So much for that "family values" party label. Via Dana Milbank:
It was already shaping up to be a difficult year for congressional Republicans. Now, on the cusp of Mother's Day, comes this: A majority of the House GOP has voted against motherhood....
It has long been the custom to compare a popular piece of legislation to motherhood and apple pie. Evidently, that is no longer the standard. Worse, Republicans are now confronted with a John Kerry-esque predicament: They actually voted for motherhood before they voted against it.
Republicans, unhappy with the Democratic majority, have been using such procedural tactics as this all week to bring the House to a standstill, but the assault on mothers may have gone too far. House Minority Leader John Boehner, asked yesterday to explain why he and 177 of his colleagues switched their votes, answered: "Oh, we just wanted to make sure that everyone was on record in support of Mother's Day."
By voting against it?
Putting obstructionism ahead of moms is the Republican way. Got it.
Meanwhile, the Bush Administration is still hiding things from the public. And the Congress. As LHP pointed out yesterday evening, that a "...reference to the Federal Register reflects the past practice of actually PUBLISHING Executive Orders, so the rest of us would know what they said. Oh, and in olden days (read, before the Supreme Court annointed Shrub to be King) OLC opinions were routinely published, too." Oh, how things have changed.
Sen. Russ Feingold has been pushing for more scrutiny and more disclosure for a long time -- and his recent hearing on Secret Government Law was one in a series of attempts at oversight. In an op-ed in yesterday's LATimes, Feingold made this salient point:
...No one questions the need for the government to protect information about intelligence sources and methods, troop movements or weapons systems. But there's a big difference between withholding information about military or intelligence operations from the public and withholding the law that governs the executive branch. Keeping the law secret doesn't enhance national security, but it does give the government free rein to operate without oversight or accountability. Even the congressional intelligence committees, which are supposed to oversee the intelligence community, have been denied access to some of these legal opinions.
Congress should pass legislation to require the administration to alert Congress when the law created by Justice Department opinions ignores or even violates the laws passed by Congress, and to require public notice when it is waiving or modifying a published executive order. Congress and the public shouldn't have to wonder whether the executive branch is following the laws that are on the books or some other, secret law. (emphasis mine)
It is as though some elaborate fiction has replaced our experiment in government by and for the people.
Sam Seder, who is one of the best informed hosts on progressive radio, had two recent interviews that are well worth a listen on this very point. One, a podcast interview with Sen. Feingold on the secret law issues, and the second a podcast interview with Philippe Sands on how America's secret torture policies came to be. As Sen. Feingold made quite clear back in 2006, the GOP isn't exactly standing on solid footing based on their own prior arguments about the rule of law and the limitations of government in pushing expanded unilateral presidential power. But that doesn't keep Bush officials from refusing to answer questions, or GOP loyalists from refusing to ask them, does it?
We have a complacent media which has failed to do much meaningful follow-up to two huge stories: on the revelations that torture procedures were hand-approved at the highest levels of the Bush Administration and on the Pentagon's use of planted PR propaganda purveyors in the form of retired military officers. (The Pentagon has put a cache of documents online for reading, but have seen no reporting from media sources on what is contained therein. Anyone want to do a bit of reading this weekend?)
Governments must be held accountable for their actions. And if the Congress and the Fourth Estate are incapable of doing so, then it is up to the public -- through the power of the ballot box and repeated contact with elected officials to force the issue to the fore. The GOP's repeated tactic has been to stall and prevent any meaningful oversight, putting party politics before the national interest, and to try and make any legitimate hearing of substance into as much of a bread and circuses farce as possible. (I'm looking at you, Issa, Burton and crew.)
So let's talk about how we can best hold them accountable, since it looks like it's pretty much up to us...
PS -- I may be on with Sam this Sunday at 5 pm ET. Soon as this firms up, I'll let you know...

Christy, mom!
New organization: MACM
Mothers Against Congressional Madness
Milbank pointed out that these Gooper Congresscritters were for mothers before they were against them.
Heh.
The “obstructionism ahead of moms” link, just under the Milbank quote, has video of the GOP obstructionist idiocy on this. In case anyone wants to watch it in all its gory…
The media couldn’t cover these issues if they wanted to- they’re too complicated….they can cover murders, rapes, missing white women, and other issues where there is absolutely no grayness and no preconditions for understanding what the issue is
What they CANT’T cover are issues where the question is one of degree or where there are two complicated and competing arguments its impossible for em
Umm..when will the Democrats start screaming about gridlock, gridlock, gridlock?
