Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09: NW Chicago and near north suburbs) is a rising force in the House of Representatives. She is a chief deputy whip, sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee, and describes her top priority in Congress to be "providing universal healthcare coverage for all Americans." She is also a member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, and is a founding member of the Out of Iraq caucus.
For the past seven years, Jan has hosted a fundraiser called "The Ultimate Women’s Power Lunch" for her campaign. Friday, at this year’s UWPL, the featured Guest of Honor was FDL favorite and former CIA operative Valerie Plame, but also prominent at the event was Michelle Obama. Both spoke to the crowd of over 1800 folks, all rabid to see Jan continue her work in Congress and to see Bush go back to his true calling as a tireless clearer of brush.
For those who haven’t been following things closely, Valerie and her husband Joe Wilson have both been longtime major Hilary Clinton supporters. Just the other day, the Clinton campaign unveiled a new ad with the two of them, promoting Hillary as the candidate best suited to bring an end to the war in Iraq.
I’m going to go out on a limb here, and suggest that Michelle might beg to differ.
Knowing that both were going to be at this UWPL event Friday, I turned to the Chicago media, to hear about the fireworks.
*crickets*
No fireworks, no pie fighting, no poo-flinging, nothing. One Chicago television station headlines their story on the event "Michelle Obama, Ex-Spy Plame Attend Chicago Event."
*yawn*
Well, not nothing, exactly.
Jan is a big Obama supporter, yet she invited Valerie to headline her fundraiser. Valerie is a big Clinton supporter, and yet she came to this event knowing Jan’s choice of presidential candidates is not her choice. Michelle is a big Obama supporter, and yet she came to this event knowing that Valerie was the featured headliner.
While strongly pushing their own presidential candidates, Valerie and Michelle showed that it’s possible for presidential partisans work together to support down-ticket races and the party as a whole.
You read that right. They proved that surrogates for competing campaigns can indeed play nice and work well with each other, even when the other one supports a candidate who obviously sucks.
It’d be kind of nice if some of the other surrogates — or the two presidential candidates themselves — could do the same.

Post for you at end of previous thread re: Obama aid quitting.
I was lucky to see Valerie Plame Wilson speak in Athens, GA. She’s a gracious, funny, principled lady. This doesn’t surprise me in the least. I’m also sure she’ll work for Obama if he’s the nominee.
Kind of stunning, isn’t it?
What was the event at which you saw her?
nah
I think the Party as a whole realizes thay should just cedee the beer-swilling bigot vote and has decided to focus on common values.
but then I tend to be optimistic on Sunday afternoons
Obama/Wilson 08
Hillary’s going to play out the string- and why not- it’s the only way she can recover the cash she lent the campaign- and just in Case Obama falls on his face, she’d like to be in a position so that the supers could give her the nod…
She doesn’t need any harsh rhetoric at this point to accomplish her twin goals.
which one?
Barry, Michelle, Joe or Valerie
I cannot see how the Democratic Party could benefit from West Virginia and Kentucky overwhelmingly choosing a former candidate. Which is the likely outcome if Hillary were to drop out today.
From your lips to her ears.
(And Howard Wolfson’s, and Terry McC, and . . .)
it’s long past time to close ranks and give the Republicans a first class thrashing.
This is all over- unless Obama’s numbers in Ohio vs McBush nose dive seriously.
At the moment- he’s behind McBush by a point or so and Hillary’s beating McBush by six or so- that’s not enough to scare the superdelegates..If Obama falls behind by double digits, that would scare em- but I don’t see anything that is likely to make that happen.
How ’bout Brian (to help with the CA vote)Seriously, IMHO Obama’s VP choice (and that individual’s role as VP) would best be handled on the basis of who would be the strongest campaign partner, and then relegating that person to a non-policy pet cause and minor State funerals and weddings (and the daily inquiry as to the President’s health)
Qualified persons should be reserved for Cabinet positions (which serve ‘at the pleasure of the President”)
The Executive branch is best led by one strong Executive with a strong cabinet of individuals with core competency in their area.
Hi Peterr.
Civility instead of civil war.
I like it.
i’m right on your heels, pant pant.
Let’s go!!!
you an’ me, baby …..
((( fahrender )))
How’s it goin’, eh ?
Dan Quayle is the last of that breed of VP. Neither the Democrats nor the GOP will go back to that again — not for a long while.
plus more than a few thousand others…
an eclectic bunch, reportedly…

what the hey. we’ve got a big tent, eh?!
All of us.
Hmmmm, Joe Wilson as VP. That’s not a bad idea. He’s definitely a stand up guy, more integrity/credibility than all the Rethugs combined, knows foreign policy, and isn’t chasing wealth or power. Vell..ly intell..lesting.
