Wednesday, John Edwards endorsed Barack Obama. There is no shortage of articles digging into the endorsement, the potential attached strings (nothing substantiated), the potential split between John and Elizabeth's support (again nothing substantiated), and what it means for the Democratic party horserace in highly broad, speculative terms.
What none of the reports really address is the substance -- the gut and heart level issues -- that Edwards spoke about, which got an incredible reaction from the Michigan crowd.
Which, frankly, is altogether too familiar in political reportage given the dismissive and superficial tone of so much of the coverage of him when he was a candidate. I, however, refuse to just let it be -- because the speech was a barn burner, and listening to it was like taking a long, cool drink of water on a parched day...and it is one that we need to hear, loud and clear.
I've attached a YouTube of the speech in its entirety. If you missed it, do take the time to watch it in full. You'll thank me later.
He begins with some lovely words about Sen. Hillary Clinton, praising her long work for children and families, and saying that “[w]e are a stronger party because Hillary Clinton is a Democrat, we are a stronger country because of her years of public service, and we’re going to have a stronger presidential nominee in the fall because of her work.” Good for him, because she's worked her ass off -- and compassion, understanding and mutual respect are things we are in far too short a supply of these days.
From there, Edwards laid out why he was endorsing Sen. Barack Obama. And this is what I want most to amplify from it:
What brought all of us together is the profound belief that we can change this country. That there are servicemen and women in Iraq who can come home -- starting today. That our kids deserve to go to better schools than we went to. That we can run our cars on something other than oil. That we have good jobs that can fill these empty factories. And that the anxiety that all of our people face every day can change when we finally make two Americas, one America -- for every single one of us.
This is why you are here -- you are here because of the hope that you carry in your heart to make this country better....
There is another wall that divides us -- it's the moral shame of the 37 million of our own people who wake up in poverty every single day. In a nation of our wealth, to have millions of Americans who work every single day and still can't pay their electric bill and pay for their food at the same time. There are mothers out there who work two jobs every day to try to keep their kids from going to bed hungry. There are men and women who have worked hard all their lives so that they can try and buy a home, and they are living in a tent city because they have got nowhere else to go. This is not okay.
And for eight, long, long years, this wall has gotten taller. Yesterday...yesterday I was in Philadelphia, and I was announcing an initiative to cut poverty in America in half in the next ten years. And I am proud to say that today, Barack Obama stands with me in this cause....
If we stand together, we can change it.
Recently, selise mentioned how wonderful a conversation could be about what matters to folks in this country the most, and what ideas they have for making things better.
We must end the "I've got mine. You don't have any? Too fricking bad for you." mentality. One of the reasons that I am liberal is that I understand the long-term implications of such a greedy, short-sighted attitude, and what sort of benefit we could be getting from an "I've got mine. How can I help you get some, too?" shift in thought process. The "teach a man to fish" mentality has been tossed aside for far too long. When human beings are constantly told they are worthless, both through public attitudes and policies which further marginalize them? What else do we expect than for them to act the way that they are conditioned to feel.
Well, here's my theory -- one hard earned working with criminals, juveniles and neglected kids through the years: some folks you can't save, because they have been too broken to fix. But some folks, you can help out by simply showing some compassion, some respect, and some kindness and by helping them learn to respect and care for themselves.
This is especially true with at risk kids who can flourish if they are simply given a glimpse of who they could be, of a future that is brighter, and of someone caring enough to help them make it happen. But you can't know who you can help to lift themselves up to something better -- for themselves, their families, their community -- unless you try. And by trying, you lift yourself up in the process as well.
Wouldn't we all be better off in that America? What problems do you see...and what do you suggest as ways to fix them? Let's get that conversation started...

G’morning, Christy and pups.
((((( Christy )))))
Watching the speech made me wish all over again, that John is in the White House on Jan. 20, 2009.
Yay, Christy, and Yay John Edwards.
Good morning, Christy - it’s cool and rainy here in Upstate New York. A good place for us to start, I think, is for us all here at FDL to ‘take the pledge’ and respect one another. All..the…time.
Thanks for this, Christy.
Yes, the mainstream media did a fly-by on coverage.
