Tonight the appalling plight of the approximately 100,000 Iraqis who assisted the US government in Iraq is highlighted on 60 Minutes. We have given only 5,000 refuge here, while a country like Sweden has taken in 40,000. What is wrong with us? Have we no decency?

It’s not just those that helped us, but those innocents who have nowhere to go……….!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you Elliott.
+AM
no.
Besides the immorality of our neglect, we should consider the future implications.
In the best case, only halfwits and syncopates will ever help us in the future,
In the worst case, we have sown the seeds of 95000 9-11 plotters.
epu’ed – news from worcester. if they can do it to me, they can do it to you.
looks like i may be ditching my charter service. from worcester indymedia:
damn. more from the nyt, wapo, cnet and our local wccatv.
this is a disaster.
my bold.
BUENOS MORNING FIREDOGS!
and thank you for the talking heads report ELLIOT!
my fav on the list;
yum, TASTEY
Morning
This just infuriates me. And the American people as a whole could care less. I hope this report on 60 Minutes makes big waves. *crossing fingers*
and mack, boy are you right about the 95,000 new plotters, I’d be more than bitter if it happened to me and my family. Trusted? we can’t be anymore.
Good morning, pups. We’re spared the drivelers this morning because MoDo is off, and we have Kristof, Friedman and Rich. Mr. Kristof’s column is titled “Fed Up With Peace,” and he says the recent uprising by Tibetans not only underscores the utter failure of Beijing’s policies in Tibet, but it also reflects the failure of the Dalai Lama and America. Mr. Friedman writes about “Obama and the Jews” and says the notion that a President Barack Obama would have a desire or ability to walk away from America’s bipartisan consensus on Arab-Israeli peace is ludicrous. Frank Rich says “McCain Can Run, but Bush Won’t Hide,” and that for all the Republican self-flagellation, it’s still not clear that the party understands the dimensions of its latest defeat and its full implications for John McCain in November.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got eggs Benedict this morning. And for the folks who are either vegetarians or don’t care for ham I’ve also got eggs Florentine. They finally had flats of portulacas yesterday, so now I’m really forced to address weed central, which used to be the front flower bed… Have a great day.
man, biden is really gonna embarrass the president from ever opening his mouth again
he was great before the research was done to show how moronic the preisdent’s statements were, I can’t wait to see this
I’ll be working I hope someone can tape it and post it up to the youtube
you know, the internets are a series of tubes, and contrary to popular belief, this is the real reason those videos are known as youtubes
I bet knowbody knew that before but it’s true, I swear
It’s not like this is a new pattern of behavior. Ask the Hmong who worked for the CIA in the “secret war” in Laos.
well, no more c-span for me. i’m cancelling my charter service tomorrow (monday).
Elliott @ 7– I hope that this infuriates lots of folks, but there have been hearings on this and it was never even a blip on the radar…
And never has it been recognized here that Jordan, Syria, Iran, and Pakistan have been taking in the refugees from our “actions” for a long while and while Jordan and Pakistan receive $$$ from us Syria and Iran do not.
Jordan has taken in the Palestinians for years and Pakistan is now kicking out the Afghans.
Go figure.
And Selise @ 5– a disaster indeed. ;(
yeah, on the one hand it hardly seems important compared to what the iraqis are going through. but on the other, the toobz are one of our tools that we use to investigate, communicate and organize to try to change our foreign policy.
oo perris, Biden should be tasty today, hope he’s as riled up as he was the other day.
I’d almost pass on Marion’s eggs florentine for that dish.
and seriously – they’re just testing this with us. if it’s not stopped, it’s going to be everywhere.
I am hoping someone, either journalist or democrat, figures out they want to ask mccain the following question;
“will you use the “team b” project to get the answers you are looking for in national security?”
man, that is SUCH a good question, it is a shanghai, it is getting mccain to do one of the following;
1) throw cheney under the bus and call “team b” an inept organization
or
2) get him to say it’s a fine alternative and then we PUNSIH him with the facts that team b has ALWAYS been wrong, promoting war IN THE FACE of documented evidence against those actions
a very good question for mkkkain
yep.
they really do want a somnambulant and monitored public.
recently, i noticed something similar here at fdl… where there were ads that we specific to my local area. freaked me out. it only lasted for a few days (did anyone else notice this?).
