On the first edition of GritTV with Laura Flanders — media on media. Listen to three leading progressive voices who put the word out– Phil Donahue, talk show host turned documentarian, whose film — Body of War — chronicles a GI wounded in Iraq; Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of the country’s oldest weekly magazine, The Nation, 2007 winner of two Peabody Awards and a National Magazine Award; and. of course, Jane Hamsher, founder of the one and only Firedoglake.

Woops…of course…
Beautiful Katrina vanden Heuvel!!!!
What a bunch of great people!!
Katrina vanden Heuvel kicks ass.
Thank you, selise!
Phil… I’m not so sure about,. He’s kinda cute, I guess, but Jane and Laura and Katrina are absolutely radiant.
;))
Hi Laura, welcome to the Lake from a long-time Lake Dweller…
Just for a bit of humor… Sarah Silverman is f**king Matt Damon. O/T but very funny.
Had to do it, sorry. :)
stop
;~P
This is the first time I have seen or heard Katrina.
So far, so good! I love the idea!
“I have the Dish with 600 channels – 400 are selling the Bowflex machine and the rest are selling Jewlry and Jesus”
LOL
Go Phil! Go Jane! Go Laura! Go Katrina!
ahhhh – i’m a happy camper!! 4 of my favorite people in 1 place!! nirvana ;o)
Very cool. Just look at this gross bifurcation of information systems taking place right before our very eyes. How many times have I seen on sites like this great discussions about issues, media, and travesties we hope never to repeat, only to find an alternate. bizarro universe on the network and cable channels?
How long can this glaring imbalance and tension between such dramatically different concentrations of thoughtfulness last, before some sort of intellectual osmosis finally pulls the intelligence into the stupid, to dilute the toxic slurry there?
They say the solution to pollution is dilution. Perhaps therein lies the answer to media mendacity.
Wish I could stay to chat further – I have to get up early…
Wow, this is great. Halfway thru.
bbl.
Take a look on Dish to see if you have Free Speech TV – if so, you can watch GritTV on broadcast too! and tell your friends!
back to lurking to take it all in…… mmmmmm
I love your new Blog, DC! ;-)
I was quoting Phil on the Dish set-up… :})
“How long can this glaring imbalance and tension between such dramatically different concentrations of thoughtfulness last, before some sort of intellectual osmosis finally pulls the intelligence into the stupid, to dilute the toxic slurry there?
They say the solution to pollution is dilution. Perhaps therein lies the answer to media mendacity.”
Wow…bring it on baby!!!!
what’s the deal with the democracy now! black out?
What a privilege to watch these 4 really intelligent people just talk.
I have DishTV…no problem with Democracy Now…what do you mean “black out”?
love, love, love your serial!
This is fantastic. Congratulations Laura and FDL, and yay for us viewers– finally something thought provoking and honest to watch.
just got to that point in the discussion. phil gives props to amy goodman and democracy now! – he does not, as i read the comment, ignore the best (imo) daily national news program.
phil:
go phil! right on!
A lot more informative than Russert’s “Press the Meat”
“You will never hear Brian Williams say that!”
lol
DCLaw1 is Chris in DC? Oh, fuck me!
I bow in humble awe.
I haven’t been able to get the video to work properly. Keeps starting and stopping. I supposedly have high-speed cable, so I don’t know why it’s doing this.
Yeah, Net Neutrality and make the FCC work for us and not the MegaCorps…! ;-)
Who is Chris in DC?
wow – this is exciting
It’s been a veeeeeeeeeeeerrry long day in GritTV production land, so it’s nice to see such a warm welcome here. THANKS Y’ALL!
Lisa G
Show Producer
What browser are you using?
Thanks so much for watching our debut. Please keep your comments coming! We are working from a small studio in New York City but from what I can see in all these posts our reach is great! Laura
How about this one?
LisaG – welcome aboard FDL! and thanks for your work to bring us this great new show!
