On the same day that $100 million-plus heiress/candidate spouse Cindy McCain says, "How about never? Is never a good time for you?" with regard to when she'll release her tax returns, the Associated Press profiles the most fearsome financial powerhouse of the 2008 election:
Kriss Riggs isn't one to spend her money on politicians.
"Even the place you can donate a dollar on your taxes, I refuse to do it," says the 60-year-old photographer from Blue River, Ore.
Likewise for Kate Schwartz, a 24-year-old marketing expert from Chicago. Past elections, she says, always seemed far removed from young people.
"A lot of people felt like it wasn't happening in my demographic," Schwartz said.
Not this time.
Riggs and Schwartz are foot soldiers in Barack Obama's 1.5-million-strong army of campaign contributors. Dozens of Associated Press interviews with donors, and an AP financial analysis show how contributions that make only a soft ca-ching by themselves, arriving in increments of $10, $15 and $50, have collectively swelled into a financial roar that has helped propel Obama toward the Democratic president nomination.
Altogether, Obama's campaign has taken in an unprecedented $226 million, most of it contributed online. His donor base is larger than the one the Democratic National Committee had for the 2000 election.
These are hardly political fat cats. Ninety percent of his donors give $100 or less, and 41 percent have given $25 or less, according to the Obama campaign.
I think I like this contrast on the subject of public accountability -- or, to put it in less jargonesque language, knowing who you work for -- going into the fall campaign. Barack is likely to be the target of whining from the Double-Talk Express if he chooses to opt out of the general-election public financing restrictions, but all he has to do is point out that the purpose of that funding approach was to keep candidates from being compromised by their reliance on who's giving them money.
Then he can add, "If John McCain wants to accuse me of being beholden to the nearly 2 million Americans of all backgrounds who have donated money to my campaign, mostly in amounts ranging from 10 to 100 dollars, my answer is... yes! I'm indebted to them, and those are the people whose interests I'll serve as President."
Go for it, John... I dare you.

So, Swopa!
McCain is dangerous
And Mrs McCain is deluded. Does she really think we don’t deserve to see her tax returns if she’s First Lady? C’mon, Cindy, get ahead of this news cycle. Show us. Now.
And hiya, Swopa!
Yes, she really thinks that. There are class privleges involved.
That is exactly right. If she wants a “title”, then she has to play to get paid.
No title, no servants, no chefs, no transportation, no lunches, no vacations, no sheets, no laundry, no flights, no security, nada, zero, zilch…
I refuse to pay for a multi, multi-millionaire heiress’s creature comforts, who wants to “represent” me domestically, and internationally, without knowing who and what she is and whether she is corrupt or not.
Not one stinkin’ penny.
What about that Barney’s bill? Huh? Huh??
Don’t cry for me Cindy Peron!!!
I’m one of those lil foot soldiers *g*
Thanks for the post Swopa
Remember Leona?
emphasis mine.
Cindy:
We don’t have to report our taxes. Only the little people have to report their taxes.
So will the media ever hold them to account for ANYTHING?
Good post, Swopa! Always happy to read a good put down of Cindy McBush who thinks she has the right to criticize the government of Myanmar. She says when she sees those images, she wants to go there, to be there! I might believe her if she and her husband weren’t ghosts during the Drowning of New Orleans. He was a Senator. Where was he? Where was her money when former VP Gore had to rent two private airliners to get those people out of the hospital in NOLA. Words are easy; but pictures are worth a thousand words. Yet I don’t remember any pictures of either McBushie with rolled up sleeves passing out water bottles or even given comfort to folks when it was needed most.
Hmmm….heh, heh…she’s got somethin’ to hide….
All that raw sewage flood water would have ruined her manicure.
Wow. $226 million!!!
‘Ninety percent of his donors give $100 or less, and 41 percent have given $25 or less,’
That is amazing…People Power..:)
Not to mention her Day-Glo suits. Can’t have that now can we? snort
If the topic is Cindy McSugarmama, then I’m OT…if the topic is outrageously wealthy political people, then I am not. While reading this, it hit me that Dick Cheney had put all of his assets into a “blind trust” and I wanted to find out about that and came up with this: “Overall, our vice president has somewhere between 13 and 40 million dollars invested in things whose performance is based on interest rates and inflation rising, and the dollar tanking.” This, by the way, was written in…2006.