I saw John Edwards on Morning Joe Friday and today with Bob Schiefer (Sp?) and I thought, Please Lord, let it be Obama/Edwards as the ticket. Can you imagine Barack, John, Michelle and Elizabeth going around the world, showing the best that is America ?
i’m doing OK but i’ve been absolutely snowed with work. i’m going at it seven days a week and i’m still not catching up.
That’s as likely as Hillary being VP … after all the vitriol they’ve thrown at BO …
No “snow” jokes”, please … *g* … we got so much this winter, we deserve a pass for the next two years …
But you have to admit that the idea of watching Joe walk into Dick Cheney’s office on January 20th would be a sight to behold.
(As would watching the wingnut heads explode between now and then.)
On This Week with Georgie, they kept bringing up Ted Strickland of Ohio. I know they said he was Governor of Ohio, but who is he and is he any good?
My dream -
Shrub and Darth arrested at the completion of the inauguration ceremony and hauled off to the same jail where they’ve held Dr Sami al-Arian for the last two years. Bail denied for national security reasons.
LOL … would be great … I used to think HRC winning the Presidency would also make Bennett & Co spontaneously combust … as would BO winning in November.
I don’t disagree with that, but it should be possible to continue the campaign without shoving crowbars into every party fault line and jumping up and down on them. So far, every primary has been followed by statements which exacerbate problems.
lukewarm here, but can’t put my finger on why exactly.
too much like a nice grampa?
want more zing and zip?
suspect he’s not pro-choice?
Do I sound like yer typical clueless voter yet? Heck, honestly, he was and is a Democrat, so he got my vote. This IS Ohio, and we’re desperate.
p.s., I have serious misgivings that Hill could carry OH if our primary was run right now. I run into more & more people these days who, aftering absorbing a bit more info., really are impressed by both Barack AND Michelle. I don’t think rush’s brand is quite the hot item it was early on. People seem cranky &/or embarrassed at all things puggian. Wheeee.
I wouldn’t bet on BO choosing anyone George, Timmeh or any other talking head endorses …
I don’t think that’s true at all. Are you old enough to remember the animosity between JFK and LBJ? That was almost palpable. Besides, I think if truth were told, John Edwards probably supports Obama, even if Elizabeth doesn’t. What went on between them was simply a campaign. They’re not life enemies. They’re soon to be allies.
Here’s SNL’s intro from last night:
Hillary
I’ll have a plate of what you ordered, with a side of humiliation for a select few at that table over in the dark corner.
I’m not understanding what I said that you disagree with … I believe that BO will not choose Wilson or Hillary and I hope that he chooses Edwards, the four of them have a great deal in common and will be phenomenal on the World stage …
My sense, though, is that they will be allies in separate branches of the government come January 20th. If Hillary isn’t the nominee, I can’t see her taking the #2 slot. Instead, she’ll be trying to build on her connections and work toward being Majority Leader of the Senate — if not in 2009, then down the road.
She’s got a great sense of how the Senate works, and also the Executive Branch. A majority leader needs to know both in order to be effective, and she could really make a mark in that role.
Thank heaven BO has a good head on his shoulders, and surely will file all their recommendations appropriately as he comes down to the wire. ;->
“File 13″ … *g*
about 2 seconds to get over it.
so clueless here, had to google it. excellent! *g*
It’s great that these ladies can put differences aside and work together toward the bigger picture. I’d hope that Joe Wilson could do the same with presidential candidate Obama. So far, I haven’t cared much for the framing he’s used in his blog postings attacking Obama.

Clinton would not accept the VP spot and I really don’t think she’s under any consideration by the Obama camp. I don’t know what Obama supporters would think about it but Clinton represents the old party establishment (read DLC dominated) and Obama represents a diametrically opposed position. They’re both corporatists but that’s where electing more and better Dems to Congress comes into play. An anti-corporate Congress can affect change more readily than an anti-corporate prez and corporatist Congress. And the change won’t occur this time around. Perhaps in another 2 or 3 Congressional election cycles, perhaps longer. No instant gratification in this arena.
Must go get something useful done around here. Hate to leave the good company. Thanks folks. Tis a good place to be, this Lake. ;->
Off for the weekly visit to the natural foods store. Later.
For some odd reason, I misconstrued the above statement to be referring to the Edwards instead of a reference to Joe Wilson as VP candidate. I just went back and checked to see where I went wrong and found your statement that you wish for an Obama/Edwards ticket. That would work for me, too.
That was part of why I was surprised — delightfully so — at how the UWPL seems to have gone.
Of course, as Mrs Peterr might say, “the opinions and style of one partner do not necessarily reflect those of the other partner.”
Truth be told, I still prefer Dodd in that role!
It would be an embarrassment of riches, Barack, John, Michelle & Elizabeth in the White House …
Obama may want to pick a veep candidate who can bring in a state that might otherwise go to McBush…Dem governor in a swing state would fit the bill.
Warner from Va.?
