– Pam Spaulding and BlueNC are providing live coverage of the NC primary starting at 7 pm ET. Thanks, Pam!
– In case you were wondering whether John McCain would start to show his true colors and support for the most extreme elements in the GOP, wonder no more. PFAW previews his speech from today on judges. And gives some thoughts on the continuation of the Bush judicial philosophy under McCain here. That ought to make Gary Bauer very pleased, indeed. Jonathon Singer seems to think it’s a step or two backward.
– As for circling the GOP wagons — take a gander at Sam Brownback and Fred Thompson being trotted out like well-groomed show ponies to vouch for McCain’s bona fides to the wingnuttiest among us. Still wondering whether they are shoring things up for the general election and if lockstep is even a question? Try this on for size:
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will launch a new push Tuesday to ingratiate himself with social conservatives who mistrust him but whose support is vital to his hopes of winning the White House.
Right-wing leaders, who know he needs their backing, are working on a list of demands to pin him down on choosing judges with a conservative philosophy.
The two sides are engaged in a minuet that will determine the shape of this year’s Republican presidential platform.
Seeking to overcome the right’s persistent mistrust, McCain will speak Tuesday on the importance of nominating conservative jurists to the federal courts, including the Supreme Court.
Along with abortion, this is one of the few areas where the candidate agrees with leading social conservatives.
Hail to James Dobson, eh, McCain? In case you need more information to determine how important this issue is going into November, Peter Edelman provided a whole lot to think about here. And if you need more? Try this from Balkinization on for size. (H/T to scribe.)
– Digby talks sex (and not in a good way…).
– I’ve found the long-lost video of the John McCain/Joe Lieberman Buddies On Parade Tour. And it ain’t pretty.
– The Sunlight Foundation has more on secret goverment laws.
– How is it that the NYTimes can have two stories on the Democratic candidates, and in one Hillary Clinton is portrayed as a savvy political operative for positioning herself on blue collar issues, and in the other Barack Obama is portrayed as an awkward and disingenuous for doing the same exact thing? And the WaPo trots out the same theme. Thoughts? Could it be something as simple as how the campaign staff interacts with the media, because I’ve heard a few complaints about Obama’s staff interface with media folks and, sad to say, the media stroking clearly can make a difference. (See, e.g., McCain and ribs.) Or is there a difference in how the campaigns have been working the electorate in IN and NC? DailyHowler dissects some of this.
– Holy hell, the financial markets are so screwed up. So much so that Bernanke is talking publicly about it again. Just reading the latest at Calculated Risk is guaranteed to give you a case of the hives. And folks who are living in poverty aren’t exactly covered in viable options at the moment. But I suppose I can always get a new tube of lipstick to cheer me up…
– Laura Rozen indicates that signs point to the US pulling out of talks with Iran on Iraq. And BagNewsNotes hits the visual nail on the head. Meanwhile, things are still not going swimmingly in Afghanistan.
What’s catching your eye in the news or on the blogs today? And, if you live in IN or NC, how were things when you voted — give us the local scoop!

another day, another primary
christy, thanks for the link fest! waiting w/ bated breath for primary results today …
Ack, gotta fly — will be back to read these linkies later. Hopefully the pointless poo will stop flying as the last thread winds down.
Morning, Christy. Back from a night at the hospital with my sister, so I’m not caught up yet. Thanks for all the good links.
Sorry to hear about your sister. Hugs, Lindy…
John will say he will apoint judges like Scalia which is GOP code for abortion rights are gone.
F him We need our Presidential Candidates to say we will appoint Judges to the Supreme Court like Thurgood Marshall and then compare his qualifications to Justice Roberts. Scalia and Thomas Bahahaha!
bom dia, pups
done with the last of my GOTV phone banking. I’m burned out and need a break. thank goodness there are a few weeks before the next one.
