This year could be a breakthrough year to truly
change the nature of dialogue and action in Washington, DC, and nationwide. On the tip of the tongue question: Will there be a super majority in the Senate (59 Democratic Party, One Socialist (Sanders), and the only Connecticut for Lieberman Senator)? One of those seemingly long-shot, now truly competitive races that could help achieve this change: the race for Alaska’s next Senator.
Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) is embroiled in controversy (and perhaps more). That is not the subject of this post.
Instead it is a moment to focus on his opponent, the next Senator from Alaska, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich with whom I just participated in a short bloggers’ call.
Two questions from me.
The first had nothing to do with energy, but instead about Senator Inouye’s fundraising for Ted Stevens: What have you heard from the national party, from the DSCC, and what do you expect? Begich certainly was on top of this. From that response (somewhat paraphrased):
Inouye and Ted Stevens are close friends. They are part of the 85-plus club, they’re part of a bunch of guys who’ve been around a hundred years.
When I heard about this, I waited 24 hours to calm down and then I called and left a message for Senator Schumer. … After all, do they want a 60 Senator majority or not? … When I do talk to Senator Schumer, I’ll let him know that whatever Inouye raises for Stevens, I’ll expect them to double it.
A straightforward, powerful response that recognizes the long-term Inouye/Stevens relationship but also clearly shows some backbone in desiring sensible national Democratic Party responses to the implications of that relationship.
Begich and Energy
To be honest, there are a lot of races, a lot of people out there. My life, 24/7, is not doing race analysis. And, Mark Begich finally announced just a short while ago. Visiting his campaign website, at this time, doesn’t give a great feel when it comes to energy and environmental issues.
Energy
A top problem Mark hears repeatedly about from Alaskans is the high price of heating Alaskans’ homes and fueling our vehicles. This in a state once proudly considered America’s energy storehouse. Mark will work across party lines to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development. He will fight for an Alaska Energy Policy that includes building an Alaska natural gas pipeline and also developing Alaska’s enormous renewable energy – hydro, tidal, geothermal and wind. With fellow mayors from Southcentral Alaska, Mark formed the Tri-Borough Commission which is spearheading a balanced Alaska energy policy emphasizing new development, conservation and renewable energy. Mark will work to restore Alaska as a major supplier of America’s energy needs.
While there is conservation and renewable energy in this paragraph, clearly subordinate to developing new power sources. Also, no mention of Global Warming (no environmental issue area). Okay, hesitant skepticism here driving the question: "Where do you see Energy in the campaign? Where do you see Global Warming in the list of Alaskans’ concerns?" The answer brought new light to the material on the issues page.
Energy issues are the #1 issue in Alaska … Costs that consumers that are facing … Realization that we can’t continue the same way we’ve been going.
Well, that might be the same points from the Energy Issues section. Concerns not abated.
[Global Warming] If you’d asked me four years ago, I would have said it wasn’t a big issue. … that the evidence isn’t conclusive …
Sounds like a potential skeptic or someone not really interested just a few years ago.
What happened? I went to Sundance with 40 Mayors with Al Gore and Robert Redford. This was before the film. Actually, it was sort of like the film live.
How many presentations has Gore said he’s given? Something like 3000.
I returned to Alaska after that one and one-half day trip.
I pulled out a photo of me as a kid by the Portage Glacier, with the ice no further than ten feet from me.I went out to the same location with my then three-year old son and took a photo. I literally couldn’t see the ice.
What happened to me in that moment, that was truly a life-changing moment for me.
Evidence, stark evidence, literally staring him in the face. And, it led him to sign up for Cool Mayors and to take action, including energy efficiency and renewable energy programs.
Within the next year, we got aggressive. And, I went back the next year to Sundance and presented what a city can do in just one year.
As to his electorate:
Alaskans are well aware of Global Warming, in rural Alaska, in the villages, it is really making them really nervous.
The "issues" page isn’t all there is Mark Begich. From it, I wouldn’t have picked up that he’s worked a target for 30 percent renewables within a decade with significant energy conservation also in the works to massively reduced southcentral Alaska’s reliance on fossil fuels. From his why I am running statement:
Alaska is ground zero for global warming. All you have to do is look at the shrinking polar ice cap and the devastating effects it’s having on our rural communities to know we have to do something.
According to Begich
Alaska is feeling the impacts of climate change more than any place else in the world. At ground zero, Alaskans have a responsibility to lead the way in developing solutions to global warming to protect the magnificent natural resources around us and to ensure that future generations do not inherit a drastically altered Alaska. The solutions will not only help protect our environment, but will save money and bolster our economy.
