Surprise, surprise. Yet another Minuteman spinoff group has been linking up with local neo-Nazis, this time in Arizona:
Take 74-year-old Elton Hall. (Please, take him.) An Arizona organizer for the American Nazi Party back in the day, he’s now so radioactive that even Rusty Childress’ hate-group United for a Sovereign America pretends the geriatric goosestepper no longer exists. Nevertheless, the neurosurgeons at Patriots Border Alliance, a group of minutemen who broke free from the leadership of Minuteman Civil Defense Corps honcho Chris Simcox last year, have a pic on their Web site showing the crackpot Hitler-lover in a wheelchair, surrounded by fawning fans.
The header and caption for the image read, "PATRIOTS’ BORDER ALLIANCE HONORING ELTON HALL: In appreciation for your deactivated service, devotion, commitment to securing American borders and promoting THE RULE OF LAW." Sniff. Gets you all teary-eyed, don’t it? All this affection for a dood who once bowed to ANP founder George Lincoln Rockwell, and who has no remorse for it, nor for his current icon-like status with kid skinheads.
The photo features an obviously injured Hall, presumably recovering from his hospital stay after being hit during a two-car collision at Bell Road and 25th Street, where he was protesting, along with other U.S.A. types, the nearby Macehualli Work Center. Encircling the old kook are all the usual suspects, folks you regularly see at nearly every anti-immigrant meet-up in the Valley. Among them, natch, is alleged public urinator Buffalo Rick Galeener, who commonly refers to nonwhites as "monkeys."
Of course, this is hardly the first time neo-Nazis and various white supremacists have been associated with the Minutemen. Who can forget the very colorful Nazi and Dixie flags that sprouted at that rally featuring Minuteman honcho Jim Gilchrist at Laguna Beach, Calif.? Or the time Laine Lawless, the leader of another Minuteman spinoff, e-mailed an Ohio neo-Nazi leader with suggestions for how to stir up the immigrant shit (among the choice ideas: "Discourage Spanish-speaking children from going to school. Be creative."). And there have been many, many other instances.
But the columnist reporting this, Stephen Lemons, asks: "What is it with nativist nutbars and neo-Nazis?"
Well, we’re glad you asked, Stephen.
I’ve discussed previously what it is:
There’s a perfectly simple reason that white supremacists and far-right extremists keep popping up in the immigration debate: the anti-immigrant right is just talking their game. They’re naturally drawn to the cause because it is their cause.
… The Minutemen, of course, make much ado about their efforts to "weed out the racists," though of course the reality is that their success is mixed at best.
What nobody seems to ask, though, is why they have to "weed out the racists" in the first place. If the core of their appeal isn’t racial in nature, then why do they draw so many people for whom it is?
Of course, you will never hear this on Lou Dobbs.

Yep….. why don’t we ask McBush how he feels about this going on in his home state…. welcome to my world …
Does the name George Lincoln Rockwell ring a bell with anybody?
neo-nazi = neo-con
same thing
Yes. Wiki has information on him, and he also wrote books. Ick.
he is going to be fine with it, he has thrown in with the neo-cons, the neo-cons are ne0-nazi
My father was one of the eyewitnesses to the assassination. He was on his way into the laundromat to pick up dry cleaning when the shots were fired. Scared the hell out of him. Rockwell was a common sight in Alexandria, swatika armband and all. Creepy dude.
100% true.
We had these big memorial day campouts for Nam Vets a few years back. We had bands and at midnight, when they stopped, the biker dudes would burn VC, NVA and Rising Sun flags. Never a Nazi flag was torched. Looks like some of those cats in the picture.
We have former congresscritter JD Hayworth as the drive time 4-7 talk show host on a 50,000 watt radio station spewing his brown hate….
Then… Radio host’s call to kill border crossers dangerous
Then there is Sheriff Joe…… OMG…
Hispanics in Chandler fear another ‘Roundup’
Phoenix mayor: Arpaio raids are ‘made-for-TV stunts’
Dum dums one can hope.
I’m re-reading Shirer’s “Rise and Fall….” How the Republicans copied Hitler’s methods in his rise to power is astounding.
