Awwww. I see that our illustrious governor, Smilin’ Tim Pawlenty, has already done a Lieberman and whispered into his would-be running mate’s ear, because John Sidney McCain III’s doin’ the ol’ walkback again:
Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Thursday backed off his assertion that pork-barrel spending led to last year’s deadly bridge collapse in Minneapolis.
With Democrats criticizing him for citing wasteful spending as the cause of the disaster, McCain told reporters in Cleveland, "No, I said it would have received a higher priority, which it deserved."
That statement was in contrast to McCain’s remarks to reporters aboard his campaign bus as it rolled through Pennsylvania on Wednesday: "The bridge in Minneapolis didn’t collapse because there wasn’t enough money. The bridge in Minneapolis collapsed because so much money was spent on wasteful, unnecessary pork-barrel projects."
Um, sorry, but no:
Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board suspect a design flaw — undersize steel plates — and heavy loads of construction materials as the cause of the disaster Aug. 1, according to preliminary findings.
Democrats accused McCain of using a tragedy that killed 13 people and injured 145 others to make a political point.
"The last thing we need is a misinformed presidential aspirant posturing at our expense," said Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., said, "He is manipulating a tragedy that took 13 lives in order to advance his election campaign."
Even Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota said McCain was wrong.
"The bridge didn’t collapse because there wasn’t enough money," Coleman said during a conference call with reporters.
When our local news media, normally quite polite to Republicans, is openly aghast, you know McCain screwed up. And the local members of the reality-based community have cut loose with some fine screeds on both McCain and Pawlenty (such as this one, this one and this one) that make the local mainstream media coverage look positively restrained.
News flash, Johnny: We just got done passing a gas-tax hike — the first in two decades — along with an increase in motor-vehicle license fees. We even overrode Pawlenty the Pothole King’s veto to do it, with several Republicans voting with the Democrats to override.
Wanna know why?
Because we’re friggin’ sick and tired of collapsing bridges, that’s why.
We’re sick of driving around what used to be the best damn’ roads in the country, only to risk breaking an axle because Tim Pawlenty rammed massive tax cuts favoring the rich down our throats back when he ran Minnesota’s lower chamber. These tax cuts, of coursed, cause massive revenue shortages, which Pawlenty solved by slashing state programs across the board. However, Pawlenty has no objection to making local taxpayers foot the bill for a $550 million sports stadium to ease the strain on the pocketbook of Carl Pohlad, the richest man in baseball. The money that went for Pohlad’s playground could have bought two new 35W bridges with a few million left over.
By the way: The cost of the new gas-tax and license fee increases? Around about $50 to $75 for most people; less for some, more for others. That’s a lot less than the cost of a new tire and rim. Or axle. Or wheelchair. Or coffin.
Just keep talkin’, Johnny. Dig that hole a little deeper, eh? Let’s see you lose the state by twenty points in November. Keep talkin’ smack and you will.

Awwww, Johnnie had a moment!
That Johnnie…
Swoooon, that is fantastic. Thank you
Hey Pw here is DIGG for ya and the great post for FLIPPER McSame!