Now, I don’t know about you, but that certainly seems Energy Smart to me.
And, we can some use some more Energy Smarts in Washington, DC.

Yo.
That’s cool that he’s got the fucking balls to stand up to Schumer and the rest of the crony machine and demand what he needs to win.
Well, hopefully Mark will be able to let us know what happened with the conversation post Schumer.
But, Mark gave me real confidence that he’ll add some more Courage (rather than Fear) to the Democratic Party leadership in DC.
What seat is Diane Benson running for?
I spent a couple of months in Anchorage about in the summer of ‘97 on a project. A picture I took that summer of Portage Glacier is desktop wallpaper on my machine.
I don’t think I want to see the same area today.
Unfortunately.
Don Young’s At Large Congressional seat
Diane Benson is running for Congress. Her page.
With Benson & Begich, B&B won’t stand for Bed & Breakfast for Alaskans come next January …
I wonder what Schumer’s response will be?
. . .
Well, I can pretend to wonder, anyway. This is the guy who says Lieberman is with them on what counts.
It’ll be so sweet to see the old guard swept outta office…! I’ll be working hard to see that Inouye doesn’t get re-elected in 2010…! ;-0
Then apparently, all that counts to Schumer is re-electing incumbents. Lieberman sure as hell isn’t with us on any substantive issue.
Head…meet desk…
Hi A.
Thank you for the introduction to Mark Begich. It’ll be real shame to watch the door hit Ted Stevens on the way out -heh heh heh
Actually, the diary understates how impressed I was with Mark’s answer to my Inouye question.
I am pretty sure that the question (and answer) annoyed the DSCC (ah, I can sleep soundly at night). I should have given Mark even more cred along the (Glenn Horowitz) Fear & Courage lines. I really respected his response to the question, it played very well with me and likely would have with most here.
Begich
1. Recognized the issue
2. Recognized/acknowledge the Inouye/Stevens special relationship
3. Belittled both without being highly nasty
4. Showed ‘calm’ (waited 24 hours)
5. Showed determination
6. A very sensible demand in situation: not asking Schumer / DSCC to do anything re Inouye, not demanding that Inouye not do the fundraiser, but demanding that national party do something to counter it … and that counter has not just financial but publicity value
Probably missed some other reasons that I liked it but that is a pretty good list.
Thanks for posting on Begich A. – and for the good folks at FDL for tuning in.
Disclosure: I’m Mark Begich’s online communications director. Learn about Mark’s campaign to represent Alaska in the US Senate at Begich.com
Very glad that you could sign in as I can’t add much of substance about Mark and certainly am not in a position to answer any substantive questions.
Hopefully, you’ll be an online director for a Senator in the not too distant future. :-)
Cool! Tell him at least one New Yorker hopes he bends Schumer to his will!
I wonder if Lieberliar’s endorsement of a Republican candidate for President counts as with us on what counts. Schumer, the Bailey’s and Lieberman.
Hello, I would like to suggest a commercial, the US sent 363 tons of CASH to Iraq to pay Iraqi pensions because the Iraqi Finance Minister asked us to. There are pictures of pallets of cash being transported to Iraq, the largest shipment of cash in US history, that picture along with some local need, would be a great ad.
Instead of f*cking up ANWR, why can’t some of Alaska’s gas be diverted to itself? Have Alaskans considered seceding from the union?
We had a big week this week. On Monday Mark came out strong in support of Jim Webb’s 21st Century G.I. Bill. When Steven’s spokesman tried to push back, with the McCain defense (If we offer our troops good benefits, they won’t re-enlist), Mark pushed back harder:
This is going to be a real, meaningful issue-based fight for what Alaskans want the future to look like. As this exchange and the points A. make in this diary show, Begich is a fighter and I’m glad to be up in Alaska helping him.
Hi, MBH!
Hey Pach!
They must be waiting until after they spend $2 million for this study to be completed:
You have fine taste in candidates.
1,832 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen A Siegel and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
The Democratic leadership in BOTH houses of Congress needs to get pink slips in 2009. The problem in each house is different though…the Senate has always been ruled by majorities from the wealthiest class, as was the intention of the Founders, but the House of Representatives is ruled by a combination of seniority and corporate fundin’ which is gunna be easier ta break. In 2010, the netroots and a progressive DNC hafta find more middle class woman and rich entertainers (see Minnesota) ta run against the wealthy local families. Until there is at least a solid plurality of Senators who are NOT millionaires, the leadership of the Senate is always gunna be problematic.