And can you imagine what it would have done to that bleach blond hair?!! The fumes alone would have caused a chemical reaction!
The last time she reported her wealth, reporters found her investment (with her dad) in Charles Keating’s shopping centers, and thus uncovered St McCain’s meetings on Keating’s behalf with regulators.
Given this history, she MUST release her returns. Is the media simply afraid of all the hard werk to go through them?
They’re afraid of not being invited for more “mouth watering ribs.”
the media with few exceptions no longer does the hard work. It seems as if few of them even know how to google.
While I hope your premise were correct, consider two items: 1) Politicians tell you what you want to hear, after carefully test marketing their message. Case in point was Bushco during the 2000 campaign. After the election, they started their agenda and walked away from campaign promises. 2) Illinois, Cook County and Chicago politics are breeding grounds for connected and sometimes crooked politicians. We have a glimpse of Obama’s connections in Chicago politics with Rezko. While it’s not fair to lump Obama with crooked ward politics, it is fair to wonder, as others have, to whom does he owe favors and what will happen after he’s elected?
you may wonder to your hearts content
i think this is actually very cool. The internet lets us play the money-as-free-speech card against the big money.
Absolutely.
re cindy, this sure seems like another IOKIYAR situation. Can you imagine if H and B Clinton had tried to argue separate tax returns and that he didn’t need to release his?
Exactamundo.

EEEEdoggies…the fascists are outta the closet, the racist political whores stand exposed in the middle of the American street and Barak is callin’ John McCrazy out!!! God damn man, don’tcha jest LOVE it??!!! This is what it feels like to be part of a movement, to be back inside our own history again. they can’t beat us this time and they know it!!
KEEP THE FAITH, IT AIN’T BARAK’S JOB IT’S OURS!!
We should thoroughly scrutinize anyone who wishes to occupy the Whitehouse as President or VP, including their spouses. No exceptions.
That is the most enthusiastic comment I’ve ever seen from you Norke!!! Gives me a good feeling!!
I’ve found Obama’s best choice for Press Secretary. He’s already tested.

I hope MIchelle Obama is working on a new throw-away line when asked by a multimillionaire media maven about being an elitist: “Well, I don’t have my own jet.” She can pull it off, I believe, with a smile and a wave of her hand.
I want to see McCain’s health records - unredacted.
I want to see Cindy’s tax returns - unredacted.
In that case, you must consider the following question:
Just what is McCain’s wife hiding? Just when will the MSM ask McCain what is his wife hiding.
I say in the absence of truth rumor will spread what do you want to bet Cindy thanks to clever tax loopholes pays nothing in taxes?
Opps the rumors have started already. If the pMSM keeps giving McCain a pass we will fill the void. Nature abhors a vaccuum.

