-- Jay Leno asked Howard Dean if the new "Democratic White House Victory Fund" could be used to pay off Hillary Clinton's campaign debt. Dean responds that they "can't do that," contra what campaign finance sources indicated this morning. Dean didn't elaborate on why that was.
-- Progressive Media, the 527 formerly headed by Tom Mattzzie and David Brock, seems to be DOA. The Obama campaign put out the word that he was worried about independent groups being off-message, and that his donors shouldn't fund them. Some have speculated that this is because the Obama campaign doesn't want any negative messaging, even at arm's length, no matter how bloody things get on the GOP side (and the NC Wright ads were a good indication of where that's going). Sources close to the group, however, say that the recent re-organization under Paul Begala failed to include Obama people who would have made the campaign comfortable. I can't imagine a world where Obama gets eaten alive by GOP 527s and loses the race on the high road, and imagine if they eventually deem that funding such an organization is necessary it will be done under the auspices of Obama loyalists. Meanwhile, downticket races that might have benefited from such efforts? SOL.
-- Joe Lieberman goes all swooning and breathless as he gushes over Bush's Iran threats. Meanwhile, Joe Klein says he may have made a mistake supporting Lieberman over Lamont in '06: "I gave Lieberman the benefit of the doubt against Ned Lamont in 2006, even though I disagreed with him about the war. I shouldn't have." He goes on to credit his colleague, Michael Scherer, with making the first Zell Miller/Lieberman analogy. Sorry Joe, I think that honor goes to The General and his commenters -- in 2006.
-- The Senate vote to throw out the FCC's recent media ownership rule change could come as early as tonight. If you're so inclined, you can find information to call your Senator and tell them to support the Resolution of Disapproval here.
Why is Hillary still in the race? According to Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor (and Obama supporter):
She wants the best possible deal she can strike with Obama. She wants Obama to agree to pay her campaign debts, to seat the Michigan and Florida delegations (so she can claim a moral victory), and – the quietest deal of all – a personal commitment from him to appoint her to the Supreme Court when the next vacancy occurs. (h/t Jim M.)
--Taking money from California schools to pay for more prisons? Color of Change says just say no.
-- John McCain refuses to say Obama isn't a Hitler appeaser. Aravosis: "Now in all fairness, John McCain may still think that we're at war with Hitler."
-- And the Marcia Blackburn Award for choking on your Republican talking points goes to... Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas). Brutal smackdown once again delivered by...Dave Obey.

OT: I just watched Chis Matthews, in a discussion with Mark Green and some nitwit talk show guy, earn a huge Attaboy which overcame several hundred of this Awshits. The subject is appeasement, Neville Chamberlain, etc. It is definitely worth watching. Sorry for the OT.
Wonder how Reich would know what, if anything, Hillary is demanding. Maybe he just pulled it out of his ass?
Hillary on the Supreme court?!? That’s a deal with the devil I’d want no part of. I’m going to assume that means she has realized that VP is a non-starter.
Boxturtle (And maybe she’s realizing that her re-election in NY is not a sure thing now)
Appeasement? BULLSHIT!
Woohoo!
Neither of the Clintons have any substantive experience practicing law or any judicial experience and neither should ever be appointed to the Supreme Court
Could very well be.
Somewhat OT: americablog has a post about the VA directing employees NOT to diagnose returning vets with PTSD. CREW and VoteVets have the goods:
http://www.citizensforethics.org/node/31690
Yeah, the VA supports the troops.
Did anyone mention that the White House has two explanations as to whom Clusterfuck was referring to in his speech?
Dana Peroxide says “not Obama” Other White House aids have said- “Oh yeah- he was talkin bout Obama”
Sounds as if we’ve got yet another White House fuck up- beginning with whomever allowed Clusterfuck to make his statement in the first place.
Robert Reich, a guy who eagerly gossips about former associates as he eagerly seeks acceptance. Maybe Hillary quietly (whispered perhaps?) that BO make single payer health care reform a priority in the next administration. I am so sich of people like Reich bringing others down to their level…(snark intended).
