But Algore is like sooooo totally fat and drives a car and has a big house!
The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached a record high, according to the latest figures, renewing fears that climate change could begin to slide out of control.
Scientists at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii say that CO2 levels in the atmosphere now stand at 387 parts per million (ppm), up almost 40% since the industrial revolution and the highest for at least the last 650,000 years.
Whatever. These librul scientists with their fancy "measurements" and "scientific methods." Puh-lease. Well, my man George Will has a great question for these Cassandras.
Given that Earth is always warming or cooling, what is its proper temperature, and how do you know?
In your face, science nerds! Republicans are on to your secret socialist anti-American agenda!
Less than half of all Republicans believe there is solid evidence of global warming, compared to 84% of Democrats and 75% of Independents, according to a recent Pew poll.
Good luck with that in November, St. McCain.

zed. Hell yeah!
BT, your post raises a serious question: when people treat unsupported political opinions as equally valuable and valid as observed scientific fact, how much trouble are we really in?
George Will, another free thinking leader in the Back to the 12th Century Club.
We are screwed Ron.
Screwed.
What possible damage could climate change cause? So there are cyclones and hurricanes…
Hey, RonD!!!
George Will! Eminent Scientist, right up there with Tom Delay. LMAO!
Take a trip to the Rockies! And see where those glaciers are melting! And have been melting for decades… speeding up now. Soon they’ll be gone…. and what’s the cause, please?
They believe this because Rush, Billo, and Sean tell them too. I can understand…it’s a hell of a scary prospect, and the urge to deny it all and thus be comforted is very strong.
Hey, Loo Hoo!

A better question, George, might be
And this question was kinda answered by society, when society built all those coastal cities. Maybe George?

Bill McKibben, The Defining Moment for Climate Change
I love this piece.
Anybody know anything about Venn Strategies? I got some email from them looking for economists to sign on to a carbon cap and trade program.
I was hoping since this was on global warming some folks knew about them and the carbon thang … obviously not my specialty
Question for George Will and Tom Delay and the rest of the deniers:
Q: So, you are saying that if a tornado or hurricane or a forest fire caused by natural lightning is bearing down directly on you, you would take no evasive action because it’s “natural”?
These morons. Don’t let them frame the debate with Straw Men.
Notwithstanding that the aggregate credible science confirms the widespread and mounting negative salient attributes of the anthropocene era, it is equally rational to take concerted countermeasures against nascent “natural disasters” (like, uh, George Will and Tom Delay).
Alexander Cockburn, a leftie who writes for the Nation and one whose opinion I respect as well researched and considered, says evidence supports the perception a substantial component of global warming is not caused by humans. He reasons that during the depression thirties, the CO2 in the atmosphere continued its steady rise although human industrial activity and CO2 production decreased.
That said, and even if he is correct, there clearly is a human component in global warming. It might be more persuasive if rather that say all global warming is human caused, that we say enough of it is for us to take steps to reduce the human contribution. It would not only give us a clue as to what mother nature is up to, if she is up to anything, it would reduce global warming generally. The Repubs and people for whom money is the most important thing in the universe, denigrate humanity which is why they try so hard to ‘distinguish’ themselves. It is difficult, if not impossible, for them to see humans as amounting to much, certainly not enough to influence the climate.
John I’m-A-Greenie McBu’ush speech yesterday on global warming:
Everyone needs to loudly call bullshit.
Question for John McBu’ush:
Dude, you’re a sitting Senator. Sponsor a friggin’ bill right now and push for passage. Wait until you’re President? Why?
What crap.
A lot.
Given that George Will almost always says something stupid daily, how do you know if today is any different?

This is great because every Hurricane and soon every foot of Florida that starts going under water hurts the GOP.
You could be the most antiabortion, gay hating, I luv Corporations GOPer out there but what happens is a Hurricane takes out your house? What happens if the next step of global warming kicks in and the ocean levels rise takes your backyard.
Your house your land disappear you start to question your old belief on global warming. Then as your entire world changes what other of your GOP beliefs will you start to question?
We need solar powered laptops. think of the possibilities.