When will they start beating the Republicans up for being partisan and unwilling to compromise?
Waiting….

EPU’ed so I will park it here:
OT Crude oil is trading at around $125/bbl, this despite the fact that the US supply of crude oil increased by a very healthy 5.7 million bbls last week (putting it squarely at the midpoint of its average range). It increasingly irritates me when people point to supply/demand issues controlling price. If this were true, crude should be dipping in price this week but the reverse is happening. The real story continues to be the hedge fund driven play pushing money into oil and other commodities when the dollar weakens and pushing it out when the dollar shows any strength.
FWIW, Hoyer pitched an enormous fit on the floor of the House on the record about these tactics…
Complacent? Surely you meant complicit.
I’m not sure where in the process that clip comes from. I did find two recorded votes on the resolution, the unanimous one and the one with the 177 no votes. I have links to those votes at the site I’ve just started posting to on The Case Against Cliff (Stearns, my soon to be ex-Congressman).
It would be smart for the Dems to put forth a bill affirming Mother’s Day in it’s original intent. Get the thugs to vote against mothers and peace. Would love to see the roll call on that one.
morning christy!
have you seen this?
I am laying ten to one the president does not comply
OT - request to kossacks:
please consider giving a recommend to RandomNonviolence’s diary featuring Hugh’s List of Bush Scandals and Edward Teller’s scroll. thanks!
I am old enough to remember the good old days when oil was only $100 a barrel.
178 Mothers need to grab their childrens by the ear and drag them out to the woodshed for a good thrashing.
Momma’s , don’t let your children grow up to be
cowboysRepublicans.Dems should have a think tank generating bills that are overwhelmingly popular but that goopers CANNOT vote for..
It’s called “wedge issues” I believe. Goopers were great with em- dems- not so much.
Like- require one more paid holiday per year from all employers- in honor of say Jesus.
Hoyer is an excellent speaker on the floor, I like to hear him lecture them. It was one of the few bright spots in 2004, listening to hector Tom Delay.
The Republican obstructionism of the past week really shows disdain for the Institution and a basic contempt for the People-Flash! I found this link earlier when we were discussing their obstructionism, it is the floor summary for the last week. You can see how many frivolous actions they taken. It is an outrage!
OT: “When you’ve lost
CronkiteRasmussen, you’ve lost America”:I’m an idiot! Here’s the link!
LOL
Re Hoyer, will his anger over Republican tactics push him to scuttle his moves to introduce immunity for telecoms?
But, Obama’s growing lead simply shows the increasing desperation of his campaign among hardworking American whites.
Make Clusterfuck veto a bill making Good Friday a paid holiday for all americans!!!
That’s the kinda spirit I wanna see on the hill.
Obama’s got the primary in the bag- On to the general.
Goopers are 100% behind Jesus- as long as he doesn’t COST em anything.
this is too much … I mean, seriously, it’s not like a resolution in favor of mother’s day is really the most important thing for the house to be voting on. But, it is funny to see the thugs tie themselves in notes ;)

Hugh:
I just want you to know that I appreciate your updates very much. We follow natural gas prices very closely for our clients and they’ve been tracking oil, even if they shouldn’t be linked. It’s really important to emphasize the hedge fund angle for folks–it’s such a huge factor in the price run-up.
notes = knots … (sigh)
I thought that this was about Healthcare then I read the link they really voted against moms? What is Karl, Newt and all the Republican *cough* wisemen thinking?
Or was this something Satan demanded that they do.
I’m serious how does even Pat Buchanan spin a vote against Moms? How do the GOP talking heads explain how this vote helps the GOP politically?
This is the lowest bit of playing politics on a vote for no purpose not even money that I have seen.
I like the first version: had an image of goopers covering themselves with Post-Its.
Goopers may not be doin exactly the right thing if they want to be re-elected?
well, they’d probably do that too if it would help keep the house from doing anything …
Goopers have minds like steel traps- and they keep gettin their feet caught in there- OUCH!
The McBu’ush Maverick:
Spin this away, John.
If the Goopers are stamping their little feet and throwing hissy fits now, wait until after November when they get their asses kicked and turn into a REAL minority party.
There will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
…and they gnawed in approval
I love the sound of Goopers wailin and gnashin in the mornin.
What a find!!