PW, Norske, ironranger and I would agree, Obey deserves honorary Minnesnowta status.
And a thought on Bush’s use of the Knesset to launch the smear campaign on Obama…this tactic will be the Mark of McCain. Clearly orchestrated today. And doubtless driven by the Rethug Rovian right’s realization that the usual Southern Strategy isn’t workin’ this year.
It’s a new low in Republican campaigning…but likely there’s even worse to come.
Bush cavalierly uses and insults the Israeli occasion and insults all of us, not just Democrats or Obama supporters. Slime is too good a word to describe him.
Spew alert.
Suicide blonde. Dyed by her own hand.
John McAnus has given Al Qaeda a “surrender date” of 2013.
-G
and that means that obama’s donors will salute and do as they are told?
In other Clusterfuck action- our president is seen promising eternal alleigance to a guy who is about to be indicted and kicked out of office.
Poor Clusterfuck- he doesn’t trust ANYONE who isn’t a fuckin criminal
“Joe Lieberman goes all swooning and breathless as he gushes over Bush’s Iran threats.”
My contempt for Joe Lieberman knows no bounds.
Clusterfuck lookin into guy’s souls again.
His mama must be awfully proud.
Jane -
was just composing a note to you asking you for your take on the Obama/527 issue - even outside the down ticket issue - portends so much, would just appreciate hearing more from you on this
and did you see what happened in the House today on Iraq funding ?
ps - did y’all see Conyers on Rove: “Someone’s Got to Kick His Ass”
He’s trying to find one that he can borrow since he doesn’t have one of his own.
Heh, heh….
McBush just put a timeline for both Afghanistan and Iraq….
Since he doesn’t have one of his own he’s trying to find one to steal.
Liebervurst sure does want a Persian Bombe
Wonder if he thinks it’s ICE CREAM or somethin….
Matthews showed that the talker, Kevin James, is an ignorant parrot and lemming.
James couldn’t state what Neville Chamberlain had done in Munich, he could only vomit up the word appeasement.
Matthews made James look like a dildo.
-G
EW pointed out in her brilliant post today, that Bush’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a Nazi appeaser.
Chimpy looked into Olmert’s eyes and say Marty Feldman looking back at him.
-G
You can Digg Jane’s post here!
Not only an appeaser, a collaborator.
say=saw.
-G
Clusterfuck continues his dedication to NOT TALKING to people who disagree with him.
“Whaddya think? They’re gonna change my MIND- or I’m gonna change THEM? That NEVER happens”
So a man cursed with adolescent communication skills opines that it’s really IMPOSSIBLE for one human to change the mind of another through rational discourse…NICE
So if these GOP-ers hate appeasers why is Ollie North a star in their eyes?
He gave the Iranian mullahs missiles for God’s sake. And a cake and a bible too.
-G
Clusterfuck has a lot in common with Neville according to Churchill.
Chamberlain was an arrogant twit who was so opinionated that he refused to listen to anyone who disagreed with him—went off half cocked cause he was too stupid to listen.
“McBush just put a timeline for both Afghanistan and Iraq….”
I don’t think so. He characterized his 2013 comment as a “vision”– i.e., a goal. He also set it for the year following the 2012 election. In other words, if elected, he can’t be held to his vision. But it is also in conflict with his “100 years” thought.
He deserves a takedown on this. Poor John. He doesn’t understand the difference between being a Senator, and being an executive.
Bob in HI
Obama will have so many new congress folk at his side because he will take care of and campaign with them. He knows this “cycle” is different, and expect him to stand with those that stand with him. The old democratic party cared about people, the new one appears to as well. The money won’t go to just his election, so those downstream elections are going to benefit like never before, watch!
But IMHO, it won’t go to Rahm “it” Emmanuel and his stooges. This in itself is likely a huge progressive gain in our congress. No interference from the people that successfully kept him off the ballot. No payout to corrupt congress people that care nothing about people and daily worship and oil the machine.
No, this is a brilliant decision that will bring real people together and make political stooges evaporate. And it will be in one little fell swoop that renders the old machine meaningless. It will be fun to watch.
