. Business as usual.
Morning all.

Citizen Mr.Cbl:
“Christ will it ever end?”
It will only end after treason, war crimes, profiteering and obstruction of justice trials and convictions and subsequent peace and reconcilliation trials. If we don’t finish the job like we didn’t after Watergate and after Iran Contra and even after the Civil War…well, if we don’t there will not be closure and the same players will come back with the same old rotten game. We have an opportunity here to breakup a 150 year oligarchy of families and at the same time dismantle the apparatus, namely the corporation, that has been the vehicle for the transfer of wealth and power from the nation and its people to the few. But it only happens with criminal trials, convictions and sentences…a lotta folks hafta go ta jail and a lot more have gotta go broke before we are done with the bastards.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE FUCKIN AMMUNITION AND TAKE NO GOD DAMNED PRISONERS!!
norske – do you see obama being a help or a hinderance? do you think he will aide in the covering up or in the opening up?
Morning Norske.
Now if only some, or even one, of our elected representatives would have the balls to say the same thing……….
Not a fuckinghope I am afraid. We are stuck with the corporatocracy until we take to the streets and that is not gong to happen any time soon. I will be dead and cremated well before this country is released from the grip of the MIC
Obama1 will enter the bubble. He will make a few noises and then will “heal the nation” by eschewing prosecutions and trials of the people that really count. There may well be some low level investigations maybe even resulting in Yoo resigning his professorship to take over Goldman Sachs or some other crooked company. In a few years Obama1 will be a multi millionaire and will give a sweet shit about anything other than his own welfare.
It’s all bullshit. . .don’t mean nothin.

Citizen Selise and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“…do you thinki he (obama) will hep in the covering up or in the opening up?”
Well, my kids call me Mr. Optimist who has far too much hope and faith in his fellow humans (especially Amerikanz) and that gives pause because both of the older ones are teachers who are committed to all students and their ability to experience the life of the mind. The younger one is an undergraduate in Counseling and Child Psych who works 4 days a week with autistic kids and has been recovering from an eating disorder, so she’s much more committed to people and change than am I but she too thinks I’m a Pollyanna. So take this with a grain of sumpthin (and maybe a glass a good wine) but I think that if you listen to Obama and make the connections between his experience and the collective history of the people from whence he springs, you begin to see a consistency of understanding of the history of injustice and the links of injustice with wealth and power. Further, it is part of Obama’s living history to see people as collectively more than the some of their numbers which mitigates against a very well developed sense of individuality and reflects an understanding of the power of collective, NONVIOLENT action.
Unless Obama owes something to forces we have yet to see, his only debt is to his and our collective history and the imperative of hope and the power of collective action. He is truly a different kind of politician because he is a leader who is willing to be propelled as far as his constituency is willing to carry him. In other words, it’s up to us to see to it that Mr. Obama takes the right path…and I think we will.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, WE HAVE A LEADER NOW WE HAFTA TELL ‘IM WHERE WE WANNA GO!!!
‘Morning Norske,
In my heart of hearts there remains a glimmer of optimism. I am a proud American. A proud veteran. I believe I was raised in a country whose citizens would stand in the street and fight, to the death if necessary, to defend our home and our people. I am ready to take to the streets and refuse to believe I am alone.
Oh yeah….oil @ almost $130. a barrel.
And while I am on a rant; I will not listen to any pants wetting, hide under the bed coward disparage Senator Kennedy. 46 years of selfless service to his country when the cold hard reality is he never needed to work a day in his life. A long career devoted to the betterment of the working people, the less fortunate, those who happen to be born with brown skin. (end rant and thanks for letting me vent)
I am numb, and grow more numb with each revelation, this administration has caused battered wife syndrome on me
where just about each of these reports should have brought investigation into impeachment on their own, they have smaller and smaller impact with each new crime revealed
I cannot express my disgust, utter disgust with pelosi and our leadership
our other elected officials could have forced her hand, she is not alone in her lack of action and I consider them all accomplices in the crimes they are now a party
200 before the year is out is a safe bet
well, norske, i hope you are right and nomolos is wrong. but i confess that i see things more along the lines of what nomolos describes. now, if we were electing the good rev. wright i’d have more hope.
but thanks for the optimism, it’s always good to hear the genuine thing from someone who’s grounding is in reality.
on the other hand they could be engineering a crash, wait until the masses are investing in their own doom, actually banking on the increase in oil price and then boom, they all sell and flood the market
either way, we lose
yup.
Off to work. Will be lurking. Hope y’all have a comfortable day.