Good morning Elliot and everyone.
As far as I can tell, Elliot, the United States under George Bush’s leadership likes killing those who have brown skin rather than saving them. Hell, the same mindset was there after Katrina hit.
Is it an abomination? Yes! Yep it is!
and they’ll ALL be doing it if we don’t guarantee net neutrality. It’s an alarming trend.
Selise – I left you a message downstairs.
your ip is recorded, your ip gives the general location
this is nothing selise, don’t worry about it anymore then you worry about using the tubz at all
Brought to you by the Coalition for Simple Answers to Simple Questions. :-(
Hell’s bells and codfish! That’s an indymedia outfit? Here I was patting myself on the back for supporting the one to which I subscribe (even tho’ they only offer dial-up) and now you’ve got me scared spitless. What are you gonna replace it with?
They want to target folks with “interest specific” ads? Respond with something like Adblock, a Firefox add-on. It works a treat. (They’ll probably respond by trying to make ad blockers illegal…)
you know this for a fact?
because my ip address has me listed in another town – and the ads were for my actual physical location.
thanks, left you a question in return.
indymedia is REPORTING it, not doing it. indymedia is just a local collective (of great people) – they are everywhere. remember the 1999 seattle protests that shut down the wto? it grew out of that movement. indymedia is another great alternative media source that the blogs mostly ignore. :(
Peggy Noonan, Matt Bai, Donna Brazile, and George Will on ABC. Could anything be more vacuous?
George himself?
Lieberputz?
you can block the ads – but who cares if you can’t block the monitoring? and this isn’t just monitoring your browsing history – this is the “deep-packet inspection” that reads the content of every webpage you visit, every email you send, everything!
I meant George S. himself.
Here’s a preview video from Scott Pelley on Kirk Johnson’s List of Iraqi’s he is trying to save.
I doubt it.
Sooner or later people will realize that if this is going on then no e-mail communication is secure, and that every business communication containing proprietary information or, as an example of something going on in my office, communication with a patent attorney regarding a new medical device, is open to inspection. You’d think the legal community would be shitting bricks about this…
Come to think of it, as I look through the babblers listed above, there seems to be a whole lot of vacuousness going on…
(bring on Keith, Maddow, Hamsher…..etc.)
That’ll teach me to read more carefully. *g* My “local” service provider posts headlines from IM frequently and I sometimes pass a linky along to the Lake when it seems appropriate. More often, they deal with local/state politics but still, as you say, another good info source for close to home.
Hugh @ 28 -
Looks like another of those Coalition for SA to SQ’s.
yeah – i’m hoping there will be a firestorm of outrage. the letters informing us of the changes to our TOS have just gone out.
The media resemble the Republican Party in so many ways. Neither seems capable of having a new idea. It’s just the same schlock delivered to us over and over.
I use NoScript and that blocks pop-ups but gives me the chance to allow them, depending on the site.
In gmail, I must say I sometimes get unnerving ad links, depending on the CONTENT of the email. Once a friend wrote and mentioned a few flowers and I think the word “sweet,” and all the google ads were romantic. It was funny except I realized google was scanning what was IN my emails, not just what was in the subject line.
I’m just glad my ex doesn’t work for the NSA, or any of these info- vacuumers.
*shivers*
oops forgot to add NoScript is used with firefox
astute as usual, Hugh.
It’s sort of a replay of the Montagniards who helped us in Viet Nam, on a larger scale. Obviously, any special law or process to accommodate Iraqi refugees who had helped the U.S. would be an admission that Iraq was not going to be a safe place any time in the forceable future, much less the sort of peaceful, prosperous democracy advertised.
On trouble is, the next administration will take the blame for all that happens, including the fate of those who helped the United States.