He once held a rally in Yorkville, the predominantly German neighborhood in NYC about 5 blocks from where I lived. Even as a child I was horrified, having heard about the war from my mother and uncle. Exceptionally creepy dude.
He was breathing his last by the time my dad got to the car. He’d never seen anything like that. Didn’t like guns. It was only after I got back to the world for good that I realized what I had put him through.
I see you mentioned Michael Parenti. I go way back with him. My buddy took this picture at the U of I, we were about 50 yards away when the Illinois State Police waylaid him.
We wore our folks out didn’t we?
That’s the thing that always amazed me about the American Nazi Party. WWII hadn’t been over 20 years and this guy had quite a following. His little headquarters in Alexandria always had people coming and going.
Illinois State police and Illini cops welcome visiting professor Michael Parenti to campus during the May anti war demonstrations that shut down campuses across the nation. Kent State ” 4 dead in Ohio” came from those demonstrations.
My dad’s hair turned almost white during those 4 years.
A little OT relating to the post the other day discussing the election of Judges. Here’s the type of jurisprudence you end with:
Of course this isn’t just any campaign contributor we’re talking about, either!
You gets all the justice you can pay for…
Ain’t nothin’ changed. Even with vid capable cell phones the cops still beat and shoot people who think differently from them.
My old man was pretty happy I got sent to Korea instead of the Nam. . .until Pueblo. When i weasled my way into a until shipping to Nam he was not a happy camper, remf or not.
In the building I grew up in we had a German-born officer in the US Army who helped liberate Dachau (he finally showed us kids the photographs he took when we were in our mid 30s, horrifying doesn’t BEGIN to describe them), as well as a camp survivor who had been tortured. The contrast of living with those two men and then that rally down the street was stark.
Dear mods. I would greatly appreciate your totally removing my comment previous thread #176 ASAP. I didn’t know…
Seems to have been done.
Thank you ((((mods))))
Forgive the edit please, but wanted to add a little more clarity to the statement.
OMG. I’d had an awful premonition just before we left the house yesterday. I was afraid to look at the news today. DAMMIT!
I still haven’t gotten over Ruffian… I wish they’d just stick to dice and the slot machines…
Thanks guys. You’re the best.
Arizona Nazis? I hate the f*cking Arizona Nazis.

No forgiving necessary. With my long hair I tend to forget about it. It’s usually my mouth that gets me in trouble with the heat.
George W Bush is not the worst president in history. Dick(head) Cheney is the worst president in history.
The combo is the worst dictator in our history.

Hi, Dave! Hi, y’all!
No book salon today?
I have often wondered where those people who shot them are today and what they are like. Don’t know how I could live with myself if I had done that.
Kent State turned this river rat’s thinking 180 degrees.
Nor should we forget Phillip Gibbs, James Earl Green and Jackson State.
Arizona as it wackos in the state legislature too. One who wants to ban university clubs based on race – MEChA is his target. Brown people scare him.
Digging it for your post David!
They were never charged with anything. Only one, according to Tom Grace’s account, was remorseful for what happened. (From the book From Camelot to Kent State
Please enlighten me on this. I was too young at the time that it happened…
Jackson State
OK, this pisses me off. The New York Times has a series of 9 short op-eds from “experts on military affairs” about the next step in Iraq
Right the Wrong
By Nathaniel Fick Fick wrote “One Bullet Away: The making of a Marine officer” detailing his experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan. He thinks we should do more with the Sons of Iraq movement.
Make an Orderly Exit
By Anthony H. Cordesman. Cordesman is a long time conservative hawk who thinks “exit” means leaving 5 brigades in Iraq.
Don’t Drain Iraq’s Cash
By Frederick Kagan. Kagan, a neocon’s neocon, is, of course, the architect of the “surge” and an American Enterprise Institute whore. He would consider McCain’s statement about staying in Iraq for 100 years a precipitate withdrawal and tantamount to cutting and running.
Neighbors at the Table
By Paul D. Eaton. Eaton is one of the generals who criticized the way the Iraq war was carried out. He helped train Iraq’s largely non-existent army. He is also an advisor to the Clinton campaign.