Uncle Ronnie never remembered what he said one day to the next and look where it got him! John has to be forgiven for believing the same strategy can be a winner for him as well. Btw, he’s not pretending, he has no clue what he said yesterday-hell, five minutes ago…
Aloha, PW! I was checking my email today and Greenwald sent me this announcement…
He’s introducing Arianna for tomorrow’s Book Salon…
Did I ever mention FDL hosts the awesomest Book Salons…? 8-)
Bridge over Troubled Earmarks
Heh, Pawlenty was just as quick as Holy Joe, eh? ;-)
Simon & Garfunkle will never forgive you for that one Punaise :>)
there’s the thing pw, we are raising taxes to fund the giveaways from reagan and this moron in office
first things first;
reagan did NOT lower taxes and democrats need to HAMMER that point, reagan raised taxes MORE then any peacetime president in history before him, not only by dollar figures but by gnp
and in raising taxes he then went on to give middle class assets to the wealthiest people on the planet
so these wealthy people get to THINK there was a decrease in taxes but even if we consider that tax give away, the net and the gross of taxes went UP UNDER REAGAN
however since the middle class cannot shoulder the burden of the giveaways to the wealthiest people on the planet, those funds must come from somewhere
they come from our infrastructure, we are no longer inspecting our infrastructure to the level they need, we are no longer prosecuting those that violate safety standards
this is what MUST be pointed out by the democrats, that WE will be the party that LOWERS taxes
we will say the following;
“the democrats plan to remove the tax increases of the reagan adminsitration, contrary to republican propaganda reagan raised taxes he did NOT lower them
we will lower taxes to those levels, the revenue to fund this lowering of taxes will come from those assets that were deliberately taken from the middle class and our infrastructure, we will re claim these assets which belong to our infrastucture and our middle class
this will indeed restart the American economy, the engine of the American economy is NOT the upper class it is the middle class and the tax strategy that turned this economy into the beacon of progress is all the wold once admired is the strategy that targets the middle class, NOT the strategy that targets those who have more wealth then they can possibly spend
the DEMOCRATS will lower taxes back to the levels before reagan raised them”
get me a democrat to say that and watch the republicans heads explode
but, but, but, we haven’t talked about whether or not the people are still talkin’ about the pastor… and whether or not people in NC and IN are buyin’ Hillary’s gas taxcut distraction… and….
on a more sobering note, Chris Jansing had a really powerful piece tonight on the impact of the economy on seniors who are driven to the point of living in the back of a van. Did a little piece about it, but this link takes you direct to the videoclip.
Whenever this whole campaign season starts to wear you down, remember why we must prevail in November. Like Christy and Jane remind us, it’s the Supremes, the rule of law, the restoring of checks and balances. But it’s also stories like Jansing told tonight. Of the vulnerable who depend on their government to protect them from predators…and yes, to keep them safe when they ride over bridges.
You go, PW! This often-weekend Minnesotan shares your sentiments on Paw-paw-paw-lenty and the Minnesota Rethugs.
and speaking of mccain flip flopping all over the place to satisfy his base, check this out which think progress was kind enough to supply;
so the democrat can really hammer at this man for that statement when he says he wants to stay in Iraq forever
wow. great post. makes me glad that i’m not a repug
true but that gas tax thing is still complete and utter bullshit
From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
At the conclusion of a town hall held this morning outside in Denver, McCain decided to toss in a plug for his upcoming energy policy rollout. But in the midst of decrying the dangers of Americans reliance on foreign oil, McCain seemed to suggest that this reliance caused the current struggle in Iraq.
“My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will — that will then prevent us — that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East,” McCain said.
It’s the oil stupid.
Making Flippy Flop
one has to wonder the marketing potential for the combined words gas and holiday
Think Progress just posted this…
What was that again about ‘distancing’ himself from Bush? Cripes, you couldn’t get a piece of paper edgewise between those two.
People really didn’t think the Republican candidate was talking to the Republican President.
Don’t bogart that. . .
All lobbyists report to Cheney. /s
Cripes, you couldn’t get a piece of paper edgewise between those two
perhaps, but there is that piece of toilet paper trailing behind McSame’s trousers, and the “kick me” sign taped to his back.
I smell a Turd Blossom amongst ‘em…! ;-)
It was take your Yak to work day in Seattle. . .KO!
not only do they talk every day but mccain had to get bush’s approval before he crisized him on katrina last week
a week shallow brained puppet, that is mccain
Heh!
Yea, well he isn’t running in mensa land now is he?
so we DID send them there for oil but we won’t do it again under Mccooky’s plan.
Mkay
Yea, cuz we’re gonna WIN!
At the beginning, I was not cynical to believe this. But more and more it’s a comment on the obvious. Is this what our young men and women agreed to? Next, Iran. Not a paper thin between us and the aggressive Israel.
when combined with politician, the potential is endless
we didn’t go to get oil, we went to prevent too much oil on the market place
we actually invaded an oil rich nation and wound up with less oil
who’da thunk
They agreed to do what the CIC told them to do.
teh bottom of his class and the only reason he even graduated was his daddy
Oh god, not again. Please.
Well I the administration told us that it wasn’t oil and McCooky just contradicted that statement
I guess the CIC made a mistake…but will he admit it??… NFH!