There was another compounding problem that may have encouraged it, but the media permits it and doesn’t fight it. At the event in Grand Rapids, the media was penned in and couldn’t leave their press box — a problem if you’re trying to cover this with a laptop on a liveblog, believe me.
But they also didn’t talk with the attendees.
And they didn’t cover the protesters before or after the event.
Nor did they notice that both Obama and Edwards pulled away in the same vehicle together afterwards, with Edwards smiling and waving to the crowd.
The mainstream media had already bailed out.
Before we start, any update on Quaker Girl?
Amen.
Amen again.
And there are some folks who “get” this. These are the folks we need. To help the ones who can benefit.
When I was 8 years old I had an epiphany. I took stock of the world and my place in it. I had a home. I had parents. I had food. I had clothing. I went to school. I had a good mind. And I could see: Ok, I’ve been given all these things. And now I have a responsibility to use them to help the people who don’t have all these things.
I have no idea how, as a child, I already knew that these blessings were not a commentary on me - that they were not something I deserved. But instead were something I had been given…. so that I in turn could give. (honestly, at the time that thought scared me! cuz I was only 8 years old!)
Seems to me there are lots of people like myself.
So we need to focus on the people you’ve identified, Christy. And we also need to identify the folks, like myself and yourself and probably all who frequent this place, who “get it” and want to help.
Time for a little Spotlight! We need to be sure to make good use of that feature. It is a great agent for change.
With twenty years of working in mental health I can vouch for the truth in these sentiments. A little compassion and understanding go a long, long way. You can see the change in the eyes of those we help. Gives you a wonderful warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Barnburner Mama Indeed !!!
ooh how you lawyers can speechify, ‘cept of course we the people were the jury . . .
was standing up cheering in the ol FDL Wheelhouse, and that the presumptive nominee no doubt knew what he was gonna say meant he wasn’t ever gonna walk back from it was the cherry on top for this dfh
hey Mornin’ All
Total agreement.
As a yoga/meditation teacher, I often give motivational talks at schools, often with “at risk” kids and afterwards, many of them come up to thank me and say they never heard anyone say:
1. How much potential they have.
2. How to realize that potential in simple steps.
The best part is the look on their faces when I tell them how Einstein, Churchill and other famous people
started off as “educationally challenged” individuals.
The conventional thinking is, you’re either born to succeed or fail and nothing is further from the truth.
We all have the same potential and tapping it begins with self respect, not getting the latest
toy/clothes/video games …
Yep.
Thanks Christy for this post. On a personal level, I’m worrying NOW about coming up with $2,000 for next winter’s heating fuel. But I do understand the idea of how respect of each other has been lost on some.
CASE IN POINT: I was sitting in my car early in the morning at one of my customer’s homes finishing up my cig. As I was sitting there, a worker on the next property (the homes are old and are all squished together near the ocean. A one lane road separates my customer from her neighbors on each side) started looking around and then proceeded to walk over to my customer’s old rock wall, took a stone right out of it, and then walked backwards to his truck looking around again to see if anyone noticed! I sat there shaking my head. So, I got out of my car and yelled, “Hey!” (he was @ 12 feet from me…again, the properties are close), “Did you just take a stone from my customer’s wall?”, and he said, “It was just laying there”, and I said, “So? You don’t own this property do you?”, and he said, “No”, and I asked, “Well then why the hell did you take it?!!!!”, and he said back to me, “I need it because I’m parked on a hill”. I look at his truck which is perfectly level and not one degree tilted. I said, “No you’re not. NOW PUT IT BACK!!!!“. He did.
The “funniest” part? I find out from my customer after describing the man to her and telling her the name of the business on the side of the truck….that the man is owner of the company! Yeah, yeah, he’s middle aged too. I bet he also voted for George Bush twice. Spit.
Unfreakingbelievable. This guy had a nice gold watch on and was dressed nicely, meaning, he’s not doing the work, but just stands around and steals rocks from walls so he can make his own wall on his own property!!! (Or use the rocks on another of his customer’s properties and then charging them an arm and a leg for the rocks!).
Sick of disrespectful people and those who can’t understand why their actions are a disgrace to our society.