Baghdad Must Pay Its Way
By L. Paul Bremer III Yes. Bremer whose complete lack of understanding of Iraq and all things military perfectly qualifies him for this list.
Know Thy Friends
By Danielle Pletka Yet another AEI idiot neocon because a list like this can never have too many.
Time to Cut the Cord
By Richard Perle Déjà vu all over again. Yet another AEI idiot neocon because a list like this can never have too many.
Remember the Refugees
By Anne-Marie Slaughter Slaughter is Dean of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and one of those “liberal” neocon hawks in the mold of Michael O’Hanlon.
Can the South Stand Strong?
By Kenneth M. Pollack Pollack is O’Hanlon’s spiritual neocon twin at Brookings.
Do you notice anyone missing from this ghoul’s gallery of neoconery? That’s right. There is no one who hasn’t been a big supporter of the Iraq war, no one who got it right, no one who represents the 2/3 of Americans who think that this has all been a disaster and we should just leave. These are the “experts” the New York Times trots out to wax wise and philosophic about the Iraq war for us. Can anything be more stupid and obscene? So if the Times puts together a panel on bioethics, who will they put in charge of it? Josef Mengele?
My FIL was there too. He was a combat photographer with that group.
Says it all right there.
Wow. A repeat after the Kent State tragedy only ten days earlier…
Did you note that they had picked up their casings *before* the ambulance was called?
odd that there really are nazis out there
wonder what they think a nazi is? anyone who wnats to deport anyone who isn”t white?
too weird
I actually went to the PNT link because I couldn’t believe I saw the following:
I think they meant “dedicated”. But one never can be sure.
The new fair and balanced right wing and far rightwing.

Thanks for this, Dakine. I had no idea that this happened. Yet if any of those cops’ bullets had hit a white kid, it would have been just as big news as Kent State.
As Dick Gregory pointed out in a speech at my university a few months later, we were the “new [targets]”
Like I said earlier,
“Ain’t nothing changed.”
Hey, don’t mock them! They’ve spent several decades and billions getting the press to be this messed up, what with Moon, Murdoch, Welch et al. If the press wasn’t this messed up, there wouldn’t be a demand for blogs like this one. (/snark)
That’s why I raised it as it kinda gets lost in the noise sometimes. Whenever Kent is mentioned, I try to mention Jackson.
We did feel like it was open season on us at the time.
Who can forget the very colorful Nazi and Dixie flags that sprouted at that rally featuring Minuteman honcho Jim Gilchrist at Laguna Beach,
We need TV commericals showing John Confederate Flag McCain with a picture of Minutemen, Nazi, etc to be shown in African American, Hispanic and Jewish areas.
We need a clip of the Blues Brothers saying they hate Illinois Nazi’s before they hit the gas and drive through a crowd of them. I’m sure Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi would be proud to release the footage if asked.
“Cohen pointed only to McCain’s reversing his position on “the acceptability of the Confederate flag” as evidence that McCain had “fudged and ducked and swallowed the truth on occasion.”

Great post David.
Well, George Armstrong Custer wasn’t available.
Yeah and no Judy Miller the Time’s hands are not exactly clean on this! The Times itself should call for Judy to give back her Prize.
It’s open season on our kids now in some far off shitholes called Iraq and Afghanistan.
Of course this isn’t just any campaign contributor we’re talking about, either!
Perry, one of the nation’s largest individual donors to Republican candidates, is known nationally for helping pay for the so-called swift boat commercials that attacked Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004.
You gets all the justice you can pay for…
Sounds like another TV commerical only this time we attack the Swift boaters first!
Bravo Zulu, Crazy Horse!
Hello? MoveOn? We’ve got an idea…
But the NY Times is a totally liberal propaganda outlet!

Alison Krauss was born in Decatur, Illinois, but was raised in Champaign, Illinois.[3] She began studying classical violin at five years old but soon switched to bluegrass. Krauss said she first became involved with music because her “mother tried to find interesting things for [me] to do” and “wanted to get [me] involved in music, in addition to art and sports.”[4] At age eight she started entering local talent contests, and at ten she had her own band. At twelve she won the Illinois State Fiddle Championship;[citation needed] at thirteen she won the Walnut Valley Festival Fiddle Championship,[5] and the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass in America named her the Most Promising Fiddler in the Midwest. Krauss first met Dan Tyminski around 1984 at a festival held by the Society. Every current member of her band, Union Station, first met her at these festivals.[6]

Both are from Illinois I wonder if they are related?