Oh, I can think of several folks (including Dodd) that I’d like to see in that role ahead of Hillary. I’m just saying that from her perspective, that might be a more satisfying “next step” to shoot for in her political career instead of VP.
If I had God’s Ear, I would wish for Hillary to be on the Supreme Court along with an expanded bench to counter Roberts & Co.
Longtime Obama supporter Gov Kathleen Sebelius in KS is getting a lot of local buzz in KS and also over here in MO. She also just faced down the GOP over building more coalburning power plants, pushing instead for more wind, solar, and other alternative energy proposals.
A Dem governor from KS, with a strong record on the environment and other issues might look very attractive to Obama — and the fact that this KS governor is also woman would not hurt things either.
I don’t think that should be the prerequisite for a Veep nominee … a full court press by the entire Dem party would guarantee the win in November …
about 18 months ago i said that Hillary would do well to just stay in the Senate and build her power base there. she hadn’t declared at that point and it seemed like she might take a pass. i have been ready to back her for most of the time since then, that is until some of the shenanigans of the past few months, Mark Penn, and so forth. Hillary has all of the skills and she’s quite intelligent. more and more though i’m getting Nixon flashbacks …….
Nixon flashbacks?
*light bulb going on*
Now I understand why I think of Pat Buchanan when I see Mark Penn’s face on TV.
I know it’s something most folks don’t like to think about but I do believe Obama is going to need someone with some foreign policy background.
And one of the arguments against having Senator Clinton on the ticket is also applicable with Gov Sebelius, i.e., that might be too much change at once.
My $.02
My sentiments exactly … if Bill was the first “Black” President, Obama will be the first “Feminine” President in that he extols the virtues that are the natural strengths of women, at least as this humble meditation teacher see them … which leads me to this … wishing all you Moms “A Happy Mothers’ Day”.
I have been blessed to know many who did not have children but were still excellent Moms to those kids who were around …
Good points. The foreign policy piece would likely rule out any governor except Richardson — but if Obama wants to push the “we’ve got to change Washington” theme, choosing a beltway insider would not help much.
Our Governor Janet Napolitano has also been mentioned as a potential running mate. And Terry Goddard, former Phoenix Mayor, is also the AG in AZ. He would also be a good choice for AG, as would Janet. Although, we’d really miss either one here, and heaven forbid both were called upon to move to DC at the same time. We wouldn’t have anyone left here!
Unfortunately, even choosing “outsiders” usually winds up with one of two occurences – either the outsiders get corrupted by the insiders (think the Clintons or Reagan et al), which seems to be the most common occurrence, or the outsider gets dragged through the mud and out the door after one term (Jimmy Carter anyone?).
Either way, outsiders don’t last long in DeeCee.
OK boys and girls get your shovels out and Digg this post for Peterr!
Speaking of which, did you see Chris Dodd wish Tim Russert a happy Mother’s Day. You talk about dead silence on the screen! Russert didn’t seem to know what to say. That’s right! It caught Russert speechless! I had to wonder if it was deliberate! After all, don’t we all really think Russert is a Mother!
Heyyy ….
That made my day.
I mean, Obama/Wilson ‘08.
Mmmm ….
She gave the rebuttal to Bush’s State of the Union. She may be a good Governor, but she came off a poor speaker and lukewarm communicator. I don’t think she would be very good on the campaign trail.
ROFL
It is too early to count Clinton out as VP. It will depend on how the political landscape looks in August.
If it looks like a blowout win, then she won’t be seriously considered. If it is close and he still hasn’t connected with her base, then she will be seriously considered.
Also, don’t forget about the possibility of a black swan.
I think another factor is if Hillary withdraws it opens the way for a major compromise regarding the Michigan and Florida delegations. If she stays in the race until the Convention these delegations are very likely going to be held out. But if she withdraws the delegates are then “released”. While they could issue a dissenting vote for Clinton, they are no longer “pledged” to her…andmany may actually vote for Obama because a) he supported the compromise reached by the Michigan Party leadership that would have brought them in EVEN with a majority pledged to Clinton, and b) Clinton opposed that compromise, embarassing her own supporters in the Michigan Democratic party and continuing the threat that they may not participate in the Convention.
Clinton will increasingly be trapped by this issue. I wouldn’t be surprised that even if the seating of the delegation is approved by the rules Committee that the committed delegates may not vote for her. She’s now the one blocking the participation of the Michigan delegation.
Both Michigan and Florida can participate if Hillary steps down.
Michele Obama is a pain in the ass. She acts like the world owes her a living and that she is doing everyone a favor by even showing up. Complaining that they are “like everybody else” when it comes to finances, while whining that dance, gymnastics and piano lessons for “her girls” costs $10,000 a year and puts a big bite into their budget, is just laugh out loud ridiculous. As far as I can tell he has no core values to speak of but I think she has an agenda. If so, watch out.