McGovern’s switch in support from Clinton to Obama was an important signal. There are probably a lot of Clinton superdelegates who would like to switch but are willing to wait for Clinton to exit the race in her own way. If, however, she lingers, there will be more switching and more internal pressure on her to get out. Another big consideration is that Clinton’s money resources are drying up. The people behind that money have already read the writing on the wall even if Clinton hasn’t. I think we are into the phase where the question will be what sop to Clinton’s ego will be sufficient for her to pack it in. Some of her supporters have no place in an Obama Administration and they know it, but for a lot of others they have got to be thinking about moving on and making up with Obama.
Waylon, Gnash, and Gnaw
New southern western group.
The country equivalent to grunge rock.
You are welcome.
Yeah- the details of when and how she exits are a human interest story- but Obama should just start attacking McBush and ignore her.
I am flabbergasted that the talking heads still only want to talk about Hillary…”Why is she still in?” “When will she quit” “Will she accept and offer for veep”?
Who gives a flyin fuck! She’s yesterdays news!
Republicans, unhappy with the Democratic majority, have been using such procedural tactics as this all week to bring the House to a standstill, but the assault on mothers may have gone too far.
The GOP is angry at the Dems for what its not like the Dems have stoped the war, given us healthcare etc. The Dems could be defunding every bit of pork in every GOP district.
The Dems could be freezing all KBR’s war contracts for electrocuting how many of our solders. Then there is the defective helmet scandal etc we could freeze all those contracts until after an investigation.
We could be doing allot of things but we are not.
And the GOP is unhappy what more do they want?
Speaking of family values…
As much as I’d like to see that happen, I’d much rather see the scofflaws rightfully impeached. Isn’t the purpose of impeachment getting rid of officials who break the law?
It’s because their interests have all been invested in keeping the “horse race” narrative going, because they sure haven’t done diddly on McCain the last few weeks. So long as the horse race continues, they don’t have to, either…and they can continue to get face time if they play up the “will she or won’t she” angle.
Her ego and the perks of the Senate will preclude her ever doing Veep. The Sheikh would never agree to it anyway. Can you imagine? VP Hillary taking every possible opportunity to upstage him and act like she was the de facto Prez. One Cheney has been quite enough, thanks.
“Horse race”…hmmm…oh, a certain tasteless recent tragic analogy begs.
Naw.
And I truly think that the biggest obstacle for Obama is Pres. Bill. He has become so unpredictable, volatile…one never knows what he will say. I think he could possibly undermine any Pres. agenda, maybe without even intending to, or not.
Next on the Republican legislative agenda:
A federally mandated program to manually strangle kittens.
.
Developing story:
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/....._0509.html
Make that an unfunded mandate, too.
Thom Hartmann played the audio of “Mr. I hate Mothers” on his local show this morning. It’ll probably make it on the national show too, which is starting right now.
Excellent…
“So let’s talk about how we can best hold them accountable, since it looks like it’s pretty much up to us…”
The only way “we” can hold them accountable I would think, is to clearly and specifically point out exactly which laws they have broken…and present the evidence that is already out there; the one’s that seem the most obvious are torture, kidnapping, and the destruction of the CIA tapes, and the destruction of the emails in the WH. Hammering the torture story home to the public is the most effective, because it is the most shocking. We cannot let them get away with it — no matter what. JMHO
If this proposed land swap were to go through, I suppose that it will be structured as a Section 1031 exchange, unless some impediment precludes it.
The Clintons time is now over…I have no ill will about them. Now’s the time to talk about the REAL story- Obama and McBush!
This current game of gotcha these idiots are playin is going to come back and bite the when they have to come up for reelection. It’s going to make for some great attack ads. All anyone is going to have to do is publish the voting record.
Don’t worry; according to Hacktacular Howie a couple of days ago, the Chicago Tribune has already ventured there.
Neigh Bobby!
Whoa … !
Rein it in there Bobby or you’ll be saddled with a bad rep.
What if there’s an upset?
We whoan’t know ’til they cross the Finish Line …
Now , please Bobby, don’t bridle at my concern.
A stable society requires patience and and time to see whom we will in-stall as our Champion.
Please don’t horse around with these things, Bobby, they are sacred, and there is still a furlong to go …
Should we reflect on the lies that got us into this endless, illegal war?
HOO-AHHH!!
Yet another Repu’ublicist “unfunded mandate.”
707!
Lets encourage Obama to create a truth and reconciliation commission that could open up the possibility of criminal proceedings. Serious jail time is the only thing that can really restore the constitution now that impeachment is off the table?
That is a great idea.
