Finifinito, who helps me each week with technical support here at The Spin I’m In, supplied us with this week’s play-list which he swears will get us spring cleaning. Shake your tail feather duster.
Our friends at the non-profit Iraqi Art gallery that I wrote about here need your help. They are doing important work by bringing to the US the work of Iraqi artists, but the gallery survives on much needed donations. Click here to become a sponsor (any donation appreciated), or support an artist directly by buying a work of art here.
Update: You can also call the gallery in Chicago at (312) 952-1329

Aloha, Donita and fini! ;-)
Hey Donita, finifinito!
Howdy Howdy, long time no see Donita.
Spin me baby!
Donita!
Finifinito!
FDL!
Nice to see we’re Back from the Shadows Again!
Aloha, hola, bueno suerte, konichiwa, hey hi howdy!
Just what I needed.
Morcheeba is so calming,
I’ve been cleaning too. Funny, I’ve been listening to a lot of B-52’s. There’s only one copy of Funplex left at my record store.
Question, Donita: My friend and I are trying to harmonize guitars on ‘Wargasm,’ like you and Suzi. We’re watching videos but we still can’t figure this out. When you’re moving that E-form bar chord up the neck on the opening riff, are you strumming just the sixth string, or the fifth and sixth (or maybe the fourth, fifth, and sixth)?
Apparently, somebody neglected to give the NSA handlers their daily rations of donuts…! ;-)
fin! donita! just in time save me from listening to the slip tracks.
apologies for the samples on some of these, but if you sign up for an account at imeem you can hear the whole songs.
But c’mon fini. You couldn’t put Shake A Tail Feather into the playlist this week?
Not even the Ray Charles/Blues Brothers version (probably more easily found than the original)?
Hey everyone!
Oh shit, it wasn’t my turn, was it?
Get your going by Digg this for Donita!
I love the art, thank for the link.
Dugg, how’s your spring cleaning going, nahant? Ready for the family? ;-)
hey, since your the windows voodoo kind, do you have any use xp licenses to sell?
That would be the ones with the Ex-lax filling, right?
whew. having problems with the donation link above, if you click that donation link it takes you to their website where a working link to PayPal is established.
Inside done but outside needs more work but it is too dam hot to work out there in the sun… and even in the shade it still too hot 98.5 and climbing ,you can only do so much before you have to ge t back in … 10 degrees cooler with the fans running! No AC :(
VerbotenOh, Hiya!!!
There is a donation link on the home page too.
Nice to be back up. Sorry for the Refresh That Pauses. [hat tip punaise]
sorry No… but you know I just might get some as clients upgrade their Pcs and get Vista. They often give me the old Pc to get rid of after I clean all their stuff off… If get any I will let you know tw3k.
lol :)
Hello teej,
You might be making too much work for yourself. I haven’t played that song in a long time, but I know that Suzi and I are not harmonizing, we’re playing the exact same rhythm part. I know that the song is tuned with the low E string to D. That might help. One of the most math-rock songs I ever wrote. Good luck with that one!
Sweet, thanks! It’s for a good cause.
An oldie but a goldie….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfVU6aqDY_o
Well I wrote the text and title and Fini did the playlist on his own without knowing what I was going to write.
Hi Donita, hi guys,
good news on my mail box today, but don’t forget to keep a little money for you, eh girl?
Okay if you were going to buy a painting to support an Iraqi artist, which one would it be and why?
http://www.iraqi-art.com/gallery/
Whew…11 month old in the house is terrorizing me. She crawls like no tomorrow and has been attacking me this afternoon.
Just another one of those old soul songs from my youth. I think the original was done by James and Bobby Purify if memory is serving me. Great to dance to back in the day.
I’d go with Attachment…I have a very unsophisticated design sense – I always go for bright happy colors.
Dieaa Al Kuzaiey, Childish Minded
Its a great post modern piece with great lines and stark contrasting colors. I love how vibrant the colors look.
I really like “Waiting” by Mohammed Alqassim. It’s the one that was on the FDL homepage. Can’t explain why really.
http://firedoglake.com/2008/03…..shoulders/
Second painting, “Old Cities”…because it captures something I relate to…because it is an excellent painting…it might be upside down, but it works both ways.
Right..what finifinito said…;)
Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels version is great too.
Is that the one you have, Donita?! ;-) Mmmmmmm?!!
Either War or Phoenix.
War because I like the one area of the melting helicopter.
Phoenix for the sharpness, colors and the idea of the resurrection.
War is really good. I like his style a lot.
nominations:
Saad Abd Ali, New Iraq
Ahmed Nussaif, Orphan Bout
Raouf Al Attar, Untitled
Assad Al Saghir, Avenue **
Jaafar Mohammad, Days In Baghdad 2
Mohammed Al Zobaidi, The White Lane **
Mohammed Hamden, Woman of the South **
Hassan Ibrahim, Untitled
Acrylic on Canvas
27 1/2 X 27 1/2, 2007
It is difficult to single out one for each is unique.
Mass Graves resonates with me due to the hues, sense of reflection and perspective of the lanscape.