BTW did anyone watch the Clinton/O’Reily interview? If so, I have a question.
sam seder had some brit on recently who is going to be testifying before conyers, I think that’s today by the way
anyway, this guy says the real reason the “cia” liked 24 is that it set the “envirnment” where the public would accept the torture policy
and I maintain it’s not the real cia that wanted to torture it was cheney’s “team b”
the real professionals know that you lose infromation through torture you don’t get it
Haven’t checked the thread on the last post to see if it’s there but have y’all seen this one?
(Can’t get the linky to work….it was the first post over at Kos a few minutes ago)
Laptops missing at State Dept.
I missed it — but it did not get rave reviews from folks I know who watched it. *g*
I saw something on that in the news the other day — something like 400 laptops that were meant to be lent out for anti-terrorism cooperative efforts or something. Because the information on those is just what you want to have floating around without supervision…
O.o
I was wondering about the exchange she had with him over not wanting to tax the middle class. He stated that he didn’t care because he was rich and she replied with something to the effect of God Bless us rich people. I watched it twice because I was sure she was being sarcastic but now ….. I just wanted someone else’s take on it.
We can only look good in such a comparison the GOP then has to explain to moderate voters why their choices are less qualified and fight the impression that they were only chosen because they will vote against abortion rights.
This myth that a candidate for the Supreme Court must have no opinion on a matter before the court is a fiction, at best they have no paper trail.
So lets force the issue on judges damm the 30%ers they are not voting with us no matter what we do so lets let the majority of Americans get what they want for a change.
No more GOP divide and conquer so the rich benefit.
We want Abortion rights, we want the War Over now, we want National Healthcare.
If anything Obama and Hilary are BOTH to the right of the majority of the voters!
I know the campaign tried to clarify it later as her meaning “well, God bless you.” in the sort of sarcastic way that I just ended my Liddy Dole post. Having done a little live tv, it is tough to sometimes get out exactly what you mean to say on the spot like that — it’s a bit nervewracking — so I could see misspeaking on something like that.
But I didn’t see it. And folks who did and have posted on it say that what she said was pretty clearly stated — as “God bless us.” But I don’t have a definitive answer on it, not having seen it myself…

Great quotes with the Pictures!
Yup, gotta be the same. Linky at Kos is from cqpolitics – 2 May.
“As many as 400″……..
I didn’t want to judge her comments based on my wee bit of ill will I have for her campaign at the moment rather on its true merit. Thanks

I love you more than i can say….for years..just wow
Christy –
posted your financial markets link earlier – love that nothing to see here, fears are “baseless” pose
WSJ says there’s plenty to see there
for my fellow financial illiterates – the graphic on the front page of Christy’s link lays it out quite clearly – oy
I have to say that Hillary’s comment made me a bit queasy.
Well, Don Young just actually said he supported a Gasoline Tax increase to make people conserve fuel over at the “Rising Diesel Prices” Hearing brfore the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Highways & Transit Subcommittee.
Chairman DeFazio asked the person from Public Citizen if they were founded by Ralph Nader. Defazio said, ” I won’t burden you with my opinion of the effect Mr. Nader has had on the environment as a result of the 2000 election!”
A lot of folks who saw it seemed to feel that way, from what I read. But I missed the broadcast, so it’s tough for me to say on my own having not seen it…
i betcha …LIDDY says it to BOB all the time….God Bless us we are REALLY rich, and HEARTLESS
Yeah, I don’t need to seeit again. I just wanted input as to what others took away from her comment. I actually watched to the whole interview and it was vacuous but that exchange really puzzled me.
McCain will seek judges like Roberts, Alito
Tuesday May 6, 2008 6:16 am
Source: Reuters
Published: http://www.reuters.com/article…..3920080506
WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (Reuters) – Republican presidential candidate John McCain said on Tuesday he would appoint judges in the mold of conservatives John Roberts, Samuel Alito and former Chief Justice William Rehnquist if he were elected in November.