“John McCain refuses to say Obama isn’t a Hitler appeaser.”
John McCain supports torture of human beings by the United States of America.
John McCain:
Worse than Bush
Clusterfuck’s actually got most of the history fucked up too.
The crucial mistakes that led to an inablity to confront Hitler happened WAY earlier- like allowing parity of forces between Germany and France- and the unilateral disarmnament of the UK after WW1..
Chamberlain couldn’t have put a respectable army in the field at the time of Hitler’s early aggressive moves if he had wanted to.
The mistakes had already been made by his predecessors.
“a guy who is about to be indicted and kicked out of office”
who?
Olmert.
Bob in HI
But the French could, and didn’t.
They could have and arguably should have marched when Hitler militarized the Ruhr Valley. Hitler’s military couldn’t have withstood the attack, it was pure bluff on his part. It’s likely the General Staff would have deposed him had the French acted on the breach of the Versailles treaty.

Sorry Jane, as far as I can tell, the honor goes to WOUNDED LIBERAL, March 19, 2005
no one in Europe planned for hitler except uncle joe. Hasn’t anyone seen that no one wanted war after the first world war? If you don’t know about the WW1, imagine having hundreds of thousands of troops killed in one day. Put yours together with the enemy, double up. They killed millions and they did it all in the same little geographical area. It was about stupidity and monarchial rule. Maybe the last one?
all the new wars are about stealing what you need to make war. except vietnam. there they had to find a way to use the toys so they could buy some more and pick up billions in bribes.
Yes- However the brits had been instrumental in co-ercing the french to accept military parity with Germany and to downgrade their forces..
Lots of people to blame in that- including Hitler.
After lowdmouthing about Obama as an appeaser, Chris Matthews asked him to explain exactly what Chamberlain did that was objectionable. The guy tries to bluff. I don’t want to say more. Matthews mentions Perino, the Cuban missile crisis, and uses the term “blank slate.” It’s fairly early in Hardball and takes about five minutes.
Now, I am not sure I would characterize Prescott Bush as a collaborator. I understand that word as being someone who cooperates with things, but is not a leader him or herself. Prescott Bush, if I’ve got it right, was a director of Brown Brothers Harriman Bank, which in partnership with their German partner Thyssen, provided the actual funds to get the Nazi war machine going. So, I would see Bush as an enabler rather than a collaborator. A small difference perhaps, but I think important. Just like I see IBM as an enabler as well, since they customized their Holerith card punch machines and provided the cards, technicians, etc. to the Nazi’s to do all their record keeping for The Final Solution.
On the Robert Reich quote:
So Senator Clinton body-blocks Senator Obama’s imminent nomination and wants:
- props
- to cut into the margin of victory
- $20 million in cash
- a black robe.
IMO, junior Senator from the Great State of New York works just fine.
that youtube is so sad. the republicans and the anti-war dems blocked the house dem leadership’s bank check war funding bill?
am i wrong in thinking that the biggest wins in the house this past year were when progressive dems and the Rs united against the house dem leadership?
There is also a great passage in Churchill’s six volume history of the war in which he warns future generations from over reading the significance of the failure to act more quickly- saying something like “In most cases it will always be better to wait and watch and use diplomatic means- it would be a HUGE mistake to conclude that early military action is the best route in facing conflict”
(or something like that- I’m too lazy to get up and find the quote).
Thanks- I’d like to see it. Wonder if Tweety knows the history?
Uncle Joe didn’t plan for the war. Or at least he didn’t plan for the war he got.
He purged his officer corps, ignored all the intelligence that came in saying AH was going to attack sooner than later, and came within a couple of weeks of losing his country.
What you’re right about is that no one (save Hitler) wanted another war.
BC
would reich have good sources for the inside scoop or is he just guessing?
salute? hmmm interesting choice of words considering the discussion of Bush’s remarks at the Knesset. Maybe the thing is to look at why his campaign wants to shut out 527s. To preserve the campaign’s message? control freak? I’m sure a little googling might give some insight (or maybe not)
no kidding
I saw that and was howling laughing. Finally Matthews tells the guy that he doesn’t know what he is talking about. But my fav part early on is when Matthews asked the guy why he was yelling.
