All the cable networks -- CNN, MSNBC, and FOX -- just called the WV primary for Hillary Clinton. While this falls under the heading of "didn't we expect this to happen?", the big question of the evening will be "by how much?" Because that will answer the division of the 28 pledged delegates up for grabs tonight.
MSNBC is predicting a 2 to 1 split -- meaning Clinton would get 19-ish delegates and Obama would get 9-ish, give or take while we wait for real, honest-to-god results that aren't just based on exit polls. And Chuck Todd says that Obama only has to get 23 percent in either KY or OR to clinch the delegate requirement -- he says that Clinton would have to pull off a close to 91% victory margin in every remaining state in order to win, which is most likely impossible.
The answer to the even bigger question? She likes butter pecan and espresso oreo ice cream. (You have to love local coverage, don't you?)
Polls closed here in WV at 7:30 pm ET, so it will be a little while before all the ballots are tallied in all the counties. A few areas of the state experienced some power issues due to a large amount of rain and some windstorms over the last few days causing outages and flooding -- but generators were brought in and as far as I've been able to ascertain today everything went smoothly with very few hiccups statewide. While we're waiting for solid numbers not just based on exit polls and early voting ballot counts, here's a funky story about the CNN election central bus.
And rwcole found some exit poll data as well. Intriguing stuff.
However, it looks like WV Democratic party leadership is already looking past their commitments to Sen. Clinton. If Gov. Manchin's invitation to Sen. Obama to attend a long-planned Clinton rally in heavily Clinton-voting territory isn't a huge signal, I don't know what is. (Of course, knowing our Governor, it could also be a signal that he's going courting for a Cabinet nod...but maybe that's just me.) Hell, Carville's already started talking party unity and writing out a check for the Obama campaign...way to piddle on the Clinton parade today, James.
Meanwhile, it's on to the next set of primaries. And the continuing saga of questions raised by anonymous e-mail spammers taken seriously by uncritical readers. The stupid...it burns.

Leisure Guy!
We all did see that Chuck Hagee “apologized” today, right?
McSame was, like, “Yawn”
Heard on Nice Polite Republicans
Woo, what a great suggestion for McCain’s Press Secretary!
I like that the gov even seems to be down with moving on to the GE. Nevertheless, I congratulate the senator on her win.
KO has no business anchoring election coverage. It is blushingly bad.
How’s the kitten doing?
he renounce his renouncement?
Flip flopper
She wasn’t taking the bottle well so I switched over to a medicine drop (the one with the plunger) and she ate almost 1/2 TBSP at one feeding. She is just so tiny. She squirms around soo much and is very active. At the moment, she is nesteled in a towel inside my swetsuit jacket (up against my tummy). *sigh*
he un-renounced the Catholic Church (he was ready to make nice) — no way they’re getting their Apocalypse with a Dem in the White House.
Sounds like you found the magic feeding trick. You’re now teetering on the brink of falling hopelessly, completely in love with a tiny fur person.
nestled …sweatsuit
What’s the consensus? Will McThuselah take 80% of the vote today?
Christy: a long grueling day, one of many.
You doin’ o.k.? No need to answer now. We’ll catch up to succeeding threads in the next few days.
You’re the best, dear lady.
she fits in my hand and I’m trying not to get too attached (and failing miserably) because she is still very much vunerable
Yeah. Right. Don’t fall in love.
I’ve heard that one before.
It doesn’t work that way.
Love is not a choice.
Sorta like a headache….it hits you or not.
OMG — Matthews and Olberman are openly mocking Terry McCauliffe’s “best speech in the history of speechmaking” overreach. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them tag team like that on him. And I would not imagine that Terry’s ego will appreciate it, either…
KO kicking the holy livin shit out of Hillary and then scrapin up the goo and kickin it some more..
Unseemly in my opinion.
Obama’s won this thing- wouldn’t hurt him to be a tad gracious.
Uh, that would be John Hagee I think.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Have you met our new puppy, Lucky?
Hey Wobbly. Bless your bleeding-liberal heart!
