The YouTube at left is the original CNN attempt at "debunking" some of the idiotic Obama e-mail smears -- my favorite part is Howie Kurtz saying that the way the media works these days is to run with unsourced internet smear rumors, and then backtrack to determine their veracity after the information is already "out there." Journamalism at its finest, eh?
McClatchy shows how this ought to be done, getting to the heart of who is fronting out the inaccurate smear e-mails by doing some real, live journalism:
Some things about Barack Obama rub some voters the wrong way.
"We don't need a Muslim," said Jannay Smith, a retiree from Kokomo, Ind. "Who's to say if he gets in there what he'll do?"
Added Steve Shallenberger, a Kokomo electrician: "He's just calling himself a Christian because he knows that's what we in Indiana want to hear."
Then there's Sherry Richey, also from Kokomo: "He wouldn't put his hand on the Bible; he wanted the Quran. He won't put his hand over his heart during the anthem or say the Pledge of Allegiance. He's too un-American."
All of these slurs on Obama are categorically untrue....
One practitioner in Virginia, who hates Obama like a dog hates cats, led a reporter through his efforts. Because the man is a retired clandestine CIA officer, identifying him could endanger officers or operations that remain classified, so McClatchy will not reveal his name.
In late 2006, convinced that an Obama presidency would be disastrous for America, he decided to start an anti-Obama operation. He combed the public record on Obama. He used a couple of allies and informants — half-jokingly dubbing his group "The Crusaders" — to learn about Obama's background, especially his Africa connection and how he came to be the editor of the Harvard Law Review.
He assembled a dossier on Obama, including allegations that Obama attended a madrassa, or Islamic religious school, in his youth in Indonesia.
Then the retired spook tried to get Israeli intelligence officials interested in his Obama dossier. They weren't, to his chagrin. He also shopped it to some foreign reporters. Again, no luck.
He wound up posting some of it on a blog — and where it went from there in the vast world of cyberspace is anybody's guess.
But a few months after the man began his work, the allegation that Obama was educated in a madrassa appeared in an anonymous article in Insight Magazine, an online publication of the Unification Church, in January 2007. It also claimed that Clinton operatives had dug up the information. The article was cited by several conservative commentators, including on Fox News, before it was debunked.
The piece had the markings of what's called a "false-flag" operation: Make a covert operation appear to be the work of another party. And, like many misinformation campaigns, it "takes what you might believe without any factual basis and seen circulating around ...a lot of speculation spun into a story," said Vince Cannistraro, a former CIA official.
The GOP e-mail folks have been practicing the art of lying, false flag rumor-mongering for quite some time. This is not anything new. But their level of success this time has as much to do with the Fox News willingness to front out their e-mail rumors on a larger media platform without bothering to fact check, and the rest of the media's willingness to then go along with it because it's "out there."
Here's a thought: double check it yourself BEFORE you print or report it. Or would that be too close to journalism for comfort?

go obama!
along those lines of decieving the viewers for the sake of the administration’s talking points, everyone has to read glenzilla
amazing
Or, have all the ‘fact checkers’ been put out of work too?
And the sequel, Zombies Attack: Night of the Living Lie.
This series has already grown old.
Christy:
Here’s a thought: double check it yourself BEFORE you print or report it.
Might it be that the corporate press has laid-off all of the Fact Checkers, and now all they have are the empty headed, but beuuutiful, people who can just barely read the prompters?
Oh, but they all have their empty headed opinions about Everything.
My hope is that the same tactics do not work because the voters realize that they have been sold down the river by George W. Bush and friends.
What Christy?
You mean whatever is on Drudge isn’t the truth?
I thought he was supposed to be the “new paradigm” for truth in reporting. /s
People are saying that John McCain is a cats-paw of the anti-Christian Unification Church.
demi - I think part of this is that the medium has to value facts and truth. When they just pick up junk like this and run with it, it means that facts and truth have no value for them and they believe(and rightly so, now) that the public doesn’t know the difference and will swallow whatever is spooned out. So, I’m sure that the whole job title of ‘fact checker’ is seen as obsolete as a buggy whip ferule winder or some such.
The four local Anchorage AM Radio hate mongers are running Barack HUSSEIN Obama stuff all the time, interspersed with the same old Islam is a religion of hate message. All the time, except when thy let up, and bring back Rev. Wright. It is getting way beyond boring. It never was supposed to be subliminal, was it….?
Gotta go shine my American flag lapel pin, pups.
Zombies of the GOP, a new Horror Movie!! The Horrendous Lies and Un-Dying Un-Truths from producers of George Bush Savior of the World!!