In an excerpt from a speech McCain was to give in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, the Arizona senator said he would “look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law, and a proven commitment to judicial restraint.”
“I will look for people in the cast of John Roberts, Samuel Alito, and my friend the late William Rehnquist — jurists of the highest caliber who know their own minds, and know the law, and know the difference,” McCain said.
Roberts, the current chief justice, and Alito were both named to the U.S. Supreme Court by Republican President George W. Bush. Legal experts say they have helped move it to the right. The court has the final word on questions of U.S. law and its rulings affect the rights of all Americans.
The court has been closely divided between liberal and conservative factions on such contentious issues as abortion, the death penalty and church-state separation. Republicans and Democrats have battled frequently over judicial nominations, which must be voted on by the U.S. Senate.
McCain angered some conservatives in 2005 when he joined with a group of Democratic and Republicans senators on a compromise that averted a threat by leaders in the then-Republican-led Senate to prevent Democrats from blocking consideration of Bush’s conservative judicial nominees.
In his speech on Tuesday, McCain criticized his Democratic rivals, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, for voting against the nominations of Roberts and Alito.

What Scalia is to controversial now? Has the GOP done polling is Scalia a loser now who drags McCain down even lower?
San Diego is my absolute FAV. Great work.
yeh that will teach working class people who have to drive to get to and from work to not be so damn wasteful. That is a real myopic solution. We have to attack the demand but also ween to another fuel alternative and invest in renewable energy research and development..I could go on ad nauseam.
what DRIBBLES out of this so called…VERY SMART woman….is just jaw dropping imo…she is TEH dense to say that when people are selling personal possesions TO FILL,THEIR GAS TANKS…………..sheeeeeeeeeesh
neat, sounds like he’ll nominate Yoo.
Ellison nailing Rivkin on the ticking time bomb bs
Re NC voting. It’s possible to vote early here and the Dem vote has been very heavy. There are also primary races on the Republican side for governor and in some House races which will increase overall turnout.
Be sure to watch the results from the primary for NC-10. This is the seat of that little twerp, Patrick McHenry, a DeLay clone. There are many personall questions about the way he operates and he has lost the endorsement of many Repubs in that red district.
Whoever wins the Rethug primary will have a formidable newcomer, Daniel Johnson, as an opponent. This could be a pick up for the Dems with a really, truly great guy in the seat.
Duncan had a good piece at Eschaton on the economic myopia that is the gas tax rebate theory — it would amount to…maybe…$40. And would do next to nothing, because that rebate would get passed on in higher gas prices, as I recall what he was saying.
snark from Cohen – yeah I know of time bomb cases – the tv show 24
I wanted to implore folks here to contact your local dem party and volunteer to be a poll observer for the November elections.
oh noooooooooooooooooooozzzzzzzzze,a muslim man,run for your life
Yay — about time someone did.
“..know their own minds, and know the law, and know the difference..” OMG – is McCain saying that if someone knows the law, but in his own mind is willing to take a hardened conservative Right Wing position, that he’d choose that person based on that? That the person would know the difference but would be willing to use their personal political philosophy to bend the law? Sick, McCain..really sick.
By the way Christy, regarding the link I posted Saturday to a talk by Bobby Kennedy at the Commonwealth Club, I noticed that the audio links aren’t working, although the transcripts are still there. They’re in the process of making much more of their pre-2001 archive available, so maybe things are just being reorganized and not everything’s been updated yet. In the meantime, I sent you a facebook message for how to listen to the copy of the talk that I made for myself back when I first discovered it.
people with rocks are meeting HARD PLACES,and im just very sad…cause so many other things are gonna suffer, money raised for pets, charities, green projects, wild animals…EVERYONE IS SUFFERING
At first glance, those numbers seem really bad. However, they are in Bush dollars, not real dollars. If we are able to return to the real dollar standard, we’ll be in better shape. Sadly, McCain and Clinton seem happy to remain on the Bush dollar.
there was a reliable poll late last week showing 61% weren’t falling for the gas tax flim flam
yea he has brain rot,of what little he had to start with
Laptops have become like the bars of soap and bath towels people take out of hotel rooms.