Given that chance is lumpy, it’s easy to cherry-pick loud transient variations to buttress an assertion. But the trend pre-and post-depression could not be more clear.

That’s because the facts of Global Warming do not support The Agenda. Screw reality. It’s all about the Agenda.
My loving family member (/s) came over to spout forth all the Fox News talking points. It occurred to me (as you all know) that he cares not if these talking points are true, only that they support The Agenda. He moved easily from one position to another when I shot each point down.
I also realized that every single point was, tada, PRO OIL. The only group that could support throwing live kids into a volcano and deny global warming are the oil tycoons.
Why a relative of mine feels personally benefitted by such a position is a mystery to me and one I will have to take to my grave cause he ain’t gonna change.
St. McCain will be allowed to modify his position on global warming to best fit his audience and his election status. The MSM will dutifly report his changing positions, noting no conflicts with previous ones. It is good to be St McCain.
LOL, maybe I’ll program my koolaid drinker’s phone with it. Bwahahahaha…

When there are huge dislocations of people whether from famine, war, rising oceans, societies change especially any belief that led to this unwanted change occurring.
The GOP by claiming the there is No Global Warming position is setting themselves up for failure.
Look at Obama the GOP ruled the 70’s and 80’s with the exception of Bill with their racist Southern Strategy now people have turned against that so much Obama very well might win in part because he is African American. The strength of this assertion can be measured by the number of younger voters who are rejecting Racism and voting for Obama
I expect Global Warming to pay similar dividends for te Left in the future.
I think it’s because its use in munitions can pretty easily be called a war crime. If you accuse your own government of war crimes, it apparently makes you an “America Hater”.

My koolaid drinker says we don’t want a repeat of Vietnam (too late) so we need to stay. and/or keep supplies coming in while we withdraw (with honor!) after Iraq has fully functioning govt (never!).
We cannot have people hanging off helicopters in Iraq. It’d be a disaster! So let’s keep dying over there, troops! It’s the American way!
Yes, I’m still recovering from this actual conversation. Jeez!
At least that’s pre-Industrial Revolution! Funny thing, while Al Gore is trying to save the earth by convincing people of the importance of reducing carbon emissions and the use of fossil fuels, the Republicans are trying to take us back to somewhere between the Stone Age (survival of the fittest) and the Dark Ages (before civil rights became popular, or allowable)!
Blue Texan -
just now read Will’s link - it’s a bitch slap of McCain, the whole screed - really liked his dig about public financing - and no, I don’t agree with him but luvvv that always hot Republic on Republic action - um, gimme some more!
the real point is as follows;
they do not want the populace educated, they cannot stand an educated informed electorate
and they do not care about their children, they care about their profit and this day, not tomorrow
Sale of rights to excess emissions so as the worlds richest country we can buy the most excess emissions to pollute which we will.
Does anyone want to live in the most polluted country? Serious China has higher MPG rates on their cars made by Ford and GM than us. Imagine what happens if Bush has his way on this.
The poor nations get clean we get dirtier and anyone who can will leave. The Hamptons, Beverly Hills etc will no longer be safe from pollution.
All those rich people building huge retreats in Montana, the Dakotas etc are going to find their soon to be polluted homes worthless if mining takes off again like Darth wants.
(everybody on the train from Seattle to Chicago heard the Western States people complain about rich folk coming in and building huge winter homes and they didn’t like it? Why are the rich going west building far from even Western cities?)
I grant all of that, but you have to realize we (humanity collectively) are literally crazy. Our perception of human nature is so negative many of us cannot credit humanity for being responsible for anything. The problem is also systemic. Capitalism will never solve it. We have people like Laurie David and Brad Pitt flying around in private jets to lecture on global warming. The criticism of Al Gore and his big house is not entirely unwarranted, but no one individual holds the solution. His is not the only mansion in the world.
We can begin with our political process. Not only is the war in Iraq unsound politically, it is unsound environmentally and although the 2006 election seemed to mandate a change of course, our course did not change. We have two choices. We can go with representative democracy which doesn’t work and with corporate monies pulling here and there, works less and less or we create direct democracy. The internet is a good place to start. How do you have a meaningful conversation amongst millions of people? We couldn’t, collectively, stop going to the movies to support the writer’s strike. Don’t see us of a mind to do anything about global warming. I, for one, don’t know what to do about that.
Really. Popcorn.
Don’t forget the earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanos! (That’s not to mention famine and drought.) With the greater portions of the Antarctic ice shelf dropping into the ocean much faster than most scientists predicted, I gotta agree. We’re screwed, bigtime.
I found an interesting article recently about some cause for optimism, and wrote about it here.