Okay, now that I got that off my chest, I’m going to work now! LOL
Have a great day everyone. ;-)
If it doesn’t writhe or bleed (Iraqis and American soldiers excepted), spew, wear skimpy outfits that, from top to bottom, measure a total of 24 inches, burn, rob, rape, or play ball, it isn’t “newsworthy.”
Christy, your post is wonderful. Hope is what fueled the formation of this country. Hope is what’s gotten us through the Bush junta’s years. And as you noted, the transforming thing is to convert hope to action and to bring some to those who utterly despair. Right here in the good old U.S. of A. and beyond.
Now I must watch the Edwards speech. Thanks for the link to it.
You shouldn’t have been scared, children around 7- 8 years of age have a great deal of selfless realizations, before the marketing companies have had a chance to turn them into hoarders of the latest gadgets …
My favorite meditation students are kids of this age … the revelations that come out of their mouths is truly mind boggling …
Good on you!
If more people actually called out the @ssholes such as the one you describe vs. turning a blind eye, there would be fewer of them doing their evil deeds (both large and small).
Wow, both your and Edwards’ words made me tear up. You both write from the heart (and your own material). :-) I wanted Edwards to keep on going! But having JRE energy as any part of BO’s administration… that will be great. Mellencamp was there, right?
He talked about the wall being tight around the WH, too, I think. THAT super-gated community. I just heard 23% of the American income goes to the top 1%. Time to change that ratio for the fairer. Sounds like he got a good commitment from BO for some programs, at least.
This was very touching from you:
Yeah… a partnership, altruistic society, not a patriarchal, ccrporate-controlled one. I think we all are yearning to rebuild ourselves as a nation. Maybe we took not being codependent too far as a social community. And that was exploited by an administration that wedged us apart at every opportunity.
We have two alternatives. Hierarchy or capitalism with people using accumulations of money to prove difference (superiority). The other possibility, equality (utopia) recognizes that no matter what we do in this life we remain human. As an Italian proverb has it, after the game the pawn and the king go into the same box.
Capitalism cannot regulate rapidly evolving technological societies. It is simply too inefficient, but some so need to feel superiority, cooperation seems out of the question. Toshiba and Sony battled out the standards for high def television. Surely there must have been something in Toshiba’s system worth including in Sony’s, but we have a winner take all mentality. We need a commission to evaluate various contributions to a technology and perhaps allocate profits, if profit there must be. All three of our auto companies work on a hydrogen powered car with the opposite of cooperation. Each conceals its technology which means each plows the same ground.
We must understand the attraction of hierarchy and capitalism. What makes us want to differentiate between individual humans? If you want my idea on the subject click on my name.
What has really, REALLY chapped me are the so-called progressives that bad-mouthed Edwards for not coming out and endorsing Obama sooner. I have heard and read the most vile stuff about him, this man who was the only candidate to actually go to NOLA and do anything to help alleviate the suffering of residents, the only candidate who tried to put the focus back on the invisible victims of Katrina and governmental neglect and abuse by launching his campaign there.
Edwards has surely waited until the right time to endorse Obama — waited until he voted himself for the man, waited until he was assured that the right candidate would further the agenda of One America.
I only wish that the hideous mess that was Michigan’s primary hadn’t cost Edwards a greater chance at realizing that vision of One America.
What I saw was not only the heart and gut issues that John spoke of, but that he spoke from his heart; that he had genuine compassion and that is such a rare thing among politicians.
I think it would be great if he were Veep with his agenda to halve poverty in 10 years. I thought Barack was inspired by John’s presence, which is a good thing for the next POTUS …
Agreed - I think that guy tried to do that because he thought he could get away with it.
It was a scary thought to have all alone… and feel this huge responsibility. It was an awesome kind of scary! It’s ok that a kid know that and also that a kid be aware of their feelings.
But that thought never left me! And that is what is important.
Please, never tell anyone “not to feel that way.” Feelings are important. I’m sure you didn’t mean it the way it sounded.
Peace.
Thanks Christy, I hadn’t seen the speech.
You asked things we can do? I think we have to change the way we fund public schools. The income level of a neighborhood shouldn’t be the determining factor in quality of teaching, or quality of facilities and equipment.