Gallery two, Mohammed Msyir.
I must say the first one (sold).. Isn’t that eCHan’s now? Anyway, it was my first favorite.
I’m late, but I’m here now :)
I like Ahmed Nussaif, Marshes
too.
some of the sold ones would be my first choices
Heyyyy!
Hey Fini, what’s up?
I like Woman of the South too. The colors are great.
Donita, I noticed a bit to late esterday, fini stopped by and said you were on NPR promoting your next tour.
Got a schedule posted on the web yet?
I like much of the work by Ahmed Nussaif. It would take some time to decide which piece. I would have to consider where I intended to hang it, it would have an impact on my choice. Is that hopelessly gauche?
Many is the time I’ve wished I had some level of artistic talent in drawing, painting, illustrating and such.
Unfortunately I have an artistic temperment without the corresponding talent.
Yep, on her website at http://donitasparks.com you can grab her handy dandy tour Gydget you could post on a blog or MySpace page.
I really like a lot of these. If you were buying for yourself, you might consider Gathering because that’s what you’ve created here and what this humble commenter associates with the name Jane Hamsher.
nahant,
If you have or come upon a cheap used or refurbed monitor, I could really use one.
I’m using my older son’s ancient monitor and it’s like 2 1/2 feet deep, I barely have room for the keyboard on the desk.
Hey guys, we are gonna be doing a huge announcement of some things soon, be sure to sign up for Donita’s email list on her website.
Hey ES,
You remember the other night when I told you these sublimal Bush images on tv were bugging me. Well, I found another one on a recording of KO! I wrote to Countdown but haven’t heard anything back.
Basil Faisal, Untitled
Oil on Canvas, 14 X 12 Inches, 2006
It’s the painting with the irrigation canal, palms and huts in the background.
Reminds me of Van Gogh. Doesn’t resemble his work so much, just reminds me of him.
I like it because it struck a chord as soon as I looked at it. None of the others did that. “Phoenix” would have been my second choice because of the symbolism of rising from the ashes.
I like : Mohammed Al Zobaidi, “The White Lane” – it’s reminds me a dream I’ve made years and years ago and sometimes “pop”! in my head and I never know why…
Thanks
gtg but if anyone has anything to say about still photos of Bush/Cheney/Hastert embedded in their telebishun, I’ll check back in. No, I’m not wearing tinfoil today. too hot.
thx.
Wow.. Please tell me if you get a reply. Might have to change your name to E.E.dosido. (eagle eye)
More often than not you just need to relax and approach the creative instinct uncritically and live with it over time. Where there is temperament there is talent.
Hi Eureka,
I was on All Things Considered on NPR yesterday for the things I’m doing with my new endeavor C.A.S.H. Music.
The piece was about artists doing things DIY in honor of Apple Records 40th anniversary.
My upcoming tour dates are at my website:
http://donitasparks.com/?page_id=52
Thanks for asking!
I heard you on NPR! Nothing like interacting with Famous People here on FDL!!
Will ya be on a tour bus? And why do y’all hate the south? /s
Here’s a link to the NPR piece:
http://www.npr.org/templates/s…..d=90478696
Please note, I’m not the one holding the Grammys.
Duly noted, however, Gold plated statues are nice but they’re not worth the ass kissing one has to go through to get them.
No, we’ll be cramped in a van. It’s all part of my rock and roll fantasy.
We don’t hate the South, it’s just getting very expensive to tour these days.
w00t, thanks.
(I wasn’t understand this “D:” last week. I got it this week :-S But this is not important)
Not yet. *ahem*
I guess it’s you! And I’m gonna put it on myspace pics section… ;-D
Wow – a lot’s been said :>
internet is slow today :/
And I used to complain about two dollar gas in Mexico. sigh.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV4qdf_V2OU
then you’ll love this one: play backwards youtube playlist tunes
And “life won’t wait” eh buddy?! ;-)
CTuttle says the NSA handlers didn’t get their daily ration of fat pills.
Is that you? *g
OK everyone, I’m off. New thread upstairs. Have a great weekend, see you next week here at The Spin. Make a donation to Iraqi Art if you can.
it was an empathy frown D:
FYI, new post upstairs
Nope, that’s Suzi Quatro
Bye Donita! Have a good night!
bye Donita :-(
Hi young Jess, I wonder (not the first time) how you know Donita & L7? I mean you are very young and it’s interresting… But maybe I’m too curious…
OK that’s it, I’m gonna put a bullet in my f…g cactus head! Adios amigos!
:-*
Well I found out about L7 through the awesome music streaming program Last.fm along with some other great bands. I had the crappiest music taste until I discovered that program and heard L7 and many other great bands
Have a good weekend Cactus, I’m out too
Oh, thank you… A few weeks ago, a man who was older than I (I have 41) said he did’nt really know L7 but like Don and was here. I love that…
Ah ok, a nice w-e to you too guy :-*
Donita,
I don’t know why I said harmonizing. I do know that you play the same thing, except for Suzi’s solo. We’re using the Hollywood Rock video.
But the drop D tip should help.
I’ll let you know what happens next week!
I love this column.