THIS IS GREAT! Thirty minutes of in-depth discussion of issues. No screaming. No crosstalk. No commercials. WOW!
His moniker is on The Fantastic Adventures of the Republican Superfriends .
Great work, keep it up!
Michele – if it was just with the first video, we had to make one correction so there may have been a minor blip – try again and let us know.
I always thought Phil Donohue got very unlucky by happening to be a liberal talk show host just as the mainstream media was being taken over by the Right Wing propaganda machine. Suddenly it was politically incorrect to be progressive, and he was out on his ear. Glad to see his voice is finally regaining the audience it deserves.
Wow… four coherent minds all in the same room engaging in intelligent discussion.
Am I in the Twilight Zone?
DIGG it!
Thank you Twain. Watch tomorrow and see a short from Billionaires for Bush. Good chuckle. We do a new forum four days a week. Send us your ideas, please and we will discuss them. Best, Laura
More, please. Outstanding.
This is going to be a weekly thing, right? Right?
Donahue: “Not everything sucks.”
“Everything doesn’t suck!” — Phil D.
Wow, the things people say on teevee when they aren’t under the corporate thumb.
Thanks, Laura.
thank YOU. please send us your thoughts and topics for discussion. we want to hear about what’s happening in your community. best, laura
Timing is everyting.
I say we strap BillO to chair and make him watch this over and over
;~P
How shall we send you our suggestions, Laura?
Not weekly. We are on four nights a week. Send us your comments and topics for discussion. Much appreciated. Laura
btw, we’re super sorry (and a little p*ssed off) that we didn’t get to post the entire Tom Morello interview today. Our computer bonked when we tried.
But tomorrow is another day . . .
Did you guys see the SUPERDELEGATES! animation we posted earlier? I love that stuff…
Thanks.
((((((((((LisaG))))))))))
If they strapped me to a chair and made me watch billo, I’d call it torture.
That said, turn about is fair play!
Not me, thank Selise. At least, that’s where I heard it from.
we’ll be reading the threads, so you can suggest right here
if you have video, send a link to GRITtv@grittv.org
Outstanding job, and, I eagerly await your future endeavors…! 8-)
Pretty good media day.
DemocracyNow – Slavoj Zizek.
KO – Moyers.
Phil, Katrina, Laura, and of course Jane – right here in these pages.
More and better media – that’s god damned right.
Welcome indeed, Laura.
Well done, Laura and LisaG — it’s an excellent conversation on some very in-depth issues. Can’t wait to see more and more.
(Only about 2/3 through…and loving every minute of it.)
OK, thanks selise..)
Hey guys – don’t forget to DIGG!
Oh, I’d bet! But know that you are appreciated, we are truely grateful!
thx
LisaG and Laura, thanks for all of your work. Great job – look forward to sitting on the shore of the Lake feeling the Grit.
Is there a schedule anywhere?
Gee, maybe I’ll go look.
Direct to me here. I get them, read them and respond. Promise! Tell us what’s going on around you. What is the press missing?? Laura
I could not be more impressed with the debut of amptly named grit-tv! Congrats all around -
If it’s anything like I watched earlier, I can’t wait. There’s a right up front dude.
me: into oversight of our elected officials. doesn’t matter if there is a D or an R after their name.
Monday to Thursday – this week, we’ll have the shows here …
next week, we’ll have a cool new page for GritTV so you won’t miss a show!
Thanks. No reason we can’t turn this whole thing around. Keep in touch. Laura
Accountability accountability accountability.
The inside the beltway mentality that is so very paternalistic and patronizing that they (the elected officials and the TradMed) know so much more by virtue of talking to each other and reinforcing their own biases than those of us in the great unwashed.
And pretty much any topic covered by FDL, C&L, The Nation, DownWithTyranny, Pandagon, and all the other fine blogs that have allowed us to have a voice.
Let’s start in beautiful Northwest Arkansas. Sunday Opinion columnists are:

glenzilla told his readers to read dclaw1’s new blog. i just did what glenn told me to…. and as usual, it turned out to be good advice.
Thank you for watching. Laura
that was me gagging
you are doing a excellent job of keeping things moving in a good direction while letting phil and jane have time to have their say. well done!
Yes the Superdelegates animation was fantastic!
Congratulations Laura and Jane for your leadership and courage.
Pardon me… I think something is wrong with these videos!
People are actually listening to one another and exchanging information!
Not enough shouting here.
Where’s the ridicule?!
Okay… kidding ;-))
What a breath of fresh air!
THANK YOU!
Chomsky.
Fisk, when he’s in the country.

Yeah, I know. Real heavy on the truth.

Off to watch TDS.
Thanks again, Laura, Jane, Katrina, Phil and all the pups.
‘nite
Aloha, DB!
It’s in the garage. Follow me…
Now that we know that Harry Reid and Carl Levin plan hearings on the Pentagon rent-a-general scandal, how about a roundtable exclusively on that topic? Glenn Greenwald, Marcy, and Kagro X would be good, to discuss who best to call to testify and what to ask them.
I believe we’ve passed the time when subpoenas to BushCheneyCo officials will do any good; network executives and on-air talent should be “invited” to tell their stories, under oath, to our legislators. Maybe the Generals would come to the hearings, but BushCheneyCo might not let them.
.
Another great round-table topic might be “Why Does Henry Waxman Have to Do All the Oversight?” This would focus on the lack of interest on the Senate side due to the deal Joe Lieberman got for GOP support for his re-election bid after he lost the Democratic nomination.
.
I’m sure other FirePups will have great ideas, too.
hey just stunning
There is no reason we shouldn’t pass the 21st Century GI Bill that is being debated in Congress right now. It was introduced by my friend Senator Jim Webb, a Marine who served as Navy Secretary under President Ronald Reagan.. His plan has widespread support from Republicans and Democrats. It would provide every returning veteran with a real chance to afford a college education, and it would not harm retention.
I have great respect for John McCain’s service to this country and I know he loves it dearly and honors those who serve. But he is one of the few Senators of either party who oppose this bill because he thinks it’s too generous. I couldn’t disagree more. At a time when the skyrocketing cost of tuition is pricing thousands of Americans out of a college education, we should be doing everything we can to give the men and women who have risked their lives for this country the chance to pursue the American Dream
That and we get to start all over again.
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” Churchill
The revolution will not be televised because it will upset Timmeh’s breakfast.
mahalo!
When you say all the pups, you’ve no idea…If radio was a team effort — TV takes a whole league. Here are some of the names of the dedicated people who are making this program possible — so far.
Carl Ginsburg, Michael Eisenmenger, Eric Galatas, Bill Schaap, Lisa Guido, Gina Kim, Diane Shamis, David Rowley, Chase Pierson, Elizabeth Press… And that’s just a start.
You can add your name to the list!!!
What a long day. Hasta manana lakers. And THANK YOU for your support!!!
heard him today on the hedge funds driving up THE PRICE OF OIL,now trading on the London exchange to ESCAPE SRUTINY …teh good
Wow, this is just splendid.
I honestly believe there’s an audience for this that’s much larger than those lucky enough to stumble on it tonight.
I can’t be the only person completely fed up with the Sunday shows; the simple **civility** of this program, in addition to the fine minds, is very heartening.
great work!
Did someone say wine?
:)

Hi,

Great to meet you all and I look forward to getting to know you all better. Good Night, and don’t let the super delegates bite…

All you folks who helped make this happen – major hat tip.
Thank you all very much.
Great job. That kind of thing makes politics fun again. Keep it up.
Oh and by the way, I will be blogging under the name Mechanical Bull. I’ll explain later…
chase
laura – can’t tell you how much i appreciate you hanging out in the thread with us while we watch.
Kudos, Chase! I truly look forward to the future installments…! ;-)
Torture. They must not be allowed to get away with it.
Propaganda — (lying) to

Disappearing US citizens…locking people up…throwing away the key…where are they?
These are just a few of “my favorite things”….

The Lake has grown wider and deeper, it is truly incomparable…! 8-)
Heavens, one of the big things the press is missing currently is the coverage that Emptywheel has given ‘pixie dust’ — the way he uses UE to classify, declassify information without even informing other federal agencies.
It’s a powerful story, which makes me all the more dumbfounded that the press hasn’t picked up on it. It’s like reading a detective novel or a thriller; how the entire US press has missed the ‘pixie dust’ story just baffles me.
Welcome, Chase – thanks for your work!
Feith on TDS
*blech*
Great job. Very smart.
watertiger is upstairs
re: pixiedust.
when laura asked the question about what story was being missed, i was sure that was going to be jane’s answer.
Feith: 911 911 911
sos
Douglas Feith…we “misremembered” what happened in the lead up to the war…
Bite me now.
Yeah… Nice try, asshole.
Kirk, I sent you an email weeks and weeks ago… did you ever get it?
(After your ’salmon’ post…)
Bravo Chase! What a pleasure to have you all with us!
Feith doesn’t like the Netherlands…he didn’t actually say it, but I think he’s trying to weave a case as to why “he” shouldn’t ever have to visit there…he never mentions the Netherlands, but…you know….I don’t think he wants to go there anytime soon. His “book” is CYA….don’t make me go there…to the Netherlands…that is…
Stewart just kicked his sorry butt. Pathetic.
He really isn’t very smart me thinks.
I’m getting great reception (Safari 3.0.4) but I don’t see that MicheleC @35 ever got her video working. Let’s hope she just needs a refresh, but it might be nice for you to put up a spot where people can report problems…?
I wouldn’t expect you to fix the problems ;-))
But it might be nice to track and make sure everyone has good reception.
(Whoops, are my QA experiences showing…?)
Oh yeah, I don’t think he want to visit the Hague…D’OH…
Hi readerOfTeaLeaves -
I don’t think I did: the posted gmaill addy gets so much spammish traffic that I miss “real” emails.
Could you resend?
Sorry for glitch….
Absolutely. Will resend by noon tomorrow!
Well, Tommy Franks said he was “… the f***ing stupidest guy on the planet.”
You only have to listen to him for about, oh, 3-4 seconds to figure that out.
Feith…there is a word that I’m glad you’re not abiding by…it is “stifle”…thankfully, he doesn’t know what it means…heh, heh….
Bushco is screaming…”Stifle!!”

