I think 2008 is going to be a fabulous year for the Republican Party. -- The Commander Guy, 3/13/08
That giant sucking sound you heard last night was the GOP getting punked -- again -- in the reddest of the red:
In a major blow to national Republicans, a Mississippi congressional seat that once voted for President Bush by a twenty-five point margin elected a Democrat on Tuesday. Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers beat out Republican candidate Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, by a 54%-46% margin, a spread that several Republican strategists on Capitol Hill characterized as a startling wake-up call for a party in dire straits.
I guess that whole getting kicked out of both houses, a bunch of state legislatures and governors' mansions in 2006 wasn't enough of a wake-up call for these geniuses. But what's so awesome about this is that the wingnuts are still -- still! -- completely in denial about why they're losing.
"Tonight's election highlights two significant challenges Republicans must overcome this November," [NRCC Chairman Tom] Cole said. "First, Republicans must be prepared to campaign against Democrat challengers who are running as conservatives, even as they try to join a liberal Democrat majority."
Added Powertools,
But my takeaway is that the Republican brand is in such bad shape that the Dems can win virtually anywhere if they nominate a candidate whose position on key issues is, or can be made to seem, close to that of the Republican.
No, morons. Republicans aren't losing to Democrats because Democrats are cleverly disguising themselves as Republicans. Republicans are losing to Democrats because people hate Bush, hate the war, hate the economy, can't afford health care, can't afford gas, and hate Bush. In other words, they are thoroughly rejecting all of the Republican positions on key issues.
So even though it's obvious to anyone with half a brain, the GOP will not be able to win in November by screaming "librul librul librul terra terra Wright [cough! black! cough!] Wright." But they still don't know it.
Priceless.

A “startling wake-up call”? How can you wake a Party that suffers from narcolepsy?
Thanks BT.
You know, it was interesting on Saturday (and those of you who read my comments on Saturday, forgive the repetition, please.)
I had a Republican candidate for Larry Craig’s Senate seat knock on my door. The primary is the end of this month, and there are a whole slew of Republicans competing for that seat. Idaho being Idaho, most consider the primary to be the real race, because they don’t see that seat going Democratic in November (but I believe in you Larry LaRocco!)
I was amazed that this guy Syme was canvassing. I was even more amazed that he was going door to door in my neighborhood, which is one of the very few in Idaho that has all Democratic representation in the state senate and house. I’ve had candidates for state office knock on my door, but never someone running for the national seats.
An Iraqui vet, he seemed very nice, and very sincere, and I wish I’d had more time to talk to him.
One of the things that he stressed to me was the importance of constituent outreach, really responding to his voters, and having grassroots support. I’ve got to be honest, there is a part of me considering voting in the R primary so I can vote for him, because if that seat does go Republican, I’d rather have this guy then the establishment favored frontrunner.
I tell this story because I don’t think we can become complacent. There are some smart people on the Republican side, and they aren’t all tied to the “old” way of doing things. They see what can happen, and some of them are going to tap into this new grassroots interest. They can see 1.5 million small doners to the Obama campaign, and however many Clinton have, and they won’t always ignore it.
that’s necrophilia, screwing a brain dead public
Add me to your list on FB and I’ll fill you in on Yang. It ain’t good.
best comment seen over at DKos:
“fifty state strategy? suck on this, DLC!”
I can relate to what you are saying, however, I have to add a note of caution: once this smart young man would enter the halls of Congress there will be tremendous pressure brought to bear down on him to fall in line with TPTB.
I don’t think anyone is suggesting we become complacent. But the Bush dead-enders in the GOP aren’t going anywhere, and I it’s going to take 2-3 consecutive national ass-kickings to really force them to start over.
The fact that they’re still surprised — almost 2 years after 2006 — is telling you all you need to know.
lmao!
The really scary funny part is that Cheney (of all effing people) went down to MS in the same style as he visits the Senate and the Middle East to tell people how to vote. I’m so glad they flipped him the bird. There is some satisfaction in that, fer sure.
Eli’s was funny last night.
Oh, please don’t misunderstand. A vote for him in the primary does NOT equal a vote for him in the general. LaRocco has my money - you think he doesn’t have my vote?
I’m sure that he’d fall very much in line, and do everything that Crapo, the suddenly-senior-Senator told him to do, and that’s pretty much a straight line from McConnell.
Have you all seen the winning Moveon ad for Obama? It’s very good. Nothing says the Republican brand is dead more than a lifelong republican and vet saying he’s voting for Obama.
Opps, that HE being the Republican, whoever he is, and not Larry LaRocco. Preview is my friend, if I’ll use it.