Citizen Mr. Cbl:
“I an ready to take to the streets and refuse to believe I am alone.”
Brother Cbl, you are never alone, not as long as I and your brothers in arms draw breath. This shakes me up becuase tonight at dinner I had a similar conversation with my two older children and apologized for my generation’s leavin ‘em in the mess we have left ‘em. It got a bit heated because neither one of ‘em had enough faith in their fellow citizens to believe that Obama could possibly win. “There are too many racists and haters and scared, ignorant people in our country” was their take on the situation. Finally, in exasperation, I told ‘em that I would try and energize enough of the people who had experienced the last wave of hope and people power (the ’60’s) and would try and show the youngsters that collective civil action is like love, sex and drugs…you and your partners are never the same.
KEEP THE FAITH BROTHER, AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, WE WILL BE CALLED ONE MORE TIME BEFORE THIS IS OVER!!
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo and Friedman today. MoDo’s column is titled “The Last Debate,” and she says Hillary Clinton has been a great candidate, better than her train-wreck campaign. But now it’s time for her to try to muster a gracious exit. She manages to get that thought into a sentence in the middle of one of her catty imagined dialogues… Mr. Friedman writes about “Imbalances of Power,” and says it is hard to remember a time when more shifts in the global balance of power are happening at once — with so few in America’s favor.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are all ready, and I’ve got waffles this morning. Take your pick of maple syrup or honey butter, or have a bit of both. Hoover, the new kitty, did well at the vet’s and was groggy last night. He’s starting to explore the area we have him in this morning. He’s being segregated for the first 3 days, at the vet’s suggestion. He’s a real sweetie, and if I managed to do this right, here are a few pix of his first hours with us, all groggy and sleepy. (Let me know, please, if that link doesn’t show you pictures…I’m a complete newbie at the uploading thing.)
This 62 year old, somewhat arthritic, DFH will stand by your side.
When I first arrived in this country Ted Kennedy took on a law case for me. I called his office out of the blue, at the behest of my sister, and after explaining the matter, got a phone call back a few HOURS later from Ted himself. To cut a long story short, he saw an injustice being done to an immigrant, with no money or standing and took up the case. It took three years to resolve (in my favour) It cost me not a penny as he paid for everything. There is more to the story but all I have to say is I could not immagine, in my wildest dreams, anyone so selfless. Years later, when I was trying to become a citizen there was a long waiting line. He got me in within days and I voted for him….. one of the proudest moments in my life.
I am in this country still because of that man.
I wish I had the optimism of Norske but I am afraid that I am stuck in a reality bubble
I really don’t know myself…but my sense is that the right is going to rollout everything they can against Obama because they don’t know either. Who were they really going after in the Primaries…in terms of acts…not words.
YES…they kept saying that Obama was the weaker candidate…but why bolster Clinton? And recall that is was a former CIA black ops guy that went after Obama according to McClatchy.
My suspicion is the kid who experienced the great Suharto mass-killings of millions is gonna have a whole different take on this than Gerald Ford and Henry Kissinger (who then turned him loose on East Timor). In some respects Obama reminds me of a young Nelson Mandela…and his model was a Peace & Reconciliation Commission that required full confessions before the victims. If not, then there was a trial with no hope of amnesty or pardon.
The link is purrfect
Thanks! He is a sweetie — he was purring in his sleep last night.
He is, it seems, what my wife calls a contentacat
Morning Attaturk and firepups,
I keep thinking we can’t sink any lower, and yet Bush proves me wrong over and over again. I hope we actually make it till the Inauguration.
Ouch! That Dowd column was absolutely psychotic…it’s like she has spent all her time assimilating the Republicon Borg trolls that stroll into the blogosphere and drop those sort of bombs. I think I see more than a bit of MoDo’s own persona coming through in her caricatures of the two candidates. She’s one evil, resentful and scared person.
Thanks for the waffles and the pics. He’s a pretty kitty! He looks quite at home all ready, hope your Siamese Empress keeps her nose in joint…
Morning Attaturk, great post (again) :)
Morning everyone :) Happy whatever day it is today…
opps forgot, Dugggggg :)
She snuck into the room where he is yesterday, while he was still all groggy, and they stared at each other, she hissed and was removed, and he growled for a while. I’m sure the real fireworks will start when they’re all sharing all of the house…
thank you for sharing that. good to know and reason to give me a bit of hope.
marion – thank you for the hoover pics. what a doll!
