You know, I have heard a lot of excuses during my lifetime, but I have to say that this from Tim Russert may be the weakest crap I have ever heard. Via CJR:
...why have Wright’s way-out words received wall-to-wall coverage while Hagee’s hateful homilies have hardly been mentioned?
IMUS: Big stretch for Frank Rich to suggest that Rev. Hagee, that somehow McCain has the same relationship with him as Obama had with Rev. Wright but he did run it up the flag pole yesterday, didn’t he.
RUSSERT: He sure did. There’s been a lot of chatter on that, you know, about Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson’s comments after September 11th. If there was video of Hagee, it makes all the difference in the world….
If only there were video of Hagee. Then the Russerts of the world, Russert seems to imply, might have paid a bit more attention to him. Readily-available visual clips, you see, would have made “all the difference in the world.”
Clips like… this one? There for the taking since January on YouTube (a fact that Frank Rich led with in the column that Imus and Russert were discussing— complete with instructions for the uninitiated on exactly how to summon a Hagee clip on the YouTubes)?
Russert continued:
It’s interesting the Wright story was around, had been talked about a bit. At the Cleveland debate… I asked Obama about Farrakhan and Wright. What really broke it out though was that video that got on the reel and it kept playing over and over and over again. And because, as you point out, the 20-year relationship [Obama had with Wright]… but I don’t think the Hagee thing, McCain hasn’t been questioned, has not been scrutinized about that… He’s really been given this grace period to go around the country…
Translation: Of course I, Tim Russert, helped to nudge the Wright story into the mainstream with one of my signature timely, hard-driving debate questions but, in fairness, what really “broke it out” was “that video that got on the reel and it kept playing over and over and over again” (How did that video get on that reel and manage to play itself repeatedly? On my show, even?). Meanwhile, McCain has “been given this grace period” by…well, by me and my peers. (emphasis mine)
Jeebus, unless Tim Russert -- the NBC News Washington Bureau Chief -- is employing his entire staff from the Ted Stevens Toobz Temp Agency (Hulk smash media?!?), there really is no excuse for this level of boobery. Unless, of course, it's a deliberately willful obtuseness fueled by a desire to not do one's job properly, to remain ignorant of how the scary internets and Teh Google work, or some sort of weird rib fugue.
That quote from Jonathon Alter on MSNBC's Countdown makes so much more sense in this context, doesn't it?
MADDOW:...But, why do you think that he is still treated as a maverick in the media as if he‘s offering some substantial departure from the status quo?
ALTER: Well, I think it‘s because the battle hasn‘t really been joined. You know, it‘s up to the Democrats, and this is what politics is about, to portray him as, you know, Abe Simpson, you know, Bart‘s grandfather, that krotchy (ph), the old guy who wants to foreclose on your house.
You know, that‘s not the job of the media to do. That will come out of our politics. I think it‘s only a matter of time because, you know, McCain made a speech recently that was very unsympathetic to people who had been victimized by predatory lending. His health care plan does nothing for those who were discriminated against because of pre-existing conditions, and that‘s a lot of Americans.
So, there are certain issues where he is really out of step with the American public, but the American public doesn‘t quite know it yet because the general election campaign hasn‘t really gotten going. (emphasis mine)
It's going to be a long, stupid slog to November...

Zed Zed Punkin’ head!
teh stoopid … it makes my head hurt.
The “if only there was video” quote has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve seen in ages. Timmeh, meet teh Google. Using such scary, incomprehensible search terms as “Hagee video.”
Thank you, I’ll be here all week with my magic internets skillz…
Yep..right up there with “my dog ate my homework.”
The stupid, it burns…
If Timmeh learned to use teh google he’s learn that he’s just a legend in his own mind (and Howard Kurtz’s mind too)
Believe it or not, CNN has had a link on its front page for a few days now to an interesting piece by Roland Martin where he points out how Hagee could and should damage McCain’s candidacy.
Even more astonishingly, Martin places the blame for the double standard squarely at the feet of the media’s darling pundits:
OT
Harry Reid is going to be on Brian Lehrer on wnyc.org tomorrow. Let’s get some good Qs for the associated blog.
Also OT
Sanchez is also going to be on Leonard Lopate on wnyc.org after the news (about 5-6 minutes).