Oh, let the morons keep on thinking that way. Makes it easier to beat them at the polls.
With each passing day, this particular pessimist (moi) becomes a little bit more hopeful. Logic tells one that all of these setbacks for the Republic party are to have been expected. Past experience tells a different story. We must push on, fight back wherever necessary, and screw the bastards wherever we can.
Gotcha. I could tell you weren’t really going to go red from your original comment. phew!
oh
wait
let me get this right;
THAT’S a wake up call?
the fact that their “permanent majority” was trashed in one election cycle, that WASN’T a wake up call?
the fact that this presidet enjoys the most vile hatred in the history of presidents and they continue to toe his sad ass lame duck propaganda, THAT’S not a wake up call?
the fact that the country is in ruins, the infrastructure destroyed, the majority of americans borrowing more then they earn, making less real dollars then ever, without retirement programs or savings account, without health care and the funds to send their kids to college
none of THAT is a wake up call?
these idiots continue to listen to rove as if he hasn’t proved himself to be an inept moron, the continue to follow the bush lead as if he isn’t the most corrupt inept president in the history of this country
if they want to reclaim their party and have any hope of winning elections they better start talking about impeachment and pronto
and maybe we can give them a little nudge, maybe if we make it known the reason they lose election after election is because their constituents want this president impeached
yes, even the republicans want him impeached, it’s just the wing nuts that think that would be a bad thing for their party
the best thing the republicans did for their party was to be the politicians responsible for nixon’s resignation
todays republicans can do the same for their party, they can march into his office and tell him;
“you have got to get out of office, if you do not we will impeach your sorry ass in a summary trial that will last all of one day, we won’t even need to show evidence, we will use “national security” as our excuse and send your but to the hague”
so…I am fantasizing but it’s fun to do when we get news like we got today
now we have to march into childers office and tell him straight up;
“we have no use for you if you vote with the republicans on progressive issues, we have no use for you at all and you better get that straight out, we have a lot of damage to undo and if you want our support next election you better help us undo this damage”
man I am stoked
Dems, be careful who you get in bed with…
… the voters might not like it!
if they are smart then they wouldn’t be in the party that wants to redistribute middle class wealth to the wealthy, and they don’t want to give our childrens assets in infrastructure to the wealthy either
that means they are not republican, the two are mutually exclusive
I think that it is time we support Bob Barr’s run as the Libertarian candidate. Since it is not illegal for sane people to assist their chosen candidate in winning, it is time to look at things as Rushing Limppaw might for the sake of reality in an election context that will certainly defy it.
Bob will bring what McSame can’t. Openly perverted hatred of public programs. This will bleed a few repugnants. The end of drug laws involving punishment. This will bring a few more people from the party that do not profit from organized crime, and are sorry their party works with the various mafia’s so closely. And best of all, taxes. Bob would want to eliminate taxes, the EPA, you know, any type of regulation on the tiny little government he would try to create by firing half the employees. This is going to bring yet another wing of the repugnants right into line.
Do you think McSame is on the phone offering the VP to Barr now, or perhaps offering to personally take care of his priapism requirements? Maybe offering him a chance to give it to Borat in the netherlands?
Please, support Bob Barr for his bid to become popular again. He wants another film role, and he needs your hatred to win in November.
Perris! agree that dems need to corner childers asap.
goopers only look to bush/cheney for wake up calls, not mere voters. and they see bush has a “spring in his step” so it’s all hunkydorey.
Well said Blue Texan! When we turn Texas CD-21 Blue and rid ourselves of Lamar Smith, then I will be happy. Not until! Perhaps we can get some semblance of fair districting at the next census-nah, probably not. These challenger impervious, Tom Delay special,
Illegal contributionfree speech aided, Democrats need not apply , Supreme Court approved Districts tend to be almost insurmountable obstacles for even the best candidates to overcome. We couldn’t even get a credible individual to run in 21 this time.what…no nookie pics?
you needed a spew warning for: “Openly perverted hatred of public programs.”
My koolaid drinker is not smart but pretends he is and clings to the old GOP way of thinking, not realizing that he has been conned to the Nth degree.
His sole political philosophy is “Don’t tax me, bro!”
He does not realize all his money is going to the uberwealthy. He likes to think he belongs to that country club but again in republican land, reality is optional.
Doggett is my guy, thanks to redistricting. Lamar Smith is exactly the kind of painfully mediocre, not-very-bright Republican (see Cornyn, John) that wouldn’t win anywhere else in the country but Texas.
He has a spring in his step because he’s making an exit that doesn’t involve going to jail.