That’s Jesus, punishing teh gays.
The one’s that don’t believe in global warming are the people who have been successfully terrified by the “terrorists” who want to control them and use them. They want to be told what they want to hear…that they will be okay, and that someone is going to protect them.
They are very fearful and, therefore, the most easily manipulated. The percentage is much less now than in 2001-2005, nonetheless, the really “frightened ones” are hanging on to the myth that they were spoon fed by Bushco.
Although I sometimes think…oh, they are so stupid…I realize that they are just extremely frightened citizens. The problem is that their fear will cause them to have a really rude awakening when it may be too late.
Thanks. I still think it needs some major, major sunlight.
And the effects of DU on the environment, our soldiers, and civilians has been really well known since then. And yet we hear almost nothing about it here in the US…
Gee, Mr. Will, I dunno, but maybe we should consider defining “proper” in this context as the temperature to which our entire civilization has been adapted for as long as there has been such a thing as civilization? Just a thought.
Almost exactly a year ago (May 31, 2007), I posted the following as a comment on another blog, after hearing Nasa director Griffin speaking on NPR. I think its worth repeating, as I find it a very useful way of thinking about this stuff. (And apologies for the length.)
Better yet, and I believe, knowable, is at what temperatures can life as we know it survive. We know that the earth’s temperature has been up and down, but we also know that at some temperatures, life as we know it was wiped out. The temperatures in which our species has survived and flourished is detectable and traceable, and the effect that humans and animal life have on the planet is also discernible.
Exactly, which is the most effective way to opiate the people into not holding those who are really responsible, responsible. Sort of the definition of how religion explains the works of Satan…but they just don’t get it.
Hahahahaha!
I once had to do some research for an economic development project about 20 years ago and something interesting I found was that the rate of birth defects and baby deaths was the same for Newark, NJ as it was for wealthy areas in the same county. When I called the NJ Health Dept. to ask why their answer was, “We all get our water from the same place.” So, wealth and education don’t shield people from pollution.
FSTV is having a program on DU right now…part of their fundraising drive…frikkin’ scary shizzola..and infuriating.
And you are so arrogant for thinking that humans, and even animal life as we know it are optimal for the earth.
It is just as reasonable to assume the creatures that spring forth after our extinction are the real “owners” of the earth. They will decide the optimal temperature, water level, and number of hurricanes needed annually to keep teh gays in line.
Allot of those people are on WallStreet they still refuse to buy green stocks never mind the returns. These are the people who control the big Investment bank, Pension fund. and Hedgefund money, there might be a few exceptions.
But even without those guys buying up the stocks they are growing better than the DOW right now. What happens to the GOP when a Dem president hopefully puts some real money into green power companies and WallStreet decides to buy green chasing government money?
The Lefties on the ground floor will be raking it in then because George Will convinced the GOPers running WallStreet not to buy…until the Lefties got in first! Bwahhahah!
Name another class of investment that a normal person can get in on the ground floor ahead of WallStreet before it goes big!
Oh a do not buy stock just because its green do some research or buy a green fund that you like their investment philosophy and do not bet it all just what you can lose.
Another thing the Pukes won’t acknowledge is the danger of nuclear energy plants…The devastation from Chernobyl was massive, and the ongoing radiation deaths to this day are never looked at anymore…
Another upside: maybe George Will will decide to vote for Bob Barr, and devote a whole buncha columns to that between now and November. Who says ignorance can’t have a silver lining?
Blue Texan -
an example of how bad it could be for them -
Mr CBL and I were at an auction in Pflugerville 2 years ago - nothin’ but middle aged and older white texas males - went to get a drink and guess what they were all talking about ? - yep, the very real concept of global warming and it’s effects on their lives
- Pflugerville for gaia’s sake! and they think they can go back to the denial meme now ? gimmee some of that McCain polling cash -
twisted and wonderful
I can see a mass migration of the 28%rs over to Bob Barr, and some moderate independents sticking with McBush…
Should be really interesting..
I think when we talk about somehow “saving the planet” we are indeed arrogant. The planet will burp and go on without us just fine.
What we need to talk about is fouling our own nest! What we are doing is destroying our own habitat…along with the habitat of many other species.
LS and Smgumby
the denial of benefits to Vets/families suffering from Gulf War Syndrome was the first crack in my Clintonia mirror . . .things sorta picked up speed from there
Ding, ding, ding…
I’m listening to a vet say that when he described his illness as the result of DU, he was labeled by the VA as a PTSD patient…all in your head….hmmmm…sounds familiar? He’s a Gulf I vet. They have definitely used it in Iraq on this go around…not to mention Willie Pete.
Forkers.
Gulf war syndrome? Say wha??? Must all be in their heads…
Bill Clinton could have put a stop to our use of DU, he could have pushed for previous administrations to be held accountable…
We don’t do “accountable” real well as a nation.
The next bubble: Priming the markets for tomorrow’s big crash”:
…We have learned that the industry in any given bubble must support hundreds or thousands of separate firms financed by not billions but trillions of dollars in new securities that Wall Street will create and sell. Like housing in the late 1990s, this sector of the economy must already be formed and growing even as the previous bubble deflates. For those investing in that sector, legislation guaranteeing favorable tax treatment, along with other protections and advantages for investors, should already be in place or under review. Finally, the industry must be popular, its name on the lips of government policymakers and journalists. It should be familiar to those who watch television news or read newspapers.
There are a number of plausible candidates for the next bubble, but only a few meet all the criteria. Health care must expand to meet the needs of the aging baby boomers, but there is as yet no enabling government legislation to make way for a health-care bubble; the same holds true of the pharmaceutical industry, which could hyperinflate only if the Food and Drug Administration was gutted of its power. A second technology boom—under the rubric “Web 2.0”—is based on improvements to existing technology rather than any new discovery. The capital-intensive biotechnology industry will not inflate, as it requires too much specialized intelligence.
There is one industry that fits the bill: alternative energy,
http://bgladd.blogspot.com/
How much of our power comes from Green Energy right now? Maybe 10% (total guess) It would take years for us to get to 50% green power in America this bubble talk before it happens is stocktrader talk (don’t buy the stock I diss at least until I buy it first!)
You got it right. George Carlin said it really well…
But if we as a species plan to survive, we are gonna need to plan to survive. Mother nature is gonna pick us off like a flea, left to her own devices. The earth is gonna be just fine. We on the other hand, are very likely screwed.

