As if the Republican prospects for the fall elections were not bad enough, it now seems the Republican Party has been asked to bail out John McCain's deficient fund raising. And what's more insulting, McCain and the Republicans intend to rely on George Bush, the most unpopular President since Richard Nixon, to put the squeeze on lobbyists to replenish their coffers. From the New York Times:
To confront the Obama juggernaut, Senator John McCain, whose fund-raising has badly trailed that of his Democratic counterparts — and whose efforts suffered a blow this weekend when a key fund-raiser, Tom Loeffler, resigned because of a new campaign policy on conflicts of interest — is leaning on the Republican National Committee.
Mr. McCain is likely to depend upon the party, which finished April with an impressive $40 million in the bank and has significantly higher contribution limits, to an unprecedented degree to power his campaign, Republican officials said.
To that end, Republican officials said they were enlisting President Bush, a formidable fund-raiser who has raised more than $36 million this year for Republican candidates and committees, for three events on Mr. McCain’s behalf. They will appear together at a fund-raiser in Phoenix on May 27, and the next day the president will take part in a luncheon with Mitt Romney in Salt Lake City and then an exclusive dinner at Mr. Romney’s vacation home in Park City, Utah. . . .
Mr. McCain, who abandoned public financing in the primary but has indicated he would employ it in the general election, is aggressively building a joint fund-raising operation with the Republican National Committee and state party committees in four battleground states. These committees can raise money far in excess of the $2,300 limit imposed on individuals giving to Mr. McCain’s presidential campaign. Donors can write a single check of almost $70,000 to the committees that is divvied up to various entities.
So here's the picture: John McCain, who once touted himself as the champion of campaign finance reform, will use his Party's ability to raise money for his election, while skirting the campaign limits that would apply to McCain's individual fundraising. While he tries to convince the electorate he's not tied to Bush's policies or presidency, nor influenced by lobbyists, McCain will benefit from millions of dollars from lobbyist donations via Bush's fundraisers.
So Bush shakes down America's business community, while the White House pulls the strings of one of the most pro-business anti-regulatory regimes we've ever experienced. A cynical person might fear our government will be for sale this fall, and McCain's campaign will be funded by practices barely distinguishable from extortion. Do you think the media will ask McCain how this works? [Update: Today's Times editorial calls on McCain to release Cindy McCain's tax returns. (h/t TobyWollin)]
Meanwhile, Barack Obama has raised nearly $40,000,000 a month, partly from large donations but much of it from over 1.5 million individual donors contributing less that $100 each. He's redefined "public financing." Obama and Senator Clinton are also organizing for joint fund raising with the Democratic Party, but unlike McCain, it's likely the Democratic nominee will help carry the Party.
Out on the trail, Bill and Chelsea Clinton were in Portland, Salem and Ashland Oregon yesterday, after Hillary had moved on to Kentucky. Obama spoke to a few folks about Social Security -- and then drew another 75,000 others along the river in Portland. More pictures via HuffPo, and the Washington Post.

Welcome back, Scarecrow. Missed you last week.
Scarecrow!
It’s hard to understand how Bush can be a “formidable fund-raiser” at this point.
Yay! he’s back!
refreshed and restuffed?
Has McCain released his medical records ? Wasn’t he going to release them May 15th ?
I don’t know about that, but the NYTimes this morning in an editorial is calling for Miss CindyLou to release her tax records.
The picture is truly remarkable. Exactly antithetical to the always staged Bush appearances. What a refreshing change.
Can’t you just see Bush walking into a GOP-run K Street lobbying firm, looking around the office, and saying “Wow. Mahogany paneled walls and granite counters in the washrooms. Nice place you’ve got here. It’d be a pity if something were to happen to it. Like, f’rinstance, a democrat getting my job.
“Hey, did you hear that the RNC is looking for some donors to help out poor John McCain?”
I think they’re in the same drawer as Sindy’s tax returns. They’ve got a lot of papers, so let’s cut them some slack, ‘kay?
it’s exciting!
Another picture of Obama in Oregon.
From the editorial.
Did Teresa ever release her returns?