Citizen LS:
I like to think I’m always “enthusiastic”…I’m jest not always happy or optimistic. And I don’t always try and put a happy face on lies, distortions or ignorance. But the point is not MY enthusiasm, or Barak’s enthusiasm but OUR, collective enthusiasm. That’s what it feels like ta be part of somethin bigger’n yerself…this is Barak’s message and it puts us in contact with our history. This campaign is poised to become much larger than Barak Obama and that’s why those who say “he’s not a progressive” or “he’s not…” still don’t understand that Obama’s candidacy and what he tries to get accomplished in office will be determined by US and how strong a movement we can create.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION WE ARE THE ONES WHO HAFTA TAKE THIS FIGHT TO THE BASTARDS!!
Yup!
Obama’s an Elitist well lets see McCain and Cindy campaign on Obama’s turf Chicago’s SouthSide without bulletproof vests, troops, armored
HumveesLimos and attack helicopters in the sky.Can McCain walk the streets of America? Is he one of us?
I grew up going to an almost all white public school surely McCain has more guts than a school kid.
ORGANIZE…ORGANIZE…ORGANIZE!!!
My comment at 33 says pMSM it should read MSM
Great post, Swopa. I can’t add anything intelligent to that.
OT and refresh is my friend. And my apologies. My comment on the last thread:
So where are the “reasonable” Christian pastors/leaders, e.g., Jim Wallis, now that we’ve got full blown crazies like Hagee and Parsley out spoutin’ their crap on the campaign trail? Where were they when the Rev Dr Wright was taking all the heat for his remarks? And giving back in good measure I might add. So where are the leaders of the great American churches? Are they out there trying to counteract these bozos and I’ve missed it? I think if I were a Christian leader, which I probably couldn’t be further from, I’d be out there telling folks that preaching hate and discontent ain’t where it’s at. Why is it up to folks like firepups to take these fools on?
I was going with “pusillanimous”
she has a FOUNDATION,she prolly pays NO TAX
We already know she’s very, very wealthy. I have no problem with that.
What it feels like though, is that they have set up their finances so that she can shield something on her side by citing that she is the “spouse” not the candidate and, therefore, immune from examination…partially via the pre-nuptial agreement.
okay…but..if you are the spouse of the candidate and you insist on remaining financially “independent” of your elected spouse…well, then you must remain financially independent from any taxpayer-financed activities…all of them. You must pay for yourself 100% of the way. Not one penny of the Peoples’ money, and no tax deductions related to political operations either…
Or…you allow your tax records to be examined to assure that there are no conflicts of interest or sheltered expenditures or inappropriate campaign donations, financing, loans, etc….
If everything seems kosher…no problemo…
Yeah we need a plan the GOP is always no plan, laws, rules the market will self regulate we need SOCIALISM. We need to ask what do we want and what are we willing to do to get it.
Plus the rights of the individual and the group must be worked out.
HAHahahahahahahahahaha
That will work.
I meant it all in a good way. Reading that you are uplifted gives me an uplifting feeling. I know how hard you fight against the bastids!!! It ain’t over yet, but there is hope.
everything goes through the Biz,i bet…corporate, corporate, corporate, and UN touchable
I just had a thought. Maybe she’s hiding something…from her husband…
Just listening to “Joe Hill”. Organize! is quite appropriate.
Is her Foundation tax exempt how can we find out the foundations assets and contributors? Did Cindy put all her cash in there to hide it from taxes, does the foundation employ people who are now working for John’s Presidential Campaign?
SadlyYes I think you struck Gold!
We deserve to see her tax returns for one simple reason: her husband has flip-flopped on making the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest permanent. Now that he wants the tax cuts to be permanent, America has the right to know how much these tax cuts benefit his wife.
And, by extension, him and their children.
Foundations have very very specific rules - in terms of how much money has to be spent and what it has to be spent ON and so on; otherwise, it’s not a charitable foundation.
a good read
How Europe Avoided Our Mess
The credit crisis, which is sapping America’s economic strength, was the result of an almost religious belief in deregulation. It is instructive to consider the economic situation in nations that resisted deregulation.
Robert Kuttner | May 5, 2008 | web only
Last week’s Federal Reserve’s rate cut of a quarter point is said to be the last one for a while. The Fed is about out of tricks.
Though our central bankers have now cut short term rates from 5.25 last September to the current 2.0 percent, credit costs to long-term borrowers are higher than they were a year ago — because lenders fear increased inflation.
Some of this is the Fed’s own doing. Its cheap-money policy, necessitated by the Fed’s own failure to police harmful speculative practices, has further weakened the dollar, raising prices of imported commodities.
Many credit markets are still frozen for lack of investor confidence — something that low interest rates cannot bring back. Losses continue to mount on the balance sheets of banks that made foolish speculative investments, causing credit to contract further.
None of this had to happen. The credit crisis, which is sapping America’s economic strength, was the result of an almost religious belief in deregulation whose excesses are now coming home to roost.
It is instructive to compare the American financial mess with the economic situation in nations that resisted deregulation. Old Europe tends to get a scornful press in the U.S. But Europe is not suffering a financial meltdown today — mainly because Europeans (with the exception of Britain and Switzerland) took only a few sips of the financial Kool-Aid so heavily promoted by U.S. banks.
A few European banks did get into trouble last summer, because they had been persuaded to buy toxic sub-prime securities made in America. Germany’s powerhouse Deutsche Bank continues to suffer some big losses. But the European Central Bank, in its first real test since the Euro made its public debut in 2002, has performed well and the crisis has largely passed. On our side of the ocean, the Fed keeps lurching from bailout to bailout.