We, actually our gentle kitty, discovered an orphaned flying squirrel 4 wks old, after a storm in our woods. We kept him warm & did a lot of what you must be doing for the kitten now, and he ended up living with us 9 yrs as one of the family ;->. Heck, he attended soccer games and school board meetings in my pocket, and even became a “secret” school mascot during hard times, beloved by all who knew him.
I hope the best for your little one. They’re so little and so fragile. You’re very special even to try to raise the little feller. Says a lot about you…
((((Wobblybits))))
Agreed. But I think they were kicking Terry McAulliffe and not Hillary with that last bit…
Uhhh…what’s up with this?
http://abcnews.go.com/politics.....38;ref=ipb
They have Huckabee as projected winner in WV. Caan’t find any other references to this anywhere…just BIG CLINTON WIN everywhere.
If McKeating loses WV, seems like a huge story to me…
Doing well. We got take-out rotisserie chicken and a pre-made Greek salad, so that dinner would be easy for momma this evening. So I’m propped up in a chair with my feet up, balancing my laptop and a salad at the moment.
Soon to switch over to popcorn, I’m sure…
The second part of the GOP primary was today. Didn’t realize they’d called that yet — thanks — will add that to the top.
you are absolutely right. Even our pup has warmed up to the lil bundle. But is looks as though snuggled between my jacket and my tummy is her favorite spot. She protests for a second and then drops off to sleep
Oh, nope — that’s still from the February GOP primary. I thought they had a second bounce on the GOP primary, but I guess not…
Yeah- but it’s been goin on like this with him for months- doesn’t sit well with me- and I’m not even a Hillary supporter.
LOL it seems that lucky has a cosmic twin in our lil kitty. Found her yesterday (eyes not yet opened) and she is adorable and very vocal
Still a little suspicious to me. Could McKeating really finish a distant 3rd place as this says?!?
Any idea when we might start getting actual returns to support the declaration of a winner???
He did. Yep. There was some sort of backroom deal between McCain and Huckabee — and Willard screamed bloody murder about it at the time. I’ll see if I can find a link on it…
I do believe you are correct, most humble apologies to Chucks everywhere.
Chuck Chuck Bo Buck
Bonana Nana…
John John Bo Bohn
Bonana Nana…
I like Chuck better
awww widdle squirrel. I am a sucker for kids and animals and baby animals (forget about it). thanks for the warm words. I just want her to continue to eat and gain some weight. I should take her to the vet I suppose but what is the vet going to do that I’m not currently doing?
Olbamaermann has been so unprofessional and outrageously in the tank for Obama and nasty to Clinton for such a long time that I literally have not been able to watch him for quite a while. And I thought the world of him before. MSNBC as a whole has done the same thing; however, it just seems worse and more painful because it is Olbermann. I really am not that attached to one candidate or the other, but have been furious at the coverage.
Bonana Fana
more wine, please
Bonkers — Here it is — from Jane the night of the WV primary for the GOP back in February.
707!
He has been bad about it this evening. I tend to switch around to various channels to see who I want to listen to — I like Chuck Todd’s analysis on number crunching, so I’ve been hovering on MSNBC waiting for more from him. I thought maybe he and Matthews were just doing some sort of over-the-top bit this evening, being burned out from all the primaries or something. Sad to hear it’s been a constant. (This is what happens when you have a 5 year old and crash out early half the time, I suppose…)
Yikes. It must be a personal thing, or somethin…and for wahtever reason he has, it’s getting on my already very frayed nevers. and I’m ready to switch back to CNN.
His every breath is so tweaked.
wobbly–what are you feeding her and how often?
cnn balanced it out by having been very pro-hillary. crashing out early saved you not only precious time never to be recovered but also your sanity
Carville should stfu now and forever.
Tired of hearing, and reading, his crap.
I’m tired of looking at that oh-so-sour puss of his.
Hell, this is tame compared to other election nights.
Even though I generally agree with KO, I condemn his total disregard of journalistic standards. To do otherwise is to allow the ends to triumph over the means. In terms of the future of journalism what could be more frightening?
