Hi folks, Cliff here again, of the soon-to-be-created Cliff Schecter’s Campaign Silo right here at FDL. It is exciting stuff.
But not quite as exciting as Marty Parrish’s day was yesterday, who found out what happens when you say something that John McCain doesn’t like. Mr. Parrish, for speaking truth to power, was dragged out of a McCain town hall meeting. Yes, he asked McCain whether he had ever called his wife a word that rhymes with runt. Which McCain did. How do I know? I wrote about it in my new book The Real McCain.
But I digress. Here is a description of what happened by Keith Dinsmore of The Huffington Post:
Marty Parrish was aware of John McCain’s history as an alleged adulterer and that he had left the wife who had raised his children while McCain was held captive in Vietnam for a rich, young trophy wife.
But last week, when Parrish — a business owner in Des Moines — read a HuffingtonPost article by Adam McKay, "Vetting the Candidates," that related how McCain had verbally abused Cindy McCain in front of reporters and staff, Parrish became both angry and concerned.
"A guy who would call his wife a trollop and a c–t just because she had ruffled his hair in front of five guys is not only a jerk, but a dangerous hothead if he ever gets his finger on the button," Parrish said Thursday evening.
"And since the mainstream media has decided to give McCain a free pass, I decided to stand up and, if they gave me an open mike, ask the question that the press refuses to touch," he explained. "Our country is in a serious crisis after nearly eight years of Bush, and America appears to be oblivious to the danger this guy (McCain) poses to our country," said Parrish.
So thanks to a citizen doing their part, the question finally got asked. And as you may have noticed, McCain refused to answer it. As the French would say, Quelle suprise. Marty Parrish is just the latest soul to find out what I have been trying to get across in my book and subsequent interviews: John McCain is no different than George W. Bush. Questions are not to be tolerated. Dissent will be crushed.
That folks, is The Real McCain.
P.S.: If you have a free moment, catch me on NPR today at 2:20 PM EST, discussing McCain, and perhaps the O’Reilly Factor tonight (yet to be 100% booked–still waiting).

So, Jane!
Thank you for this post, Jane.
Apologies for being OT,
Feingold’s JSC on the Constitution, hearing re “Secret Law” (Christy transcribed this yesterday) just started on CSpan 2.
fyi
Zed
Let’s hear it for freedom of speech!
I guess he should have just asked for Mccain’s rib recipe, huh?
or at least where in Costco one can find said ribs
or exactly WHICH bbq recipe IS that on foodtv.com?
“there are people here who don’t respect that kind of language”…
Mwahahahhaaa…
Score!!
Of course some people don’t like that kind of language! Did you use it? And when is a man justified in calling a woman that ugly word?
Sorry for the OT, but has this been discussed at FDL yet? Transition to New President in Wartime Concerns the Military
Cliff -
you are everywhere!
and props on the WSJ mention
So, did he?
Don’t ask! They’ll carry you away.
What a perfect addition to the lake!
Cliff, you ARE everywhere~! and ALL THE TIME! How do you manage that?
Where’s Bob Geiger? He sent an em out that said he was back and now blogging over at The Agonist, but I’m having a hard time finding him there. Is it me? (it usually is).
Thanks!
:)
SO good to see you here at the Lake all the time. your skin is getting water wrinkled.
Hi Cliff
Is there evidence that McBush told the secret service to throw the guy out- or is that just conjecture? It’s a great story in any event but it’s better if there’s proof that McBush was responsible for the eviction.
Are we feeding you well? You keep coming back.
Cliff, has McCain filed or threatened to file any lawsuits against you?
He would not have any success if the things you have written are true. And it might detract from his campaign.
What are your thoughts on the two dead women connected with the DC prostitution caper? Stinks to me.
hey there, still sore?
Snack time?