Ok, so I wasn’t the only one that took it that way. Yes, I’m an Obama supporter/ volunteer but I still try to give her the benefit of the doubt. I’m trying to put all these things into some sort of larger context but I’m failing miserably and don’t like that her campaign is using right wing web sites to push stories about her dem opponent to the MSM, or that they are alienating specific groups of dem voters, etc.
WHEN YOU GOT BILLIONS you are immune to HARDSHIP
who is congresscritter up now ?
The Clintons remind me of rope a dope in Zaire. Heavy favorites but totally unwrapped and unraveled by a superior campaigner. I am waiting for the knock out by Obama and there the analogy fails somewhat. Additionally, the persistent support for the Clintons who act like state fair grifters offering a teddy bear/gas tax relief, space balls with their threat to destroy Iran and take apart OPEC, bad and stupid liars with their sniper fire charade and then it comes their new found base, poor white folks with less than a high school education. Lots of those in Chappaqua, New York.
Obama ain’t no Dole or Bush with Perot. Expect Obama to win the presidency with more than the 43% achieved by the Clintons first time around. I also think he will effectively marginalize the Clintons going forward and he will do it truthfully and positively. What a relief he is.
Hillary couldn’t possibly have meant it that way…
…as far as I know.
…I have no reason to believe she hates the middle class. I take her at her word. Just like the Bosnia story.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=LHFREDHB-nQ
ya know somebody on the last thread, said it well,NOW WE REALLY know the Clintons…i used to love the guy,and respect her muchly…NOW I KNOW THEM for who they really are,and it is ugly
never mind – it’s King (T – New York)
trying to spin earning prisoner trust (oprah winfrey approach) doesn’t work
Ms Cohen admirably keeping him on task – “contractors”, “highest levels of our govt.”
Damn. I hadn’t seen it. What the heck does that mean? It was said in a sort of wide-eyed fashion of extreme agreement, like expressing some profound truth. Oh well, I’m sure she couldn’t mean anything which would be injurious to the low-info white male voters.
here ya go
bonkers May 6th, 2008 at 8:34 am 167
I think this primary season has been fantastic!
Finally, the DLC/Clinton charade is crashing down hard, and many more Dems are hip to what’s been happening. This is true with BigMedia as well, and hopefully this will lead to further growth of the New Media. It’s funny to read through comments at Barack’s site, where there are so many people involved and aware of these issues for the first time. Lotz of “I can’t believe Bill Clinton said that and that I used to support him!” or “I thought Chris Matthews was one of the better ones, but now I see he’s a total buffoon!” Good stuff and a necessary part of our progress.
Along with the overt and covert racism and sexism bubbling up, all this stuff needed to happen for us to move beyond it. It’s wild how so many of these issues have intersected at the same time. A Perfect Storm if you will…
Krugman has some interesting thoughts on what he describes as the Gas Tax Hysterics–he is more sympathetic to HRC, of course, but, as usual, makes some good points:
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.c…..hysterics/
thanks for the tidbits from the hearing pups.
it is refreshing but it is also sad that my opinion of the Clintons has fallen so low because of her campaign tactics. What is truly disturbing is whether this is the result of campaigning or whether this is really who they are and I’m just seeing it for the first time.
Damn. I hadn’t seen it. What the heck does that mean?
—-
it means imo
I GOT MINE (and my kid and brothers) so the rest of ya
CAN GO POUND SAND…….chuckle, chuckle, smile smile…lurrrrrrrve Columbia
King – ‘might this oprah winfrey approach prolly extending Jihadists influence for years ?’
Sands – not the point, errors were made, must be exposed, corrections need to be made
King – “none of UK torturers were prosecuted”
You scare me!