Nope
True. But in those days it was Open season on teens and twenty somethings in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, AND the US.
Different spelling of the last name?
Lots of immigrants spell their name slightly different I’ve seen my name with an S or a Z you have to remember that alot of people couldn’t write and Immigration can’t spell.
If our current crop of neo-nazi leaders start more shit with Iran before the election, or after, the same may be true here again. We’ve seen what the LAPD is capable of.

ThingzComeUndone?
OK I’m From Crystal Lake nice to meetcha ya!
i have pictures of young people (college age maybe?) beaten bloody by a paramilitary gang of cops from just a few years ago. that a bunch of volunteers with the national lawyers guild was there taking pics didn’t stop or even phase the cops at all.
but at least no one was using live rounds – that’s one good thing.
Yep. The students were having a peaceful demonstration when the National Guard ordered them to disperse. They refused, and then they came at them with bayonets because someone threw a bottle. A bottle, mind you…while they had guns.
Yep my brother Thingz 2 if I ever get him here at the Lake might spell it that way…just to piss me off. Just Kidding
I can haz veggie zub?
We’ve got Frank Sharry coming by for a chat instead.
In Los Angeles we had peaceful protests on May Day this year, as opposed to all the craziness that happened last year.
The people revolted. The press revolted and the police department took a long hard look at their strategies and the way they treat crowd control.
It’s good to see progress.
I think it would be safe to say that all metropolitan police could now be termed paramilitary. There’s something about an amateur with an automatic weapon that makes me a little nervous.
OK, this is only partly snark. I glanced quickly at that photo and noted the chubby dude in the black shirt, far left. Thought, “It couldn’t be. Could it?”
Maybe I need new glasses, but he seemed to bear a striking resemblance to one Karl Rove.
And Hugh @ 45: time to write more letters to the editors. Not that they’ll print them, but the sheer volume will tell them something.
Cool. I found very little information on him via Google. What are we going to talk about?
So, the subject will be immigration?
Thank you David for bringing these Arizona wackos to light….. many may not know that the farthest west battle during the civil war was fought here in AZ at Picacho Peak which they reenact every year
Civil War in the Southwest
I lived in Villa Park when the tornado hit there in, what, 65? We went up to help lout,
I did hear a piece that described the different tactics the heat were going to use this year. Multi-language announcements over megaphones, that sort of thing. I remember Chief Parker and his nonsense.
On April 11, 1965, during the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, a large and devastating tornado damaged or destroyed large portions of the city. Six people were killed by the tornado, and a further 75 wounded. Damages in the city totaled over $1.5 million, as 80 homes and a shopping center were completely destroyed. Disaster shelters were set up to house the homeless, and then-governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, Jr., personally visited the city to view the damage.
i guess the topic (see my bold) sorta precludes anyone who thinks our next step out to be OUT of iraq.
well, damn them too.
maybe i just woke up angry today – but the outrages are piling up faster than i can let them go.
Yeah. Thanks to LA, Daryl Gates, and Hollywood, every cop shop decided they needed their own private army/SWAT team.
That chicken-shit punk would never get that close to the action.
Some of the officers from last years mellee are still in trouble.
And, yeah, now they can say up against the wall, MFs in lotsa languages.
I may be being a little cynical, but I think it’s more to save the city a lot of money in lawsuits rather than really wanting to treat people more humanely.
I imagine we can talk money vs. humanity during the talk with Sharry.
My homeboy from San Fran used to talk about the Tac Squad long before SWAT.
Water pistol prolly make him piss his pants.
Yep….. AZ Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio just received his SECOND tank… yep… his second tank
Sheriff Joe’s stupid tank
What Arpaio uses the first tank…. destroying homes…. hitting cars…. killing family dogs…
And since MECHA is multi-racial it wouldn’t have any effect. The bill just shows how ignorant people are about a) Mexico, and b) Mexican Americans.