Right!!! Maybe she’s billions more wealthy than he thinks she is….heh, heh…but he can’t touch it, because of the pre-nup.
Maybe she’s been supporting another gigalo…
Maybe she’s been spying on him…
The maybe’s are endless….

Yup…something evading taxes or evading John.
Well, let’s put it THIS way…she wouldn’t be the first woman who had some money of her own who was hiding stuff from her batshit crazy husband…just in case…
she has by my calculations AT LEAST 3 BILLION,not this crappy 100 mill
Maybe Stephen Hess of the Brookings Institute should way in, as he did on Kerry’s wife, in the NYT:
Hi, back briefly to see whazzup….
Still pissed about Hillary’s overtly racist “white Americans” slap at Obama.
Let’s not forget that the Bush tax cuts were first and foremost for Bush, the entire Bush family, and all their cronies.
OPEN THE BOOKS!!!
and their STINKING CORPORATIONS 75% PAY NO TAX AT ALL!!!!!!
If I had eight houses, I’d be mighty tempted to store away a Raul or Pierre just for rainy days when the spouse was in DeeCee. Bet Cindy does too.
okay…but..if you are the spouse of the candidate and you insist on remaining financially “independent” of your elected spouse…well, then you must remain financially independent from any taxpayer-financed activities…all of them. Well what if Cindy as a spouse is or has given more money or in kind gifts to her husbands political campaigns like use of the corporate jet than an individual is allowed to contribute Max to a political campaign?
If she uses the family money excuse to get around individual max contribution limits then we should see her tax forms.
I’m guessing that with McCain’s early cash flow problems Cindy has already given more than the Max.
The ice princess is never going to let the peasants see what she has. It’s all hers and she is going to keep it.
pool boy?
Mr Hess would most likely say said that the same rules do not apply when seeking the Republic presidential nomination.
not just white americans, but “hard working americans, white americans” …
grrr ….
I read your outstanding chronicle about Sissy. It has been with me all day…like when you have a dream and it stays with you all day…Wow.
And when has a politician ever broken the rules? I think we should double check.
oh yes,she tells Johnny boy every night…WHATS MINE IS MINE,and whats YOURS is mine…hahahahahahaha
Pool boys? Heh, heh..
Or…private detectives chasing the Cindy clones…
Umm…Both.
Yeah.
In contrast to those shiftless blacks and hispanics, etc.
I agree! My point, not well made it seems, is that by the time a modern day politician gets into national office, how many of their ideals and honor have been sold to the highest corporate bidder. Bill and Hillary are prime examples. It’s a long sorry road from Warren’s “One man, One Vote” to Rehnquists “One Dollar, One Vote”.
And then he calls her a *unt and a trollop..and all is well…say wha?
as long as I’m on that, interesting table in wapo article re percentage white votes:

From memory:
I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night,
as alive as you or me,
Said I, “Joe Hill, you’re ten years dead,”
“I never died, says he”
Perhaps that’s the spirit Obama needs to start channeling?
Bob in HI
her company makes 300,000,000.00 PER YEAR…at a 10x ratio…3 BILL,at least
i said from day one…what did she ever see in the LITTLE shrimp?
Very good read I’m glad most of my investments are in Europe.
“Many credit markets are still frozen for lack of investor confidence”
Which credit markets are still frozen?
Maybe we all oughtta hit her up for a loan…
Jackie’s Blue Ruuuum.
I think any spouse who thinks that she(or he) is not part and parcel of “the package” is deluding themselves. Who was it..Mamie Eisenhower?.. who “ran” on “I’m not Eleanor”? The spouse is running as much as their SO is — Laura Bush the Librarian was one part of the “George W. Bush is a reasonable guy, someone you’d like to have a beer with” image.
maybe she can pay off Hill’s loans as part of a brokered nominee deal? Should be no problem now that we know “obama’s the weaker candidate” ;)
“House Editor David Wasserman foresees a photo finish in the MS-01 special election scheduled for Tuesday: If it is true that “time heals all wounds,” Republicans would not be panicking over next week’s north Mississippi special election. Yet, two weeks after Greg Davis (R) finished in second behind Travis Childers (D) in the initial round of balloting, private polls suggest that the needle has not moved and that the party’s chances of holding the seat in the runoff are 50/50 at best”
(Cook political report)
Cook also reports that Feeney is in trouble in Florida- one of america’s favorite fuckheads.
Yup…something evading taxes or evading John.
Either way it hurts McCains
what did she SEE? She saw a hugely ambitious guy who she could use to get things she wants. She’s an ambitious person too…
Of course…so true. She’s either in it or not. Put up or stfu.