I would have thought that too but she has alienated other groups in order to pander to others so…..? I honestly don’t know.
she wants to OBLITERATE peeps…i kinda think that gives ya an idea
Yeah..go pound sand, go kick rocks…either way deuces* you poor folks
* deuces = 2 = 2 fingers=peace –> peace out
by the way, the clarification was not for you, sadly. Just wanted to clarify for folks that might not know what that means
disturbing
cant believe she said it,AND…..she calls OBAMA an elitist
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha
don’t you think that is a little extreme?
Yes, I have the same questions. I voted for him twice and argued for him all during the impeachment. During the past seven years, his occasional speeches were like an oasis in the dessert of neoconnery. I was neutral at the beginning of the current runoff. But it seems like they view it as a now or never effort where anything goes. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I think they must have rationalized to believe they are desparately the best chance of righting all the country’s wrongs. That’s the only way I can maintain a mental frame to recover respect after this is over.
Thanks for all the kind words y’all… I really can’t emphasize enough how easy and fun it is to do: just make large text and put it up where people will see it.
Anything you can see while driving is a place you can put a sign. The trick is to have a bunch of signs to begin with of course, but making signs is fun too… I probably wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t. You get to use “art”.
Peace out everyone, I’ll be doing California for the next month or so at least.
I hate being negative. I have been on top of the Clintons ever since I “worked” with them in the McGovern campaign in 72. Hillary who could speak a few words of Spanish in 72 claimed in this campaign to have done voter registration in Texas in 72 during the McGovern campaign, Uh huh, (when Bill ran Texas for McGovern). Obama leaves me with positive feelings. He knows who he is. That’s a start. And Obama has outed the Clintons, brilliant job.
she is EXTREME and knee jerk responsive imo…BHO not so much
I’m past the point of no return in terms of respect. They have lost it. That is not to say that it can’t be earned again but it will require a lot of work
and lest we forget the EXTENDED family
Six years ago, the launch of Hillary Clinton’s career in the US Senate was marred by allegations that her brothers had received payments from people pardoned by President Bill Clinton in the waning months of his presidency.
Now, in the wake of the launch of her presidential campaign, the pardon controversy has reemerged in an obscure court case in which Senator Clinton’s brother Tony is battling an order to repay more than $100,000 he received from a couple pardoned by President Clinton.
Tony Rodham, who acknowledged approaching the president about a pardon for the couple, is the second of Hillary Clinton’s brothers to receive money from people who were eventually pardoned by President Clinton. Hugh Rodham received $400,000 from two people, one of whom was pardoned and one whose sentence was commuted.
i really had NO IDEA,what their internal character was,i just liked em,cause they wer 2 smart people who happened to be DEMS,now i know forever WHO they really are
Well, I think we’re in the same position. However, I refuse to say all the Clinton haters of the 90’s may have been right about anything. Also, I need to keep a frame of mind that will allow me to go out and vote against McCain and the Republicans under any circumstances. It’s hard.
I’m rarely surprised by anything people do, especially politicians
Good to hear about some or your background. I had wondered.
there is just soooooooooooooo much money involved..it changes most people, who arent REALLY grounded imo
Hi everyone.
Going OT with apologies.
Sadlyyes, I’ve been waiting to encounter you on the toobz again.
This link helped me the other day. It’s so beautiful on so many levels, I hope you may enjoy it also. Stick with it right to the end. It gets better and better.

From November 2007 through the end of February 2008, the Obama campaign was very superior to the Clinton operation. In particular, Obama personally campaigned at a level of excellence that I have never witnessed before.
Since March of this year, the Obama campaign and Obama have lost some of their edge. Contrarily, Clinton’s campaign and Clinton have improved their game. At this point, I would not agree that Clinton has been “totally unwrapped and unraveled by a superior campaigner.” As such, I really don’t agree with your “rope a dope” analogy.
just a superior HUMAN being imo
I’m sure you do. Thank you for your involvement. I’m sure it’s often not easy.