I owe you a soda, beverage of your choice.
Great minds, or just cynical ones?
Great minds, demi - we only have great minds here –(which reminds me or a terribly OT story: I once went to Dr. Konstantine Frank’s vineyard in the Finger Lakes and I got to talk to him and someone in our group asked him, “What kind of grapes do you grow here?” And he said, “Only excellent grapes - if they aren’t here, they aren’t excellent.”)
Yes and fact checking would take time.
Now that we have the 24 hour new channels, any one station doesn’t want to get scooped by another channel, so, they run with it.
Notice how Everything is Breaking News now?
Back when they prepared all day for the nightly news, it was not this case.
Yep - ‘film at 11′ used to mean something.

These attacks work for low information voters because they grab even a 30%ERS ATTENTION. To bad people are paying attention now and after 7 years of excuses and scapegoating they aren’t believing the GOP’s lines.
You would think that with the president at 30% or less the GOP would investigate why that is and change something.
It’s the
GlobalWar on Obama. They are using BS organized propaganda against a citizen, and if the CIA or any other agency is somehow participating in this and providing talking points both to the media and in email schemes…is it being ordered by the Decider? Is Obama a threat to national security because W’s pixie dust might say he is? Is W going to make sure that his Republican candidate puppet is put into power, because he is the Decider??? He’s already said that the next President will be a Republican. Is that a possibility…that they are going after him that way???
I put nothing past them.
Please make no mistake, that is all that journalism is on tv. Entertainers that get all their news by earphone or on the computer screen in front of them. It is bullshit, and it is not news. It is “entertainment” It is all it ever has been. Remember, Edward R. Murrow was imitated because he was king, and the drama is what the pretender to his crown saw. The network saw ratings. So they added music and drama to the news reader and it was just a new kind of entertainment.
Expect nothing but garbage from your TV, that is what it is made for, don’t look at it like something that it is not, remember, it is there to deceive you! If we ever forget that, we will become……… alas, too late.
The way journamalism is going, slouching down a muddy slope, Matt Drudge will soon get a MacPulitzer.
Dang Alki Beach Seattle 100 ft from any buildings seems to have a better net connection than I got at home Beacon Hill and I’m paying for my home connection.
1932….just sayin
Can we make that a WinPulit or something?
It’s all those coffee houses at Alki.
You know, I was just treated to about 20 minutes of Hulk Hogan apologizing/explaining his son’s DUI at a hearing or something.
And then something about a sink hole in Texas. I would care if I lived in Texas…but i don’t.
This was news I really couldn’t use.
Sun Glare is harsh though even with shades!
Hey, at least here at the Lake, when someone shares a bit of unsourced news, invariably someone else will say, Got A Link for that?
Right On, pups.
They showed a green puppy too.
Yes.
This has been another edition . . .
Digg this
The reason they don’t need fact checkers today is that “reporting” no longer involves any real journalism. They merely repeat (usually with attribution, but not always) the smear and then go find some talking head to provide a “reaction” to this “revelation”. The worst aspect is that on the Obama-muslim thing they allowed this to go on a very long time without even resorting to their usual “balance” of setting up the “he said, she said” shoutfest by bringing in a talking head who would be expected to refute it. Come to think of it, it seems like the last time I remember the media acting this way was–the ol’ swift boat play.
I don’t either. But I think more and more people have HAD it with the lies and manipulation. I think the smear machine will be a little less effective, but I do believe the polls and vote counting will be rigged.
It will have to be a landslide of mythical proportions to defeat the neo-cons. imho.
Yeah, it’s amazing to me, I’ll go to cnn.com to skim headlines, and it’s all a bunch of LOCAL news.
They troll for the most sensational local news they can find, and run with that, while ignoring all that violence in Iraq.
Prolly why so many commenters here stick to C-Span.
???
I mean, if we waited for a specific news channel for only Real Important, and fact-checked stories, we’d be in real trouble. Oh, yeah…
a green puppy? wow, that IS news! :P
oh, just slap my face and call me trouble!
“GOP has previously undisclosed information about HRC” per MSNBC crawler…WTF…see it’s probably that Peter Paul thing they are trying to stir up. Interesting, they are trying for a twofer…
Let’s give them McKingofAmericaMessiahMoon and McLandscandal and McKeptman and McLobby…
No, Let’s give them Bushco spying, torturing, warmongering war criminals.
I wonder what they would say if Muslims were saying those things about us.
McClatchy has been doing some good stuff, journalistically speaking. Now if only it were a bit more contagious.