Didn’t want to put you off your sexual desires.
Oh is that what that giant sucking sound is?
the kind of painfully mediocre, not-very-bright Republican (see Cornyn, John)
methinks you’re too generous in your assessment of Senator Boxturtle
Now if we can just figure why Democrats have cleverly disguising themselves as Republicans for the last two years…
For once I agree with McCain. his assessment of cornyn is that he’s an effing assh*le!
“I think 2008 is going to be a fabulous year for the Republican Party. — The Commander Guy, 3/13/08″
So do I. Hubris is such a bitch.
My favorite Boxturtle moment was when he kept calling Alito “Scalito” by accident during the confirmation hearings.
This could be the comment of the day!!
:P
Yes.
Some don’t see it as redistributing middle class wealth to the wealthy - some see it as redistributing THEIR wealth to lazy people who don’t want to work (I am NOT advocating this postion) or they see their money being wasted and they’ve been told for years that government is bad and their taxes are wasted. Until that becomes real for them, because they need the social safety net, it’s hard for them to see it otherwise.
Do they still align with the NeoConservative Republican party of today? No. But they have that tribal identity, and it’s hard for them to break it. Especially if you throw guns into the mix, and remember, there is a strong libertarian streak in the West that has aligned more with Republicans than Democrats in the past.
Toxic Bush and Cheney aside, the entire country isn’t ready to embrace the Democratic party, and we need to continue to make our argument about why we offer better solutions.
You’ve got to read the comments from this Redstate post from last night:
They see the writing on the wall. Apparently its all Bush’s fault. I’m starting to think that BDS thing Malkin’s always ranting about must be contagious.
After this comment:
“I said earlier that I’m buying Soap for Everyone…..Please dont Bail out…just vote and grab a fresh bar of Manpope soap”
Someone responded:
“Just don’t put it on a rope Some deeply depressed Republicans might get ideas.”
Liebombman finds the idea of bombing Iran appealing on Bill Bennett’s Show.
We’ve got a little sidebar cleanup to take care of, too.
More and better Democrats.
Unfortunately, I have to call the execrable Lamar my “representative” with all of his lies and disingeneousness. I received a “constituent newsletter” from hom a few days ago that was flat pathetic with all the lies and mis-direction it contained.
Oh, I live for the day he is a never-read-footnote in history books.
I’m just gonna say, after the gains in November, they better kick Mr. “CT for ME” to the curb.
I have a bunch of these friends too
I just tell them;
‘I AGREE’, yet raising taxes is ALL the republicans do, then they make believe they lowered taxes
they make it so corporations don’t have to pay for the issues they cause, they say “if you dump crap in our kids water and toxic waste in their air you don’t have to pay to clean that up”
and they call THAT a tax reduction
then they get US to pay for the gifts they just gave their wealthy pals by raising OUR taxes”
and I continue;
“for instance, you’ve been led to believe that reagan some how lowered taxes when in FACT he RAISED taxes MORE then any peacetime president before him
your “liberlal media” has convinced you that reagans actions were exactly oposite his actual performance
dosido, I just punish them with facts after agreeing with their desires and bing, a republican that starts to think twice about what is in that kool aid
What seems odd to me is that Mississippi is, I thought, the poorest state in the Union. You’d think they’d figure out the Rethugs are not doing well by them. You’d think they’d have become Dems before now.
I have great success debating republicans, this is because what they really want is exactly what the democrats do
what they really want is exactly what the republicans want to abolish
it’s simple to point this out as well;
they want the party that supports our armed forces, that is not the repukes it’s the dems, they want a party that has fiscal responsibiliy that is not the repukes it’s the dems, a party that has national secuirty as it’s top priority that is CERTAINLY not the repukes it’s the dems
they want a strong middle class, that’s the dems, they want religious freedom that’s the dems
however the media has them convinced to the reverse of the record
I act as appaled with their fears as they are and then I point out that THAT is why I am a democrat and I give them all the proof they need that they’ve been lied to by a party that has been highjacked
it’s tons of fun
yes, I suffer from the same Lamar problem. Ironically I am so close to Ciro Rodriguez’s district,(my back yard borders his district) that I get his town hall meeting calls.
good stuff. my KD (aforementioned koolaid drinker) also whines about how govt screws small business. Jeez! so why do you vote pro corporation! ack!
Yes, it’s tribal. KD is an unconfessed bigot but his biggest prejudice is if someone is a dem. if you are of color but vote R then you might be OK.
This is what i grew up with and why FDL is so very important to me. thanks for listening!
LOL!!
Like your use of quotation marks. I do same for “president”.