The idea that impoverished kids deserve an impoverished eduction is insane
Good Morning Rayne,
this one may have got lost amidst all the Dems-Get-Spinal-Transplant stories yesterday - but something tells me ya heard about it
Senate Smacks Down Media Consolidation
yeppers, was disheartened after watching this on Moyers several months back, even though it was sooo refreshing to see and hear the public pushback, didn’t think Congress would act - well, whaddaya know ?
“You oughta be ashamed of yourselves for not respecting the democracy you live in !”
sing it brother
I think the challenge is for parents and other adults who impact young people to realize that these kinds of thoughts are within the capacity of children, and to nurture them as much as possible.
At 8 my son told me he wanted to be president of the United States, because surely he could do a better job than George Bush. I had everything I could do not to burst into tears of pride that someone his age could so readily see that even a child could do good and do better.
((((( Elliott )))))
I thought the crowd’s response to John Edwards was great and that he could galvanize support for his initiatives across the country. I would love to have him implement these policies as Veep …
It’ll also help refill Obama’s well for the balance of the campaign. The man must be absolutely exhausted. And how ironic that an essentially peaceful man is being sucked into the eye of the McHurricain.
It just occurred to me that one way to harness American goodness, writ large, is that if every rally from now until forever left the rally site and went directly to undertaking something life-changing (building a Habitat house, for example). Or many smaller somethings. The “price of admission,” being a voluntary donation.
I don’t want to see him as VP, I think he can do wonderful things in any of a number of cabinet or other key positions. His litigation experience against corporations could do wonders in cleaning up some of the mess that is Washington DC right now.
What Waccamaw said.
John Edwards for Atty. General.
Liberty and Justice for all. Let it begin in DoJ.
Wow, that’s HUGE, cbl2, I missed that one. That’s an enormous decision in a state like Michigan, where 95% of the newspapers are owned by 2 companies.
We were so busy with Obama coverage and other state-level content that we missed that one. I’ll see if we can get somebody to cover it here in MI since goodness knows the mainstream media here won’t.
but I’ll take him as VP, too
(((Petro)))
Fine post, Christy. Edward’s speech was great and Obama’s following was also fine. I actually got the impression that Obama had agreed to allow Edwards to emphasize the committment of Obama to all of the themes of the Edwards campaign.
They all emphasized what I’ve always thought of as a central difference between Democrats and Republicans. Since FDR, Democrats have viewed the nation as a team effort, with a social contract binding all citizens. Republicans view it as a sort of geographic enclosure in which social Darwinism plays out. You have your Serengeti plain and then you have the United States, in either place, you’re either a predator, or food. The only difference is that the lions don’t need to convince the wildebeest that it’s all for their own good.
Maybe we have a chance to bring back the idea that we all work together for the good of the whole.
Well, that’s puttin’ it politely. In my book, people who do such things have varying degrees of plain ol’ rot in their souls…..however one defines the word “soul”.
Short rant. *g*
I taught kids that age for 8 years before changing professions.
If we want a better environment, a better society, we need to educate young children. Yes, children see the world as it is. They are idealistic. They want a better world.
I so agree!
That was exactly my message, although it probably was not as clear as you put it … parents have to be better educated to help children realize their potential rather than turn them into little “consumer bots” …
I agree. A good dose of integrity will do wonders. If we have principled leaders in government we’ll get principled people who want to become public servants.
There’s not a leech at DOJ that can hold a candle to Edwards.
Since Cheney has turned OVP into such a powerful entity, I feel that Edwards could use that power for good … Darth becomes Luke … *g*
Waving Hi to everyone from JFK airport……
That is why Edwards was my guy….. and Howard Dean before him…… Just hope Obama has a nice slot planned for Edwards so he can continue working on these issues.
Prayer of the hopeless: Dear God (if there is a God), bless my soul (if I have a soul).
“[w]e are a stronger party because Hillary Clinton is a Democrat, we are a stronger country because of her years of public service, and we’re going to have a stronger presidential nominee in the fall because of her work.”
I totally agree with these words, the world is a better place because of Hillary’s work and she will continue to make it better, whatever positon she holds after Jan 20, 2009.
The Edwards/Obama appearance was in West Michigan which is a bastion of conservative Republicanism. When they can get the kind of reception they received the Republicans are looking more and more like a cipher.
Aloha, katymine, happy travels!