It’s great that Mark Begich stood up ta Chuck the Bookkeeper Schumer but why is he still in charge of the DSCC when folks like Finegold, Dodd or the senior Senator from Illinois would be soooo much better? If I’m not mistaken, this is Schumer’s second go around, ain’t that a bit unusual?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THESE FOLKS WILL NEVER FEEL YER PAIN!!
When the permafrost is literally turning to mush under your house, that kind of focuses your attention on the problem. From the BBC, in 2004:
Imagine if the cement foundation of your house slowly began turning to pudding.
Another example: Last Friday – late April – Anchorage received over 18 inches of snow. Some parts to the north and east of Anchorage set records for most snow fallen in a single day. In April.
People up here see the effects of global warming and because Alaska really is an energy state, there’s also a great deal of solution-oriented policy being set. We’ll be rolling out our energy policy down the line, but as A.’s post notes, we’re also going to be updating our Issues page to better-reflect the forward-thinking attitude Mark Begich is taking on energy and global warming.
That would be funny except for the part where you weren’t kidding.
What was the fall out from the little email skirmish that just happened up there?
Aloha, Norske! A little editing is in order…
;-)
So far, nothing of note.
It’s interesting: internet politics are definitely entering a new generation in Alaska. Lots of things are now being done that haven’t been done yet, and in some regards the press and the political class are still catching up. From boundaries of emails, to attack websites, to domain grabbing – things are taking on a lot of the flavor that exists in other states, which is new for Alaska.
Is anybody out there?
It’s one thing to come here in the middle of the night and find no action, but on a Sunday afternoon?
Time was when headliners stuck around to talk to folks.
Just saying.
It’s Too Quiet.
Makes me nervous.
And, I’m like that anyway.
I presume that you know of EdwardTeller who comments from Alaska LateLate Nites at FDL. Also, CTuttle from HI, another LateLate Nite commenter. They’d be weighty allies in battling the Inouye/Stevens axis.
Been poking around on Mark’s website . . .
Top of the front page: getting behind Jim Webb’s new GI Bill, which is opposed by Ted Stevens.
Top of the “issues” page: ethics. Alaska’s GOP must be melting down faster than the permafrost, given the problems of Ted Stevens, Don Young, and folks further down the GOP food chain. (Can you say “Veco”? Sure you can . . )
Mark has a fine blogroll on his campaign website. Emptywheel, Greenwald, Digby, FDL, Down With Tyranny, . . .
CTuttle, what’s the deal with Inouye on this one? Is it simply “he’s an old friend, and there are fewer of us old guys around any more?”
Heh, you’re too kind, wigwam! ;-)
One thing of note with Stevens and the Webb bill. When we made our announcement, Mark and the vets he was joined by asked Ted Stevens to sign on as a co-sponsor to Webb’s bill. We thought there was a decent chance that Stevens would do this, as he’s a veteran who went to UCLA and Harvard Law on the GI Bill. Also, Alaska’s junior Republican Senator, Lisa Murkowski, is a co-sponsor.
Needless to say, we were wrong in terms of where he shook out on this – he’s since moved to support the McCain bill, which offers compromised benefits for today’s veterans.
In a further indication that the Democrats are well-positioned to expand their House majority this November, Democrat Don Cazayoux has won a special election tonight for a Louisiana seat that has been in Republican hands for over 30 years.
With 99% of precincts reporting, Cazayoux leads with 49,371 votes, or 49% of the vote, followed by Republican Woody Jenkins at 46,554 votes, or 46%. In a district that voted 59% for President Bush in 2004, that is simply a stunning result.
This is on top of another big Democratic pick-up two months ago, when Bill Foster (D-IL) won the suburban Illinois seat of former GOP Speaker Dennis Hastert.
In short, this year isn’t going very well so far for the NRCC.
(TPM)
Heya Matt! Glad to see you’re making waves up in AK! Keep up the good work.
He’s been drinking the Koolaid of late, he’s basically broken ranks with Akaka and the rest of the Hawaii delegation on way too many critical votes… Like FISA w/immunity, the Ledbetter Fair Pay, ANWR, etc… The party is taking note, but, he’s the patriarch here and few dare cross swords with him… He’s been in Congress since ‘62…!