Very sore, but comfortable if I stay in one position. Still haven’t done the bath thing, but hoping that helps. On the other hand, I am certain that the procedure helped and can’t wait till they go back in and fix the right side of my spine.
tee hee
good stuff, nearly spit up some coffee
great reading cliff and I really look forward to your posts and log here at the lake
Why can McCain say c**t and the questioner can’t? Answer the man’s question McCain. Either you did or you didn’t call your wife a make-up-trowelling trollop and a c**t.
McCain called his wife a nasty word that we cannot even use on FDL.
Nasty old man.
Absolutely.
Thank you.
McCain– dicktator- in- waiting.
uh oh.
that’s a good point but really, why wouldn’t the questioner just ask;
“did you or did you not call your wife in public the word that rhymes with hunt”
I don’t think progressives need to stoop to the level of mccain and the point is better made if we do not
That is a load of BS from Mullen…entirely political. The positions that would necessarily change with a change of administration (Sec’y of Defense, etc) won’t leave commanders without orders. It sounds as if Mullen thinks commanders can’t handle continued operations without being micromanaged. Its much more likely that he is worried about a new administration that expects the Geneva Convention to be enforced.
yes, he is. I just went here where they are making fun of him.. It is childish but it makes me smile
You have a mind like a steel trap. That is an excellent way to manage it.
I’v been saying for some time I cannot believe this administration of bigots and masogonists are amassing all this power and will willingly hand it off to a women, a black man or both
ain’t gonna happen
do not forget, they were NOT elected into office they took office in a silent coup with help from the legasy of bush’s father and reagan
they are not in office through the electorate and in my opinion nor do they intend to leave through the electorate
sorry
hang on to hats, fasten seatbelt, ride will be rough
you have to keep hitting the refresh button and you get a new message
you will get a new message. sheesh
it is indeed a load of bullcrap, especially since the military wants nothing more then to get rid of these depots that have depleted our armed forces to the point of ruin
if anyone is saying it they have signed on to the sick fraternity of maniacs known as the pnac
The best thing about this is the there is now documentary evidence (first of many, I hope) about the Thin Skin of JohnMcVain.
Remember, he’s the anointed Decider Guy who will lead us all to liberty, peace and prosperity in a police state run by his lobbyist friends.
He’s already shown with his MCA torture support and POS GI Bill that he could give a rats ass about the average soldier and sailor, and he knows and understands their worlds. Imagine his indifference to the average American, not hard to do if you heard his answer to the Stephalumpamus softball about healthcare a couple of weeks ago.
But as always, he’ll be out there asking “do you believe me or your lying eyes”…
Marty Parrish is not be a real reporter. So, my guess is that he slept in a Holiday Inn Express on Wednesday night.
So he didn’t even answer the question first?!! The nerve!
well said.
And I bet he’s a preprogramed winner on the Diebold machines.
Not finished reading the article yet, but at first glance it sounds like Mullen thinks it would be the perfect time for a coup.
Oh, and did anyone notice from the MSM footage how sparse, dragged in and drugged his backdro(o)p folks looked?
we are in a coup right now, this administration did not take office through the electorate they took office in a coup
My question is why is the Secret Service all of a sudden becoming the arbiter of Free Speech? The man asked a question, not presented a weapon. Have we come to the point where Law Enforcement protects candidates from unpleasant questions at taxpayer expense?
spot on!
(a question I have been ranting about (mostly to myself) for a long, long time now!)
Ding ding ding!!
Yes, the pen (or in this case, the word) is indeed mightier than the sword.
Well, I wondered aloud how the TOP BRASS would deal with Iran, so I guess I’m going to have to be much more circumspect in future.
Mullen’s concern about ‘the transition’ is touching, to say the least. Beyond that, it is frightening and suggests that the BRASS isn’t too bright these days, even if they are all shiney … object-ively speaking.
Thanks for the link, TexBetsy.
Hey Cliffster! How goes it?
By the way: Keith Olbermann over at DKos asks this rather interesting question:
I believe I do not have a problem with mccain asking the ss to remove anyone who curses at his appearances, I have no problem with this scenario and I would do the same even if I did not say the word
exactly. wtf? did the secret service decide to do this on their own – or were they asked to by someone from the campaign?