No, Let’s give them Bushco spying, torturing, warmongering war criminals.
gross profiteers,treasury raiders
I’m sure some of them are. A certain percentage of practitioners of all religions based upon superstitions and myths end up being haters. It is inevitable.
I’m not surprised to see the Unification Church linked to this. According to many well-researched sources, they have front groups for everything. I wonder how real Christians feel about buying into the “Messiah”’s efforts?
hey Christy and Firedogs -
McClatchy is hemorraghing revenue faster and at a higher percentage rate than any other major - been on my mind a lot lately as to how it will play out - no strong online presence to date and wonder what we in the reality based community can do for them - we need these people
After reading this story about Moon’s “coronation” I really think our Congress needs a serious intervention. I suggest we send buses to take them to places like the gas station, grocery store, an elementary school, a real community based church, a homeless shelter, etc.
I goofed - meant to say Josh Marshall has new son! Happy news always welcome. And I’m having my own arguments with low info family but I am finding them somewhat receptive. Hope Obama is able to pull this off.

Old story. tbogg’s Beckham and a “green period”!
I was confronted with the “refusal to put hand over heart” meme a couple of weeks ago. The origin of this was an October event in Iowa where Obama stood with his hands clasped in front of him while the national anthem was being played.
The pictures and video of the event do show a lapse in his management of his image. Which has little to nothing to do with his ability to lead the nation. Nonetheless the woman who brought it up to me was bothered by it and thought it was indicative of the “hate america” liberal world view. i told her she was being played and that Obama loves the US, you only have to listen to him speak to know it.
They are clueless.
Why does MSNBC say that this is HRC’s “last chance” to run for president???? But..in 2012, she’ll be 64…in 2016…she’ll be 68….
So????
McGigalolobbyoldboytoywarmongerlosthisbearings is 72 NOW…in 2016..he’ll be 80.
Stop it!!!
Wow…so let’s address the double standard that an older woman is an old bag, but an older man is distinguished.
Fork these people.
Boil, boil, toil and trouble…whatever happened to brisingamen??
Great Badreporter cartoon!
Don’t laugh too hard!
Someone repeated that story on Washington Journal just this morning.
Dingbats.
my wish for labor day holiday: every member of congress must go to work with one of their constituents (the ones who don’t get the day off) and spend the whole day at their side. no phones. no press. no photo ops. just the politician and the worker doing what the worker does. every day.
all the powers-that-be in washington d.c. are in need of one hell of a reality check.

*channelling demi @26*
Gotta link for that?
*g*
But to answer your question, giving links to their good work is the most obvious thing anyone can do to support whoever is doing good work. “Hey, did you read what so-and-so said . . .”
That’s a good idea.
I left hospital emergency room off my list of must-sees.
good one!
I liked the BR on elite immigrants taking over the country, too.
(((QuakerGirl)))
Oh, that poor puppy! It really reminded me of those glow-in-the-dark pigs from a few months ago, but they made it sound like this was from natural causes. Something about the placenta or chemical something in the mother’s something…blah, blah, blah. I find it hard to believe! They’re really carrying this crap way too far!
United States of Guilt-by-Association by Mark Fiore
Watchout who ya know!! Funny!!!!!
Looked like an Easter Egg dye job. The only thing that could turn a puppy green would be some kind of disinfectant used during birth, but I don’t know of a green one except nolvasan (sp) which is sort of blueish…or, most likely, a wet newborn puppy placed on a green towel while drying out..that is a possibility..
But it was kinda a lime green, really more in line with those iridescent pigs. I had the feeling if the lights were turned off, well, you know what I think will happen. I’ve never seen anything like it, but they tried to pass it off as a natural phenomenon.
Ditto.
I received an email a couple of weeks ago with all the Obama usual stuff. Muslim, insisted on using Koran to be sworn in, member of the United Church of Christ ( in spite of the muslim stuff) etc. It said the information was pointed out to the sender by his granddaughter. The email gave a link to snopes.com and said the recipient should go there and it would support all the statements. So I did. And instead of supporting it negated everything. Apparently the sender doesn’t expect people to actually check it out. So I sent a reply saying that the information was all bullshit and the sender should actually check his own reference. I also happen to be a member of a United Church of Christ congregation and while we are very tolerant we are NOT Muslim.
The reply I got back just said that the sender didn’t really know anything about all the rumors but that she still was upset that Obama used the Koran. Obviously she still didn’t go to the so called support link. Some people. You just have to wonder.
Been thinking about and praying for her all day.(((QuakerGirl)))
I love this community.
BTW, is there something I missed about Quaker Girl? What happened?