I know the ip gives the general location at least, as far as your specific town, no I don’t know that, it might have been coincidence, it might be a more sophisticated ip thingy
for instance, I get advertisements for towns within about a 50 mile radius
sometimes it gets the town right, most times it’s just close
Good Morning Elliot and Firedogs,
hey Corp Media – it’s about time you finally got around to the
DemsRepublicans in Disarray theme, let’s see now, you ignore the fact that McNominee’s numbers have not risen since clinching, you are forced again and again to use terms like “unprecedented” and “historical” to desribe the numbers of registering and voting Dems – but you wait until the Republics get their asses handed to them in Klan kountry before you dullards pick up the thread ?!? really, heckuva, … oh never mindThe sacrifices of war…
Someone here once reported that while at FDL they were discussing an upcoming meet-up in (say) Phoenix. They left to go to a travel website and a question popped up “need a flight to Phoenix?” They were a bit freaked by the question. Seems we may already be victims of this surveillance.
Hugh, a few days ago you and I both note that we were a little disappointed that McCain’s bizarre “2013″ speech was overrun by events and didn’t receive more press play. I thought about what it remined me of, and would like to see and SNL which treats it like Of Mice and Men, with the press asking, “Tell us about the rabbits, John.”
check this out
http://whatismyipaddress.com/s…../lookup-ip
well, for the few days it was active, i got only ads for my physical location and none for the location my ip address gives (which is closer to boston than to my home).
yup – it lists the WRONG location.
Which is why I included links for all those shows, so we can offer constructive criticism, kindly, and suggest those voices worth hearing — like Jane, Christy, Siun, a masked Scarecrow -off the top of my head.
I would LOVE to see Siun on a roundtable talking Kirk Johnson’s List.
I urge you all to write the shows and sound off!
So true. Poor Georgie…he’s sacrificing so much!
then that might be your provider selling more precise info
did you happen to catch this gem? Haven’t found a youTube of it yet, but I’m sure it’ll show up.
McCain makes age jokes on ‘Saturday Night Live’
I did mean to include thanks for those links!
exactly!
sorry to go all OT… i’m just a bit freaked and sad to have to give up my cheap access to c-span. i guess it really was too good to be true.
now, what exactly are the inane talking heads up to? i’m afraid i don’t have what it takes to watch for myself.
selise! you aren’t OT Sunday mornings. This is always an open forum.
Good Morning everyone….. the sun is just peeking up over here….
The invisibles…… Ian’s post yesterday nails it….. those that do the work that make others lives so much easier are not seen or acknowledged….. it would be normal that BushCo would NOT help those that are no seen.
There have always been something … left …or happened during war…. Korea…. the guys came back with PSDT and no help and left a lot of mixed race children who were shunned by that society…….. Vietnam was a repeat… My two youngest children were adopted from one of those agencies who grew out of the need to place those children.
In stead of mixed race children….. this time we are leaving behind something worse….. that the USA uses Iraqi citizens and when push comes to shove we do not stand up for them…….
let me ask though
when it knew your location more precisely, were you hardwired to the modem at home?
right now I am at a panera and the ip says I’m in a differant state, when I’m home the ip thingy is pretty close
No,I hadn’t seen it. Unfortunately, he does those little skits and interviews better than most. He apparently does have a sense of humor. His speeches and debate performances, thought, have been strange to me. In 2000, he appeared a fairly adept campaigner. Now, his delivery is a strange sort of soft-voiced story telling, which I likened earlier to Peter Faulk in Princess Bride, and his expressions and hand movements are badly out of sinc (Nixon used to do that). Hopefully, our candidate can be coached by long time acquaintances on how to get him out of kilter and maybe cause him to blow his lid.
Sorry, Elliott. My 61 was a response to your 55.
wrt Sweden, sadly:
http://www.presstv.ir/detail.a…..=351020606
Villanova held a conference in April on the subject of the Iraqi refugees
4/4/2008: WASHINGTON, DC: 3 hr. 28 min.: CSPAN3 video link
yes. i’m at home. that’s ALL i’m referring to. my home ip address though lists my location as boston – which it is not. but i didn’t get any ads for boston. just for my actual location.
I think once McCain has to campaign directly against the Democratic nominee, he will be easy to goad into outbursts. Right now he’s tanned and rested and can pick and choose his venues.
This was a humdinger of a hearing too.
http://judiciary.senate.gov/hearing.cfm?id=2470
blergh.
