North Carolina absentee senator Liddy Dole was predictably not in the office when Pam Spaulding and the folks from BlueNC came calling with 1200 signatures we all collected asking Liddy to take a stand and make the racist Republican ads against Barack Obama stop — something that John McCain is too politically feeble to do.
I entered the office, and signed in the senator’s guest book, Mr. Holley came out to greet me and we went to an office adjacent to where Elizabeth Dole "works" when she is in town. I sat down with Mr. Holley and asked where the senator was. He said "she’s traveling." I didn’t get a response as to whether that was to or from NC or DC. A basic question about where my senator is while working on my dime shouldn’t be a state secret, but alas, no success on that front. I also inquired as to when Senator Dole had last been in the state. Mr. Holley said that she rode in float for a "Support Our Troops" rally of some kind last Saturday. Of course this is a rarity; Liddy Dole isn’t seen around here unless she’s campaigning.
Before departing, I requested that we receive an official response from the senator to the petition so that I could share it with readers of Firedoglake, Pam’s House Blend and BlueNC. He said he would pass that on as he took notes, also recording the number of petition signers. I asked Mr. Holley if he would like to be photographed receiving the package outside, where we could film it. He declined. I was politely escorted out of the high-security zone.
As Jane said, ¡Muy Macho! John McCain or Liddy Dole?. We’ll see. Does the NC GOP’s race-baiting dog whistle ad reflect the party of the past and the future? Senator Dole’s response will make it clear whether the GOP elders and influentials don’t care what kind of garbage is tossed out there in the name of the Republican party.
My favorite part comes from Pam’s commenter Louise:
Liddy’s schedule of "upcoming events", per her own site, has not been updated in over 3 years.
Kinda says it all, don’t it?

I doubt it.
Hi Jane.
She was probably hiding in the closet…no, I change my mind…she probably doesn’t really go to work at all….but I’ll bet she can be found at a lot cocktail parties…and at the plastic surgeon’s office…
Quien es mas macho? Pam Spaulding or Liddy Dole? Pam has more cajones than anyone in NC. I am not surprised that Mrs. Dole did the ol’ Cut and Run thing.
Will Elizabeth Dole make the racist attacks stop? NO! It’s the Republicans ace in the hole. Play to the yahoo’s ignorance on race and class. As long as they be white they are part of the club. What chumps.
Digg it
You know Elizabeth won’t do any thing! She is just like all rethuglians just to stoop into the gutter for adds against the Democrats!
How are the ads racist?
¡Muy Macho! John McCain or Liddy Dole?
which one’s got the co-ho-ness?
I seriously doubt it. Why is she even a senator? She is the poster child for absentee congressional representation.
She reminds me of my childhood paino teacher, who always smelled like Jean Nate and had candy so old in her candy dish that it had solidifed into one mass. (ahhh, good times)
People always expect the Republican Party to have an epiphany on how they run their campaigns. A moment of conscious(sic). Does anyone actually think that the Republican establishment has a conscious? That epiphany could only come if they were strapped down on a wooden plank with a funnel stuck in their mouths to direct a stream of tepid water. Then and only then might a Republican come to the realization that they have been in the service of evil.
“¡Muy Macho! John McCain or Liddy Dole?” crosses in my mind with Laurie Anderson’s ‘Que es mas macho?”
Liddy Dole = one woman, one dependable vote against womankind every time.
OT, but the muck has been so thick, I’m thinking people might like a lift. I know I do. A man named Lawrence Lessig made a video comparing and contrasting Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on matters of character, integrity, and what they will do as president. I found it brilliant and inspiring. (Clinton supporters probably won’t.)

neither of them is an Excellent Bird.
Hi, my name is Bob Dole, and I say, stop! This message.
Bob Dole…Liddy Dole…Viagra…shudder.
well, don’t think much of either candidate’s character, but i’ve never seen anyone make a power point (or keynote?) presentation like lessig… so, i’ll give it a watch.
p.s. lessig was great testifying before the senate commerce committee last week (on net neutrality).
Thank you. Now where’s the brain bleach?
damn you , punaise… i wuz goin’ there
;(
well I think my girls have now gone concave at the thought
Elizabeth Dole is simply a good ole boy Rethuglican in bad drag and starched hair without any perceptible courage.
Am off to digg Jane’s post and also marvel at how successful nanant’s reminders resonate. ;~)
rub gently and think happy thoughts… that should “perk” ‘em up
;~P
Well at least it made me laugh but I’m still nauseous
I think all politicians fear being filmed now for any reason because of George Allen’s Macaca moment. We hasve made our public officials YouTube phobic.
Good!