It’s not really all that odd. The right has used the social conservatism thing for year to get people to vote against their own best interests.

Citizen oldtree and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“I think it is time we support Bob Barr’s run as the Libertarian candidate.”
With the caution of “let’s be careful here”, I endorse the idea for this November because it may jest peel away the 17-25% real Nazis in a couple of the states of the “Old Confederacy” and with a record turnout of Blacks and those often maligned “hard working whites” Obama could capture Georgia (Barr’s home state) and North Carolina and maybe even Mississippi. The risk, however, is that Barr and the Libertarians would solidify access to federal matchin’ funds for the party and in combination with Ron Paul’s millions garnered in the Republican Primary, we could be lookin at an out of the closet fascist party with visibility and legitimacy. I think, in the long run, that’s what it’s gunna take to expose the fascist elements in our politics and further isolate and identify the corporate money that has created the mess we’re in now.
So… “Go Bob Barr…bring ‘em all outta the closet!!”
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THIS BATTLE IS BIGGER’N THE PRESIDENCY!!
Hiya Norske,
I saw your reply to my Late Nite fears just this a.m. It made sense and thanks!
OT - HJC hearing is now beginning.
and several others are scheduled if this one doesn’t appeal. for example:
Ann, when gas hits 4 bucks a gallon, and you can’t afford to get a yearly checkup for your kids because you don’t have any insurance, and animal feed is so high that you are selling your pet horses for glue or turning them out into the wilderness, the ideas of two guys getting married doesn’t seem like your most pressing problem anymore.
The Repubs have ground the lower middle class and the working poor into the ground these last seven years and now they know it.
Bill Clinton’s time in office is looking better and better to them.
Oldtree and Norske
As amusing as an FDL operation chaos might be, I must add that we be careful what we wish for. It might make HRC look progressive by comparison.
Back atcha Citizen dosido…let’s stay on the field here and keep the ball in play, so ta speak. We’re in new territory and we gotta learn how ta work a candidate that owes us somethin’. New politics is possible but only if we take care of the old shit.
most grateful, selise, for the heads-up
*passing over the chocolate-chocolate chip cookies*
I’m still quivering with interest as to what exactly they mean by ‘election contingency plans’. Just in case…what?
Selise,
this is a big question and I don’t mean it as snark really. If you don’t have a ready answer, that’s OK.
But here goes: what results have any of these hearings brought, in your opinion? Has anyone written anything about it that you know of? just asking.
one of my special powers is bringing conversations to a dead halt…

Citizen dosido:
“It might make HRC look progressive by comparison.”
Good thought but by exposin’ the fascist elements under a recognizable brand, “she who should forever remain nameless” would hafta overtly court those fascists and not be able to run under the cover of “those hard working white” voters or “John McCain is certainly qualified” or “my friend Joe Lieberman”. She’d actually be triangulated right outta the Democratic Party (what a thought, huh?).
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, AND REMEMBER THERE ARE MORE OF US THAN THERE ARE OF THEM!!
lol :)
did you see the SNL HRC skit? wow.
uh, I know its unstylish to mention such things, but Childers’ had to not merely distance himself from Obama, he had to treat Obama as if “our presumptuous nominee” had a particularly virulent and contagious form of leprosy.
When Democratic congressional candidates have to treat the party’s standard-bearer in that fashion, the party has a huge problem. The “GOP brand” may be in the crapper, but the “McCain brand” isn’t… and if Childers is any indication, the “Obama brand” is just as toxic as the GOP brand in lots of places….
Exactly, I find all this trumpet blowing about the Dem ‘Wave’ ridiculous and stupid. Republicans are very good at electioneering. They have the mighty megaphone of the MSM on their side as witness the MSM’s blatant attempts to make Barry the nominee.
And do not for a minute think that McSame will run a dumb campaign. He’s already adopted Global Warming as his issue. Next up the ‘Do-Nothing Dem Congress’ where McSame blames the Dems for…
Whatever he wants.
And guess what?
It will all stick. Because they have not done what they promised. And never mind the excuses about ReThug ‘obstructionism’ the GE will not be an environment where logic will be present.
If we run Barry….McSame will murder him. If we run The Hill we’ve got a fighting chance but….
STFU! with the ‘We are gonna swamp ‘em….’ that could have been true without Barry’s divisive attempt to wreck the party.
excellent question. in my opinion…
1. elliott has the most awesome cookies and i will do just about anything to get some.
2. here is something senator reid said when he was here this weekend and my response:
if our dems in congress were doing their job - imo, it wouldn’t be so critical that we watch them. but they’re not, so if we want accountability it’s up to us to provide the oversight.
here’s what i have on the webpage i post the hearing info on:
No, do ya have a limk ta the SNL skit?
don’t know. i’m watching the HJC.
