Announcing a special Blue America time tomorrow to welcome back our friend Larry Kissell, Congressional candidate from the eighth district of North Carolina. NC-08 in '08!
President Bush will be coming to his district Thursday to give out medals at Ft Bragg. You would think the President would be ashamed to show up there because their substandard housing has been much in the news lately.
Let's hear from a progressive Democrat how things really are for the returning troops. Larry has shown real leadership in reaching out to those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The contrast between his actions and the lack of support from the Bush administration is clear.
Kissell got national attention during his 2006 race, when he lost to the incumbent by only about 300 votes, by having an event where gasoline was sold for $1.22 a gallon, the price at the beginning of the Bush administration. That sure seems hard to believe now, with gas pushing $4 a gallon.
Larry will be with us to answer our questions on how things are going in his district, which has suffered greatly from decisions made by this administration. They have one of the highest rates of unemployment in the area and a lot of people are facing foreclosure on their homes.
I have talked with Larry by phone and feel that his concern for the folks in his district and his love for our country are genuine. You want a true grassroots progressive candidate? Kissell is the real thing.
We're eager to hear his plans for the future and how his terrific campaign with hundreds of volunteers is going. So join us tomorrow at 6:00 ET, 3:00 PT for what promises to be a great Blue America session!

Yay, Larry!
Hi, eg!
With Bush coming to the district on Thursday, this is a great opportunity for Larry to get the word out about real support for the troops.
This is a district with a lot of active duty and retired military, many of whom have been treated poorly by this administration. Bush comes to NC for a photo op, but won’t do anything more for them.
We need better leadership in Washington — Kissell will be part of that.
egregious,
thanks for recommending one more and better Democrat.
They’re starting to add up.
If you get a medal from the president, does that get you a bonus like a base housing unit that is up to building codes?
No.
This is another case of simple answers…
Digg!
Bush going to the district may backfire for the Repuglicans. It did in my district in 2006, I believe.
Maybe the substandard housing is to make the troops feel grateful to be sent back to the war zone. This is how we show our respect to them?
((((( eg )))))
Bush43 was following Pappy’s shameful policies … during the first Gulf War, the U.S. Soldiers had to pay for accommodations while in the Desert fighting for “our freedom”. Because of this, they had no money to pay their mortgages, so while they were fighting in Kuwait, their families were being evicted from their homes … cousin of mine was a Sergeant at the time …
They did get Whitney Houston to sing a moving ‘tribute’ to the troops, though … too bad the American public did not know how “moved” the troops were, literally …
U.S.A. !!! U.S.A. !!! /s
I’m surprised Bush doesn’t have Halliburton constructing overpriced no-bid palaces for the troops…
BushcoActually, they would probably build shoddy hovels and just bill the government for overpriced palaces…
Ding.
Every chance they’ve had to truly support the Troops, Bush41 & 43 have done the opposite … they should be prosecuted but this Congress doesn’t even have the backbone to stop telecom immunity …
We used to say with a medal you could get hard d*ck and bubble gum and they were fresh out of bubble gum.
It is sick isn’t it…
eg, thank you - without FDL, we would not know there are more and better democrats running for congress.
dugg, thanks neuro
Cake and c*ck and they were fresh out of cake.
I read in the local paper today that Bush may veto the new GI Bill, which would expand educational benefits for veterans. One of Bush’s objections to the bill apparently is that it includes a tax increase on people making more than $500,000 to pay for the benefits. $500,000!
Bush knows how to take care of his friends. Support the troops, indeed.
Sounds like a good subject for a full-page ad.
Although I did not serve in the military, I respect those who did. I will be interested to hear what Larry Kissell has to say on the subject.
Suzanne, yesterday you asked me how we would frame the anger issue. I don’t have an answer off the top of my head but I’m workin’ on it. The main stumbling block is if any Dem prez since FDR was prone to displays of anger (and stuff like that wasn’t reported until the last few years) so I’m gonna have to do some research. We know Nixon had his days but using him as an example probably wouldn’t do McCain much good. If the Rethugs can point out that Dem prez whoever had such a reputation amongst insiders I’m afraid it would be a wash. But I’m workin’ on it.
Bush seems more brazen and callous each and every day…I didn’t think it possible….
Worst Person in the World
I do think there has been alot of press about Clinton anger/temper. I am not sure it is the same demeaning, out of control outburst we hear about McC. But quite a bit has been written with many folks with tales to tell.
He’s got nothing to lose. That alone makes him very dangerous.
Terry Gross was interviewing Jim Webb on NPR today, and she asked him about Bush’s veto threat. Webb’s reply was something to the effect of “It would be the first time in US history that a president vetoed a veterans benefits bill, and if Bush wants to add that to his legacy, that’s his choice.”
Link to Fresh Air site to listen to the interview.
Exactly. The layers have peeled away one by one by one…each worse than the next…he’s ruthless. I thought Cheney was bad, but I think W will prove to be worse in the end. He has no conscience whatsoever.
Yep. It’s not just a matter of having a short fuse. There are valid reasons to blow your stack when staff screw important stuff up. It’s not simple. And pattern is a huge factor.
Bush is the Meddler in Chief. He can’t stand not to be the center of adulation or attention. Witness his petulant response to NBC’s Richard Engel.
Thanks for the heads-up for the day-planner, eg!
In the spirit of the Senate’s Liberal Lion, instead of cyber candle flames, let’s be Liberal Lion Cubs for Change > More and Better Democrats