Yeah! I like that
And this just occurred to me:
What if these politicians went about fund-raising for their campaigns like they did with taxes?
The poor and middle class would be asked to make the $1000+ donations, and only the rich would be able to give the 5 and 10 dollar amounts.
Of course, that wouldn’t work. And this ridiculous tax scheme we have now doesn’t work, either.
let me say it, this misses the elephant in the room
in the same lead think progress notes that mccain actually had to get bush’s approval before he critisized him over katrina
no kidding
Have we not learned the dangers of electing a c- student???
Not to mention that condenscending ‘my friends’ bullshit
I don’t think it was no mistake!
Rachel!!
everyone, including greenspan knew it was about the oil
now mccain cements it and he is gonna be dancin and dancin and dancin tomorrow
me can’t wait to see it, there will be a sight to behold
we never elected bush, this is a coup, a silent bloodless coup
I will never admit this country was ever so stupid to elect a man who is clearly challenged intelectually
Butt Butt he said there were WMDs there and then he couldn’t find them…. I saw him on the TV saying that! They were all agreeing with him then /s
“The Press Corpse is not following up on McInsane’s gaffes…” Go Rachel!
Hillary is a fucking genius and she’s going to obliterate Iran, so what’ a GPA got to do with it?
Does anyone recall the wonderful song from Best Little WhoreHouse in TX? Have to dance the little 2 step, dance the little 2 step. A double talking TX Gov. Like W, Like Mc2. It’s great.
Rave our soldiers did what they were ordered they really didn’t have a choice… I just wish the CIC could be held accountable for his actions.
ditto
It is quite depressing that the election was close enough to jack. Should never have been that close.
Yes, it was stolen but it couldn’t have been possible ahd the elections not been somewhat close. Face it, sections of this country were that stupid and still support the asshat.
As someone who has dealt with Military Academy types, even the bottom of the class is someone who earned a pretty damn good education.
A lot of the “bottom of the class/class standing” noise at one of the military academies is not based on grades. It is based on a lot of peripheral stuff such as “deportment and demerits.” These are given for stupid stuff like failing parts of a room inspection or being caught out after lights out.
Unlike the current WH occupant, a C student from the academies is NOT the so-called “Gentleman’s C.” The curricula is not something that allows you to skate.
okay, you got me on that. Stupid statement I made. Mea Culpa
we need to make campaigns publicly financed plain and simple
in the mean time there is a method of allowing corporate contribution without restricting their “free speech{(which does NOT exist, corporations are NOT people and they are NOT entitled to constitutionaal protection)
here is the method;
“you can contribute to a campaign or a party but your contribution must remain anonymous so you will not be able to but law”
that right there is pretty simple stuff and definately do-able
Is their an echo in here? Of course you always say things better than I do.
I didn’t finish that sentence.
Mea culpa for contributing to stereotypes.
I don’t think it’s stupid. It’s natural to want to go after everything we can but this one doesn’t wash. Neither does “he was a bad aviator”.
agreed but he is still an asshat
Most surely
Just trying to reinforce your point that going after the military education/service on McCain is a no-win proposition and only reinforces the “DFH’s hate the military” stereotype that allows the TradMed to be lazy and not do their jobs.
Got ya 5X5
I do not believe it was close
florida did not vote for this moron and the only way they were able to make it look close was by caging
this is what bothers me revbev;
there is no way a democrat can loose this election, this president and the republican party are a pox, they are reviled, nobody even wants to admit they were once republicans
we are mobilizing more votes to get this fascist party out of office then ever in history
how on earth can mccain be polling close to hillary or obama?
the answer is he can’t, they are gaming the polls as we speak so it might not look like the election is stolen yet again
they are going to cage, they are going to turn voters away because they “don’t have the proper id”, they are going to have too few polls in democratic precincts, they are going to flip the electronic votes
it won’t even matter if there is a paper trail, votes will be flipped
I cannot possible believe any republican can poll close to obama or hillary and I believe they are gaming those polls right now
That is quite the stunning comment.
I’m also serious about your clarity and equanimity.
Thank you.