Well, it’s hard to find that many people in one place who they’d vet as being pro-Bush…

Teresa Heinz Kerry Releases Part of Her 2003 Tax Return
Heinz_kerryForm_1040_2
Teresa Heinz Kerry on Friday released a portion of her 2003 federal tax return, reporting that she paid $627k in federal income taxes on $2.3 million of AGI, primarily from dividends and interest. She received $5.1 million of gross income, $2.8 million of it tax exempt interest income. Ms. Heinz Kerry, who filed separately from Senator Kerry, thus paid federal income tax at the rate of 12.3% of her gross income and 27.4% of her AGI. She refers to herself as “Teresa Heinz” on the tax return and lists her occupation as “philanthropist.” For the Kerry campaign’s accompanying press release, see here.
Unlike President & Laura Bush, Vice President Dick & Lynne Cheney, and Sen. Kerry (here and here), who have released their entire 2003 returns (but not all accompanying statements), Ms. Heinz Kerry released just the front two pages of Form 1040, as did Senator John & Elizabeth Edwards.
And the editorial also states that,
As the spouse of a relatively low-level (non executive service) Federal employee, I am required to reveal my investments each and every year.
The first two pages of the 1040

Well….who is McNutcase’s secret partner in crime?
Thanks TW and Raven.
Never, CindyLou? Never? Well, someone is going to make hay with this for sure. Even Teresa Heinz Kerry, who was painted as this horrific elitist, issued the first two pages of her 1040.
McKeating’s use of his wife’s jet has been a flagrant and extreme violation campaign laws. Dude’s practically committing felonies out in the open and BigMedia just says, “Got any more of that fine bar-b-que, Mister?”
The NBC/Richard Engels interview with W was on again this morning. He really challenges W on Iran, Iraq, the war on terror. No fooling around. Engels has covered the Iraq story the whole time; I would not quibble with his view that things are not going well…of course,W would. A very good exchange.
Actually the photo above is an AP image first appearing on KATU.com, a Portland TV station yesterday. It first appeared at 1:42 PDT.
An updated article is here.
Uhh….Teresa Heinz Kerry?
The Obama’s, both of them together, have released all their forms for the last several years. They’re the ones running against McKeating, right?
This being the government, I assume there is a nice big standard form you have to complete — is there a link to it, or to the official policy posted on a nice government website?
Someone really should point this out to Cindy, before John goes through the whole hassle of the campaign.
The Teresa Heinz Kerry thing is the rag that the McCain’s are waving around for their claim of ’sanctuary’. CindyLou is even using the same reason - that she is protecting their children, since so much information about their trust funds is in her tax return. Heinz Kerry used the same reasoning in terms of protecting the personal financial info of her children from her marriage to her first husband.
OGE Form 450
and here’s the form itself:

in PDF. You can find the continuation pages for the form listed at the first link.
Ah, thanks.
Let me get this straight. The Rethug Party is going to raise millions of dollars so McBu’ush can promote, incoherently, a fantasy message to the 27% of the country’s population who believe Jesus would bomb Irak and that the Easter Bunny and tooth fairy are real. And the Rethugs say they are the party of fiscal responsibility? Riiiiight.
you know, this might be one of obaman’s most powerful tools
to say;
“mccain has had big business and corporations bail out his debt to the tune of millions of dollars, they are not going to invest in a politician unless they were certain that politician would do their bidding
the obaman campaign has been financed by the people and this presidency will give you back the government our founders insisted we have, a government for the PEOPLE, a government by the PEOPLE
not a governemt for corporations, nor a government for corporations”
wow, pretty powerful stuff here
Good morning, everyone. Back from my Appalachia tour. Is the world still here?
How refreshing.
Good Morning Scarecrow and Firedogs,
good to have you back ‘Crow. found this while googling around for Oregon party affiliation numbers:
holy crap! can you say extending the brand ?!?!? knew ya could :D
Many thanks!