Yeah, but Gates was a better marketer, with Hollywood and TV’s help. Notice we don’t talk about Tac Squads but do talk about SWAT Teams.
No sheriff needs a tank. That’s absurd. But I think Joe is nuts, anyway.
These groups lack credibility. They’re all white rednecks. They need poseurs for hire – guys like Juan Williams. Juan, won’t you stand with these patriotic ‘merkuns?
That’s the bottom line. The people can sue the shit out of the city but the city always wins but it costs them a ton of money and that’s what they don’t like. They don’t care if the heat kills 100 women and kids, they don’t want to have to fork over any dough for it. I’d use my preferred term for heat but I figure the mods would burn me for it.
SD – all guns scare me. and i don’t care how good the training is when they are fired in anger.
Thanks I was not born yet but I did hear about it. My Dad was still living in Chicago my Mom in Mexico then.
The place has rebuilt though. The old Gravel Quarries are a great place to ride.
Any chance of this passing?
A tank talk about a waste of TAXPAYERS money. How often does he use his tank? Could the money have been better spent? Has crime gone down since he got the tank? Has he ever arrested a single al Quieda?
It’s easy when the other angry side is, for all intents and purposes, unarmed. A plastic riot shield will deflect a beer bottle, rock or other thrown object. It’s like the IDF shooting kids for throwing rocks at tanks.
Maybe he and his significant other do kinky things in the tank.
Read the last link about how they use the tank….. will make everyone pissed….
AZ Matt is taking about Russel Pierce….. state rep who puts really putative and radical ballot measures and they pass…
- how about not being to receive an award in state court from an injury from employment because they are an undocumented person. So you loose your arm in the defective chicken plucking plant and they cannot sue
- kids cannot receive a state scholarship if they cannot prove if their parents immigration status EVEN if the student are documented American citizens
- babies born from undocumented parents will not receive a birth certificate …. and if the mother is undocumented, the father is, he needs to declare they will support the baby
Gates, ha, remember when Mad Dog Ed Davis wanted portable gallows at LAX to hang hijackers on the spot?
i don’t think i understand what you mean by “easy”
I think people should simply stop reading the NY Times. They have become a propaganda organ for the Neo-Cons. To rub this is the faces of 80% of the country (and probably 90% of New Yorkers) is simply obscene.
Does the publisher have a death wish for the paper? Why not just buy the NT Post? At least it doesn’t pretend to represent “Truth”. The NY Times tries to disguise the turd by covering it with lipstick.
the stuff on Sheriff Joe would take a whole series of posts….. the 41,000 unserved felony warrants while he does rounding up the brown people or the use of RICO funds for trips to Honduras or why is the Sheriff buying multi-million dollar real estate on a $76,000 salary?
cuz they don’t sell it in Georgia?
New York Times Deathwatch
When they hired that sick-fuck Kristol, I decided to boycott the NY Times. Not that they give a flying fuck.
I think the LAPD has always had a little better PR than the actual conditions warranted. And their chiefs, by virtue of location, get way more pub thatn they should.
“Jes the facts, Ma’am, jes the facts”
Well, we’re interested, start writing!
The heat don’t seem to have an aversion to firing on unarmed groups of people.
i cheat. i’ve signed up for google news alerts for my favorite journalists – i get a nice little email telling me when an article has been posted and i don’t have to go searching for them.
me and my big mouth…. ;)
Isn’t the Sherriff from McCain’s state? Well then that makes the exposure of the goings on in McCain’s state totally relevant to the election. Maybe you could spread the news on Late Nite threads.
not just the cops.
Yeah, that little piece I wrote about the other day~ with Penn State developing a “puke ray” for Homeland Security ~
they said they wanted one in the hands of every cop in the country.
When you have an obsolete, inconvenient physical product that nobody wants in an era of universal online access, the appropriate strategy is clearly to raise the price.
This sounds like a business strategy GW learned at Harvard.
David, if you are still here, this is from my local paper:
Immigration enforcement ties up jail
As federal presence at county jail grows, so do numbers of immigrant detainees But some clash over public safety merits, exposing another layer of the illegal immigration debate and how best to deal with it
Sheriff Joe and McBush are BFF…..