It really will not be difficult to throw McBush off kilter….. I don’t think he can handle having the ear bud process that Bush does to keep him on message….. McBush has trouble with the teleprompter and in a debate….. he will either say something stupid and/or blow….. it will happen…. it is just a matter of time…..
The idea that CindyLou might be first lady just sends shivers up my spine….
Going for more coffee…… anyone need a warm up?
Yes. I’m encouraged any time the MSN switches directly from an Obama or Clinton event to a McCain event. The contrast is startling. I’ve been in hospital waiting rooms which are more enthusiastic than the McCain events.
I did, however, notice one girl chewing gum behind Obama in one of his speeches at a production plant. We need to apply Bush access rules and make sure she never gets behind Obama at another event.
Sweden shouldn’t have to shoulder the burden we created.
Uh-oh, time for me to brave Fox News Sunday! Not sure I can stomach Karl Rove, tho.
I think the progressives are underestimating how effective those outbursts might be
they might get mccain votes rather then lose votes, right now he seems like a fragile, timid, aging man not at full capacity
if he has an anger fit that opinion might be reversed
I have seen him very effective when angry so don’t count on that being a bad thing
sounds to me like you might want to contact your provider then
Morning, Selise..as usual, I’m late to the table. I have the feeling that TW Roadrunner, etc. are already doing this…at least your service is telling you. But, I think we can all make the bald assumption that our internet visits and emails are being monitored already. At least, I do.
nobody should– not Sweden, Jordan, Iran, Syria– nobody!
(and you are brave, btw)
Crosstimbers @ 69– well at least she can chew gum and think at the same time!
I almost never watch the Sunday Morning Gasbags, but boy, oh boy, Biden is doing a great job right now.
btw – noticed there is a dearth of the usual McCrazy surrogates in the line ups – (although Timmeh will do his fluffing utmost with Webb and GI Bill)
could it be McCampaign is getting a little nervous now that some of his lemming base are beginning to talk about the lobbyists on the bus ?
‘nother one bit it yesterday – link Tom Loeffler, one of 3 lobbyists targeted by Cliff and firethelobbyists dot com
but do note Jizzicoff’s ridiculous framing “McCain versus The Lobbyists instead of the more fact based McCain and the Busload O’ Lobbyists
live blog por favor?
Actually, the glazed eyes were the main problem. The gum was only a little excessive when she blew a bubble.
whew boy!
missed that, thankfully.
sheesh.
yes, as i wrote above, i’m canceling my charter service tomorrow.
but it looks like the problem is not just my provider.
turns out, i think, using a tool that twolf1 recommended downstairs (i’ve just installed the demo version) – i can’t even read or write fld comments without letting this site have access to my home computer. can a mod tell me if that is right? and if so, wtf?
I disagree, Perris, a real outburst can be quite frightening. There’s a difference between getting angry and going ballistic, and McCain goes crazy ballistic.
oh goodie
*rubbing hands together in glee*
The idea that CindyLou might be first lady just sends shivers up my spine….
Strikes me the same way, too…….haven’t spent much time thinking about it other than what *we* know about her via the blogs; is there something appearance-wise that’s a tad creepy? Yeah, yeah, yeah – shouldn’t judge by looks! Nobody knows that better than I (and that’s a story for another day) but there’s always the human nature reaction that you simply can’t factor out.
Color and play by play, please, Marion…I don’t get tv here.
Perris….. until you have seen one of McBush’s outbursts then you cannot say…. he looks like the grandpa on the Simpon’s yelling at clouds….. spittle spewing forth and then the profanity….. Ask us in AZ….. he will look REALLY scary…. especially to the old folks…… as they will see in themselves what they never want to be…… the crazy old uncle yelling at nothing…
Did Hitler give refuge to the Polish survivors?
Sorry… He went down chapter and verse of how W has (paraphrasing here) “negotiated with terrorists,” including the fact that Biden was called by W and asked to get on Air Force Two and go meet with Khadaffi. He used the word “sophistry,” which of course most Republicans will have to consult a dictionary to understand. Georgie Snuffleupagus tried to call him a hypocrite because at one point in one of the hundreds of Democratic debates Biden had called Obama “unready,” and Biden shot him down. I’ll bet the farm that film of this will be up on Crooks and Liars soon. It was lovely.