Stewart: Your book makes for “slow reading”…
Egg on your face Feith….
Stewart rocks.
Well, it is complicated on some levels, but on the sort of show that I see here it would be easy to understand, IMHO.
Heck, anyone who’s ever heard a fairy tale can follow the gist.
The hard part is realizing that it’s actually happened/happening.
But reading Marcy is like reading an ongoing thriller.
I finally know what it must have been like back in the days when people waited impatiently for their next installment of Dumas’s stories, or their latest installment of Dickens. It’s that kind of, “What on earth is going to happen next?!!” feel to it.
Same with the Siegelman story. (That is more like “Man in the Iron Mask”, though.)
Hear, Hear…

With respect to the information, I hope GRITtv will continue to explain the importance of Net Neutrality. Far too few people understand that the FCC is appointed by the Pres.
People need to start asking Obama, Hillary, McCain, and every Sen and Rep candidate about their views of NN, and — for the presidential candidates — who they plan to appoint to the FCC **and why**.
Sorry about the disorganized comment.
People need to know about Net Neutrality.
They need to know that the FCC plays a key role in it, as do courts.
They need to know that the Pres appoints members of the FCC.
They need to know that because so much web content is now legally designated as ‘information services’ the FCC no longer regulates it — and that strengthens the telco’s claims that they ‘own’ the toobz and can charge as they see fit.
This is by no means a ‘leftie’ issue. Many evangelicals, as well as cities, schools, and a wide range of people who aren’t ordinarily in agreement on issues all want NN.
But they don’t know the levers of government that are most critical in protecting NN.
And they don’t realize they need to signal candidates that they expect NN to be protected.
If the candidates don’t get ‘on the record’ on NN, it will be hard to hold them accountable later.
I think that NN would be a very good topic for GRITtv.
I think you’re functioning as a huge antibiotic for the toxic incivility and triviality that far too much of the (commercial) teevee press has become.
Ummm…”Sprout-eating”…
“” I was raised by small town folks from Kansas. With Midwestern values. Honesty and hard work and responsibility. And so this notion, somehow, that I’m some sprout-eating, Volvo driving person, when you know, of all the candidates remaining in this race – I probably– came from– the toughest circumstances,” he said.
“Not overly tough, I don’t want to overstate. But some tough circumstances– without a father in the house. And you know, raised by people who, you know, come straight out of Central Casting of small Midwestern towns. I think it just doesn’t match up with who I am.”
So you’re gonna keep wearing a tie, Williams asked?
“Sometimes I wear a tie, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I wear a flag pin, sometimes I don’t. You know, sometimes I like a burger and a beer. Sometimes a glass of wine and a steak is good.
“But this doesn’t have much to do with how I’m gonna lead the country. What does have to do with leading the country is my commitment to make sure that everybody has the same chances that somebody gave me.”
http://www.swamppolitics.com/n…..vodri.html
So!!!
I don’t personally like sprouts either, and I don’t drive a Volvo either…So!!
I don’t believe in torturing people, and letting people dehydrate to death like they did during Katrina, or attacking countries that are not a threat to my country…or being afraid to speak to leaders of countries that don’t agree with my philosophy of world dynamics…or rounding up and arresting people in droves and then finding out “later” who is “legal” and who is not….I believe in innocence until proven guilty…I believe in the 4th Amendment…I believe in the rule of law and the Constitution, and a government that doesn’t create lies and propaganda to cojole the citizens into a conflict that is not a declared war…instead, it is a vehicle to steal away our rights…one by one..it is a big fat lie.
I still don’t eat sprouts…some do..fine…I don’t…So what!!!
Mine was disorganized as well. I like your reading of the leaves tho :)
I like sprouts! So! I like drinking wheatgrass beter tho! So! :)
LOL
Okay…I’ve got it…nevermind Switchgrass….
Use sprouts.
Truly looking forward to more of this. Great job MB.
I am so appreciative of this discussion. Laura, Jane, Katrina and Phil.
Just some random fast thoughts that popped up as I was listening (was so great being stimulated toward exploration and not to distraction and frustration).