Speakin’ of Al Gore, has anyone heard anythin’ about the case against his son…are the California authorities holdin’ charges over his head as leverage against the ‘Old Man”?
And why are people beginnin’ ta line up for a “unity” ticket with Obama and “she who should forever be nameless”? She doesn’t do Obama any good electorally (I would say she even hurts ‘im) and he needs a VP that he ken trust and entrust for major congressional initiatives (like global warming, alternative energy or healthcare)…and most importantly, he needs a VP who helps him govern and will bring a bunch of NGO’s (non-governmental officials) especially military brass to the administration that aren’t tied to the old corporatist military-industrial machine.
I hope Obama is too smart ta put Mr. or Mrs. Bill anywhere close ta the White House without a guest pass.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THIS IS THE MOST DANGEROUS TIME FOR OUR NEW LEADER!!
In 1986 I was managing a REMP database for a nuke plant startup in Perry, Ohio, for the radiation lab I worked for in Oak Ridge. We routinely analyzed samples spanning all environmental media (soil, water, milk, vegetation, fish, air, etc) with which to establish baselines within a 5 mile radius of the plant. The air filters always came back “<0.04 pCi/cu. m." -- below LLD (the Lower Limit of Determination).
One week after Chernobyl blew we got positive hits out of all the air filter collectors for airborne I-131, from Chernobyl. The readings stayed positive for a month until the shit died down via decay (1/2 life of 8.05 days).
Small world indeed.

