Last Monday I did a piece on how the AP has joined the local media in the Twin Cities in enabling a certain paid Republican operative and blogger named Michael Brodkorb, treating him as respectfully as they do Matt Drudge, even though (like Drudge) he’s known for spewing bogosities.
And like the national press, the Twin Cities press isn’t as forelock-tuggingly deferent to non-conservative bloggers; the same media that cites Brodkorb by name as an honest and "independent" source seem to suffer memory lapses where the contributions of lefty bloggers are concerned.
For example: Last week, a local lefty blogger attended a GOP presscon. The presscon was held to hand out the latest Al-Franken-bashing talking points (the first versions of which, mentioned in my earlier post, were being pushed by Brodkorb) to the ever-compliant local media. The blogger tried questioning Minnesota Republican Party Chair Ron Carey about the party’s FEC fines and other nasty things. However, the StarTribune did its darnedest not to use the guy’s name, even though his question gave Strib scribes Pat Doyle and Dan Browning a page B1 (and teased on the front page) story in its May 8, 2008 edition:
A left-leaning blogger tried to ask Carey about the party’s FEC reports at a news conference the GOP called last week to highlight Franken’s problems. Carey dismissed him, saying the press briefing “is something for our credentialed media here.”
Carey did not respond this week to Star Tribune requests for an interview about the FEC filings.
“Just like any political entity, the Republican Party of Minnesota continues to work with the FEC to make certain our filings are in compliance,” party spokesman Mark Drake said in an e-mail Tuesday.
For the record, Two-Putt Tommy is the blogger in question. Here’s the question he wanted to ask Ron Carey:
“Mr. Chairman, under your stewardship, the MN GOP has paid fines to the FEC going back to 2001, and there are questions from within your own party whether GOP employee retirement money was misappropriated, not to mention allegations of tax evasion. How do you respond to charges that you are trying to hold Franken’s campaign to standards you can’t keep?”
The lack of name-checking for Two-Putt Tommy wasn’t the only oddity about the Strib’s story. The account of Two-Putt’s interaction with Carey was also not quite right. Here’s Tommy’s version of events:
So, I started off: “Mr. Chairman, under….” and was immediately cut off by republiCon Ron, who essentially said “Tom, this is for traditional media, I’m not answering your question.”
“Mr. Chairman, you’re not taking questions from bloggers?”
“I’ll talk to you afterwards, Tom”.
And, of course, republiCon Ron didn’t. I waited patiently in the back of the room for Ron to work his way there. Alas, he didn’t – he schmoozed some reporters in the front, and out the door he went.
So, I followed! All the way over to the Capital Press Rooms. Ron and Mark Drake were a little surprised to see me there, Mark asked me why I was there. So, I told him – Ron said he’d answer my question later, so I was there to ask it! Mark told me to call him later, and ask him, and he’d get my question answered. Mark wrote down the number for me to call. And after I talked to members of the “traditional media” about the day’s non-event, I did call – but got no answer. I called yesterday, too. This time, I got a gentleman who told me Mark was in, and asked my name. I told him, and in a few moments was told Mark wasn’t available – would I like to leave a voice message?
So, I did. I gave Mark my phone number and e-mail address, and asked Mark to e-mail me – I’d rather put the question in writing so there would be no miscommunication as to the question or the response.
And I am NOT surprised Mark hasn’t gotten back to me.
Fascinating, isn’t it?
Meanwhile, Two-Putt’s efforts have singlehandedly pivoted the story from the GOP-approved "throw it against the wall and see what sticks" accusations against Franken to the local Republican Party’s horrendous financial shenanigans. Anyone who still thinks after seven years of George W. Bush that the Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility needs to check this out from the Two-Putter:
Here’s what the Star Tribune found:
- “The difficulties became apparent early last year when the party amended 52 disclosures to the FEC. The revisions took place in the wake of staff resignations and complaints that the party misused employee retirement money, improperly reported its finances, and retaliated against staff who reported the problems.
Since then, the FEC has repeatedly demanded that the party reconcile conflicting financial reports.”WOW!!! 52 amended reports??!? Hold on; as they say on TV infomercials “But, wait! That’s not all!!!”
- “• The FEC questioned: An amended year-end report in 2006 that disclosed $1.4 million in transfers from a non-federal campaign account to a federal account. The agency suggested that the state GOP violated restrictions on such transfers and on using the non-federal funds to pay interest on a loan owed by the federal account.
• The GOP responded: It said it was involved in a “thorough review” of its finances and expected to file corrections. It also said it corrected the loan problem.”
Holy Smokescreen, Norm!!! Thats 1.4 MILLION smackers, we’re talkin’ ’bout!!! But, did the MN GOP “correct(ed) the loan problem”?!?? Did Ron Carey’s MN GOP file the corrected report?
Stay tuned; we’ll find out!
Personally, I can’t wait. Go get ‘em, Tommy! (Oh, and someone remind Pat Doyle and Dan Browning who he is, OK?)