1) Phil Donahue, you spoke of rootin, tootin, shootin Pres and citizenry. After 9/11 the blood lust. I was appalled by the FIRST Iraq War and wondered where all my anti-Viet Nam baby boomer buds had gone to? Some were apologists for it. And critical mass of protest did not build during that period — arced too quickly, media out to lunch. The msm media never reported the casualty count of Iraqis … just emphasizing the low numbers of U.S. soldiers. How amoral was that? Remember the “scud stud” reporter… what’s his name… they got into the testosterone heavy analysis of weaponry. Mailer called Daddy Bush a wimp… and wham…. Iraq War #1. A setup ripe for Baby Bush and dark neocons.
2) I kept thinking of the Canadian documentary from years ago called The Corporation. It’s premise was that if a corporation is a “legal” person, the personality profile of such person would be that of a psychopath. Ruthless, narcissistic, amoral. Narrow, aggressive, self interest. So the media is owned by the corporate legal persons… a/k/a pscyhos….. the corporations/lobbyists are “investing” in our governmental officials …. And the corruption is so out front and in our faces. The agencies (up to the SCt) to monitor corruption are beholding to the said corporate psychopathic legal persons. Bottom line will always be money. Never the common good. Profits, profits, profits. Horror, horror, horror. Arthur Miller’s play ALL MY SONS. Brings home what corporate loyalty and kool-aid drinking denial means on a personal level.
3) Jane spoke of “so many fronts.” And Phil’s documentary … The awesomeness of a country that was manipulated into war by supposed patriotism, and sustained by the blackmail of supporting the troops, and yet the bottom line lack of support for the troops in terms of benefits … GI bill … etc. (Rachel Maddow today, was it RM?, spoke of cremations of fallen soldiers at a pet cemetery. GOOD GOD!) So many incredible fronts like that … all serious … but the less glamorous ones are net neutrality and telecom immunity. The consciousness raising is great among 170 million of us Jane cited, but we must be careful of sitting around in a cathartic circle playing “ain’t it awful”. People have to collectively walk the walk. I’m talking to myself now, especially. Chris Dodd brought about amazing results about FISA at one point asking people to contact Congress, stunned even him. People CAN rally. I hope Obama takes a stand on FISA and no immunity, because Sen. Rockefeller is a supporter of his and he is busy making those deals. But making those phone calls and emails, etc., does push them. The critical mass outrage that is required. But God bless the blogosphere.
4) Jane, Katrina,Phil, Laura… such ethical superheroes you are and I thank you for being calm, articulate, committed AND accessible! My tv has blown and while detoxing (and it is WONDERFUL, though I miss Olbermann, Newshour and TDS and SC show, I have turned to radio and blogosphere more heavily). My friends are impressed when a topic that has been blipped over by tv or even print MSM is mentioned, I suddenly am holding forth with passion AND detail. (well… maybe not impressed… maybe I am overdoing in my newbie state of raised consciousness.. this post exhibit A) but I am more conscious of the FAMILY of MAN (and WOMAN) … and my own failings and potential on the continuum of social responsibility. Blood may be thicker than water, but I am seeing sadly gas is thicker than blood … when it belongs to other American citizens or other citizens of other countries. But the gas-personalized-now crisis for citizens, is pushing through their apathy or resigned numbness or narcissism. We need to focus on values in all dimensions! (I was an Edwards supporter and believed he would have gone after corruption.)
Okay… I see I am out of synch with the concise, easy rhythm of this wonderful blogsite… but wanted to share my 2 cents (50 cents) FWIW!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
My husband and I watched this last night. Very insightful, thoughtful, factual. Would love to see more of this type of programming and guests on TV. People don’t know what they’re missing.
This is great. Thanks! A bit late to the discussion, but glad to have watched this morning. I’m looking forward to more.
As usual, I am a day late and a dollar short to the discussion but want to say how much I liked the forum with Jane, Katrina, Phil, and Laura. I want more more more of this. Also curious as to how Grit TV is funded. I will reread on how to find it and tell others about it. I agree totally about taking back the airways from the corporations…couldn’t we have a separate (several) channels of news only? I never look at Fox, sometimes at CNN, a lot at MsNBC…Olberman mostly, but find the horse race campaign reporting discouraging even there. Net neutrality I don’t understand..is that one of the euphemistic titles we have seen so much of lately (Patriot Act, etc.)? that means the opposite of what it indicates. Need more information on that issue. Also, I hope that Laura and company reads the entire comments section even after they have left us…we’re not all quick on the draw to respond. Once again, thanks.