You got it.
twolf1 at 11 — amazing picture. Can we use that?
but this is not all a bed of roses
to be sure, there is really no chance corporations are going to invest in a campaign that they know is doomed and believe me, they know any republican running in an honest election will not win, bush has destroyed the republican brand
therefore to me, if they do indeed give oodles of money to the McCain campaign then they have been reassured their investment will likely give them a return
that is a little scary
in this country, Obama has mobilized more voters then in the history of this country
the democrats are more energized then in the history of this country
the republicans are reviled more then in the history of this country
now let’s look at those facts and couple them with the fact that even if we make believe the prior elections were not stolen, the races were monumental in how close
this election cannot possibly be close, it can’t, we have more voters and more hope then past elections, we are more energized, the republicans enjoy a vile hatred in this country
McCain cannot be close and the fact that he is polling close means to me they are even gaming the polls in preparation for the election
what have we done to get evoting banned?
what have we done to insure democratic precincts will be properly staffed with enough equipment?
what have we done to prevent the caging we know as a fact will occur?
the mid term elections all these things went on but they thought the elections were close and they didn’t put in a big enough fix, yet the more exposed they are the more brazen they become
this time they will not take a chance, they will flip machines far more then they believe to need to be flipped, they don’t care if we know they stole yet another election, they don’t care
or perhaps they are counting on “serendipity”, a catastrophe where the president declares martial law, suspends elections, appoints himself or Cheney or McCain to run this country till the new “threat” is “defeated”
Here’s the Flickr page.
let’s look at that picutre tee wolf one and compare it to pictures of mccains appearance…to use the word “anemic” for mccains audience would be kind
yet somehow mccain is polling even or better then obama…somehow
I cannot believe these polls are honest, I believe the game has begun
were you in my backyard again and didn’t tell me?
Morning all. Short drive through.
OK so Darth picks up the phone to his buddies on K street and tells them to pony up. They say, “we know which way the wind is blowing” and Darth says “actually not, trust me on this” and they pony up. Anyone watching? Anyone going to put 2 & 2 together?
Just thinking. . . .
I’m sure a “side by side” would be very instructive.
ADM has cut off NewsHour at the knees:
Baltimore, Charleston (W.Va) and Richmond. Nice people.
Related: HBO had a special on coal mining - coal companies running ads on how great the environment was after clearing whole mountains, while we focus on all the folks with illnesses from contaminated ground water. Half the US electricity generated from burning coal.
Help a kid: buy energy-saving light bulbs.
McSame event…
tee hee
LOL. Who is that guy?
they shred the tops of mountains where nobody in the town below even feels what is being done to them and they contaminate the water tables for thousands of acres with toxic waste
But it’s ok to do that when it’s poor people, you know.
guess ADM doesn’t need to pay the NewsHour protection money anymore.
They sponsored the NewsHour all through this little inconvenience, and I will note that the NewsHour didn’t much notice the case at the time.
the problem is that it’s a love hate relationship, those that work coal in union mines get a good salary, yet of course it’s nothing compared to their health liability but they think the trade is worth it, or they are forced to believe it because there is nothing else for them or their town
and the edge cuts both ways, where would we be without coal, look at where we are right now relying on the middle east to do just about everything
we have a tough road ahead with tough choices, the kinds of choices that really can’t be made
what do we do, abandon coal?
well, the solution is alternative renewable, the solution is wind, tide, solar and hemp
IT CANT GET WORSE THAN THIS…oh my
http://www.chron.com/disp/stor.....88103.html
That’s Lennie, from Of Mice and Men, wanting to hear the “2013 speech” again. “Tell me about them rabbits, John.”
its a shame he cant capture the white working class/
scroll down
http://www.dailykos.com/story/.....661/518011
LOL. Yeah, I fear Lennie may be emblematic of a too-large segment of the US electorate. Hope I’m wrong.
More from the WaPo on democratic donors at work:
There’s more at the link. It’s a very interesting dance going on behind the scenes. It’s not all sweetness and light, but folks seem to recognize that McCain is the target that really matters.
Unfortunately, it can. And very well might. The saddest part is that Bush, Cheney, McBu’ush Inc couldn’t care less.
Do something nice for the world today.
Give a Republican an earful.
In front of his/her friends.
Actually, he hasn’t yet captured the white working class.
I don’t know….is that a helpful analysis? Can’t we frame it that our interests are more similar, etc.
Republics are not bothered. They simply focus on the heart warming antics of Princess Jenna, Princess Barbara, Prince Pierce, and the rest of the Royal Bush Family. No war involved.
When you live in an area where it seems that the only things your community has to ’sell’ are labor and natural resources(in the Northwest, it used to be trees and labor), then that is what you feel you have got. The difference between the Northwest and Appalachia is that the education system and the economy changed in the Northwest.
Are you white working class?
Has he captured you?
If the answer is yes
Talk to your white coworkers.