did I beak you to the punch?
time for a short nap. back later
lessig for president.
:D classic
:o
you don’t like lessig?
selise, hi, given that you’re not for either Clinton or Obama, I’d be interested in what you think of Lessig’s views. I haven’t heard anyone elaborate on what “Change We Can Believe In” means until Lessig and he does a brilliant job I think.
he seems resonable to me :)
could’ave swore i ad youT00B of lessig but looking again it seems i’ve must not ave bookmarked it after all.
hey jane, you’re gonna love this, mccain shows he is nothing but another puppet, you gotta check this out from think progress;
Brought a tear to my eye. Thanks. Who is this Lessig guy? He’s good.
disagree with all of lessig’s points, except the last one on how we tell the world we’ve changed and try to make peace. don’t know that obama will actually do that- but i do think that people, especially in the ME (but also in central and south america) will see our choice of obama as a choice for a change – in a good way. it’s not entirely clinton’s fault, but i don’t think choosing her would be seen in the same way as choosing obama.
but i could be entirely wrong – it’s intuition based on what people thought of president bill clinton’s policies (on iraq and on the economic strangulation of central and south america). would love to have some reliable polling data on which candidate the world’s non-elite would prefer we vote for.
President Carter said it very well on Charlie Rose this week.
Phoenix Woman’s upstairs with the latest on McCain and Minnesota bridges…
This is of course the fine leadership Liddy exhibited when she was with the Red Cross. Not.
Just stopped by to do a Fresh Post shout-out!
Not Doris Lessig, I’m guessing. ;)
ever heard of creative commons?
free culture?
oh, and he blogs.
and youtubes.
and is a member of the american academy of arts and sciences.
rofl
missed that.
glad to see none of the tornadoes carried you away!
oh, and how could i forget?
lessig is probably the most persuasive voice for net neutrality. something, i suspect we can all agree on.
powerpoint presentations – the “lessig method’
I’ve seen it several times. It has the same effect on me. I haven’t heard of Lessig, but it looks like selise and tw3k are well aware of him.
big fan – can you tell? *g*
No, really? Well, at least there’s something we can agree on, besides net neutrality, of course. *g* Will take a look at your links. Thanks.
Miss Liddy sure takes that “representative of the people” stuff seriously. Next time anyone sees her, please ask her which people? Next time she asks y’all to renew her public service contract, I’d say no.
Yes, O/T but I will bite anyway.
Obama was for gas tax relief before he was against it.
Not that I am against substantial debate. I don’t like bumper sticker politics at all. Most issues are too complex deal with in 5 words or less (at 65 mph). That is why I like Senator Clinton. She has policy down cold. She also has politics down cold. I know that gas tax relief won’t really make a big difference. I think most Americans do as well. But I like to know that my pain is being felt at the higher levels.
Did any one read Senator Obama’s plans for Oregon? ROTFLMAO. His staff is just phoning it in. My concern is that it is indicative of what a President Obama would be like. America and the Democratic party can not afford that. We need an engaged and knowledgable President. Senator Obama does not fit that description.
I agree with Mark Udall. I laughed my a$$ off at his father’s book, Too Funny to be President. I wish his father had run for that office. That is why I think that Senator Clinton is the best of the current crop of candidates.
If it the tax holiday neutral, it would be one thing. But the plan is (by every account) will actually result in HIGHER gas prices (possibly before the summer even ends). And then the tax comes back.
That’s like a 4 year old saying that they like it when mom gives them a candy bar when they need lunch. Crap! Mom’s supposed to make a sandwich and some soup and make sure that the kid eats healthy. Sure, the kid will act up a bit while they wait for her to cook – but a good mother won’t give a child candy for lunch. (Feel free to sub. father for mother if that applies to your world :-)
I don’t want to pay higher gas prices because Mark Penn has targeted in that some sub-demographic Hillary needs in Indiana really likes the idea.
That’s why I support Obama. He (and several other states) tried a tax holiday. Then they studied it … and found that it didn’t do anything positive. That’s the benefit of actual experience. It may not have been as glamorous as being the president’s wife, but it serves the current situation better. We need someone who’s actually faced and fixed (or not in the case of gas holidays) street-level problems. He has a career in elective office – Hillary has a career in politics and has only held one office.
Dangit … first time I’ve posted here. Please excuse the typos. I didn’t get the “preview” right.
welcome kgb999 – typo police only roam the front page posts and are not permitted down here in the comments
Oh … and back on topic. The question (about Dole) was a joke … right?
It’s actually oddly refreshing to feel like the attacks are coming from the GOP. That’s the fight we are really spoiling for (both camps … I think?). It makes the current situation seem less “Alice in Wonderland”.
If anyone was expecting greatness or fairness or human decency, Liddy Dole is the wrong person to ask.