I love comparing the NY Times stock price performance to claims by Times columnists that they are relevant and in touch with the people not like the Lefty blogs.
By the way just how much did FDL or Koz grow last year?
Perfect just get some news articles post them and provide background information, your own take and some Snark and you got a comment for late nite!
The fascists are feeding the Private Prison Industry, by clogging the system with innocents. This endangers the citizenry because real criminals benefit from a clogged system. Immigration issues and marijuana offenses are filling our jails. Who benefits? – more friends of Bushco.
Don’t know enough about Arizona politics. But it seems to me that if it applies to Mecha, it would also ban all sorts of clubs based on interest in or affiliation with, ethnicity. Thus you’s also ban Greek, German and French, Asian-American and Philipino clubs, as well as groups like Black-Engineers, NAACP, Cultural dance troupes (Black Rep), and bringing in groups like the Harlem Boys Choir, Ladysmith Black Mambazo (no whites within the Zulu tribe), Chinese acrobatic groups, etc.
It might alwso shut down whole Departments that offer classes involved in examining and understanding issues of ethnicity (just as Mecha doesn’t deny membership to whites, blacks, Native Americans…these courses do not deny admission to peoples of other ethnicities…in fact, they encourage that). One could see that Asian Studies, or Ethnic Studies, or Anthropology Departments being shuttered.
I don’t know how they would shut down MECHA UNLESS they expanded the definition of race to ethnicity, and then started “head counting” and defining those who were in the membership*. They’d have to say that there was a certain integration thresh-hold and if you didn’t meet that (say 20% Euro-American) then you would be banned. But that would likely mean that UNLV’s basketball team would have to shut down, and many other sports. And if swimming and golf was mainly white, well that would be “ethnically biased” too.
This could actually turn around and bite the racist formulators of the bill…reintroducing hard quotas into Medical schools, Graduate Programs, and student and faculty composition.
*Such bean-counting has already occurred with the No Child Left Behind criteria…where children of mixed-race or black ancestry are sometimes asked to “challenge” their ethnicity described on their forms in order to get the schools exempted from having to count passage of Black students in the mandatory testing requirements (schools that have fewer than 10% AA students can opt not to submit their scores separately). So schools are now redefining the ostensible race of individuals…trying to get smart mixed kids INTO the AA group while excluding those not succeeding, etc.
Time for the Rays and Red Sox on da radio. Plus hang out da laundry. Later.
Peace Love Light
Isn’t the Sherriff from McCain’s state? Well then that makes the exposure of the goings on in McCain’s state totally relevant to the election. Maybe you could spread the news on Late Nite threads.
One of the reasons people think that neither Mayor Daley Father or Son has ever run for state or nationwide office is because the goings on in Chicago would become news.
Its time for McCain to see what comes of not getting his own house in order first.
fdl was down some (coming off the libby trial, that is understandable), and kos was steady.
i don’t think the liberal blogs are continuing to grow readership. but would be happy to be corrected if someone has data.
Its an election year I’m sure it will go up.
Watchin the Hawks up in here.
A lot fewer people this year, though. There were a lot of official vehicles following the one march I saw (mostly street/sanitation dept (yellow), but there was a police bus and a fair number of black-and-whites, also lots of K9s).
The dancers (feathered folklorico type headdresses) at the end of that one were interesting. There was also a group in it with a ‘Taxi Workers’ sign and a contingent of Korean immigrants.
Lots of US flags and red-white-and-blue shirts.
This gives the game away right here. They’re not going after the employers. They’re ENABLING the employers to hire more cheap undocumented labor, knowing that they can do whatever they want to the laborers and the laborers can’t fight back.
Does it never occur to the people backing these measures as “protecting American jobs” (not the ones writing them who are obviously in on the con) that these measures COST Americans their jobs, as they remove any sort of downside for hiring undocumented workers at slave wages over a documented worker at a living wage?
Unless there is a Ridgecrest, AZ, that picture was taken in Ridgecrest, CA, a little town in the Mojave Desert next to China Lake Naval Weapons Testing installation.
