Matt Taibbi has the distinction of sitting in the chair once occupied by Hunter S. Thompson and P. J. O'Rourke at Rolling Stone Magazine. As contributing editor, Matt continues their tradition of irreverent political commentary and biting humor - with a good measure of street reporting thrown in.
In his new book, The Great Derangement, Matt chronicles his cross-country travels, immersing himself into four subcultures – the Military, Congress, conspiracy theorists, and extreme religion. Matt says that, with distrust of the government at new heights, and cynicism about the media and their role even higher, the country is “flipping out.”
I interviewed Matt in the GRITtv studio today.

So, we meet again, Laura!
Aloha, Laura!
here’s the thing about that statement;
those are exactly the results the republican party are looking for
remember Reagan when he said he was frightened by “I’m from the government and I’m here to help”?
that was the marker, from there forward they were going to dismantle our government, if it is a successful program they will undermine that program, they will undermine it’s effectiveness and they will give those assets to the wealthiest people on the planet
they will undermine our infrastructure, they will give those assets to their “pals” and then those very same “pals” will get the contracts to run the services they themselves destroyed
so ” with distrust of the government at new heights” they can say they achieved their goal
Damn, I feel old now.
Fabulous interview, Laura! GRITtv is an incredible new asset for progressive communicating.
Laura this Internet TV is so cool. You and TPM are pioneers and I think this is one way we are going to get the to the truth. Cheers to Matt Taibbi, he is smart, articulate and willing to do the work. You both have my respect.
Anyone know if there’s been any light shed on the descrepency between what Dana Peroxide said about who Clusterfuck was talking about in Israel (”He was NOT talking about OBAMA”)
and THIS from CNN?
The president did not name Sen. Barack Obama or any other Democrat, but White House aides privately acknowledged to CNN that the remarks were aimed at the presidential candidate and others in his party.
Sounds as if the White House is suffering from multiple personality disorder..
I love this GritTV thingy!!!
First of all, I want to say that people who question the events of 9/11 are not wackos. There is tons of evidence that people refuse to look at for fear of being branded a wacko. I was disappointed at Matt’s take on that…putting 9/11 Truth in the same vein as Hagee types…Not.
Secondly, I wish Hagee and his ilk would just get raptured and be done with it. I would love to wake up one morning and realize that the armageddonists got their wish and are gone. /s

can someone please explain to me what in the hell happened
with the House voting against War Funding today
thought they were gonna pass this. seriously, I has confusion
At 8pm tonight we’ll have the rest of the show, starting with a devastating, gorgeous doc “IRAQ PAPER SCISSORS” by Sara Nesson. We dig into the idea of Supporting The Troops that is bandied about so much, with former NJ National Guard member Margaret Stevens, former Staff Sargent Jesse Hamilton - who now works with Iraq Veterans Against the War - and Matt Smucker, a national field organizer with pacifist group the War Resisters League.
I work on GritTV so I’m undoubtedly biased, but today we are bringing you something very special.
Thanks for all the feedback!
I heard on the radio on the way home today that the US House of Reps has passed a bill defunding the Iraq occupation after the republics started playing their games. Love it!
Okay, gotta go to a meeting of the Obama delegates now. Have a good night everyone! ;-)
It appears the Democrats called the bluff of the republics or something like that:

;-)
I like the term “Extreme Religion”
I presume it means religion practiced on motorcyles going 100 mph and doin loop the loops at an eleveation of 200 feet?
Where do we go to watch it or listen to it?
New Ms Hamsher post upstairs
I imagine it will be right here on FDL as well as on Free speech TV (via Dish Network - do not know the channel).
We are being blessed with the GritTV shows until they get their own corner of the Lake next week sometime.
Great. I have FSTV. It is channel 9415 on DishTV.
Did I seriously hear Bernie Sanders referred to as a progressive Democrat? I thought he was an independent or a self-proclaimed Socialist. No?
Thanks for the warm welcome.
: )
We’ll post the first 10 mins or so of the show here tonight at 8p Eastern, with a link to the full linear 58:00, in Flash or Quicktime (some people have problems with the Flash files)
FreeSpeechTV is on Dish, as above, and on college and public access stations - it kinda depends on where you live. They have the show in rotation, a few times a day. http://www.freespeech.org/schedule/
I really love the way you’ve put this show together. The subdued lighting and triangular desk create the perfect set for Laura to do her interviews. I have a really good feeling about this show. Man, just look at the guests who were on this week! You’ve shared more information in 4 nights than the corporate M$M has done this month. Be proud of a job well done!