My son was just fighting with the hound to get back a paper airplane the dog had hijacked. He was pretending to arrest the dog and said,
Anything you say can, and will be, misquoted and used against you.
When asked, he said he saw it on a T-Shirt.
Some quote, eh?
i betcha she is stingy, like Leona
ima nerd,whasthis you speak of?
Leona was very, very generous in her old age to many New York charities. Her reputation for stinginess is quite undeserved.
But I know what you mean.
I betcha she is jealous and that “he” controls her emotions and “she” controls the money.
i am glad she learned her lesson in jail…but charity is charity…howzabout a living wage,
Jackie Kennedy…the elegant wife who redecorated the White House and the pride of it was the “Blue Room” at the time…I don’t know if it has been redone since, but it was a big deal then.
and i bet he refuses her sex…betcha
danke…it aint worth it,it just aint……………imo
If I’d inherited my Dad’s business and had done the work…I’d feel “the assets” were mine also. And I would also want a private, secret account someplace with escape money just in case to get away from my husband, with the kids, if need be. I remember reading a story in the WaPo in 1986, March, about a woman who was married to the chief lawyer for the SEC…and who was beaten up so often that she had several miscarriages. the cover of the Sunday Magazine had one half with a picture of her and the other half was the corresponding xrays of her showing all of her broken bones. She eventually sneaked away with her four sons and had to sleep in their car in parking lots to hide from this guy. Eventually, she had to get a handout from her husband’s boss just to eat..that’s when the SEC found out what he’d done to her. She wrote a book about it …and her then ex-husband sued her for money from the book. That has always stayed with me.
she lived across the street from her parents…methinks they all controlled little johnny boy…but relationships where there are big bux canbe power wars
i shudder for the hell that must have been, ive known similar couples believe it or not
Did that in LA for 3 years. Ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Yep - her ex-husband used to get mad and throw her down the stairs..right in front of their kids. She lost three babies that way. This was a good Catholic girl - her parents would not help her because she was obviously no working hard enough on her marriage. I’m sure this woman had a certain feeling of warmth for Lorena Bobbitt.
whanna talk about TERROR?
AWW betcha had lots of fun
That I did. Got serenaded by the likes of Kim Carnes and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Got a really funny story about Kim’s husband, who used to like to come out and chat while Kim practiced piano. Like heaven on Friday mornings.
she verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry purty!
yep, domestic abuse is not limited to any particular neighborhood…we had a nearby scandal about a guy running his family’s very prominent financial business who regularly beat his ############### knew. he hit her so hard, her cheekbone (a very hard bone) shattered on the granite kitchen counter. regular occurence.
Obama $226 million.
Meanwhile The Hill is praising Dubya’s Megabucks Fundraising…that he hit the moneybags for about $50 million last year and might be a little above that pace this year.
Their nominee is actually in debt the remainder of the Primary season and may be unable to pay off those debts…not a pleasant reputation to have when one is heading into a General Election. And then there is the embezzlement that has occurred in the Congressional Republican Campaign Committee, and no one appears to be giving them money anymore to boot. Usually wealthier candidates shunt money to those that have less…this year many Republican candidates may be working on skeleton budgets…while Obama can pass out hundreds of thousands in largesse. And even minor candidates are receiving attention from various groups like Blue America.
Don’t ya love it!
Her Foundation is troweled on!
Oh! You meant the other type of foundation!