There is no “correct” level for the sea. Ask Noah.
It is always funny to watch the deniers. It is hilarious when they are religious as well. They just never seem to be able to equate that their whole life is all science and it’s effects. Since they are against what keeps them alive, what is allowing them to stand up? It is a brain, but it just doesn’t seem well developed yet. Or is it poisoned and thus on the decline?
We do need to ban DU we need to make it an issue now. Spider silk is supposed to be real strong I wonder how strong fiberglass would be if it were made of that stuff assuming the glass was high temperture resistant silicon that might work as a replacement armor for our troops. Granted this is not my field just idle speculation.
The GOP will point out DU saves our troops lives, but in a long war like Iraq constant exposure to DU should kill more solders and Iraqis long term than bullets.
The goal of armor should be keep the troops safe today and tomarrow!
Yup. Check it out EO 13139…
Here’s an article about it at the time:
“President Clinton signed Executive Order 13139 on Sept. 30 authorizing the Department of Defense to administer “new investigational drugs” to troops —- with or without their consent —- to protect them from biological, chemical or radiological agents during military actions.
The executive order modified a Defense Department policy to issue pyridostigmine bromide tablets to U.S. troops during Operation Desert Storm in Iraq in 1991 to protect them from possible chemical attacks from the Iraqi army.
The 1991 action was criticized by some veterans groups.
On Oct. 5, the Food and Drug Administration adopted a companion measure to the president’s order. The FDA measure lays out the ground rules under which the Defense Department can unilaterally administer “new investigational drugs” to its troops —- rules the federal government maintains has new safeguards for the military while critics worry that they will erode their rights.”

We use DU because it pierces armor really well, not as armor. We cover our shells in it. On impact it releases uranium into the soil, groundwater, and air.

But cuts through a tank like a hot knife through butter…
That is in fact what the IPCC and climate scientists actually say, typically in the form of “human activity is a major component.” The idea that it’s either/or usually comes from people applying creationist-style logic. Meaning that creationists regularly argue that any evidence questioning evolutionary theory is automatically evidence for creationism, which would only be the case if those were the only possible alternatives. Similarly, global warming deniers often cite other sources of warming as “disproving” the idea that human sources cause global warming, without providing evidence that their other sources are sufficient to explain all the data. (Their evidence for the strength of other sources frequently turns out to be bogus, too, but that’s a separate point.)

There is a terrific book that put it all in perspective for me: Earthdance: Living Systems in Evolution by Elisabet Sahtouris. There is a segment with her on a To the Best of Our Knowledge program that explains it pretty well. Listen to Segment 3 (probably the last 20 minutes or so).
Will is certainly correct! There is surely no “proper temperature” for the earth. As that great enunciator of the obvious once said “It is what it is”.
George Will appears to be a willing student of Dr. Pangloss in “Candide”. As such “everything is wonderful and perfect”…even drought, wildfires, tornados, hurricanes (explains his utter ambivalence about Katrina), flash floods, famine, and the wars that emerge from them. “It’s natural!” Sheesh…this is the same mush-brained addled logic that Conservo-pundits like Will erroneously attribute to the “Hippies”. It pervades their thinking far more (it’s the foundation of “laissez-faire” economics and social policy…and assumes the “hidden-hand” is “good…because it is natural”.
For George Will the 1000 degree Farenheit radioactive sulphuric acid world of the Hadean Era when only the most thermophilic bacteria could survive is just the same as the Ice Ages!
Let’s just say that Will seems to think that Goldilocks should find all the porridges equally satisfying and all the beds equally comfortable…what the hell…she’s just a freeloader anyway!
Will seems to misunderstand the very basics of the relationship of nature to man. Man MUST live within the constraints of nature or suffer, or go extinct. But there are certainly temperature ranges that make our survival as a nation, civilization, and humans on this planet sustainable.
My bad this is not my field but that makes it easier to replace we have the money to buy extra non DU shells if thats what it takes to do the job.
