Ad Nags sure does love writing those "Party In Disarray" stories – I’m not sure he even knows how to write anything else. He prefers to write about Democrats, but the Republicans are much more obliging these days:

The Republican defeat in a special Congressional contest in Mississippi sent waves of apprehension across an already troubled party Wednesday, with some senior Republicans urging Congressional candidates to distance themselves from President Bush to head off what could be heavy losses in the fall.

(…)

Representative Tom Davis, Republican of Virginia and former leader of his party’s Congressional campaign committee, issued a dire warning that the Republican Party had been severely damaged, in no small part because of its identification with President Bush. Mr. Davis said that, unless Republican candidates changed course, they could lose 20 seats in the House and 6 in the Senate.

(…)

Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York, said it appeared that lawmakers might have to fend for themselves. “You are going to have to run on who you are and establish some independence, and that is going to be tougher for some than others,” Mr. King said.

Yeah, good luck with that, guys.  See, the thing is, you’ve all spent the last two, four, six, or eight years giving the Worst And Most Unpopular President Ever everything his tiny little heart desires, and the voters know it.  Sure, it was fun winning all those votes on the Iraqupation and torture and S-CHIP, but now you have to actually justify them.

You even have to own the votes you didn’t win, like the ones you cast against the minimum wage increase last year, or the ones you cast today against the New & Improved GI Bill.  Enjoy explaining to the voters why you don’t think our troops deserve a college education – I’ll just be over here making fun of you.

Your blind loyalty to the Dubyatross was why you lost both houses of Congress in 2006, and yet you learned nothing.  You continued to back up Mr. 28% like it was September 2001, like he was still the 90%-approval biggest bully on the block… and now you want us to believe that you’re just not that into him?

Sure, you’ll spin and distract and lie, like you always do, and the corporate media will play along, like they always do.  But it won’t be enough to convince the American people that you love children’s healthcare and hate the Iraqupation.  And guess what: That goes for your presidential candidate as well.  For all his maverickiness, everyone knows that McCain wants us to stay in Iraq forever.

The bottom line: You may have won some legislative battles for your hero-king, but you’ve lost the electoral war.
