As the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs was holding a hearing on veterans’ healthcare, we sat down with Iraq vet Kris Goldsmith of Long Island who chose to take his own life rather than be "stop-lossed." Kris puts a face on the latest, horrific, government statistic, namely, that
deaths from suicide may exceed combat deaths among soldiers who’ve served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Watch this interview sitting down, then get up and DO SOMETHING.
Also on today’s program, we’ll speak to advocates for workers who, like most, are working more and earning less. Plus an interview with an optimistic hitman, and videos from United Farm Workers, Movement Vision Lab and Everybody Got Issues. It’s all right here on firedoglake.

Mahalo, Laura for bringing this issue to the forefront! 8-)
Laura,
Your reports are getting better. The military suicide issue is very important. Is this going to become a daily feauture at firedoglake? I hope so!
It already is! Hi there, ET.
This is great. I’m about to add a feature to my web page that links to TV with real news, like TPM Veracifier and Democracy Now. I’ve thought Laura was great on the radio, but this is even better. Does it come on at the same time every day?
Sorry, I’m not caught up here. We’re putting on the Alaska Democratic Party Convention beginning tomorrow, and putting in hours and hours and….it will be worth it.
This time slot seems to be regular.. Also several other segments posted throughout most days. Broadcast on DISH television – Free Speech TV network, I think. (Sorry, I don’t know more.. on DirecTV here)
I received an email recently from a person connected to the AFL-CIO of Maine/New Hampshire and this person told me that in Maine….4 people have committed suicide after losing their union job. Nice huh? Four is way too many! And the thought of our soldiers taking their lives more often than soldiers killed in action is unbearable to think about. All for what again? Oh that’s right…all on a pack of lies for the benefit of a few at the top.
Thanks Laura for this report.
Thanks, ET, for the hours, days, weeks, months you have worked for the good of Alaska and America.
Hey ET
We want to hear all about the convention!
I think Grit doesn’t produce on Fridays [weekends = ?]
I’ll be writing about it a lot, if the Anchorage Daily News doesn’t shut down my blog….
Have a great progressive convention ET. Missed you lately but sounds like you have a lot on your plate(score) as usual.*g*
Another great episode of GritTV. Thanks Laura and the rest of the crew.
Timmeh, your shallowness and incompetence are showing. Jus’ saying.
FYI, New post upstairs.
My way of doing something is to remind the faithful that the presumptive (D) candidate for President plans to continue some kind of occupation-lite indefinitely, using plenty of costly, vile mercenaries.
According to Jeremy Scahill, correspondent for Democracy Now! and therefore hopefully someone of sufficiently high-status for doubters to pause for a moment and listen to:
so that is about half of the current troop levels that have been generating all these tragic suicides.
Maybe the rate of US casualties will drop by half, as well – to a mere 50,000 per year if the numbers from a recent RAND survey are to be beleived:
So how about that – indefinite continuation of the US occupation of Iraq under the administration of President Obama will only result in (50,000 x 8) 400,000 more American casualties during an 8 year term of office.
A real antiwar candidate could simply say, after 12 months of my first term of office, there will be zero American casualties, because I will end the occupation. And the American people would support that, at this point.
But we don’t have the chance to support that, because right now no candidate is saying that.
So for those who despise war and its despoilation more than they are infatuated by the electoral triumphs of some political faction, the choice is easy – don’t vote for or support a candidate who promises 400,000 more pointless maimings of American soldiers.