Yes, we’ve gone long on prison capacity and other countries can outsource torture services to the U.S. (reverse rendition services). What a country!
That is a great story. Welcome to the USA (belated I know) and thank you for sharing that experience. Camelot was not perfect; the legacy is a vision to cherish. You just added.
the behavioral kitty docs recommend a treat (like tuna) to get them used to each other – like being on opposites sides of a closed or almost closed door.
here’s Washington Journal this morning:
7:30 am – Christopher Hayes, The Nation, Washington Editor
8:00 am – Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) 7th District, Energy & Commerce Committee, Member [OH JOY!]
8:30 am – Dr. Elias Zerhouni, National Institutes of Health, Director
9:30 am – Newspaper Articles & Viewer Calls
That is a pretty kitty :)
here’s a rough transcript of a few bits from yesterday’s grit tv with chris hedges that i think is important to consider:
The REALITY will be what WE make it. It will be up to us to push and KEEP pushing for truth and justice…We can WIN, we just have to keep going….
but that won’t happen if we continue to stand by the democratic party and make excuses for it’s leaders. i think hedges is right about that bit.
marathon, not a sprint, marathon, not a sprint, marathon, not a sprint.
*doing limbering warmups*
It’s a cross country run.
At this moment it is most important to get a Dem into the White House and stay on-top of each and everyone, who is ‘in charge’ regardless of which ‘party’ is on their letterhead…
LOL, trotting right along with you Elliot..:)
Oh Boy! The delightful Marsha Blackburn (Dunce-Tn), possibly the dumbest person in Congress and with the present crop that is saying quite a bit. She will be quick to blame the entire gasoline price problem on the Democrats as she does every day at the one minute speeches. I hope truly hope she is more likable in person than she is on television, otherwise this woman has some real issues.
i don’t disagree that mccain is a danger to humanity and the planet. but i am sick and tired of hearing “at this moment is it most important to get a dem into….” i’d have more sympathy for that argument if it wasn’t ALWAYS the argument for putting other concerns aside.
no more.
Right, I ain’t wasting the time watching her. There’s NOTHING, absolutely nothing, worth listening to that comes out of her mouth.
excellent article from tom dispatch:
tom englehardt:
mark engler:
So the codger is going to be OK with Chicoms on an American Naval Base “interrogating” secret prisoners. That will play well in Texas.
Norske, It’s great to see you say that. I remember a few heated exchanges we had when Edwards was still in, and you were railing on Barak O’Lieberman, and I was trying to say exactly what you said above about Obama, only I was much less poetic.
It’s been really uplifting to see so many Dems rally behind Barack. That’s been the big question with him – will he “put our national nightmare behind us,” or become the Neocons own nightmare? He has a chance to end the cabal once and for all, but as said above, he does a lot of compromising along the way. Once he’s in power, maybe he won’t feel the need to compromise so much? I do think deep down he’s very Liberal, so maybe he understands the thousands upon thousands of lives at stake on how he handles this issue. I hope his mother’s influence will guide him.
Hear, here!
Nomolos,
Thanks for sharing the story.
Hear, hear!
Scarecrow is up with a new thread: Clinton and Obama Reach Out: Can They Prevent A War?
if it’s Wednesday it, it must be Scarecrow upstairs
*hands Bilbo coke*
Tnx Elliott. ;=)
(((((HUGGING NOMOLOS)))))
Another reason to love Ted Kennedy! You’re still here. ;-)
I’m not a Dem or a Repub. I can’t even vote, so I hope you all chose wisely. I don’t CARE which party ANYONE belongs to. Put the right people in the right place and go from there. Fighting over ‘titles’ is counter productive. The bad folks need to be gone and a HUGE mess needs to be cleaned up…
Peace :)
peace jackie. i don’t think i’m wise enough to choose well, my best effort is to try to provide some oversight and accountability.
Thanks for sharing your story, Nomolos
…but I have to *sigh* at the thought that it takes “knowing someone” to get anything done…
Well, this is all part of the payback.
Back in 2001, China brought down a US recon plane, and held it until Bush “apologized”.
You don’t think that all they wanted was a tight-lipped “we’re sorry!” do you?
When faced with a real crisis, involving a major world power, Bush caved.
More disturbing, what else did he cave on, but we just haven’t found out about yet?
How do we respond to these outrages? Can we start by demanding responses right now from our candidates on how they intend to stop these practices and punish the perpetrators?
Will this make the headline of any major news organization, or will any politician be called to account in any way?
The system is so broken that I really am in despair of it ever being fixed.