My community radio station gets it a day later so I have to wait until tomorrow. The evening news played a teaser just a few minutes ago. We get it free that way, I think. We raised $2M to build a new station so we gotta watch pennies for a while.
I think Darth has not receded as far into the background as many believe. He doesn’t need a public presence to pull the strings of the puppet.
Webb was interesting on David Letterman last night. David asked him about his bronze stars, silver star and Navy Cross medals. Webb said they were all “combat medals.” He seemed embarrassed when Letterman asked what they were for, especially when David started reading the actual criteria for the Navy Cross…
Wikipedia:
“The Navy Cross may be awarded to any member of the armed forces while serving with the Marine Corps, Navy, or Coast Guard (in time of war only) who distinguishes himself in action by extraordinary heroism not justifying an award of the Medal of Honor. The action must take place under one of three circumstances:
1. While engaged in action against an enemy of the United States
2. While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force
3. While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict in which the United States is not a belligerent party.
To earn a Navy Cross the act to be commended must be performed in the presence of great danger or at great personal risk and must be performed in such a manner as to render the individual highly conspicuous among others of equal grade, rate, experience, or position of responsibility.”
“
And cruelty at the core: that’s why he could mawk and chottle when he was letting Karla Faye Tucker be put to death. Ruthless, indeed.
That would be chortle

Gotta go feed the lazy lap lump predators.
OT, NBC/MSNBC calling Kentucky for Clinton by “significant” margin
Imagine that.
thanks sd :) looking forward to your thoughts on it
Cliff’s got some election results upstairs at the new post.
Sorry I’m so late to the party. I’ve been at a thing in manhattan all day. No toobz!
Of course I’m happy to have you guys stay here and talk about politics in North Carolina, Kentucky, Oregon, or anywhere else!
Hey loosehead! How was the shindig today?
((QuakerGirl))
Andy Cuomo previewed his stump speech for when he runs again for Governor. It was a pretty good speech, sorta pep rallyish, well delivered, but it lacked a sufficient # of applause lines.
Since it was a lunch for New York women in politics, you can imagine some of the simmering rage in the room. Not rage that Hillary is losing, in politics that’s part of the equation.
But just pure blood boiling rage at how the media has treated her and some of the dismissive language Obama uses when he talks about women of a certain age who didn’t desert her.
Someone pointed out that it is similar to the dismissive language he used in Pennsylvania when he talked about frustrated people turning to guns and religion.
Like women and working class people didn’t vote for someone other than him as a conscious informed choice, but because they were too ignorant, or too frustrated, or too estrogen drenched to know that there there was a better choice.
This was room full women office holders, women big donors, and women senior volunteers and organizers–in other words, the backbone of the party in a reliably blue state with a whopping number of electoral college votes. And these party leaders feel like they have been shunted off to sit in the corner while the menfolk take care of business.
Quaker Girl, I want you to know that you are often in my thoughts. I wish there was something useful I could do for you.
FWIW, the Lexington Herald-Leader is showing McCain with 74% of the GOPer vote with Paul (7%), Huckabee (6%), Romney (5%), and Uncommitted (6%) all siphoning votes.
Here we go again, eh? Can McCan’t close the deal?
He’s losing votes to uncommitted? Hee hee hee
This sounds like sour grapes to me. If Clinton were winning, I think a lot of the anger on the part of her supporters would not be there nor these issues raised. The truth is that Clinton ran the race she wanted. The choices and mistakes were very much her own. It is natural if not commendable in the event of her losing to see external factors involved.