Comes down to one foot in front of the other sometimes, but we’ll never stop. eh?
I fail to see how there has been an improvement unless you mean in getting MSM exposure, getting her spin out, etc. As far as quality, it has been horrible to watch someone I used to respect piss it away
Go watch the fight. Foreman was ahead on points when he got knocked out by Ali and he was plenty angry and frustrated when he got ko’d. The Clintons have only had Rev Wright. Otherwise Obama has been letting the Clintons punch herself out, she does not have the strength she had at the beginning of the campaign and while her punches sound and look furious, they are actually not going to win the fight for her. But I agree with you that Obama should not try to win on points. That would not be rope a dope.
It’s been a horribly draining, long long campaign. We voted for Obama and still far prefer him, but I’ll be danged if slight bobbles largely caused by exhaustion and mind – numbing repetition in front of today’s all-seeing media will cause us to fault either of the Democratic candidates, especially considering the frightening prospect of mcsame as the alternative.
When this all shakes out, we WILL vote Democratic all the way through our ballot.
A lot of people heavy into religion use “bless” instead of “blessed”. I think she was using the phrase partly as a contrast to Wright (”God damn America”…note present tense/active) , but also to indicate an “ongoing blessing”. But why not use “blesses”? Because it’s in the passive…(God Bless America).
I can only hope to think she meant “blessed” as she does go on to talk about the responsibility of those that are granted opportunities and wealth to help those with less means. What gets me is that a lot of these folks use the present tense when it comes to religious issues…and it really screws up their meanings and intents to us common English speakin’ folks.
But part of this is another snipe at Obama…but so subtle and coded that it backfired.
I will vote if she is the nominee but I don’t respect her or her campaign. That will have to be earned.
In total agreement with you. My cringe reflex is almost worn to a frazzle.
We were already won over by Barack, and then got to “know” Michele more through watching her speeches and interviews. What an amazing first lady she will make. Woo Hoo!
Just voted (NW Indiana) and the polling place was very quiet. The poll worker I spoke to said “It’s been busy off and on.” I was voter #239 according to the machine, but I have no idea how big the precinct is. Local NPR station interviewed someone who said they’ve had a lot bigger turnout so far than in the last election (I think referring to 2004).
Well, boosterism and analysis are different things. Each has its place, but it is important not to confuse them.
That is awesome news. thanks for the ground report.
Agree with all your points. I’ve also become an Obama supporter and cringe to think what she would have pulled out against any one of my preferred candidates. She’s a real “scorched earth” politician and has recently been using every pandering trick in the book…particularly using really dangerous “tough talk” (e.g. annihilating Iran…what about the NIE on Iran that says there is no intel supporting the presence of nuclear weapons programs).
And is threatening shutting down OPEC going to do anything more than get them to retaliate defensively. It’s hard to keep people from “communicating”. Catch then talking and we nuke or invade them? Yeah…that worked real well in Iraq. And what would happen if there was no OPEC? I think we can see where that would lead in terms of the environment and sustainable energy use.
No danger of that with me. She has been able to more effectively get her message out but it’s the content of the messages that I have a problem with.
I don’t gut react to what she says, rather I try to look at the context, wider implications, etc. As of late, the rule seems to be alienate and dismiss. hard to rally behind that as a campaign
Could that be because of the high absentee and early voting that has already occurred. That might actually reduce “day of” voting. Early/absentee voting was over a half million (that’s 50% of the total of the last Presidential Primary in Indiana). Most of those came from Marion, Lake, Monroe, Vigo, St. Jos, Vandenberghe Counties. Many of those are large University centers…or in the Chicago area. That might bode well for Obama.
It will also screw up people trying to do the exit polls, since the high number of early voters/absentees will liely be demographically different than those taking exit surveys.