When you think that they cannot disregard the customs of the Iraqi’s or Islam then this comes out….. OMG…
“F*** yeah”: Worse Than Abu Ghraib
There was one occasion, when he had set up Romney and made points against him, when he actually looked petty and mean spirited. It had some of the effect of George Allen’s maccaca performance.
Anyway, I’m going to say something which will sound like prejudice against the elderly, but which is not. There is a reason why polls indicate that McCain’s age is more of concern to older people than to younger people. I’m 65 and I do think age is a factor with McCain. That is because I know that I’m just not as sharp and capable as I was even five years ago. It differs with each individual, but your memory and physical aptitudes start to decline at some point. McCain does not appear to me to be the able person he was in 2000. I don’t think Democrats can specifically harp on age, without losing support and appearing mean, but I think it will be evident as he competes with either of the two Democrats.
I wonder if those little f*ckers ever gave any consideration to how they would feel if a crowd of the people they love to call “islamofascists” used the Bible for target practice… Oh, that means they’d have to display some degree of compassion… Never mind…
cool
I can’t wait to see one of these, perhaps there is a youtube?
and let’s see now, and what is the average IQ of the recruits? And what sort of cross cultural training have they received?
Sending comments anywhere is sending information. That software monitors all outgoing traffic of any kind – ie sending comments. It’s not gaining access to your computer, you are sending comments to FDL. You can check the ‘allow forever’ box or turn the software off.
oh
I wanted to emphasize this:
loved how they made Major General kiss the Q’uaran in his appeasement ceremony :D
I agree with you. I’m 62 and Mr. Marion in Savannah is crowding 70. And neither one of us has a medical history like his… Age is a valid consideration in this race. He’s older than St. Ronnie, fer gawd’s sake, and St. Ronnie sat behind Moses in second grade…
and in a way, Ted Kennedy’s “episode” this week emphasizes this.
what is this software tool?
I would like to have a lookey c
twolf1 – it’s not just sending comments, it’s reading comments. i can’t read comments here without providing access to my computer. and it doesn’t look like it’s the fdl site – it looks like it’s the ads.
G’Morning Marion (that should be the title of a song)
But, anyway. Funny you should draw the comparison between the Reagans and the McCains, ’cause upthread when you guys were shuddering at the thought of Ms. Cindy in the WH, I was imagining her doing that “fawning” thing at every event and Redecorating the Entire place. All new silver and everything. You know, nothing like a really expensive war to surge the urge to SHOP!
look here
In no way do I take your comment as ageism…. there is a difference between being “on the ball” to be a Senator and the stress of being the leader of the free world [who made up that crap anyway]….. All anyone needs to do is get the before and after picks for every Prez and see how the office ages them…. except for St Ronny who just used more hair dye and was already loosing it by then…..
After 8 years of BushCo this country NEEDS someone who can be in top form to help us out of this mess.
and what is never spoken is the fact that reagan was not the president toward the end of is career, bush was
I actually believe reagan when he said that “though I am responsible I did not know what we were doing when olie north committed crimes against this country”
well, I took poetic license but I happen to believe he really didn’t know what was going on
any 1 see this?
213 things a soldier can’t do
Kristol’s all smirky this morning, Brit appeasing McCain.
This article in the NYT by Sheryl Gay Stolberg
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05…..xy.html?hp
What irritates me about such articles is that Stolberg tries to strike a “neutral” tone by regurgitating White House talking points rather than pointing out what a pathetic waste of time and money Bush’s whole Middle East trip has been, and that what Mideast policy he has had has failed and for the rest he didn’t and still doesn’t have any.
any show with someone who is so consistantly wrong should be called
“morons in the morning”
26. Never tell a German soldier that “We kicked your ass in World War 2!”
Callers into C-SPAN this morning are dumb as usual. *rolling eyes*
That’s some of the funniest stuff I’ve seen in a month of Sundays!
Bah hahahaha, Marion! “Sat behind Moses in 2nd grade”….hysterical! ;-)
Are those the one who call in on the Democratic line and then call it the “Democrat Party”?
didn’t hear any this morning.
Sometimes tho I am amazed at how many callers on the Dem line seem to be leftwingblog savvy, no doubt fdl readers, getting in good points and refuting bad ones.