Miss Jane has been a busy lady I see.
Lieberman and Klein need to like, go to a drive in or something so they can kiss and make up.
Joey likes to kiss.
What’s interesting is if he will agree with McBush to both on public financing- thus giving up one of his biggest advantages.
I wish I had such faith in him. I’ve been worried about downticket races since the Tx primary where it was discovered that Obama voters failed to vote for downticket races in HUGE numbers. That’s a real problem. I hope he addresses it as you say. IMO, it’s a bit paranoid to try to preemptively demolish funding for progressive 527s when he hasn’t seen them work. It bothers me a lot.
Hot damn. I told the wife a few weeks ago that if I were Obama, I would privately communicate to Hillary that, “If I become President, you are in the number 1 slot for the Supreme Court” both as an honest pledge and as an offer to convince her to drop out.
She would be hard to keep out of the court…the whole Senate comity thing, respect and benefit of the doubt for a colleague, etc…she would be a GREAT SCOTUS judge to start the reshift of the balance on the court.
That would be an unwise move on his part.
I think it would be a mistake for Obama to agree to go on public financing. The presidential campaign funding system is broken, so let’s run a campaign without it. Donors still must be disclosed, and McSame going to look like fresh dog dung. His funders are the all the usual suspects. Obama’s going to be funded (mostly) by We The People.
Obama should make the broken campaign finance system an issue.
BC
“I disagreed with Lieberman about the war, but Lamont was against the war. You know, like a hippie. So Lieberman was the obvious choice.”
He goes on to credit his colleague, Michael Scherer, with making the first Zell Miller/Lieberman analogy.
Let me be the first to say: “Joe Klein? More like Joke Line!™” I totally invented that just now, so hands off!
Frankly, I’m not sure I’d want Paul Begala connected to a group I was trying to fund, either. This is the same guy who openly mocked the Mississippi state Democratic party activists Dean was funding as “nose-pickers”, comments that look even dumber now that the Democrats have won MS-01, the third special-election win in a row for the Dems — and one that couldn’t have happened without Dean’s paying those “nose-pickers” full-time.
I have to take a wait and see attitude on the 527s. In light of our political discourse where one must denounce and reject what everybody and uncle joe says, it may prove to be a wise move.
hmm I just re-read that. I hope it didn’t come off bitchy because it wasn’t meant in that spirit.
Just what we need. A corporatist former WalMart board member on the Supreme Court. And a person with little or no actual trial experience. Absolutely no experience as a judge or mediator. How many years has it been since she cracked a law book? Sounds like a Bush appointment.
The GOP’s 527s haven’t been doing that well lately. They tried bashing the Democratic candidates in IL-14, LA-06 and MS-01 with millions of dollars in attack ads, particularly ads linking them to Pelosi and Obama, and the Democrats won anyway.
After McCain and the Rethugs get their political and monetary asses handed to them this year, THEN we can discuss fixing the broken political funding thing. Until then, Obama should NOT go with public funding and should go with People Funding.
Any fix to campaign financing MUST include a ban on corporate political donations. Corporations do not exist except on paper, cannot vote, do not breath, eat, or anything else actual living people do, so no input in the political process.
but he was scared of hitler and fascism. He was the only ruler that was on guard against the repeat of the carnage of WW1.
O/T but thanks for the kitty info. She/He (can;t really tell yet) went to the vet this morning and is doing well (voracious appetite, peeing/pooping like mad) and very active). Vet says everyday she/he is still here, her/his chances for survival grow. they told me to come back in 6-8 weeks and they will give her/him all the necessary kitten shots and spay/neuter for free. They do this as a thank you for all who hand raise kittens/puppies.
My number two pick on the SCOTUS nominee list would be…
…I mean it, I’m not joking…
Anita Hill.
David’s upstairs on immigration and FOB (Friends of Bush)
but using negativity isn’t going to benefit the democrats this time. They have facts and video and a war and a recession to simply prove as fact. We know he has to have major support and not from blue dogs. I just think a positive attitude is going to make the folks addicted to hatred blow their tops and self destruct. They can hardly run a hate campaign if no one is responding to their childish behavior except by showing they are lying again.
