Oh, look whose lobbyist crony connections have come home to roost. Welcome to the spotlight, Sen. McCain:
Campaign Money Watch has a new petition up:
John McCain’s campaign relies on well-heeled Washington lobbyists to run and raise money for his White House bid. In fact, he’s relying on at least 112 lobbyists as staff or fundraisers, including at least ten who represent brutal dictators, human rights abusers, and other unsavory foreign interests.
They are calling on John McCain to fire three lobbyists in particular: Charlie Black (McCain’s senior counsel and spokesman), Tom Loeffler (McCain’s national co-chairman), and Peter Madigan (a leading fundraiser).
Senator McCain has previously stated, “I will demand that people serve their country first and the special interests second.” Yet, the three lobbyists listed above together have taken in a whopping $16 million to advocate on behalf of foreign governments, often from dictators like Philippines’ Ferdinand Marcos, Mobuto Sese Seko of Zaire, Nigeria’ Ibrahim Babangida, and Angolan rebel and “classical terrorist” Jonas Savimbi. They have also worked for the repressive regimes of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
There is no separation between campaign work and lobbying in McCain’s world. Charlie Black has made lobbying calls from onboard John McCain’s campaign bus, the Straight Talk Express. Tom Loeffler, who set up high level meetings between Saudi Arabia and White House officials like Karl Rove and George Bush, has said he will continue to handle “all the work” for the lobbying firm he founded while working on the McCain campaign. Saudi Arabia has played a key role in fostering Islamic terrorism and has received over $40 billion in U.S. weapons over the last few years.
All this begs the question: Who do the people who run the McCain campaign really serve – the United States of America or their foreign paymasters?
Maverick, my ass. K Street old bosses of the GOP, meet the K Street new bosses of the GOP. Just like the George Bush years…now with more cronies!
You can sign the petition here. And more information here. Plus, Media Matters has this handy interactive chart of all of McCain’s lobbyist cronies. Sweet!

Hi Christy!
In the email about this I just got from MoveOn.org, they had a poll and firing all 112 lobbyists was leading by a lot.
Hi Redd–Election Day for you isn’t it?
Christy,
Got that popcorn popped yet? Will it be a relief for the press to move on or is it nice for WV to get actual attention?
When does the cable news network election day bloviating begin?
Wow: Saudi Arabia, Zaire under Mobuto, Phillipines under Marcos….
sounds more like the Straight Fingernail-Pulling Express.
Why does Sen McCain choose torturers’ servants for his retinue?
It would be nice if the press treated us like human beings and not some amalgam of the Beverly Hillbillies and Gomer Pyle. But it is nice to be able to get a close look at the campaigning.
I’ll have more on the WV primary coverage and the primary later on…
Well, lookee at all the Airbus consultants. No wonder Boeing didn’t get the tanker contract.
Am I the only one with toobz problems this afternoon?
Aloha, Redd! Mahalo, and I signed it!
OT–This can’t be good. Hagee and Donohue bury the hatchet?
I suspect that “the common good” for Hagee and Donohue will not be good for much of the country and will include a lot of McCain.
I haven’t had any problems, FWIW.
I don’t have a link handy but I think I read that McCain himself interceded some on the Airbus side of things
And don’t forget that Washington State has 2 Democratic Senators and a Democratic Governor
I’ll take Hillary by 35 points tonight. Any other guesses?
No, the “common good” has more to do with continued obeisance to the GOP’s money crowd and their crony-riddled spoils program.
I wrote that up a couple of months back…should pull up on Google.
Now’s the time to be delivering for campaign contributors- as you’re fixin ta ask em for a few million more.
Christie, did you see this at TP…
The inside scoop on Sunday show guests.»
Here’s the airbus/McCain’s lobbyist cronies write-up.
Thank you. I was pretty sure I’d read someone writing about the wrongs. Of course, it was you. :})
Here’s a ThinkProgress story:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/…..bus-merci/
I also remember a NPR story a few weeks ago where Boeing has now filed a lawsuit alledging…something.
Back to the Google!
With Bob Barr in, I think McCain’s got real problems…but ”112 lobbyists as staff or fundraisers, including at least ten who represent brutal dictators, human rights abusers, and other unsavory foreign interests.”…he’s in real trouble.
Here’s the NPR story:

goops fragmenting. It’s the biggest story out there- and it’s not being talked about much…
You’ve got the Barr thingee
Then you’ve got wall street jumpin ship
Then you’ve got the religious right sayin that they ain’t much into politics anymore.
Oughta be worth a little ink.
What’s McBush’s strategy to rescue his party?
McGovern has an interesting op/ed this morning- suggesting that the two dem candidates campaign through the balance of the primaries sharing a stage and sharing hugs. No money spent- no nastiness. Not a bad idea.
rotsa ruck
Something like that COULD happen as the delegates in the states after Oregon won’t amount to much and they will be split in any event.
All Hillary wants is enough delegates in the bank so that if Obama falls on his ass- the supers can hand it to her….a split after Oregon should cover it.
Aite, far be it from me to throw water on the idea.
Well, THAT would freak the Goopers out.
Don’t bunch up, keep your ingterval.
You’re probably right in thinking that it won’t happen- but it WOULD seem to match the interests of both campaigns at this stage…
Why spend money that they don’t have to- for something that is of no value?
Hey Christy
hope you got some rest in preparation for Mountaineer Night at the Lake
and let us not forget 13 of his co-chairs donated $16 million to 527’s
It would suck all the media oxygen up — the McCain people would go apeshit. Might be worth it for that alone. *g*
It would cause a lot of folks to look like Linda Blair in The Exorcist.
Yeah—-although it isn’t clear to me that McBush WANTS much oxygen right now…he seems to have been just fine with talkin to himself.
If the spotlight comes- so does the critique.
Sorry, off topic …
Hey Kirk
Did you catch this
Just want to be clear that I would never advocate any kind of law-breaking – which I would never do – and anyone caught doing anything that could endanger others, should be prosecuted – but can you say “entrapment”?
More here and here’s a pic of “Anna”
I have it on very good authority that this will be appealed and vigorously argued
McBush seems to be starting his slow turn to the center and his public denunciation of the Clusterfucker- so maybe he DOES want attention right now.
Might be worth it for that, too. *g*
I am clearly going to have to make a pot of coffee for this evening. I am absolutely exhausted, and it’s not even 6 pm ET yet…
“Hey who’s that geezer?”
“That’s McCain- wants ta be prez”
“Little OLD ain’t he”
“Yeah- but he’s real SHORT”
McBush plans to hike the Grand Canyon. So who has to carry the sedan chair?
Shades of “Passage To India”?
christy at 39—eat some protein.
If you can’t wait for Nora, here’s a bit of the exit polling from W. Virginia:
AND LOOKING AHEAD TO NOVEMBER
Barely a third of Clinton supporters say they’d vote for Obama over John McCain in a November matchup. As many claim they’d vote for Republican John McCain and a quarter said they would not vote for president. If that horse race were Clinton vs. McCain, half of Obama backers say they’d vote for Clinton, about three in 10 say they’d back McCain and the rest would stay home.
DEMOGRAPHIC HIGHLIGHTS
As expected, roughly 95 percent of West Virginia Democratic primary voters were white. Half of voters were from rural areas.
It was one of the oldest electorates among 31 Democratic primaries with exit polls to date, with four in 10 over age 60. The only other states with somewhat similar numbers were Arkansas, Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma — and Hillary Clinton won all four states.
It also was the electorate with the highest proportion — just about seven in 10 — of people who lack a college degree thus far this primary season. The same held true for whites without a college degree — again, historically a strong Clinton group.
Preliminary results from exit polling by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International for The Associated Press and television networks. Partial samples of 1,016 voters in 30 precincts around in West Virginia; sampling error plus or minus 4 points.
We are having way too much fun here at Casa Smith this afternoon. The Peanut and I bought Mr. ReddHedd a Wii Sport as an early Father’s Day present. He’s wanted one for ages, and I saved up to buy one last Christmas and then couldn’t find one. Stumbled onto a new delivery of them today when we ran out to do a coupla errands, and bought it.
The Peanut spilled the beans on the phone with him, so the “surprise” wasn’t going to wait for Father’s Day. They are setting it up right now. Guess I’ll be watching election returns int he kitchen. *g*
Do you have a link on that, rw?
Or perhaps Gilbert Ryle in Concept of Mind : “She arrived in a flood of tears and a sedan chair” (Ryle’s idea of joke).
Well- yeah- I’ll have ta go back and find it!