So, PW!
PW! Do you have Republican VooDoo Dolls ready yet?
hurrah for PW.
Aloha, PW and ya’ll!
C Tut!
PW!
So, do you have these “reporters’” contact info so we can spotlight this to ‘em–and their editor? Since we could also give ‘em kudos for the reporting they _did_ do? They’re probably on the MN-GOP sh** list now for reporting actual (unflattering)news instead of regurgitating talking points.
And how did they know what Mr. Putt wanted to ask if he didn’t get a chance in public.
Love it. Buy off all the “traditional journalists” and “credentialed reporters” so they don’t ask the tough questions and then blow off those outside the “club”. Wankers.
Anyone asked DarkBlack to do a Thug-with-pants-on-fire Photoshop-o-Rama? Not that this one isn’t good…

Quote without comment:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Associated Press has learned that the Pentagon is recommending changes in the handling of troops’ remains. The change comes after it was revealed that crematoriums contracted by the military are used for both human and animal cremations.
A military official says there have been no instances or charges that human and pet remains were mixed. But officials are now recommending that troops’ remains be sent on to their local funeral homes for cremation in order to avoid any appearance of a problem.
The Dover Air Force Base Port Mortuary, where troops’ remains arrive from the battlefield, does not have its own crematorium, so it contracts with two funeral homes for the cremations.

Bingo! KO just mentioned the fact that Joe Liarman is backing McCain to Harry Reid in an interview. So he asked Harry point blank “Is there anything that Joe could do that would cause you to take away his leadership position?” Harry said of course, but blah, blah, blah.

One hardly knows what to say about it—some family may have a doberman or something over their fireplace—wonder who had the contract? Halliburton?
Sorry for the delay but I had a distinct lack of Cds… Since corrected! Let me know when you get it.
Another reason to claim the troops are nothing more than Bush McCheneys robber baron “pet project” and why they hide the coffins.
alas, no – I wile away countless non-productive hours at work instead…

I’m just wondering why forwarding the remains to local funeral homes wasn’t already SOP. Well…not really…Crony Capitalism Uber Alles and the Cronies must get ALLLLL the business. Mwahaha, mwahaha, mwahahahahahaha!
Wonder if it’s usual for funeral homes to handle both humans and (presumably) pets. Hope the ones Dover was using got “outed” so their other customers can ask some pointed questions.

Funeral Homes normally don’t do cremation—remains are sent to crematoria that are often in rural areas.
Wow, KO is gonna have Pat Tillman’s mother on! How do you explain away Three Shots to the Forehead…? 8-(
Yep. That was such a good story that Attaturk did a post on it this morning
Fixed it. IIRC, they’re also hiding the coffins because they learned at least one lesson from (nightly news coverage of) Vietnam. As usual for neo-cons, it wasn’t the lesson a decent human being would have learned.

