Pam Spaulding and BlueNC are providing live coverage of the NC primary starting at 7 pm ET. Thanks, Pam!

– In case you were wondering whether John McCain would start to show his true colors and support for the most extreme elements in the GOP, wonder no more. PFAW previews his speech from today on judges. And gives some thoughts on the continuation of the Bush judicial philosophy under McCain here.  That ought to make Gary Bauer very pleased, indeed. Jonathon Singer seems to think it’s a step or two backward.

– As for circling the GOP wagons — take a gander at Sam Brownback and Fred Thompson being trotted out like well-groomed show ponies to vouch for McCain’s bona fides to the wingnuttiest among us. Still wondering whether they are shoring things up for the general election and if lockstep is even a question? Try this on for size:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will launch a new push Tuesday to ingratiate himself with social conservatives who mistrust him but whose support is vital to his hopes of winning the White House.

Right-wing leaders, who know he needs their backing, are working on a list of demands to pin him down on choosing judges with a conservative philosophy.

The two sides are engaged in a minuet that will determine the shape of this year’s Republican presidential platform.

Seeking to overcome the right’s persistent mistrust, McCain will speak Tuesday on the importance of nominating conservative jurists to the federal courts, including the Supreme Court.

Along with abortion, this is one of the few areas where the candidate agrees with leading social conservatives.

Hail to James Dobson, eh, McCain? In case you need more information to determine how important this issue is going into November, Peter Edelman provided a whole lot to think about here. And if you need more? Try this from Balkinization on for size. (H/T to scribe.)

Digby talks sex (and not in a good way…).

– I’ve found the long-lost video of the John McCain/Joe Lieberman Buddies On Parade Tour. And it ain’t pretty.

– The Sunlight Foundation has more on secret goverment laws.

– How is it that the NYTimes can have two stories on the Democratic candidates, and in one Hillary Clinton is portrayed as a savvy political operative for positioning herself on blue collar issues, and in the other Barack Obama is portrayed as an awkward and disingenuous for doing the same exact thing? And the WaPo trots out the same theme. Thoughts? Could it be something as simple as how the campaign staff interacts with the media, because I’ve heard a few complaints about Obama’s staff interface with media folks and, sad to say, the media stroking clearly can make a difference. (See, e.g., McCain and ribs.) Or is there a difference in how the campaigns have been working the electorate in IN and NC? DailyHowler dissects some of this.

– Holy hell, the financial markets are so screwed up. So much so that Bernanke is talking publicly about it again. Just reading the latest at Calculated Risk is guaranteed to give you a case of the hives. And folks who are living in poverty aren’t exactly covered in viable options at the moment. But I suppose I can always get a new tube of lipstick to cheer me up…

Laura Rozen indicates that signs point to the US pulling out of talks with Iran on Iraq. And BagNewsNotes hits the visual nail on the head. Meanwhile, things are still not going swimmingly in Afghanistan.