The next question for McCain… “Senator McCain, would you have me thrown out of this event were I to ask you if you believe it’s appropriate for a man to call the woman who funds his presidential campaign a C—?”
I absolutely agree. This sounds to me as if the General is trying to say “We should be the ones making the wide-ranging strategic decisions, not civilian leaders.” It’s almost “7 Days in May” in its tenor.
Given that this war has been broad-ranging in its economic effects and in our diplomatic standing in the world one wonders if the General believes the military should take over the responsibilities on those fronts as well?
Maybe he thinks that we should transition to a system like the Argentine Generals or Pinochet?
Some have criticized Obama for saying that he largely agreed with Gen. Petraeus in terms of his TACTICS. But people didn’t note that this is a back-handed compliment. By extension, he’s saying that Petraeus, and by extension all these Generals who have survived the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld purge of those that dare disagree, have utterly failed in terms of STRATEGY…particularly long-term strategic interests of this country.
Rather they seem more intent on feathering their own long-term investment strategies when they retire.
Well you certainly don’t expect that this wasn’t both 1) a “ground rule” set long ago for his public appearances, and 2) something that McCain would dirty his hands over by giving the order himself?
Plausible deniability is a phrase that is familiar to many of us.
The questioner did not curse, he asked a legitimate question using McCain’s own reported words, about McCain’s use of those words (an epithet) towards his wife. I guess that we just don’t need to know that huh? I’m not sure how else he could have asked the question…
“So, Senator McCain did you really refer to your wife as the most derogatory slang term for a womans genitalia?”
you serious?
Seems to me that that kind of language should be an embarrasment to anyone or anyone in any party. Also, is that kind of language really necessay ?
Well, either he did…or he didn’t. And I can’t imagine Cliff putting something in his book that he had not fact-checked, so I think Sen. McNobrain actually used that nasty word to his wife. In front of other people. Which means that he could probably be termed a misogynistic a**hole and damned rude.
How about that?
Well, I was talking about a military coup, but I understand what you mean. But the second term there is no excuse for. I know, I know, many believe Bush stole the election, but he couldn’t have done it if it weren’t too close for comfort anyway. They may do it again next time if things keep going as they are. One of my biggest fears is that the media seems to be falling right into Rev. Wright’s great plan to scuttle Obama’s campaign for petty reasons having more to do with his own career than what’s good for the country, and the electorate seems to be trying very hard to fall for his scheme, too. Since Hillary is still part of the old guard, and she seems to be teaming up with the “vast right wing conspiracy” ala Richard Mellon Scaife, et al, even if she had a chance, we won’t by the time they’re done with this plot. Pretty disgusting if you ask me!
The questioners big error was in using McSames own obscenity in the question. This give McBush a perfect opportunity to shut him down without bothering to issue a denial.
I think they were just standin’ by their man.
At least they didn’t taser the questioner …
And they didn’t rendition, extrordinarily, or disappear him.
He was probably lucky. Saying such a word in public! For Shame!! What is this nation sinking to? / (All snark ….)
;~D
You are correct, but the fact that the Secret Service was involved in removing a questioner bothers me far more than the use of a naughty word.
So only the candidate himself is allowed to use profanity? Sure wish someone got him on tape in a video with what he said. Sure hope he manages to do it again, this time on tape in full public view. BTW, if it takes an incident like this to set him off, so be it!
But clearly doing it front of the PRESS (as opposed to voters) is perfectly apopros? After all the Press LUV McCain and will keep their traps shut. The public is a whole different animal.
Not that I believe the tale, however…I think John McCains’ best response to this would be saying “Mussed my hair…I’ve been bald as Charlie Brown since my former wife threw scalding oil on my head for calling her “an obese sow”. So clearly these stories are incorrect.”