He doesn’t know whether to shit or go blind.
but we are are led to believe he did not “earn” his passing grade, that it is indeed a gentlemans grade by virtue of his dad
Dang Raven you sound like you were in communications while serving… /s
I mildly disagree, Bra… Kerry was swifted boated with his service record, and, McCain’s ‘Service Ace’ status is fair game…! ;-)
Heh!
972nd Signal Bn and 107th SIg Co, 1st Signal Bde. I was such a loser that I didn’t even have a confidential clearance. Half the guys couldn’t even talk to me! Course when I came back with the goods. . . .
Reverse Ace McCain? Yeah — though to be truthful, the Forrestal one wasn’t his fault.
Heh, he was MI…! ;-)
Yea, and the SB stuff was a lie. We have far too much real stuff on this weenie to be stooping to their tactics.
ACE you say he was an ACE??? Dam I thought that he wrecked several jets… not counting the one he got shot down in.. but an ACE how many enemy planes did he shoot down??
Arty in Korea.
By whom are we lead to believe this? By the McCain hate sites run by the same crowd that backed the Swift Boaters against Truth that slimed Kerry? That should be enough right there to make you pause.
Has anyone ever wondered how many folks from McCain’s initial plebe class washed out of the Naval Academy prior to graduation?
Please, there are just so many contemporary reasons to go after McCain and knock him down. The value of attacking his military education and career is a loss leader compared to all the other points that are right there available to us in the daily news reports.
I certainly understand those points. There is a way that Florida was startingly unique. I can only say I hope you are terribly, terribly wrong. Most of agree of the dangers to this country. What is the resort if we are seriously gamed? Who knows. One would like to think big changes in the Congress would mean greater pushback, but recent evidence has been pretty discouraging.
Still have the 4 others, actually, 3 others, while he was merely tooling around…! A SAM caused one, too…!
That ain’t what he meant.
You’d mentioned MI with MAC-V tho…! ;-)
I stand corrected the only thing I can recall now was I was part of the 22nd signal Group in Germany… And I know what you mean.. we had one of the techs make regular trips to Morocco in his 57 Porsche :>)
I wonder if McCrazy verbally abused Cindy today? I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t like the idea of an abusive husband running our nation. He needs anger therapy, but as we’ve all witnessed over the past few months, John McCrazy blames everyone but himself for his problems. Sound familiar? Yep! We’ve had 8 years of that kind of attitude!
Corrected? You were right.
I get not going after him with regards to his military record but of course the inverse is at play. He is running on the fact that he was military/POW, etc.
By ‘Service’, I’d meant that he’d lost five US fighters without a single ‘kill’ …
Oh yeah:>) But I hadn’t heard 5×5 for years… used it many times testing circuits and on the order wire..
Bill Moyers with Kathleen Hall Jamison; she’s interesting.
Would not be surprised if he did
Yea. I knew the lingo, I was just a dopey truck driver. Got ya lima charlie.
During my years as a Commo Chief, we’d rarely use 5X5, we used Lima Charlie… Loud and Clear…! ;-)
Now talking about Wright
It might be fair game, but going after it might also backfire.
Heh! Old habits die hard, eh? ;-)
crooks and liars has a pretty good piece up right now about fisa and retro active immunity
progressives use that blog for referance and I hope they read the comments there and here, I just posted this over there
He flew A-4 Attack aircraft. They went after ground targets not other planes. The F-4 Thud was a bomber-fighter.
I was in before you… we didn’t use lima charlie….but …
*sigh* Dan Abrams is doing a whole special on the Obama vs Wright (in their own words)
this is important because it will have an effect on:
a) Iraq
b) Foreign policy
c) Domestic Policy
d) Economy
e) how much of an audience share the MSM can pull
perris, EW and bmaz are all over it too…!
True, good point, but, he still had a dismal track record…! ;-)
I just don’t think we will ever make any progress with this approach.
Moyers did point out how much harder all have been on Wright than others like Hagee, Graham, Falwell, who have mostly gotten a pass for evil “bombs”, something about race, you know.
actually I read that on wiki, do not have the exact page but it said straight up it was not acceptable for him to fail out of his school
in any event his intellectual capacity seems to have diminished since then and I think he is not nearly as coherent as even a few years ago
LC, Wilco, and Roger, were are primary means of acknowledgement…! ;-)
Me neither!