Yep! Those are the ones! They sound awfully familiar. *tapping chin & thinking* LOL
Elliott, the only smart ones calling in today are from the Left and I’m not talking about the neocons calling up pretending to be Lefties either! ;-)
Given what was written above about soldiers desecrating a Qu’ran, the following seems more than a little ironic:
210. Must not make T-shirts up depicting a pig with the writing “Eat Pork or Die” in Arabic to bring as civilian attire when preparing to deploy to a primarily Muslim country
Just a couple of years behind you and agree completely based on my own decreasing capabilities. Plus, apparently quite a few of us were around when ronny was “goin’ downhill”…..while president. Looking back on that now, it literally scares the spit outta me with such questions as: “Who the hell was runnin’ the country?!?!” And for how many years?!?!
Charlie Crist will doubtless announce that he’s moving to California to marry David Dreier.
Proposed Ad slogans for McBush….. funny…
Ad-versity
“what’s the worst that could happen!”
“John McCain, he’s the cheesiest.” lol
I’d like to see that.
Some of my favorites are:
23. Must never ask anyone who outranks me if they’ve been smoking crack.
102. Rodents are not entitled to burial with full military honors, even if they are “casualties of war”.
135. An order to put polish on my boots means the whole boot.
On my flight back from NYC they showed SeaBiscuit…. one of my favorite movies… is based during the great depression….. what I see is history repeating itself……
IF McBush wins….. or gets installed as Prez….. then I see that path unfolding……. It will be a Hoover administration on steroids…… also saw a FDR special on PBS while in NYC…. between the two it really makes me very sure that this country might not survive if a Democrat is not elected
It occurred to me this morning, Hugh, that Americans are smoking crack after watching C-SPAN and this is why some still believe George Bush didn’t lie us into war….they continue to say it was the Congress that did! Oh yes, the “evidence” provided wasn’t a forgery either.
Russert right out of the box drills to get that soundbite of Jim Webb as possible candidate for VP
I was looking for Tom Davis’ statement on the plight of the GOP and voila!
it is right here, up now, emptywheel’s Virginia and Tom Davis’ Plan to Save the GOP Brand
Who made Bob Shrum THE Democratic strategist? a guy whose win rate is …. what is it 0-12?
well Hello David . . . saw your comment about the soiree the other evening, you, Perlstein and Digby – sooo envious
and where in the hell were you a few months back when I couldn’t get any comment love on the whole HRC as Eve Harrington/Addingpenn DeWitt meme ?!?! *g*
good to see you at the Lake
yeah, his picture should be over at the FAIL! site.
Russert just won’t step out of his comfort zone.
Not only do we have no decency, we have no shame!
Morning all :) Happy Sunday!!!!
Science is great!! :)
‘Fungi may have an important role to play in the fate of potentially dangerous depleted uranium left in the environment after recent war campaigns, according to a new report in the May 6th issue of Current Biology, a publication of Cell Press.
The researchers found evidence that fungi can “lock” depleted uranium into a mineral form that may be less likely to find its way into plants, animals, or the water supply.’
http://www.nextenergynews.com/…..6.08a.html
twolf1 – left you a question downstairs.
wow! that would be wonderful.
’shrooms rule!
I guess that means we will soon be hoarding stockpiles of this algae in some kind of “strategic reserve”
it would be good to find a waste problem that’s for certain
oops, I meant “a solution to waste problems”
Actually it is possible to contend that Shrum is a Dem strategist in that he seems to know how to get his candidate(s) a Democratic Party nomination.
He just really s*cks at the General Election component of things.
Oh I got yer tasty bits right here..
The most interesting revelation came out of Stephanclintonopoulis’s mouth, when he acknowledged the amazing fact that right now, Obama is showing a 7 point lead over McCain in their own polls. And that’s without the rest of the Democrats still committed to Hillary -he says they represent about 25% of the party.
Maeaning, that when Hillary leaves the race, and the dust settles, Obama will instantly jump to, at least, an 18 point lead over McCain.
This is going to be a HUGE landslide of a win for the Dems.
YAAAY!
1 down, 275+ Democrats to go…