There’s the link (AP)
This is strange to me from a logistics and logical perspective. Would it be better to try to have McSame fire people that show how out of touch he is? Would it not be a lot better to use these people and their records during the contest between Obama and McSame to show just how corrupt McSame is and whom, amongst so many, are his puppeteers?
I can’t help but wonder how much help having these people that appear to ordinary Americans as criminals on his team and in our faces daily. Can you?
Why the rush to dictate what McSame does? He is going about destroying himself and the party, continuing cheney’s legacy, better than we can ever do by acting like a complete idiot. Having his various mafioso capo’s out there making it plain what the voter is getting with their contribution is going to drive millions to Obama’s campaign as well as the other candidates that really want to clean up Dodge City.
am I way off base here? Or is someone not thinking this out?
Just in case you weren’t sure about Rumsfeld:
An ongoing exploration of the documents related to the Pentagon’s “message force multipliers” program has unearthed a clip of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld suggesting that America, having voted the Democrats back into Congressional power, could benefit from suffering another terrorist attack, and doing so in the presence of the very same military analysts who went on to provide commentary and analysis of the Iraq War.
Huffington
and Christy; nearly 70% of people in WV think their vote is bought and paid for? Just saw a disturbing story that seems to indicate your state expects corruption in any election? Raw Story headline
Anybody else smell a rat?
Bless you — thanks!
We’ve had a LOT of corruption problems in this state for ages. But I’d have to see the article to see if it’s accurate — or someone blowing smoke up someone else’s expectations. *g*
Yer Welcome-
BBQ.
At what time do your polls close?
Because defining him early and often as not the honest Maverick the media paints him to be has incredible value if you can have him tagged int he public mind as a hypocrite who takes free rides on the Sugar Momma express and thinks the rules are for little people?
Better be a BIG one.
Not until 7:30 pm ET. And we will likely have a call for whomever wins shortly thereafter from what I’m hearing.
Did you see the Wii “Fit” game? That looks like fun.
they could’ve called this one a month ago apprently
The guy who predicts soley on demographics who is the leader in calling primaries so far, says Clinton by 39.
OT, but Dana’s been a bad girl.
Another post upstairs—that’s too SOON!

Dog’s been sunning herself. Now it’s time to come inside and lay on the couch with all four legs stickin up in the air…
She’s not in a mood to exert herself much.
Ya know, Christy, it’s really disingenuous of you to focus on McCain issues on the eve of Hillary’s very big coup in your state. Where are your priorities? (Oh? Well, then, never mind.)
Hey, I did a primary post earlier today with many complimentary things to say about both candidates. And believe me, there’s more to come on the primary…just thought you all would like a breather. *g* (I know I wanted one.)
I trust you know my tongue was WAY in cheek!!! Bless you for looking at what really matters.
You know I have a bowl o’ popcorn with your name on it, too. *g* I have a feeling that we’ll get an early evening, just based on the number of ladies I saw out holding “Honk For Hillary” signs this week alone…
John, I did see that. I can’t imagine (much) dumber and more destuctive than planning to bomb a fish hatchery…and I’m wholly opposed to violence.
But the court coverage (and the jurors’ comments) sure sounded like “Anna” was a classic “honey trap” entrapment.
So sad to see what my government has become. I can’t wait to discuss this on the “snitch” book salon this sunday.
Oh – and the Feds’ JTTF is looking for new informants to infiltrate vegan potlucks in Minneapolis before the RNC. I feel safer already – I’ll be able to enjoy my weekly grass-fed beef in peace, I guess.
Ain’t life in the Green Scare grand?
eads under investigation for insider trading……said boeing earlier, meant eads

Polls close at 7:30 eastern…how many seconds later will Hillary be calling herself the Comeback Kid?
And back to early comments in thread re Airbus, wasn’t some Rethuglican “leader” busily projecting today about the Dems turning America into France?
Any Mississippians hereabouts to give us the flavah of the special election down there today?