Must go back and re-read bmaz @ emptywheel posting on EFF’s victory getting access to secret wiretapping and NSL docs. So’s I don’t forget there’s good news out there sometimes.
McClatchy chimes in too:
I wonder what the back story is and who found out and how.
Keith is also going to have Mort Sahl on. I haven’t seen him in years!
Yes- and it would also be interesting to find out who negotiated the contract, and when, and under what conditions and supervision, and how much kick back is involved…
If yer in the military—ya wanna be in PROCUREMENT.
Ah. Then it could easily be common for those facilities to handle both? Anyway…still doesn’t seem quite right. ‘Course these Powers That Be don’t ever do the right thing until caught and called out in public.
FunnyD
Sounds as if the Pentagon was scrambling to beat someone else to the press.
I don’t think so- but I don’t know for sure.
i dunno, when i go i wanna be cremated.
What does it matters what your little bone bits get mixed into anyways?
‘K Pups, keep playin’ nice, except with Trolls and neo-cons. Be back in 20min. By which time there will be a new thread…

Well, not much I suppose- but some families would be confused to discover that the remains of their loved one are in an Urn marked “Fido”.
My guess is that it is common. I don’t see the problem with it myself. We’re all animals.
yeah, your right. ultimately it’s about the families. Even tho i wouldn’t mind rolling around with fido.
We may think that way, but my guess is that lots of military families would not exactly think the way we do.
Likely not.

Speaking of all of being animals — and yes we are, but some are road kill and some have mortgages and I’m not saying which ones are smarter – I’m eating meatloaf and guess who has his head in my lap waiting patiently for a bite , or two?
wapo has more:
The Dover Air Force Base Port Mortuary, where all troops’ remains arrive from the battlefield, does not have its own crematorium, so it contracts with two funeral homes for the cremations: Torbert Funeral Chapel and Pippens Funeral Home.
Pippens’ crematorium is located at the funeral home and is used only for human remains, while Torbert’s has incinerators for both human and animal remains.
While most facilities don’t advertise the fact that they handle both human and animal remains, there is a sign near the Torbert crematory advertising the “Friends Forever Pet Cremation Service.”
Officials said there are three incinerators at the Torbert facility, and two are used for humans, while one is used for pets. The human and pet facilities are separated by about 20 feet.
Air Force Lt. Gen. Frank Klotz, Air Force staff director, told Pentagon reporters that it is not uncommon for crematoriums to provide both services.
Klotz said the issue came to light Friday when an officer who works in the Pentagon went to Dover to pay respects to a fallen comrade who was being cremated. The soldier noticed the pet cremations sign, and was concerned about the fact that the facility handled both human and animal remains.
The officer alerted senior officials at the Pentagon, who notified Capitol Hill and quickly pulled together the policy changes.
Bill Torbert, president of Torbert Funeral Chapel, said a representative from Dover Air Force Base visited a crematory run by his company earlier this week, but was satisfied there was nothing amiss.
Torbert said the human and pet crematories are in adjoining buildings on the same property but have separate entrances. A sign advertising pet cremation services is in front of the Friends Forever office, but there are no signs on the building housing the human crematory facilities, which Torbert said are not used for cremation of pets.
“We do a lot of work with the military,” he said. “We service them very well.”
“We service them well”
That’s what Halliburton said after fuckin the american public one more time.

ah, come on. we’re all groan-ups here… :~)
Cremation is so yesterday. In today’s St. Paul paper, we learned about the following emerging alternative:
No, no,,,,,NO!
dayum, call me old fashion, but i’d rather be fertalizer for some nice variety :)
I’m satisfied with their description of their services and facilities. Barring hard evidence that remains are mixed it’s a non-issue for me.
There’s no way for me to tell if the cremains of my tigers are really of that particular animal. They’re each in an urn with their name on it and I’m happy with that. I can only speak for myself.
I’ll pass, thank you. Right out of “Tales From the Crypt.”
Good gawd. The equipment, the hospitals, the barracks, and the crematoriums.
A definite “ewwwww.”
Hey, PW, I have the dubious distinction of living the same neighborhood as Governor Veto (Tim Pawlenty, who’s being touted as a possible McPain running mate) AND the aforementioned Michael Brodkorb. Believe me when I say I lock my car doors whilst driving in the ‘hood.
Watch carefully. There’s no doubt some kinky something happening. I think it’s a pretty standard pact they have to sign before getting the blessing of the party.
Death is big business. Numerous books have been written on the subject.
The number of deceased military personnel being cremated upon return is a very small percentage of the total number being returned, which is in itself criminal. War is not about glory, it’s about killing.
Thousands of people die here every day. That involves hospitals, equipment, facilities, the whole nine yards.
We all die. It is part of the wheel of life.
Good letter in the Strib on this…