What happened today doesn’t matter. Hilary will NEVER be qualified until she stands before a mic and says, “I really screwed up for voting to authorize, it was a horrible, stupid mistake, and I’m really sorry. If you give me a chance, I PROMISE, I’ll never EVER do that again.”
Of course pigs do not fly so I don’t expect any such speech. But it would be the one thing she could do to stave off the waves of nausea if I were forced to vote with her on the ticket in the general election.
Herd on, Nice Polite Republicans.
I knew there was a good reason I usually go to bed early. *g*
Kind of embarrassing for MSNBC to Hucklebee have as a commentator about the Democratic primary if he’s won the GOP primary, don’t you think?
And congratulations to Senator Clinton. Well-played.
bonger at banana fana—
at my old house across the state, i had a neighbor named chuck, great guy, and every single time my best friend came over and he was outside, she couldn’t help herself, bo chuck, chuuuuuck…..she would sing and giggle…..and she’s not a giggler…….told her to ’stop it’. said she couldn’t help it…..all she could think of when she saw him, the name game.
heh.
timmah russert just delivered hillary’s message - if her debt is not paid off before august, she eats the $20mil loss - all except $250K.
Bart works, too
Worst thing is that he has damaged his own credibility- and his is a voice too valuable to discount.
Thanks. On kid duty at the moment and getting distracted a lot. Got a little excited there…
Yes, but what’s the margin of error? :)
she gets kitten formula every three hours
Here’s some poll info from one of the local papers — but I think it’s an AP report:
A poll taken over the weekend by Suffolk University found Clinton leading Obama among likely Democratic voters 60 percent to 24 percent.
The poll also showed that 40 percent of voters plan to vote for the eventual Democratic nominee regardless of who it is, while 23 percent said they’d consider voting for Republican John McCain if their preferred candidate doesn’t win.
More like her epitaph.
Oh Bless You Hon for quick answer. We share autoimmune-type problem - tho mine is now held at bay and expected to stay that way. I can’t help worrying about you. Please let Mr. Redd pamper you. The hard work is still ahead, as I’m sure you are aware.
We hope Peanut enjoyed her voting experience. She WILL remember. Have no doubt. Our grownup “kids” apparently noticed their parents’ activism, and they not only never neglect to vote, but they energize & educate their buddies to do likewise, sometimes with research from yours truly.
Thank you!
I feel good vibes from this election year, yet there is so-o-o much picking-up to do after the current gang is booted out… It’ll take all of us. Just keep passing the word and enabling us, whether we be fuzzy-chinned or grizzled. I truly think, at least in our neck of the woods, progressive will win the day and future. It’s happening before my eyes in OH. Yes, including some WV, coal-miners’-kids, “imports” from some beautiful place southeast of us. We salute you.
I just really hate “horse race” type coverage, so I tend to avoid it. Am only watching it this evening because it’s for my primary and I wanted to see how they broke things down.
But, I swear, if I hear what an uneducated rube state I live in one more time, I’m going to lose it. *g*
I’m gonna take a little time off coming up soon, and recharge. I’ve been having a huge flare issue all winter and spring, for no reason that I can ascertain, but I do try and take good care of myself, get extra rest and eat more healthfully as often as I can.
Have been on a fresh strawberry kick lately. *g*
wobbly at 55–good….who told you 3 hours? does she seem sated with that? trying to remember, thought it was more often than that if their eyes are still closed….don’t have it written down anywhere, been a long time……..baby birds are more often, raised more of them……
bonger, yep, that’s a good one, and my name (don’t say it here please) although not dirty, she used to say that was a fun one….
(((wobblybits)))
(((baby tiger)))
All this discussion on MSNBC of the potentially disaffected Democrats makes me really suspicious about why no network analyzed the GOPs who came out in North Carolina and Pennsylvania last week to vote against St McCain.
Why didn’t we hear any analysis of whether they would vote for the Democrat? Or whether they would stay home? Did Noron not ask the exit pollers to get these answers, or were the answers not palatable for the teevee audience?
There are more unhappy GOPs than there are unhappy Democrats. Bet on it.