So what are the minimum requirements for a TV pundit? Ability to research? Nope. Ability to analyze? Nope. Ability to stand upright enough that knuckles don’t scrape the floor? Sometimes. Who are these people???
life keeps me from commenting much these days, but i must say i HAVE to read the posts here (and as many of the comments as i have time for) … the intelligence, wit and passion are always a balm to the stoopid that abrades my soul.
I swear, the stupidity and inanity displayed by various bobbleheads is proof that there is no Intelligent Design. If there is, the plan was badly misread when some of those specimens were produced.
Arianna just doesn’t understand the Timmeh…/s
apparently, g.e.’s media outlets have no research staff available — nor even lowly interns to search media archives. perhaps the daily show could loan them their video guy:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....27_pf.html
Well, if you’re a woman you must be spectacular looking and blond. If you’re a guy, not so much.
Timmeh reportedly won’t allow any of the NBC or MSNBC shows to book Arianna for her book tour, either. She reportedly had bookings with Countdown and with the MSNBC morning folks, and he had them both canceled.
So boobs matter, male pattern baldness doesn’t?
More like, Timmeh, meet the intern with internets skillz. I’m sure someone could find it. You have only to ask.
Terry McAuliffe on MSNBC is spouting the HRC line about her staying in the race and how Obama can’t win.
McAuliffe is a tool, there’s no doubt about it. According to him WV, KY and Puerto Rico will put HRC over the top.
i think it was martin who also posted the complete audios of the two wright sermons (911 and confusing god and government). good for him.
Every time I see Russert on the television screen I swear it looks like his nose is about to take over his face..
Perhaps we should start a petition drive demanding major network news companies post a job description on the internet for each individual on their staff.
What IS your job, Mr. Alter?
it’s not stupid though, it’s by design
they will always find an excuse to punish the democrat and ignore the republican given the same information
it’s not stupid it’s by design
Yes, that is for why the snark!
Something like that. Sigh.
came in late last night, and this was the first thing I saw on the box -
am so glad C & L caught it - should prove useful “in time” :D
I don’t watch TV, but when I see a photo of him, I find myself wondering if he’s just finished or getting ready to bit his own ear.
HRC loans cash to their campaign via her checkbook. She is not “elitist” though, right?
what about manboobs?
A straight line that deserves a thoughtful reply . . . stand by . . . .
But…but…that asking is hard work… *g*
It’s typical MSM inanity and dishonesty. They manufacture a story, hype it endlessly, and then refuse to take any responsibility for the fallout from it.
This brings up an issue. The Democratic nominee (and that probably means Obama) is going to have to run against not just John McCain but the Russert filled media, and once in office is going to have to govern with these same nitwits mindlessly bloviating over every move he makes.
Even Noron smells blood in the water with respect to HRC. If that dimwit can figure it out, certainly an actual Clinton will break the code.
You know, ES, this is a great point (you’re welcome :P)
These pundits, why are they qualified to bring us the news wrapped in their opinions and not the (gasp) blogs? because it’s schoolyard snobbery. My opinion counts, yours doesn’t.
What a bunch of crap. Scrape the whole bunch.
It’s going to be a long, stupid slog to November…
On MSNBC, George McGovern was just interviewed. He has called Bill Clinton advising him that the campaign should end, and got from the Big Dawg, a fat, resounding “NO!”
Jeebus - she needs 75% of the outstanding delegates, an impossibility, and she won’t go away.
At this point, she is officially hurting the party.

Well, and there is that youth thing, too. The last female reporter who I think actually looked her age (I do not think Barbra Walters counts because she hasn’t looked her age in years) is…Aline Saarinen(remember her - the Today Show, early 60s).
it’s not for bill to break the story it’s for hillary, bill needs to just keep saying she’s in it until she says she is not
let’s see what she says, though I fear you are right
Absolutely. I think Obama could be the Jackie Robinson of national politics. JR had to be an awesome baseball player and a strong enough character to stand up to the extra crap coming his way.
OT-Terry McAuliffe just said on MSNBC that Hillary WILL NOT be dropping out. Either she has a coup in mind, or she simply want to destroy Obama so the path is clear for her in 2012. There is no other reason for her to go on.
Word is that she has several meetings with supporters and pledged superdelegate types today and tomorrow. It’s going to take more than just McGovern saying she needs to get out — but you are absolutely correct that Bill (or any other person close to her, for that matter) isn’t going to break that news. If and when it comes, she will be the one to break it…
Notice that knowledge and intelligence has no role in being a talking head.