The Repub candidate against Childers ran ads tying him to Obama and the people in Mississippi thought it was hilarious. They said that Obama had probably never even heard of Childers. And the article that you highlighted did NOT show that Childers was running from Obama - he mainly said he didn’t know him. No there there.
Great post, BT!
I am especially gratified by this win for the Good Guys, given that I used to live in Mississippi and have a degree from MSU (Motto: Where the cows party hearty!) I am glad to see a majority of the people in a state in the deep south are finally seeing through all the muck that has been thrown in their eyes and, perhaps, how they have been manipulated for years by the Republican party.
wow! excellent answer selise!
It would take only one real or faked terrist attack in October to give this back to the loathsome Republicans. Sorry, I don’t have that much faith in the sheep in the fearmongers’ pastures. I haven’t even heard any pushback from Reid or Biden in reply to all the recent Iran
talkpropaganda. Didn’t one of them say that an Iran strike without Congressional pre-approval would be grounds for impeachment? Have you heard any talk of that recently? Here you go. enjoy.
Amy Poehler
you like elliot’s cookies too?
I wouldn’t”t put it past this bunch to try to pull a false flag operation. It’s not as if it hasn’t been considered before.

Citizen lukasiak:
“…if Childers is any indication, the “Obama brand” is just as toxic as the GOP brand in lots of places…”
Obviously NOT if those racist wingnuts voted for the Dems in spite of Obama…but your caution about takin’ the Mississippi results too far in our direction is well placed. What these results do mean, however, is that somethin’ is happenin’ to the political molecules in the South and the circumstances of people’s lives are crashin’ headlong into the ideological arguments used to separate voters from their self interest.
KEEP THE FAITH AND KEEP THINKIN’…”SOMETHIN IS HAPPENIN’ HERE…WHAT IT IS AIN’T EXACTLY CLEAR…”
dunno! never got any :’(
Wow Selise! Talkin’ truth to power, dayam!
uh, did he reply to that?
It’s like saying, I’m busting my hump working three jobs to pay for this illegal war and you give me hearings?! where’s the beef?
Actually my nuanced observation is that the hearings are sometimes covered in the news and the DOJ scandal is indeed publicly acknowledged as a scandal in some sort of ritualistic way and it stays in the minds of voters. maybe. a little. and we vote the bastards out. no incumbents, frikkin’ freeloaders.
*handing tw3k his own personal plate of chocolate-chocolate chip cookies*

y ty elliott :D
yes, selise, the best!
Here is what Childers said in the ad…
My family has heard the lies and attacks linking me to politicians I don’t know and have never met.
he didn’t “mainly say he didn’t know him”. He described linking Obama to him as a “lie” and an “attack.”
Now, I don’t know about you, but when saying that your opponent was endorsed by the Democratic Party’s presumptuous frontrunner becomes an “attack”, there is a problem. The question isn’t whether there is a problem, its only how widespread and serious the problem is/will become for the party and its congressional candidates in November if Obama is the Democratic nominee.
who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
Norske
If I may I would like to suggest one thing that is happening. Dean’s 50 state plan. The Democratic Party, for reasons that I disagree with, has for years treated the south as if ALL people there are racists and beneath even dealing with. Southerners do not like to be looked down on and began to vote Republican - although most of them cannot even tell you what the Repubs stand for. Along comes Dean and pays attention - even in the south. And look what’s happening.
and on top of alllll this, they’re STILL throwing a snit on the Senate floor today, voting against beneficial changes for police and fire fighters!
how stupid does it get?
IDJITS!!!!!
cute pic. but I don’t think bush gives a rats furry behind about his republican colleagues. they are just pawns in his game.
I especially loved the detachable post card and those “questions” he asked us in that “newsletter.”
Three questions with at least six lies and/or half-truths.
I just added you to my list on FB.
Bless yer pure heart, Citizen dosido, thanx for the link…now I ken sleep soundly fer a couple of hours before I hafta get up and do it all over again.
oh, I don’t know who would take any cookies without asking…and I haven’t sent any emails in seven years…and I listen to the generals. she said while wiping her smirky little mouth.
hahahahaha
but maybe an aide read it. and that alone, imo, would be a very big deal.
yeah, he hasn’t much use for them anymore, does he?
Glad you liked it.

it sure would be a big deal. and I hope that Reid gets it through his head that there is a great deal of voter anger and it isn’t all pointed at the GOP. sorry I missed that book salon!