No abstraction required.
are you sure that the issue is class? and not people who’ve lived in or near an urban/metropolitan area vs. those who have not? the very little bit i’ve looked at the exit poll data makes me suspect that might be the real divide, but i haven’t looked at enough to really have drawn any conclusions.
looks like he has plenty to me…just sayin
Why is it Obama just reminds me so much of my 7th grade science teacher?
i don’t think that’s frame, i think that’s spin.
i know,i cried today for that beautiful young couple, only 24,and 25…those creatins are evil and cynical
Are you sure it isn’t LIEberman?
Morning Scarecrow and pups. I had email from a friend in Portland who went to the rally. He said it took over two hours for the patient “line” of people trying to get into the park to get there. He said it was a very friendly and diverse crowd and he was sure it was larger than the largest of the antiwar protests in Portland in 2003. He said that not only was the entire park full, but the surrounding streets were blocked off and full as well.
tell us about that,
he doesn’t remind me at all of Mrs. Stern
(she would be my 7th grade science teacher)
You know, I wouldn’t be so sure about that. My hairdresser is from over the border in northern PA(an area that is called Pennsyltucky for a reason) - she’s a card-carrying Baptist, hunter and fisherman - and she thinks McCain is old and dangerous and is supporting Obama.
and their INSIPID CORPORATE media lackeys, like Ms.Greenspin and co…makes ya wanna puke
I think it’s the ears, frankly - but it’s also that very fresh “I’ve got some news for you and you are going to love THIS” look. My 7th grade science teacher was out of the “Mr. Wizard” school of teaching science - I love me some ‘demos’.
HuffPo has another great view of the Portland rally on its front page at the mo.
Such irony, the dependency that’s emerging between McCain and Herr Bu$hler. The troglodyte who gratuitously rubbished McCain in 2000, the frat boy who transformed an entire political party into a toxic waste EPA superfund site, the simian who gave simians a bad name, is to be McCain’s salvation? Their inseparability is their mutual doom. But they’ll be a match made in heaven in the few microseconds the marriage lasts.
yes i blame you TOM BROKAW,PUMKINHEAD,TWEETS,for sending us to war in Iraq…without you guys cheerleading…IT COULDNT be done …period
Will the McCain campaign be able to “coordinate” with the various entities receiving this money? I’m assuming not, or contribution limits would have no force and all campaigns would operate that way.
If not, then with the majority of contributions going to entities that aren’t the actual campaign, I’m just counting the days until McCain’s excuses for gutter campaigning switch to “Of course I don’t agree with it, but I’m not allowed to tell them not to do it…”
Here’s another photo of a McSame rally.
see 54
hahahahahahahaha
sheep are smarter than that, they like liberal amts of feed
Yep. With Rev Hagee’s flock in the lead.
he sold his soul, like FAUST,many years ago,
I think Obama is going to be so on top of this. There is a large cadre who will not let the “swift boat” noise fly..I’m hoping. (I should not use that phrase; it implies too much power & dignity. I’ll try to find a new description for those immoral liars.)
I’ve been looking through Google images trying to find an actual photo of a McCain rally. It ain’t easy. All the shots I’ve seen so far are cropped very tightly, obviously trying to hide the fact there are very few people in attendance. Interesting.
That one needs a warning!
Real example of McCain rally tightly cropped.
Hope your komputa is OK.
perris and RevDeb -
I do not doubt that the game is indeed afoot. I am not even shaken knowing each Certificate of Vote in the electoral college process is mailed to the Office of Vice President - we were all chuckling yesterday about how they have clung to the 04 playbook to date
anyone thinking the Obama Campaign will go all Gore/Kerry/bygones has not been paying attention. sometime back, read an article about the campaign containing a reference to a ‘contingency crew’ - sole purpose to contest anything that subornes the will of the electorate - they are not going to listen to anyone’s blathering about “sore loser”, “unseemingly”, “for the good of the country ” , “he’s still young enough to try again in ‘12″. these are some last man standing types from Chicago streets -
nagonnahappen - bring it
Now there is the good news. Thanks. One of us has to go to work. Keep up the fight.
From teh Google. Check out the banner in the back. This one is a winner. Stuffed head on the wall, stuffed fish, funny banner and McSame looking to the heavens for support.
and that’s tough to do in heels :D
There are pictures of McCain events all over the net.