Well, using that more delicate — yet still on-point — alternative allusion would not have given McBu’ush the out he got. When I saw/heard the clip, my immediate reaction was ‘well, beyond providing him a red herring deflective opportunity, that’ll backfire tactically. We can all just be ‘outraged’ by the c-word, and forget about any truthful answer to the question.’
This is the more disturbing part, IMHO.
The guy made his point- McBush would never have admitted to the incident anyway- and the questioner got maximum impact out of his question by actually using the word “c***”.
And here’s some more questions that’ll get you thrown out of a McCain “townhall meeting.”
-Is it true your campaign staff has a record number of lobbyists or ex-lobbyists on it?
-Is it true that in 2005, referring to the troops in Iraq you said, “”I would hope that we could bring them all home.”
-Pastor Hagee wrote, “Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist.” Are you still proud to have his endorsement?
-Your plan to remove Russia from the G-8 is being called the most radical foreign policy proposal in decades. Do you still stand by it?
Heh, that’s just for starters. We haven’t even gotten to Vicki Iseman yet.
Meanwhile, back at the war:
WASHINGTON — President Bush sent lawmakers a $70 billion request Friday to fund U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan into next spring, which would give the next president breathing room to make his or her own war policy.
Friday’s request fills in the details of the $70 billion placeholder that the White House asked for when it sent its budget to Congress in February. The money is for the budget year that begins Oct. 1.
Congressional analysts say Bush’s request would bring the total spending since Sept. 11, 2001, to fight terrorism and conduct the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to $875 billion.
Cheney taught them all how when he told Leahy to go F*&k himself! Is that appropriate from a VP to a Senator? BTW, did anyone ever bother to listen to the Nixon Whitehouse Tapes or read the transcripts to see or hear to how these assholes talk to each others out of the public earshot. These people are not saints, and anyone who thinks for a minute that they are role models is deluding themselves.
Hey if you can get arrested for wearing an obscenity free tshirt, I stop being surprised.
LOL. I imagine there’s more than just a kernal of truth there.
I was sitting in the airport yesterday, and Jack Cafferty was reading emails from viewers. One said (paraphrasing) that McCain was not doing as well among younger voters because he reminded them of their doddering old relatives that come over and stay too long.
In 2000, McCain had some broader attraction to younger voters, but I suspect that has gone the way of the dinosaur by now. Those voters are probably tired of the policies of W and don’t want more of it. Those who are today of that age (18-24?) are not going to support someone who might send their asses to the Middle East as part of the New 100Years War™.
Thanks Cliff.
Changing leaders during wartime is only a problem with banana republics, or so I always had thought.
Oh, wait…Is he saying we’re a banana republic now? Now that rule of law has been undermined?
Come on, McCain was in the air force. Of course he uses those words.
OT: Did anyone else see the footnote in today’s news that the D.C. Madame has committed suicide? How convenient, for someone !
I believe McCain was a Navy pilot, not an Air Force one.
It’s the second person invoved in the case to suicide.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/192709.php
geeze
That from a comment I made on an earlier thread. Here’s another piece from WMNF Tampa where the interview with Mr Haj is replayed and they talk live with his attorney in London. The program is called True Talk. Scroll down to the Archives column and click on today’s date. The second half of the show is also worth a listen.
Speaking of the Navy, I’ve been watching the PBS series “Carrier” this week. Lotta bleep-outs throughout.
That’s what I said!
Has anyone introduced Cliff to the FDL LLN nomenclature for the word that rhymes with runt?
clown car
don’t ask me how it got started.
Thank you Cliff for your service to our country.
TexBetsy, I wish you good health and happiness.
And it is good to be lucky, Hugh was here earlier today and I mentioned Mary Gade and he said he would check it out and NOW, it is Number 348 on Hugh’s List.
Annapolis graduate, not Air Force.
There’s a difference.
Just ask any Air Force pilot
^_^
If you watched the night landing piece I think you’ll see why it is just plain stupid to try to hammer Mc Cain on his flying ability unless the person doing the whining has done it themselves. That doesn’t even take into account flying when some one is shooting at you.