There’s a substantial number of Hillary’s “white, working” voters in PA, IN, OH. But I don’t recall any network ever using “college-educated” as a metric in their coverage, until tonight.
Have I missed something?
Come sit by me, sweety, and bring your tiara and feather boa. Around here, you’ll need it! *g*
50 states and for every state at least one stereotype
Have you contemplated setting up a sort of drink bottle like you use in a hamster cage? I saw someone raise a baby pig like that when I was younger…but I do not know if it would work for a kitty that tiny. You may be using the eye dropper for a while.
Rachel wasshername is annoying for some of the same reasons- but she has no reason to try to appear to be objective.
I’d be there in a heartbeat for more shopping and another lovely meal at the beach. That was one fun day. :)
a friend from germany (who fosters cats) told me every 2-3 hours. when she is hungry, she yowls. she seems satisfied and is taking more food everytime i feed her.
Michelle wassername is a gooper heading up one of the dumbshit phoney gooper front organizations- but she does a pretty good job of speaking somewhat objectively.
The mockery on msnbc is simply unbelievable. They are actually laughing out loud. This is a serious news organization?
((SD)) she is asleep at the moment but it will soon be time to eat again
wobblybits, your vet might be able to find you a wet-nurse cat, would be the best for the kitteh imo.
Christy, don’t know if you have any food allergies as well but a scrumptious salad:
Fresh spinach leaves, some sliced strawberries, cantaloupe chunks and a couple of slices of fresh onion all mixed together.
Oil & vinegar if you want a dressing.
you want serious news turn off cable/network news
Why is Michelle Bernard on my teevee? She is a freaking GOP operative, I guess MSNBC in it’s infinite wisdom thinks that she is thus perfect to cover the Dem primary. My wife went to grade school and high school with Bernard, says she is a stuck up prima donna.
I turned the channel. Am now watching The First 48. Much nicer watching real detectives trying to solve a murder. LOL
thanks elliot. i’ll call her
I
want
my
Grit
teevee!
Now that is a good idea.
Bless you. Are you able to keep her warm? That might be a potential problem. Our flying squirrel was only one month, we knew, because his eyes opened only just as of the next day after we got him. We kept him in a home-made incubator, left over from my grad-school days. (then it was quail, what the hey?!)
Cute story: our little guy, matured, not only happily snuggled in pockets at the soccer games, but LOVED being put on our big fireplace mantle beam, so he could leap/”fly” to us. Gotta love it?!
I would encourage you to contact vet, or at least a breeder, for advice on feeding orphaned little-ones. As far as I know, none of these little guys does well on cow’s milk from the store. Tummy upsets are the last thing she needs at this point.
Oh, and good luck getting any decent sleep for the forseeable future. It won’t last forever. It just feels like it. ;->
A commenter on the McClachy story has the right idea. I like this:

I think it would be fun for him to start wearing STATE flag pins, and ribbon pins for noble causes (e.g. The Cure for breast cancer). Mix it up. Every so often put on a US flag pin. Then he could ask rhetorically: “What does Senator McCain have against [insert name of state or cause]?” Maybe appear on SNL, Stewart, or Colbert with his entire lapel covered with State and Cause pins, like a be-medalled war hero. I’m just being goofy of course, but I think it adopting a Pin of the Day would be a terrific poke-in-the-eye of the Flag Pin Litmus Test for Patriotism. The people who are “concerned” about his flag pin are never going to vote for him anyway, so using some light-hearted humor would be a nice way to increase his attractiveness.
Oooh — that sounds yummy. I have a recipe for a spinach salad with strawberries and a homemade poppy seed dressing hat I haven’t made in ages. But now you have given me a craving. (And I just ate!)
At that age she only does two thirds of normal kitten activity, eat and sleep. Once her eyes open the cycle is completed with play.
It’s up top, isn’t it?
Showin’ yer age.
I switched over to CNN. Maybe I should switch back?
when she is in the carrier, we placed lil plastic bottles full of warm water and over it a few layers of towels and then a few more towels so she can dig under and snuggle
I do wonder how the “White, working class voters support me more than Obama” schtick will work in Puerto Rico, though?