Hard to believe that’s not photo-shopped (Bull for Sale). What a hoot. Good catch.
OMG. That first one is a pic of McCain removing lobbyist advisers from his campaign?
707
And re your 86: Get some.
lmao!
Just opened the morning paper to a 5″X7.5″ AP photo showing much less landscape, making the crowd look all that more impressive than the one above. My friend the hobbit might describe it as “tightly cropped”. *g*
The short AP article alongside is calling total of 80,000 in attendance.
Wow! Just Wow!
I Googled “McCain rally” and this popped up. Looks about right to me…
I go away for a week, and you’re all into sheep.
Naaah. Lightly cropped.
Careful, now.
we are, after all “rabid venomous lambs”
Change Ewe Can Believe In !
“G”
For those, like me, on whom the reference might be lost.
Looks like Obama is promising to use antitrust laws to go after media consolidation and other mergers. I think he just made McCain’s fund raising take a leap.
Obama eyes media with promise of antitrust push
Hmmm, show text isn’t working.
Obama more of a Teddy than the Rethugs.
Saw somewhere yesterday a line that politicians need to be more afraid of their voters than their donors…. seems apt to this exactly.
GOTV, GOTV
No, a cynical person would know the government has already been sold.
Except, of course, if you are Ram Emanuel, right?
After living in Portland for 19 years….. the size of that rally is huge…. been there for several events but those pictures…. wow…..
The amazing one is the numbers of the rally in Roseburg is a BIG indicator… Roseburg is a red area…. Roseburg Rally….. there is a pic of the crowd….. THAT is huge….
sometimes the page doesn’t load entirely, it times out
if you look at the bottom you might see “completed iwth errors” or something
try a hard refresh and then don’t try any of the features until the thingy says “done”
Hmmmm. Shortly after being endorsed by John Edwards. I like the sound of this.
Obama responds to GOP attacks on his wife:
thus my favorite theme;
“we will NOT be “raising taxes on the wealthy”, we will be RECLAIMING assets that were missapropriated, we will take those assets from where they now reside and put them back whence they came.
this will not be a tax on the wealthy it will be reaquiring the assets that were taken from our infrastructure, our clean water, our envirenment, the middle class and our children”
their heads will blow up
excellent is thy framing, perris
In the Hey! At Least They’re Consistent Dept - the rib cultists fail again and again to note the irony -
as announced by Rick Davis
look at that little weasel Jisicoff’s misleading framing
McCain versus Lobbyists, whatever Mike
eggsellent!
Looseheadprop has a brand new post up about how “The FBI Needs Outside Supervision of National Security Letters”.
We The People are very powerful when they have good representation and get involved. Barack Obama is the first candidate that brought the people back into the process. The other politicians prefer the people tend to their own business and leave governing to the political elite who own 95% of the wealth. Just sayin:
1. I whole heartedly agree it is time the Dems started using all their tools in the political toolbox.
2. Impeachment is top tools on the list to frame the rethugs as the criminals they are through the discovery process and Inherent Contempt as above the law. Nancy, John, Henry are you listening?
The Willamette Week did a review of all the candidates prior to this weeks primary and Obama was questioned…. they threw a weird question out to all the candidates……
Q: “If you were going to get a Tatoo what would it be?” ….
Obama A: “I wouldn’t but if I did…. it would be of Michelle”…
Ahhhh
old fashioned I suppose, but gallant is good.
thank you Scarecrow, glad you came back,
getting lost in the Appalachians sounds like heaven to me, not sure I’d return.
a stake really must be put through their heart, I would hope before cheney’s heart fails through natural causes, I would really like them to know they were rebuked in their lifetime
it’s nice to see the fruits of their depravity in the failed republican party but they still have the treasure they have stolen, they have changed the way our government does business, they have overthrown our consititution, they took office in a silent bloody coup
only a test
Hello, David
I guess that 27% is pretty rich huh?
Hi Scarecrow.
What a terrific pic & post.
Hey! I wanna refund. CNN said there were only 50,000. And the idiot anchor kept SAYING they were covering the Obama Portland event, but then talking over Obama. Boooooooooo! to CNN!?! Besides, it didn’t work, the dummies.
It’s time to put out our sign. Been holding it back out of respect for “the system”. But even Hill. now appears to have accepted the inevitable.