I’ve read several pieces about folks no longer paying much attention to TV campaign ads of any type, particularly for local races. I’ve also talked to several local fundraisers and their emphasis is on other ways to communicate with voters, direct mail being the most popular, believe it or not. Not being in the PR biz I don’t know.
I would like to see a supreme court justice who is:
1) Young
2) IQ of 175
3) Total Non Idealogue..
4) Very persuasive
I don’t want someone who is practicing politics- the political winds will change- I want someone who is totally dedicated to the Bill of Rights and who thinks every issue through on it’s merits.
Of course, according to the Republicans, straight recitation of facts is going “negative” and out-of-bounds…
i had forgotten that. thank you for the reminder.
Winning without going negative is like winning when your quarterback is in the hospital. You’ll only win if you have a HUGE advantage otherwise- like a 5,000 pound running back.
jane - on the progressive media story, do you think your “Sources close to the group” are telling your the straight scoop? and what about reich? do you believe him?
Don’t worry. It didn’t come off as bitchy at all. I appreciate the sentiment. I really do. Been there myself a few times. :)
Is it goin negative to point out that McBush first voted for Washington and that he can’t keep shia and Sunnis straight?
If that’s too negative- then I’m pro negative.
EW said “enabler,” not “appeaser.” She was being kind to Granddaddy Prescott. Many people would call someone who made money from helping to finance Hitler (as did Granddaddy Bush’s company, apparently, while he was a director) a Collaborator.
An “appeaser” lets the bad guy take what he wants, even when it is not the bad guy’s to take. At Munich, Chamberlain persuaded the French, who had a military defense alliance with Czechslovakia, to tell the Czechs that they, the French would not honor the defense pact, so that the Czechs would have to fight the German Army alone. In other words, the appeasement at Munich involved England’s persuading France to dishonor a commitment to stand with an ally against a bully when the bully was intimidating the Czech ally.
Prescott Bush’s company did something worse; it apparently took an active role in giving the bad guy the money it needed to build a military force to take other people’s stuff - like Czechoslovakia.
There has been talk of the “appeaser” that Dubya referred to in his speech to the Knesset. As identified on CNN, long-time GOP U.S. Senator William Borah thought he could have talked Hitler out of seizing every weak state that bordered Germany, even though the democratic states did not have military forces to oppose any of Hitler’s aggressions.
Even Borah was not much of an “appeaser” - he mostly thought that the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans buffered the U.S. from armed conflicts between European nations or between Asian nations (Japan’s invasion of China, e.g.). Whereas Chamberlain withdrew security guarantees to Czechoslovakia, Borah had helped keep the U.S. out of the League of Nations, so that the U.S. had just stayed aloof from the complicated diplomatic landscape in Europe.
o/t biden rocking on the blitzer right now. righteous rant. wow. I’ve never seen him so angry on tv. he’s scoring big points. on msm. really
After all the scorched earth the goopers have left behind, let me quote Al Davis;
‘Just Win Baby”.
You can usually tell the sex of a kitten pretty easily. The space between the anus and the urinary opening is quite a bit bigger in a male than in a female. Of course, it helps to have one of each to compare ;-) There’s a good picture here: http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/kitx1.jpg
Yikes. Hope certain words in the above don’t land me in the filters.
That’s great news!! If the spay/neuter is done at 8 weeks I have some reservations about that. My vet prefers 6 months or, if female, before she goes into her first heat. In regard to the latter there’s no way to tell when the queen is going into heat until that first catterwallering starts. And that’s an experience you’ll never forget if ya have to wait a few days, or longer, to get her in. When she sleeps, you sleep. Otherwise, fugetaboutit.
OT, I just now got this in my Email from Mr. Wexler.
I am REALLY starting to like this guy;
Dear Busted,
I have a TiVo. I have yet to see a campaign ad for any race, except the ones they show as part of a Countdown segment. I suspect many people are like me and use DVRs to time shift and skip commercials.