(In my own small way, I tried to add intelligence & look my age when I was a Wall St. talking head economist. But that’s just me.)
Yes, a dinner guest that brought her toothbrush and a clean pair of underwear…
“…there really is no excuse for this level of boobery.”
Well, you know what the say, the bigger the boobs the dumber the man.
Well, look at it this way - except for the doctors doing medical and healthcare reporting, how many actualy experts are there out there reporting on their field in either tv or radio? At Firedoglake, we have actual economists and attorneys — that puts us way ahead.
They have quite a few attorneys doing legal reporting, but I can’t say how many of them have actual trial or appellate experience, to be honest. And, quite frankly, I cannot watch Nancy Grace or “Judge Judy” types, so I can’t speak to that…
And talk through your nose….that seems to have become an additional job requirement these days. :-(
And all along I thought they were talking thru their asses.
Most of what I’ve been hearing lately seems to be from a source bit further south…
o/t I loved it when Arianna went on an early episode of Colbert. She was imploring him to come onto HP. “Join us, Stephen, come with us” reaching out to put her hand on his.
His reply?
“Your touch burns me.”
Jeez. I’m starting to have visions of them in a small frame house in Denver, surrounded by delegates trying to talk them out with a bullhorn.
Not that you went around asking the reporters at the Libby trial - I wonder how many of them had the background to do the job that YOU did for us there? As I recall, weren’t more than a few of them reading your live blogging?
Wow. What a convenient excuse for teh timmeh who has to explain why the unbalanced coverage of Hagee and Wright. Too bad it isn’t true. Asshat.
You owe me a diet Pepsi.
You beat me to that one.
Mweee heeee — Now that should have come with a spew warning…
Well, it would take some intelligence to dig deep and say, “well, it’s different when it’s a Republican.”
btw Christy -
that celebrity plastic surgery slide show left Timmeh out - allow me
“eyebrows excessively elevated and arched possibly due to an endoscopic browlift, facial skin too smooth for his age, his skin is excessively smooth as if he’s had laser treatments and chemical peels”
Yeah, I plugged FDL on Green 960 when they were doing a show about blogs last week. TeddySF tossed me a biscuit for being a good firepup. I mentioned the Libby trial and rule of law stuff and the terrific community here.
Blogs will save us!
Can we start a campaign to send YouTubes of Hagee’s comments to Timmeh? Surely they’re out there somewhere, and maybe if MSNBC is deluged with them…
Oh, nevermind. Timmeh will just find another excuse, won’t he?
Not many of them had legal background, that’s true. And a number of them told us they were reading the blog for legal definitions and analysis so they could understand what had been going on in the lead up to the trial — and also for Marcy’s background during the liveblogging and my sum ups and such. I know there were several who asked questions during the course of the trial — in person and via e-mail.
But, honestly, I’d rather them ask or try to find it out and tried to encourage that by giving straight out answers and not trying to spin them on what the law or the facts were. The ones who were asking questions or reading were much, much better than the ones who could have given a shit whether they got it right and were, instead, serving as spin steno…
btw firedogs -
there was some talk last night about HRC remaining in through WV - so as to save BO embarassment at losing there to a non competitor - way above my paygrade but that might be what is going on
Or at least make our demise less lonely.
Don’t forget the FOX episode last week where the intern went looking for a video clip of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates and couldn’t find one!
S/he did return with a picture of Frederick Douglass, though to show that Abe ran against a Negro!
These people are owned by the masters of media who give them their agenda and talking points. Rupert Murdochs mind extension. The media Moguls ideas are oh so ugly that they hire a pretty face to spin their yarns. It is bedtime stories for the Not Think people that are used to being told what to think. It is so much easier that way. no reading, no research np hard decisions. Ya gotta deal with it. And remember the attention span of an imbecile is hard to capture! Just sayin doen’t make it right. You can buy the books but you can not make them read them.
There’s the *perfect* explanation…that image is gonna be in the front of my brain every time I flip thru channels in the future. Unsure whether to say “Thank you” or not. *g*
That was, without a doubt, the funniest damn thing I saw in ages. And I cannot believe that no one — NO ONE — caught it while it was on the air. Just a perfect summary of all that is Faux News…
That was Dana Perino.