Must go, with reluctance. I’d rather stay at the Lake with you guys. Our telly will stay off for the day and eve. If I need updates, I know full well to come here, heh.
Meanwhile, our burgeoning population of migrant birdies would really appreciate me picking up s’more oil sunflower seed and, in honor of the season and the day, our septic system “died” & we get to stand around watching a surprisingly pleasant and upbeat guy put things back to rights.
I guess we have apparently now decided what to do with our big whoopteedoo bonus from dumbya. Seems oddly appropriate. Would that a new aerator and a good strong pump would solve the problems of his making. I can dream.
Wonder how much it would cost to send the old worn-out ones to the nit, tied with a big sloppy bow.
BTW, did anyone else besides me watch the very Mrs. dumbya’s speech on
MyanmarBURMA, and find it offensive and outrageously loaded with political snippyness toward the world at large? Yikes. January 20 ‘09 can’t come soon enough!?!P.E.A.C.E.
Please don’t get me wrong. I give them both a pass on style at this point. I’m amazed they’re even coherent after such a long tough campaign. In the past, there wasn’t so much on-the-spot fact-checking and analysis of style – must be very wearing.
My cringing is to Hill’s content, not the style.
appropriate indeed.
While we are all waiting, the essays of Sam Smith like this one:
http://prorev.com/badtimes.htm
are well worth reading.
I would like to see Obama take Indiana. It would end this contest. Unfortunately, I don’t think it is going to happen. Since March 1, this race has been about demographics. The demographic reality of Indiana simply is not favorable to Obama. Only 11% of the Democratic electorate is AA. Obama will get some geographic push in NW Indiana, but not enough to carry him to victory.
This hasnothing to do with style. This has to do with the content of her campaign. I still don’t see how it has been expediate to pander to the bubba vote at the expense of other parts of the dem base.
Another Sam Smithism::
http://prorev.com/wbhat.htm
agreed. honest! *g*
and the demographics for Hillary with blacks isn’t good either. Why isn’t anyone talking about that? She can’t win the GE without them.
wow. preview button. I should try it next time.
expedient
gofigure. i hadn’t even noticed. *g*
I thought it was race baiting to talk about who blacks vote for.
They’re certainly not going to vote for McCain, btw. Can’t much say that for the blue collar whites, though, who are voting for Clinton but not Obama.
This taken from Pam’s site with a bit of analysis of my own.
Well here’s some real data (at last) from the NC Sec of States Office on the absentee/one-stop voters.
First some context.
[That might seem good for Clinton, but see below]
[Which means that blacks are disproportionately voting early- they make up 22% of the population]
[Which suggests that 37.6% of the total sample are non-White females…very high proportionate to their population [62% of the female sample]; Black males are outnumbered by white males 15% to 23% but that’s still 39% of the male sample]
This likely suggests that this is an organized effort by the Obama campaigns reaching out to Democrats, encouraging them to vote early, rather than just walk ups. If this turnout is mirrored in the general on-site turnout then it will likely be an Obama landslide.
BTW Beware any exit polling…large numbers of those Registered as Republican have been allowed to cast Provisional ballots in the Democratic race (which only allows Democrats and Independants to do so. If these people have not changed their registration it could mean that those taking exit poll surveys may provide a false picture of those who actually voted legitimately. In addition the early voters would not be surveyed and they form a substantial, and likely different, demographic pool from the walk-ups.
oy vay. I never said it was race baiting and i’m the one asking the question. I’m not going to go into this with you but to make my point claer. If the pundits and wanna be pundits are going to talk about blue collar white voters as a votng block that is hurtng Obama, they also have to talk about the black voters voting at a high percentage for Obama and not Hillary. She can’t win in november without this group and no one is talking about this.
that is an impressive amount of new folks registering as dems. Certainly does take some of the bad taste out of my mouth.
thanks for the info and analysis. just have to now wait and see how it shakes out
You don’t recall all the hollering about race baiting in SC when Bill Clinton merely pointed out that the AA vote went to Jesse Jackson?