Yup, me too, Dean > Edwards — both smart people with the kind of ethics we need, and now hoping that Obama will be able to utilize them to the fullest in the next administration.
Edwards for AG, Dean for HHS!!!
not to take anything away from the graciousness of his remarks about HRC - I thought it was really him giving superdels permission to come out come out wherever you are
((((( katymine )))))
A little joke for where you are …
I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, ‘Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?’ To which I replied, ‘If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?’
He smiled knowingly and nodded, ‘That’s why we ask.’
One thing that needs to be done is to vigorously prosecute employers who exploit their workers. Here are two outrageous stories from the Postville, Iowa debacle.
I would prefer Dean continue as head of DNC for the 2010 and 2012 elections but I bow to your wisdom … he would be great in HHS or any other cabinet post …
If only you knew…Obama appeared in Macomb County earlier in the day. Minni, who covered the event, said she had a very hard time finding anybody who wasn’t an Obama supporter — and Macomb County was one of the strongest Bush counties in the U.S., went 85% for Bush in 2004 thanks to all the so-called “Reagan Democrats” in that area.
Grand Rapids, by contrast, is old-school Republican, home of the DeVos and Van Andel families and Christian fundie country; somebody else pointed out that Van Andel was likely spinning in his grave to know that a Democratic black candidate had packed the arena named for him.
bwaahaahaa !
caught that too - was thinking it was the antithesis of Reagan announcing at the site of the civil rights murders - in your face facists!
Am I crazy or do I recall correctly that either the DeVos family or VanAndel family is associated with Blackwater?
Jane’s upstairs!
My best friend who left several months ago to work for Deere was a foreman at Agriprocessors who shared stories with me. They were so scary that I urged him to whisleblow, but with the whistleblowers going straight to Cheney etal I advised him just to get the heck out.
Something smells indeed in Postville.
The problem with HHS is that it would render him comparatively invisible (though doing the hard work that needs to be done). Edwards needs to be in a position to speak publicly and boldly, often. The contrast between John Edwards and Darth could not be more striking. Even the symbolism of that is flat-out stunning. A bottom feeder and a man who lives in the bright light of day. Ohmygosh. I’m listening to his speech now, and the tears are just a tumbling down. We have hope, people. And that’s vastly greater than a campaign slogan.
It’s hard for people to ‘do the right thing’ when they are faced with that sort of threat. Takes not only courage but an almost ‘devil may care’ attitude about possible blowback.
The son of DeVos is the founder and ubber leader of Blackwater. The DeVos family are Michigan’s royal family of fascism.
I was in Postville not too long ago. Just walking the streets you could see and feel something was tragically wrong. You don’t often see poverty like that in the Tall Corn State. About the only good thing I found was that beer was a $1.00 a bottle at a local watering hole.
I think your friend will find that Deere is a much better employer.
That was my take, if John can’t be POTUS, he should hold the second most powerful office to further his agenda.
Actually, Erik Prince is the heir and scion of Edgar Prince of the automotive supply company, Prince Corporation.
Erik is Betsy Prince DeVos brother, and Dick DeVos’ brother-in-law.
Icky-boo-boo.
Thanks for the correction. Whatever the connection the family is extreme right wing and a threat to democracy. They would surely have supported the attempted fascist coup of FDR that Smedly Butler exposed. They support the current soft fascism of today’s Republican Party.
I was an Edwards supporter and still am. I thought the speech was excellent: typical Edwards. I heard a sincere, magnanimous, generous and respectful reaching out to Hillary Clinton and her supporters. As soon as the speech was over, the first comment from a talking head on MSNBC went something like this: ” I thought that Senator Edwards was very patronizing to Hillary Clinton.” YIKES! I guess it’s all in the “ear” of the beholder. Why won’t any in the press give Edwards credit for actually caring about people? This from the same people who pronounced George Bush a “man of the people; good ol’ boy from Midland, TX; someone you’d want to sit and have a beer (or a snort of coke) with.” The people within the Beltway need to be treated for PTSD. They’ve been there too long … their minds are obviously addled … they need HELP!
Thank you for another great post, Christy!