Oh really.
Yep, angie, they sure did look hung over or worse. Makes me wonder if they were recruited off the street and offered some pocket money for their trouble. ;~)
High testosterone flyers indeed
“Pitching Deck”
YIKES!!
Was that ever tense. Man…
Navy…Navy fighter pilot (lands and takes off from carriers).
It’s an intriguing series, I find myself being drawn in, even tho it often plays like a recruiting miniseries. Did you know the producer is Mel Gibson?
lemme look for the linkerage
He was a Naval Aviator (we’re not pilots, dammit …LOL). He was the guy who, if you watch the USS Forrestal fire video is seen jumping off the nose of the A4 next to the one hit by the Zuni rocket.
Unreal
a little dodgey but it is a curse to ask the question if mccain wants to deny the charge, it isn’t a curse to ask the question if mccain admits to it
the only acceptable way to ask the quesiton as far as I am concerned is to say;
“did you or did you not call your wife the word that rhymes with hunt in public”
we are asking the question because the word itself is offensive and yes, the word remains offensive even as a legitimate question
The Carrier PBS show was pretty damn awesome. The biggest difference from my days was the women on the boat (we just started having them in the mid-80s).
The episode with the guy who had 15 bolters was intense… and those F/A-18 drivers have got to hate being the last event night recovery tanker (yes, that’s inside baseball, sorry) but I laughed my ass off over that.
Fighter guys flying “tankers”. Too Funny.
What’s the difference between an aviator and a pilot?
“did you or did you not call your wife the word that rhymes with hunt in public”
McMaverquack’s just not my type: a real hunt ‘n pecker.
So is the question whether or not it was right to kick the guy out for using “the word”..
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that it was correct to throw him out. We don’t even allow someone to use that word HERE!
It’s kinda odd- a sort of superstition about the use of a word- but most humans seem to share the superstition.
But word iws even the flight deck crew called McCain “ACE”…for taking out five planes…unfortunately they were ours. McCain took out more Naval aircraft than any North Vietnamese (or Soviet) flyer, apparently.
So what is all this going to amount to, we gonna find out McCain is a sexist and he’ll lose?
Navy v. Air Force. :)
Man, it really was. I’ve Tivo’d the whole series. The look on the Captains’s face at one point during Pitching Deck…”shit, if I lose a pilot and/or plane tonight, I am so fucked.”
noun nomenclature
I would have thought an “aviator” would include any air-crew (navigators, bombadiers, bomb crew, gunners, etc.). But maybe the parlance is different in the Navy.
It’s on the PBS wesbite
Why use different words for the same thing in the two different services?
I’m also gonna buy the DVD set. Hope they remove the “bleeps”.
skill
Ha. You mean like a fatigues or utilities. duece and a half or six by? And you don’t want to know what the Army Dress Cover was called.
(that’s what you call throwin a bomb jest fer the hell of it)
here’s a question for everyone that thinks it’s okay to use the word “c***” in public;
why do you think nobody uses the word “n****r”?
I bet any amount of money each and every one of you would use the term “the “n” word”
same thing, it is NOT okay to use the word “c***” in public even as a legitimate referanced question
I already posted this a few threads ago, but here it is again.
Ten Things you should know about McCain
I haven’t a clue as to what you’re talking about, but I think smgumby answered my Q in 109.
Garrison Cap
I refer you to Tevye, in “Fiddler on the Roof”. Tradition.
We always used to say that in the Air Force, they tell you what you can do. In the Navy they just told us what we couldn’t do.
Having worked with AF guys, it’s a mindset more than anything else. We had an AF guy on the boat on an exchange tour and he was sort of flabbergasted at the cultural differences. Not to say he didn’t adapt pretty quickly though.
moderators, please look at my 112 and edit according to your opinion but I would like to see some answers to that question if you can edit it accordingly
Piss-cutter? With an “after-burner crush”…
It’s all terminology for the same thing. I grew up in a Navy family but was in the Army, I can confuse anyone!