Since then, all I’ve seen is acknowledgment that Obama is getting 90% of the AA vote. I’m simply asking why it was race baiting when Clinton said it and it’s not when anyone says it about Obama. That’s all.
AS for the blue collar v. AA voting blocs, the AA vote is not a swing vote, the blue collar vote is. That’s the difference. It’s hard to imagine African Americans voting for McCain in November. It is not at all hard to imagine blue collar white males doing so.
addendum: one can’t any more assume that blacks will vote for Clinton if she is the nominee than white blue collars will vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee. the world, you see has many areas of grey.
It is not race baiting becuase the pundits have been talking about the black vote in regards to it breaking for Obama at increasingly high percentages. If we are talking about the GE and how certain blocks are going to break for candidates, this is a problematic block that the pundits have not discussed. She can’t win without them and that is a reality that everyone is going to have to come to terms with. Not talking about it doesn’t make it not a problem.
On that note, I’m off to another thread.
Exactly. But it was race baiting when Bill Clinton noted that AAs broke for Jesse Jackson.
I admit that I don’t understand the difference, why one was race baiting and the other isn’t.
AAs are not going to vote for McCain. So what I think you’re saying is that, if Clinton is the nominee, they’ll stay home. (Blue collar workers will vote for McCain). But I thought Obama was about unity. How does a major voting bloc for Obama staying home if he’s not the nominee represent unity? Sounds like spite.
Boy juno really jumps in with both feet again, eh?
movin’ back to drier land now….
Just seems that way because I look at Obama critically, which is unusual on this site.
Thanks for the ad about the National Conference for Media Reform (NCMF) coming up in Minnesota. I’ll pass that around to EVERYONE!
IT’S TIME PEOPLE! First 9-11 profiteering, then Iraq, then Iran and now race baiting – all with the sole purpose of drowning out the voices of the American people for the sake of a buck.
But as Ford, and Gm and the entire world ecomomy in general, and now even GE – all reported losses. Because THE BUCK STOPS WITH US!
In fury I came here to write about the spread of what I will now start calling -after seeing the Conference ad -start calling the “Medias Anti-American Disease”, or MAAD for short -and hope you all do too.
The network’s hard-ass anti-Obama rants and attacks aren’t about us or Hillary v Obama, or the country. It’s what’s in it for them- we know that.
But the ‘hosts’ themselves are also getting in on the ‘fun’, and border precariously on ‘hate’ speech’ under the guise of ‘news’. Lou Dobbs is a prime example of that – a dull bussiness show cancelled comes back to life as an old bitter white supremacist who now makes money for the shrunken heads of CNN by bashing Hispanics.
And Chris Matthews of MSNBC made it clear that he believes they need to continue to focus on Wright, and race -because their ratings were higher. Never mind people are angry as hell on each side and may be tuning in just to hear if he really is the ass-hole everyone says he is, never mind that this is an historic election year where we tune in to find some remnant of election news, and never mind that Olbermann’s success may be giving Matthwews or MSNBC or NBC the insane idea that they’ve become more popular, too.
Oh really NBC? Personally, after 20 devoted years – I haven’t tuned in to watch SNL, since their 2week long staged Hillary events.
But look how their hate seeps into every hole they find:
As I study at home, and to get away from all the cable hate talk, I recently began keeping CNN’s Headline News on low in the background. A simple channel with a ticker tape of news clips from around the world, I thought.
Just a while ago they interrupted the ticker of important news from Burma, for no apparent cause, to air a 2-3 minute anti-Wright/Obama and decidedly hateful commentary… from Glen Beck.
Not commentary from a political scholar, and no ‘breaking news event’ of any kind.
Absolutely no fu**ing reason or purpose at all, than to inflame the public -and the voters.
You can’t get any more viscious and hateful than that, had you had a burning cross in the background.