Thanks msmolly. I still can’t tell. But being the feminist that I am, i always fall to the ’she’ pronoun first *g*
If you are an Obama supporter, perhaps you’ve seen something I missed. Has he ever shown any concern for downticket races? What makes you believe he’ll step up to the plate for progressives and not Rahm’s picks or even that he will know he should? That’s my concern.
Oh drat. i meant that the spat/neuter is free, not that it would happen at 6-8 weeks (that is just for the shots). I’m prety stoked that she is doing well and she is sleeping a good 4-5 hours at a time. I need to train myself to sleep when she does *g*
I can’t help but wonder if a subpoena for Rove would result in a letter from his attorney stating that Mr Rove will appear but will invoke his rights under the Fifth Amendment. I expect such letters will be sent from the attorneys of the others who have agreed to testify.
Yang was 8 weeks when I got her from Animal Control. Put her on the waterbed that first night and that’s always been her safe place. Spent all or part of every night on it to the end.
Ditto, Southern Dragon!
Appointing Clinton to the Supreme Court would also continue the harmful practice of appointing justices who have not spent many years representing individuals in a trial court, unless she had a lot more trial experience than I know about. One reason Justice O’Conner was not an ideologue was that she started her legal career in a family law and general practice from an office situated in a shopping plaza! Unlike Roberts, Alito, Thomas, Scalia - even Breyer - O’Conner had seen what applying the law to individuals meant, and how the average citizen could be hurt or helped by sensible application of the law.
awwww. I put a clock in the carrier with her (the whole heartbeat sound). I notice that when she is a lil chilled, she digs down into the towels and when she is warm, she just sleeps up top curled in little ball. As for the two fleas I found on her and couldn’t get off, i guess they will stay there until I can get them off (we have all wooden floors and leather furniture–so no place for those lil fuckers to hide
Big deal. Blah blah blah. These asshats make pretty noises, get all upset for the TV camera, but when it comes time to actually DO something about the latest outrage they scurry back to their dank, dark corner, mewl like wussy Dems, and hope that it will all blow over without having to do anything…”ugly” (like their constitutional duty).
I have no interest in Senators (or Congressasses) saying anything. It’s all words. There is NOTHING that could happen that would get them to impeach, actually enforce a subpoena, actually investigate, etc. They just spout about how outraged they are by the latest bullshit and then they simply say “Vote Democrat!” and expect that to do anything.
Wexler is a pile of doodie until he actually DOES something real (or forces his shitpile colleagues to do something). Words are shit.
Fleas don’t like leather furniture? Those little eggs will grow anywhere. A fine toothed flea comb should help. Then ya get to pop the lil bastards between two fingernails.
Your vet sounds like a keeper, btw.
I really think it’s a bad idea to put politicians on the bench…really bad.
I don’t think so. Not this shiny italian shit *g*
*going to call mr and tell him to pick up a flea comb on the way home*
We had LOTS of litters over the years, but it has been many years and my memory is hazy. I *think* the arrangement in the rear for a male is like a semi-colon, and a female is a colon. BUT could be the other way around.
So glad “s/he” is doing well. Give the kitteh a gender-neutral name and wait to see what develops.
LOL. I take it you’re not real fond of Italian leather furniture.
And I can’t imagine it here in Florida. Whoa, peel me offa this thing!
I was that obvious, huh? I like leather furniture just not this particular shiny stuff that I stick too in the summer and suffer freezer burn in the winter. But it came with the house and we’re not willing to plop down money on someting else soooooo
maybe some nail clippers are in order? i have a leather sofa, and if i keep the cat’s nails clipped there isn’t a problem.
otoh, i don’t think there is any such thing as one flea. if the kitten wasn’t so young i’d be advocating for emergency action - take the cats out of the house for a flea bath and while they’re gone take appropriate action to rid the house. but that was necessary when i lived in dallas, since moving north i haven’t seen a flea.
Just think, Anita Hill and Clarence Thomas sitting on the same bench. Talk about real life being stranger than fiction. But justice would finally be served.