Just think. If McCain had gone to the AF Academy, he’d now be a retired Delta pilot. Sigh. What might have been.
speaking of mccain saying rediculous things, this is interesting from think progress right now;
Awesome link!
Character-driven Carrier to sail in April
I have a buddy that was an A-6 driver, he’s old pals with McCain. People have no fucking idea how insane these dude are. (this is not critical)
Thank ya, Thank ya very much!
I like the list because it’s conservatives knocking him and because it gives scores on his votes on issues we care about.
This secret service “noose” incident is very alarming…
” An instructor “observed a rope tied in a loop, which was interpreted as a noose, in one of the training buildings” at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Beltsville, Maryland, on April 16, the Secret Service said.
The instructor is a 38-year-old African American member of the Secret Service’s Uniformed Division.
A white agent admits leaving it, but it is unclear if the rope was intended to be a noose or was tied in a loop for some other reason. The white agent is currently on administrative leave while the Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility investigates.”
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITI…..ice.noose/
more…
That bad boy is getting emailed to every right-winger I know
Army and Air Force are not all that far apart in terminology since Air Force began as Army.
But they did rename some things just for sh*ts and grins…
Yea, except everyone I even knew in the AF in the Nam was TDY and got that xtra$$$!
“Some leaders in the Democratic Party are playing with fire. They think that they can betray the will of millions of voters and choose Hillary Clinton as the nominee, regardless of whether or not she is the choice of the voters. We can’t let this happen. It would be the largest disenfranchisement in modern history, and it would mean the Democratic Party giving their stamp of approval to a clear and consistent pattern of race-baiting by the Clinton campaign.
If we make our voices heard, we can stop it. Please join us in signing an open letter to leaders in the Democratic Party — DNC Chair Howard Dean, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and all superdelegates — demanding that they reject an outcome that involves trampling voting rights and legitimizing the politics of division and fear: “

Do you folks get this little notice? This is the race that will keep on giving.
I just heard a nightmare report about Blackwater/under a different name going full speed a head to put its private goons out for border patrol at San Diego. Wonder what kind of murder and torture they have in mind for our neighbors to the south. When or when did we start living in a militia, armed society? I hear one or more scary things every day. Even when I am not looking
The series really did a good job of highlighting issues that I think needed to be brought out. The young sailor who fathered the child learning about WIC, and what it would provide for his newborn and family (even though his alleged girlfriend dumped him).
The superstar Petty Officer who ended up making bad choices and literally “fell from grace” because he broke the fraternization rules (very common, I have a friend who lost his command over it).
All the aspects of family separation… from the CATCC officer who had to get a judge to help her get her kids to Hawaii for the Tiger Cruise to the Marine who was rediscovering his wife and newborn son.
Not so much the Top Gun Bullshit (yay!), but lots of focus on the men and women who keep the operation going 24/7/365 and what they have to put up with.
The Mexican drug dudes ain’t exactly Pollyana now.
I watch that and then try to think what it was like on that APD my old man spent 3 1/2 years in the Pacific on. . .damn.
This is a rally nice site Green Dragons The Crosby is the ship of interest, APD 17, DD 164.
As I recall, Blackwater has already done a lousy, dishonorable job in Iraq. The little blond Prince is still CEO, and I have no reason to believe they will be any more successful b/c the target is closer to home.
I’m not disputing that.
Senator McCain, is it true that the people who clapped at your smug, cowardly response to the question about what you called your wife all have the clap?
Well, it seems to me that disgusting language like that used is not something that I would want to be associated with. And, to use it in mixed company might be considered rude. Also, to use that language when talking to a probable POTUS is just simply stupid, childish and representative of a lack of education.
Here’s why the term “Clown Car” (remember when you were little, and you went to the circus, and a car came out and stopped, the doors opened and 250 clowns piled out?)…
http://www.flickr.com/photos/skyzyx/249270409/
BTW, it was a trick. there really WEREN’T 250 clowns in the little VW beetle.