It’s a “cheap” shot to suggest that McCain doesn’t remember who he voted for in 2000, when asked at age 72″…but…”It’s not a cheap shot to say that 60 years old is Hillary’s ‘last chance’ to get elected”…
Tweety…ahole.
End stage Leukemia. Sux.
Oh, now I know what you’re talking about…those experiment piglets…Okay…
You know I was trying to come up with a single instance (Helen Thomas excepted) in the last 7 years where a White House reporter did this. I got nothing.
QuakerGirl is in hospice for leukemia.
McClatchy and Juan Cole.
retired cia my ass. doesn’t matter anyway; you can bet he would have called one of his old similarly-minded un-retired cia pals for some record checking using government resources, for sure.
Is there anything organized to send love? And help?
Oh Christy! If these lies died, the right wing would just make up new lies!
Please please give her our best! How can we help?
A shipmate from my father’s WWII destroyer sent it to me and two rotc faculty members at a university in Utah were on the email list. I wrote him back that that kind of racist bullshit was not what my father fought for in WWII and not what I fought for in Vietnam. No reply.
Surely you jest.
Yeah, I know, don’t call you Shirley.
Tidbits:
And from the DSM-IV codebook:
We’ll soon no doubt be hearing from the HRC camp that superdelegates are undemocratic and irrelevant. That the only votes that matter are the primary contests “in tough districts” where she will ostensibly do better in the General than The Sheikh, even if she lost to him in them during those primaries.
Shorter HRC: “I am owed this nomination.”
that sucks … beams to quakergirl
Here about 20 miles from Hogan’s house it’s all over the news and on the on-line front page of the papers. Who the f*** cares?
Right. Hillary…why don’t you come right out and say you “too” want to be “appointed Prezdinent”..just like W.
What is she thinking?
Yay!!!
Just finished hours of wrestling with the univerity computer system, and finally got all my students’ grades in.
Hello, summer!
I saw that on CNN’s website. (((green puppy)))
she’s thinking she has to be president and that’s about all that matters.
it’s sad …
Is she in Iowa?
Happy Summer ET! I have almost a whole month left.
The other night in Siun’s thread I made a comment to Siun, IRT to your argument, that implied that are not articulate. That was poorly worded on my part.
Hillaryarious! Not safe for work, though…
Congrats. Now, whatever you do, don’t answer the office phone or check your academic email for at least two weeks. The whiners are the worst.
OMG! So sorry to hear that! I had no idea! So sorry, also, about your dad. I left a message on the thread that you told us, but wasn’t sure you weren’t already gone.
Listen, that was a heated argument and I had no idea “markfromireland” was held in such great esteem as an expert on the military and “Irak” specifically. My only point was that, while we have no business there, there are other people in Irak that benefit from the slaughter. There is no question that there are “barbaric” people in the military but I’m not going to just be quiet when someone, anyone, paints the entire military as barbaric.
“We don’t need a Muslim,” said Jannay Smith, a retiree from Kokomo, Ind. “Who’s to say if he gets in there what he’ll do?”
That’s what was leveled at JFK, ca 1959 or so.
Let’s hope it meets the same degree of success.
Excellent advice
Mike Gravel has actually released a new YouTube ad. At first, I thought it was a prank, but - apparently - it is genuine.
That should be a really nice week, up there in Alaska. Enjoy it, ET!
It must have been brutal! or did you tangle with the big guy?
I don’t think you should be quiet.
It’s too funny. It took me several seconds to realize it was gravel.
My biggest fear is Obama is going to get swift boated, if not already, and not realize it. Look how long it took the campaign to react to the Wright thing. Every time I see John Kerry on TV talking about Obama or see him on stage with Obama, it makes me shudder.
Well, I shouldn’t have gotten cute an put up the Full Metal Jacket quote but I left out the best part!
They are on that shit like a duck on a junebug.
Raven - who cares what label is assumed by whom.
I love to hear your voice.
You were there.
DudeRaven!!!
that’s all i have to say about that.
I wasn’t in no Irak.
Thanks, I was letting it go.
bwahahaha! you snuck that one in!
don’t forget she’s ahead if you count mi and fl and everyone who hasn’t already voted and the ones who have and the ones who voted for mccain but will vote for her in the GE. She won the states the matter thanks to the people who matter and will win teh ones who don’t matter and yet they do because they are americans and the superdelegates know how sincere she is because they know her best and they should be the ones to decide unless they decide otherwise and she has friends lots of friends rich friends who will not send you money unless you vote for her because this isn’t a vote for student council this is the united states of clinton, I mean, america and she works for you the people who matter most!!! She’s in it to win it!!!