Amen, sister. That mentality has sucked this country dry and it has made it’s citizens as unhappy, angry and depressed about the state of our country as I’ve ever seen. Down deep we all know that we are better than this culture of greed. That’s why I love John Edwards and I am so glad that he is still a part of this process.
And yes it does feel so good to share with others our knowledge, our resources and care so that they can see in themselves their potential also. Now we need those values in our leaders as well as our citizens. I am so looking forward to that change in November!
Christy — thank you so much for this post. It is spot on. It says better than I could ever say why I am a much maligned “librul” and why so many of us are desperate for change and the kind of change we’re looking for. I am so glad we have someone like you to capture these ideas and help move us forward, beyond the dark hole and muck we’ve been wallowing in for so long now.
I agree with the general sentiment, but for the life of me I cannot understand who the “all of us” is. When I hear Edwards now my reaction is to watch my back because I feel I’m being suckered. YMMV, and good luck with that.
Hi Christy. You wrote:
If we set up a system like that, some will take advantage of it. People have a visceral reaction against being played for a sucker, and you can be sure a program like that will provide anecdotal evidence of just that. How do we anticipate it and prepare to persuade people that even taking that into account it is in our enlightened self interest to support the program? Because if we don’t it will get outraged into oblivion when the first examples surface.
I wish there were a program where an American family can “adopt” an Iraqi family. I’d like to encourage us to get to know them by helping them, those who are displaced, who have lost family members who never had anything to do with this atrocity, to give what we can to help them in their day to day lives, and not just money. Could we send them sneakers for their kids, bags of rice, WHATEVER, but through the giving actually get to KNOW our family. I’d like to do that, if for no other reason than to let them know that we as a people ARE NOT WITH STUPID!
Sheesh . . . I am too damn old to tear up like a baby. Every time Obama, Edwards or Clinton speak I honestly believe that very soon this nightmare will end and that hard work and morality will be rewarded. Yes - we can . . . .
I really liked how he set the tone for the nomination with respecting Hillary for her accomplishments. It is the same tone that Obama keeps coming back to. Respect for differences, brush off the trivial distractions, and focus on the issues.
ah, i wish i’d been here for this one…. i sooo much to say on the topic.
hope there will be another time for this, when the servers aren’t having trouble. because i think there is a fundamental issue that we’re not addressing.
this works for kids, and i’m behind it 100% - for children.
but i completely reject the idea that i know what adults need, that it’s my job to teach anyone. i think it’s my job to ask if i can help, and then to follow the lead of those who are in need, who are oppressed and who are suffering. because they know best and it’s my job to learn from them.
when we believe we know best or when we act like we do, we foster resentment - and even more importantly, we don’t give very good help.
btw, this is i think, the source of what rings true for people when liberals are despised for their elitism. it’s not so much so the car or the coffee - it’s the attitude of “i know best” that is so very destructive both domestically and in our foreign policy.
and that btw is why, in addition to his record as a senator, is why i could never get fully behind edwards. it wasn’t his hair cuts or his big house (although that doesn’t help), it was the attitude that he knows better than the poor what they need.
On the ironically titled “Your World Today”, CNN’s ‘host’ just labeled Obama’s specifically scheduled speech to address the incendiary nazi-/Hitler comments made by George Bush In Israel, as an “Oprah-esque event”.
Nazis = Oprah??
I don’t think even the Republicans would have tried such a rotten slur.
This was produced, written directed and choreographed by CNN, the network. Their hosts say what they are paid to say and it happens much to frequently to blame on bloopers spoken by a stream of newbies.
So Christy, thanks to our Congress and Supreme Court -both of whom bend over backwards for every whim by George Bush and the Chamber of Commerce, we’ve transgressed into the propaganda laden media environment seen only in those ‘backward’ countries of Communist China, North Korea and Russia.
The vile nature of our media is such that it can no longer be said that it’s our political parties at the root of our problems anymore. Rather the media conglomerates like CNN now represents a new viral strain of a cancer grown so resistant and so all powerful, they’re destroying the very host they fed off of.
When Obama takes the helm in ‘09 and new fresh blood flows into the 111th, and the FCC, they better hit this issue hard -and break up these monopolies .
Or they’ll never see the 112th.
This video chokes me up. Thank you for posting it, and for your inspiring post Christy.
Well said Christy.