Oooooh — I love that! Thanks — I may have to work that into a post…
christy-at 60-at 89 in the last thread i posted the wild and wonderful website…….lotsa things there to do…..
i have muscle issues, and every chance i could get, if i lived there, i would go seek out the springs to recharge.
that is what led me to west virginia in the first place, and the ramps. and the cass train. and the romney train.
one thing if you can soak in hot springs, go to berkely springs and soak in one of their big tile tubs…..like a mini-swimming pool in a private room, while you sip on icy spring water……has a spa in another building. but low-key, not highbrow…..also has a museum. george washington ’soaked there’
if in summer, go to the swimming pool next door, which is spring water……the romney train isn’t too far from there. (a local guy from here is part owner)
if peanut is going too on the ’break’, then instead, go down the street from the homestead in hot springs virginia, right over the border, natural hot springs there, separate women’s and men’s huts…..total fun…round, with an open ceiling, i was there when it was raining once……..bubbles come up from below, float on your back and they tickle. like a hut built over a spring…..can get ’spa’ stuff there, too…….george washington ’soaked’ there, too.
or just go to the snowshoe inn and go swimming and eat at the bar down the street……and go across the street and buy a bumper sticker….and take the cass train.
yeah, lots of ways to recharge in wva, including just staying home and taking a drive.
: )
good to hear that. she just sleeps so much. I know it’s normal but I just keep checking to make sure she is breathing *g*
We do the “take a drive” thing pretty frequently. It’s gorgeous here right now in that lush late spring green sort of way. And the local ice cream stands have started to open out in the countryside, which means The Peanut likes to play “spot the cone” and make us pull over for one… *g*
Mine was very different in origin, probably, but still, some things might be similar. STRONG advice: Stay alert for the flare-ups, and take special care to try to “pamper” yourself at such times. It may pay big dividends. It did with me.
Also. I assume you are in touch with phys. therapy people? If not, that’s another biggie in my book. It literally saved my hash to learn how to keep exercising, but in ways that maintained joint flexibility and muscle strength without further inflaming tender joints.
Again, please translate to your own situational needs. Mine was text-book Lyme.
luv u gal!
hmmm well there are white puerto ricans so they might appreciate it but the brown ones won’t
wobbly at 70–good mama.
If anyone had a brain at MSNBC, they would realize that Hillary is waitng for American Idol to get over before giving her speech.
Wobbly, good for you for hanging in there. I loved Elliot’s idea above about finding a mother cat right now who is already feeding some babies. You could slip your little one in there for some ‘yum yums’. ;-)
I really suck at the “pamper myself” thing. Mr. ReddHedd tries to nudge me in that direction from time to time, but I need to be a lot better about it. Good advice, thanks.
That’s because you’re a good mommy.
Only 9% has reported in so far. Wouldn’t it be hysterical if Obama blew by her @ the 40%-in mark?
HAHAHAHAHAHA — Oh man, that is so true. American Idol ruling the broadcast timing. Too perfect a statement of where we are at the moment in this country, isn’t it?
um, no.
One way to analyze this is to realize that you’ve got 40% of the other candidates base, right off the bat. Then you’ve got a certain % of defectors…and some people who are at least open to your message.
23% is a bit high, but now you have to compare the participation levels in the Primaries (Republican vs. Democrat). If the Republicans drew a greater number than the Democrats back in January then this might be very worrisome losing 23% of the voters to the other side (how many re-registered after that Primary as Democrats or Independents is another issue). But if the turnout tonight is 2-3 times that of the Republican primary when it was competitive then you have to think those defections may not matter that much if one can convince the “open” Democrats on the issues.
Oh, and there is also a likely dissatisfaction effect with McCain. McCain only receiuved 1% of the vote in West Virginia. Part of this was, for sure, a deal to prevent one of his rivals from winning substantial candidates. But there still could be many Republicans that supported Huckabee, Paul, etc. decide not to vote at all.
Some of we are on the Bering Sea with dishy Mike Rowe’s voice catchin’ crab.