Myself , I believe it is very likely we the people elected a veto proof majority in the senate and house in’06 but the damn electronic vote counters somehow spit out a vote count more favorable to the bush way. Just think how we lost the ability to predict the outcome of the vote ,through exit polls, since diebold was inserted in the election process. The question is why can’t we demand paper ballots along with these republican voting machines? At the end of the election night the votes should be equal or we should only accept the verifiable vote. If we each can be billed $9000. for the buffoons mistake in Iraq ,i for one would be willing to pay for hand counted ballots in order to avoid another 100 years in Iraq.
Hey Bob!
Doesn’t everyone think Bob should run for State Rep in CT to replace Jim Amann?
Howie mentioned GOP groups dropped four million bucks on that race!
ET’s website:
ProgressiveAlaska.blogspot.com
ET has been impressing me to no end and a nice new acquaintance from taking more dips in the lake. Don’t think that I realized that CTuttle was from HI.
Pretty friggin amazing. Gettin sixty seats seems nearly impossible- but there are some strange winds blowing.
YEAH!!!!!!!!
It takes 67 votes to override a veto- 60 to stop a filibuster—havin 60 dems in the senate doesn’t mean that they will have the votes on any given issue.
60 seats in ‘08 seems like less of a stretch that 50.5 (How do we count CFL Joe? By the way, that party gives Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs) a bad name.)
OK, now I’m taking back anything nice I’ve ever said about you!
Am I a “headliner”? If so, I’m around … but in and out, taking breaks from an ‘emergency’ household repair.
Are you new to the Lake?
I don’t think we’ve met.
I know Jane’s brought some new folks here lately….
CT is from the Big Island. Or, so I’ve heard.
I don’t know how to count Joe. Sometimes he votes like a dem- but if it’s about Porn or War- he’s a gooper through and through…
A ten seat pick up would be to run the table- take EVERYTHING out there that has a scent of weakness and hold the two weak seats the dems have…
Not impossible- but I wouldn’t put a lot of money on it.
CTBob for State Rep!
Ok we’re gonna need fundaising, volunteers, refreshments, and possibly a candidate. Let’s get started.
Demi … relatively new. Occasional lurker, very occasional commetator, with now about five posts over the past several weeks. Primarily an energy / environmental / global warming blogger. (My site: Energy Smart. Sort of the head of Energize America (if there is a ‘head’).)
I liked the fact that he won with the Repugs making a determined effort to wrap Wright/Obama around his neck like an albatross…! As Jane put it in an earlier post; “Back to the Atwater drawing board!”
Ah Bob, come on – you know I do it because I love you. Plus I think the CT legislature needs more reps who are passionate about sailing.
Are you?
I was referring to the one who posts…
Hope your household repairs are not habitable issues. Never fun, them.
Didn’t mean to make it personal.
Just, things are changing everywhere and it would be nice to have some sameness somewhere.
Yep, Madame Pele’s playground…! ;-)
I had been a little depressed about chances in La. with the Katrina carnage and population shift. Of course this is not related to that- but it’s pretty encouraging isn’t it? (I’m assuming that this district is not in NO).
CT Bob might fear YouTube karma. *g* Or we could commission a float with Bob sailing circles around Lieberman on a life raft.
Baton Rouge and it was a +7 Gooper stronghold…!
We have enough reps who take time off. We’re trying to find someone to take Amann’s place who actually WANTS to work!
Although, I am a little misty-eyed at seeing the “Crusher” ride off into the sunset.
Hey, ES! I’d read that there were seven deaths attributed to the twister carnage…! 8-(
KKKountry
Demi …
Since I’m the poster … Actually, I feel guilty that I’m running in and out from post to post / comment to comment ..
Not a critical ‘repair’. Replacing a broken exterior door. Pain in the b… but doable.
Wow—Hey- if dems can pick up in gooper plus seven districts- we could maybe send MY gooper congresscritter back to lobbying (Bilbray).
They’s a liddle a that mos everwhere in Lousianne.
ARG reports that President GW Clusterfuck is holdin steady with a 22% Job Approval Rating- funny as hell!
Gosh. Doable is better than not.
Exterior door? Gotta keep the bad things out.
But, not as bad as no water, or no hot water or…no electricity.
Still no fun.
Welcome to the Lake. Such as it is.
George W. Bush’s overall job approval rating is holding steady at 22% while 68% of Americans say the national economy is in a recession and 54% say their personal financial situations are getting worse. Details from the nationwide survey conducted April 16-19 are available at The National Economy.
Why am I thinking How low can you go?
Has any one man made so many people this sad?