Let’s get him ELECTED—
Wow! And Valerie meeting with Michelle Obama…
T & R commissions do not lead to criminal charges. Participants trade the truth about an event for an agreement that they will not be charged on the basis of their testimony.
My goal now is to get Obama elected with as large a dem majority behind him as possible so that he can get something done…
My guy didn’t win the primary- but that’s water under the bridge- I refuse to look backwards.
Oh, yeah! Those ads write themselves.
Unfortunately, one of the hallmarks of a “truth and reconciliation commission” (if following the South Africa model) is that no punishment/charges are brought if the evil-doers are honest in recounting the mis-deeds.
Otherwise, what incentive do they have to be honest?
Be not forgettin’ that the Newtster is tellin’ them they’re in trouble. When the Newtster talks, everyone listens. Oh? Well, then, never mind.
Obama will probably turn a bit to the center as the general election approaches- don’t be surprised.
I may be one of the few Americans who still pays attention to the Newter.
I find him highly entertaining.
It’s not the people who would testify who I’d like to see in jail. It’s the Cheneys and Bushes, who would never testify anyway.
Quitcher naggin’, DW.
Wonder if the McBush people have a detailed strategy for disengaging their boy from Clusterfuck? Will be interested to see how subtle they can be.
You mean the guys who walked out on Jackie Speier,
the guys who walked out on the Miers contempt vote,
the ones forcing dems to vote during the Lantos memorial, the ones who continually vote to adjourn all day long,
the ones who are so very very nervous about November?
the ones who go to photo ops with the worst “president” ever?
do they have mothers? I hope they get a big Time Out in November.
And hey pups, I hope you come out of the basement long enough to hug your moms on Sunday. Cheers!
So I guess U.S. soldiers and prisoners at Guantanamo have at least one thing in common. Interesting.
Huffpo.
That’s good….I cannot imagine evil doers Cheney/W admitting any misdeeds. Isn’t W the one who could not recall any mistakes? Of course, he cannot recall much of anything.
No can do, they are joined in a loving embrace forever.
Interesting:
Great observation. Our soldiers are being held prisoners by their own country. How sad is that !
Yes, McBush people have a dedicated phone line to the Original Albatross office…they check in several times a day to get permission to distance themselves.
Thanks largely to FDL, I am a mom who will need to come out of the basement to hug my kids. *g*
I hope that he is looking as closely at the Cindy contributions.
that should be our goal… Dem candidate elected by 60% of the popular vote, 2/3rds majorities in both houses, Bush Dogs and the Constitution State Dog out… think big
Agreed.
Yeah- sadly the would be leader of the free world has ta go ask “mommy may I” to say that some of the decisions of the current prez were less than optimal.
Actually admitting to crimes and getting it all out in the open has got to be cleansing in some way, at least I feel it would be.
I like the idea very much.
LOL, me too.
Another challenge to help make me smart (many have tried, all have failed). What’s the scoop on the sub rosa Obama folks’ talk about helping Hillary repay her debt? Noble notion, I suppose, but as an Obama donor (shallow pockets variety), I find this off-putting — even if she is a mom.
The healing from the primary can start now- and it can start here…
Obsequious beyond words…
Heh. Me too. The lake keeps me sane between poopy diapers and the snack parade.
He’s done it before, he’ll do it again. Senator Obama’s campaign is going to try to declare us all (rethugs and dems) one big happy family.
Me, too. I don’t want the money I sent to Obama to go to Hillary. Don’t want to be mean spirited but why on earth should he pay her campaign debt? I don’t get it.

June 19, 2007 Senate testimony
http://democrats.senate.gov/jo.....?id=277654
Well it looks like they’re on top of this.
And I have only heard this suggestions from repukes like Tim Russert…what’s up with that?
Having a guy who got most of his donations under $100 repaying a millionaire who won’t go away because they can loan their own campaign $6 mil and keep spending? Doesn’t make any sense at all and I suspect it’s just another attempt to hamper Obama.
Hay! I when I gots the bit in muh mouf …
In-steed ya want me ta pony up to corrallin’ muh thots …
I’ll wither a whey …
But, I declare, I thinkee Obama will whinny …
But that oat to evident …
;~D
could be the basis of a deal though.
Yes. But, I think it is really hard to nail them down with concrete evidence unless we can see emails or witnesses come forward…now all those emails are missing — that should at least fall into the category of destroying presidential records. We know they lied us into war, but we need something that says that they planned to do that. The Downing Street memo is not enough.
I wonder what percentage of the casualties in the last 24 months were in a stop-loss status?