Ah Christy! you use one of my very favorite phrase:
Really says it all right there.
yeah true. I’m sure he willfind some new faux outrage to umm (what’s the word I’m looking for…no, it’s not reporting…ummm) enrage the mindless
Methink old Helen of the Whitehouse press corps is one of the most beautiful women in American politics. Give me a courageous mind…beauty is such a trap.
Christy - one of the truly wonderful things about FDL - and everything you and Jane and LHP and Ian and David and(I can’t remember everyone - but there are a lot of truly intelligent, professional commentors as well who bring so much to this forum)everyone does - is that this place has become this really FINE resource for information and analysis. I talk about you whenever I buttonhole the Congress folks and their local assistants - I tell them that this is the place to come if they want the unvarnished stuff, information that is untainted, information that they can use. I appreciate you guys so much.

I put it in just for you, baby! *g*
is our childrens learning?
you are joking right? I mean no one is that…oh, wait. nevermind.
Just don’t get inTimmehdated when he does.
Aw, thanks, Toby. Much appreciated! We sure do try…
Second that!
O/T Hey Christy
Chelsea and Hillary are in your state today.
;})
The Pinochhio nose that grows when you fib.
Put on your hip waders.
The link you have says that his replacement could likely be Jon Meacham of Newsweek or David Ignatius. Somehow I can’t get too excited about choices like these.
I don’t ever watch him on purpose. ususally I’m somewhere, they have it on and the receptionist can’t find the remote to change the channel
Bill was here last week. I got some pix from the rally that he did — was hoping there would be an Obama one as well, but there hasn’t been one. So I may tra la down to the local Obama HQ and snap some pix for you guys to give you a taste of the circus coming to WV.
I think Hillary and Chelsea are in Charleston, which is a couple hours south of me…
Enjoy the circus! Are folks excited?
it is in Shepherdstown (sp?) WV.
Ahhh..must be Charleston tomorrow, then…
I’m sure he will have a lil someting happening there. I’ll be phonebanking so don’t be surprised if I call ya *g*
They seem to be getting there. I’m starting to see yard signs crop up, and both campaigns have offices in my town with folks making GOTV calls and such. It’s good to see activity during a primary, I have to say…
Oh woe is Timmeh ranked 5th on teh google.
So I may tra la down to the local Obama HQ and snap some pix for you guys to give you a taste of the circus coming to WV.
well, they obviously just left Indiana, so the circus moves on. May I advise - catch all you can in person - it’s a ton of fun.
Thus far, they haven’t scheduled anything — which is a mistake, in my book. Al Gore took WV for granted in the primary in 2000, and it came back to bite him in the ass in the general. I queried the Obama folks this morning on whether they had any WV plans, but nothing is set as yet…
OT there is a good article up at the NYT on Israeli Arabs. It could have used more facts and figures but it is a good overview.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05.....ref=slogin
I hope that they will. Hell, I know they will have some things scheduled. If I hear anything along my grapevine, I’ll give you a heads up
If you want to discuss something nervy and unnerving, here’s what Bob Schieffer said week for his end of show comment! Apparently he hasn’t been paying attention for quite some time but just woke up from a long sleep. (I was more than a little bit pissed, since Russert announced in court what Journalism’s new methods were!)
Go watch the video on the Face the Nation website. The opinion was aired on 5/4/2008. These people seem to be just exhibitionist enough to enjoy running around naked for all the world to see!
Well said Toby.
But, sometimes, through the facts, and the brilliant analysis it gets here, some hack like me will say that he thinks that “he likes Jane with her present hairdo much more than with the long hair on the fine video featured up top”. ;-))
Speaking of Bad Reporters
Just needed to point out that, of course, Tim Russert is still Dick Cheney’s bitch!
If you want a welcome relief from the thought of russert, Bill Moyers is getting major air time on Democracy Now today. Good stuff!
Man, now that’s juice!
Able to ‘query’ Obama folks. Impressive.
I knew I was hangin’ out at the
rightcorrect place!“tool” is being way too kind. This is a family-oriented blog so I won’t offer a replacement.
I don’t have the stomach to watch the Sunday political shows. Does anyone know what the viewership is like?
That is correct. They are clearly marked.
Russert makes decisions about who appears on other people’s shows???
Well, both campaigns do have internet outreach, so…I just try and take advantage of it to get clarification and information as much as possible. I figure going to the source, rather than relying on anonymous rumors and innuendos is always preferable. *G*
He’s the News bureau chief for DC, so apparently, yes.