For some reason, ARG pulls lower JAR numbers than anyone else- but I have to laugh at the “holding steady” description–what a dick!
Can anyone tell me why TRex left the Lake?
And, can you tell me why Texasbetsy is being the landlord in absentia there now?
Just trying to follow the liberal blogosphere here.
Tell me what ARG and what JAR means.
Pretend I’m Blond.
Well, TexBetsy is helping out while TRex tries to find and/or mourn his missing feline companion that may have wandered off for his end days.
ARG= American Research Group (pollsters)
JAR= Job Approval Rating
ARG = American Research Group, aka Polling firm
JAR = Job Approval Rating
Oh, it’s about Gus? :(
Really? That’s what it’s about?
Thanks, tho.
I think the district is near Baton Rouge. New Orleans is still dem but only just.
So, where is everyone else?
You seem to be here, always….lurking if nothing else.
You’re always so kind to give an explanation or a link.
You!
I appreciate you Dakine.
Read Max Boot in the WSJ the other day. Where did he get his fascist walking around papers.
He claims that it’s good news that casualties were up last month in Iraq cause it means we’re out killing bad (and good) guys.
Eight more casualties already this month so–it’s good news if yer Max.
Kinda hard to understand.
Yeah. Them and us. Meaning the good old U.S. of A.
How are ya this afternoon, Mare?
The effect will be felt most in the statewide races – and of course in the presidential race…Landrieu is ahead though- so it’s not like Mississippi or somethin.
I am good. Yourself?
Just found a picture of Max Boot at WIKI
Strange lookin man
Looks like he writes..
What kinda name is “Boot”?
Is that the same school of thought that says added 20,000 unemployed for the month is a good thing? No wonder the JAR is 22 and dropping….
It’s very odd thinking—-maybe ya have to be home schooled or somethin to follow it.
I am really surprised that Landrieu is ahead. And happy about it. But she has voted with Lieberman flair lately.
I like her brother, Mitch. He ran against Nagin. But Nagin was the repug choice. Nagin was a registered repug before running for mayor the first time.
Just hanging.
Pretty slow here, huh?
Maybe I’ll go grab a book or something.
Or, we could put some music on and dance?
Max sits at home in his boots- waitin for more good news from EYE-RACK
“OH GOOD” says Max “CASUALTIES ARE UP”.
Oh, now I am blushing.
Great way for Mark Begich to handle the Incumbency Protection Racket. Schumer better come through. Did you tell Mark we know a guy named Howie Klein who’s tight with Schumer in case he needs help? *g*
Thanks, A !
Das Boot?
Yeah me too.
I guess she votes the way she has to to keep the seat- not as bad as Breux though.
Heh, many of the financial newspapers and TH’s touted that as good news, they had anticipated higher #’s and considered it a boon… F*ckers…!
I was thinking of that too- Max Das Boot
das boot!
I’m not sure what you mean by home-schooled. I understand the concept, just not how you used it.
I don’t do it, but what with how messed up the government-funded schools are, it’s not always a bad thing.
How come everything said here is a term one has to be on the inside to get? Or has the balls to ask?
Don’t tase me Breux!
I’d dance with you any day.
Blushing is better than rouge.
Brings out the pinks in your cheeks.
I was just jokin around- talkin about goopers sayin strange things and since home schoolers tend to be goopers- I blamed the strange things on them.
BTW, they’re hiring… In Iraq…
Just what we need… more armed Private Contractors! 8-(
You can ask all the testicular questions you want.
Tested the limit of the concept of demness.
Punaise would be proud…! ;-)
Ya gotta link for that, or yur just talking out yer you know what?
Do you have school aged children?
I do.
It’s a pain, let me tell you.
Strange things start to happen to me when Louisiana comes up. I feel at once home sick and happy as hell to be living in Cali.
Don’t say that word!!!
(I’m in a mood.)
Link for what? I lost ya.
Nope- no school aged children.
The school thing or the children?
(I can say this cause I have adult children)
you know these elections where democrats are making inroads in republican districts have to be incredibly distressing to the republicans
I am gonna bet that if mccain loses, (and he can’t possibly win any legitimate election) then the republican politician are gonna call bush the worst president of all time just as the democtrats do
right now everone I know that voted for this man are discusted
I’ve got children all right- but the oldest one TEACHES school
Thought you might be.
I bet my kids are older than your kids. :)
Mine are on social security.
Mine are so old they don’t qualify for Social Security.
Dood. The praise is well warranted.
