twolf1 - the issue with the location specific ads is that my ip address shows my location as boston (but that’s not where i’m physically located) and the ads were for my actual physical location - not my ip location. that was what i thought was weird.

i’ve been able to turn off the ads (very nice) but there is still something that is not obviously fdl that i can’t turn off without being unable to access comments. maybe the comments are hosted on another server that has a funny name and no associated info to show who/what it is?

anyway, i’m stuck with it…. but until someone can tell me for a fact that there is nothing going on besides the communication needed for me to view the page, i’m going to be a little suspicious.

tw3k - thanks for the info but but i don’t have apache - i just use a hosting companies servers.

re: charter….. i don’t even know if there are any good ISPs. but charter deserves the boot as far as i’m concerned. i’ll see what they say when i call tomorrow. sounds like folks here are pretty pissed off. let’s hope there’s some massive push back or this test will be rolled out to the rest of the country.

Sounds like the great migration of spyware from the local harddrive to the ISP.

Good ISPs are getting hard to find :/

20 listenings

is just kinda how sockets work.

Active apache on your machine and enable mod_status. Then you can monitor the apache status of your local machine to get an idea of how apache uses network sockets.

Great way to do your development work with webyep too. You do your work locally then use Transmit to copy the local mirror to the server.

interarchy also has a nice tools to monitor your machines network activity. ethereal too.

The Charter issue is a whole nuther ball of wax. Better to switch to an ISP that does view you as a piece of data.

Location specific ads are no big deal. They use your ip address to get the general location and show you the corresponding ad. No need to be paranoid about that. Things may not show up as FDL domain because, as with many web ads, they are hosted on a separate server. I have never come across anything from FDL that i thought was suspicious.

p.s. i wouldn’t have been so paranoid, if i hadn’t seen the ads that were specific to my home town…. and now getting the news about charter…. makes me wonder what, if anything, is going on that i don’t know about.

if you know for a fact that the only thing going on with fdl is the necessary communications needed to load the page, and nothing else - i’ll take your word for it. is that what you are saying?

but twolf1 - it’s not the fdl domain (as i see with other sites, i’ve already checked that) it’s some weird combination of numbers, lowercase letters an “:”s - and there isn’t any info associated with it (as with other sites - no ip address, no reverse dns name - nothing). if it is the fdl domain, why doesn’t it say so?

p.s. a side feature of this app is that i can selectively turn off adds. very nice - that’s worth the $ all by itself.