I’m glad he pointed that out but it is all so much crap as it has nothing to do with any of the candidates. I’m more interested in the comments Mccooky made today regarding the war and this assinine gas tax break.
but thanks for the update. it is much appreciated
Just curious and completely ignorant on the nature of a question I have, which you may be able answer.
Are most air force pilots allowed to crash up to four planes during training?
What about “over and out”? And don’t forget, never say repeat to a red leg.
Pakalolo
Ahhhh, those were the days, now I see things in real black and white.
Good discussion about how Ob is rehabilitating himself. HRC on Fox to look adversarial
It’s not encouraged. Good thing he was a naval aviator huh?
The fact that his survival of five plus years of torture over thirty years ago and that he is now 72 years old with the concurrent mental diminishment (see John Murtha’s talk from earlier this week) are perfectly rational and legitimate points to make.
We can applaud his service while Concern Trolling over the obvious effect it had to have had upon him.
But as I mentioned, class standing/ranking at a military academy is for more than just the academics. And the academics at the academies are such, mostly engineering related, that even the bottom of the class rank far higher than at many other universities.
Obama apparently has the entire hour of Meet the Press on Sunday. Timmy will get to pounce.
SD, I gotta unass this AO, I can’t hack this sos about McCain’s flyin.
Viet Nam vets against John McCain.
Thanks. And Hill is on ABC with Geroge, if you can believe it.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over

Yep, I agree, them Arty boyz wouldn’t appreciate it…! BTW, I’ve noticed they couldn’t shoot very straight…! ;-)
I wish I could say that. Before the fall of the Berlin Wall and then Soviet Russia my passport was restricted because of my access. Had to get into Berlin with documents I got in Marseilles.
Just for the record ES, those are the same folks who pushed the Swift Boats cr*p on Kerry so take it with a grain of salt.
adversarial to whom? part of the dem base?
I have to tell you dakine01, a few years ago I actually thought mccain would unite this country if he ran for president and I thought the democrats would have a real battle, I thought he would get republicans, moderates and even democrats
I remember watching him during a few congressional hearings where he was dressing down some of rumsfelds cronies, I also remember him going after rice and the pdb
if he had remained a true patriot and true to the ideals I believed he stood at the time I think he might have actually made a great president
but now because of this election I find out how many times he changed his vote because of lobbiests, I find out how no principle of his will stand in the way of appeasing bush and the neo con base
I have grown disdain for the man I once respected.
I am from a military family and we respect those in the armed forces more then those who are not and I gave mccain that kind of respect at one time
however when I see someone who graduated 5 from the bottom of their class and I find out just how influential their parents, it is hard to believe they would have even graduated had they not had that pedigree
5 from the bottom with mccain’s pedegree earns to me less respect then 5 from the bottom without military family
Thanks!
I think Obama can handle Timmeh.
that is the fact, jack.
Seems to me John McCain only cares about himself:

besides Hillary will be on lil bits show on ABC. It is billed as a townhall meeting of sorts. I’m sure they will really talk about the issues that concern voters like saving $30 over the course of the gas tax holiday at the expense of infrastructure construction jobs.
That hill was on Fox to appear “adversarial” in the sense that she is tough can stand up and respond. Sorry I wasn’t clear
Hate site run by Jim Kiley, associate of Rep Duncan Hunter.
There she was just a walkin’ down the street, singin’ “Doo-wah-diddy-diddy-dum-diddy-doo”
Roger.
umm thanks. I’m of the generation after Vietnam so I have no socialization when it comes to military and service and such. Not that I can’t appreciate it but just that it has not played a role in my life and plays no role in how I perceive others
Ted Sampley’s credibility runs at about zero to none, Kay…! Don’t put much stock in it…!
diary of a colleague of McCain
good reading, pleas to do so
I’ve seen a video of John McCain reacting the same way as described in this piece.
I don’t know Ted Sampley. Sorry! LOL
Quite okay. But I watched that on YouTube and it wasn’t adversarial. Adversarial is telling O’reily to go suck on a falafel
Now Moyers showing the carrier, you know: Mission Accomplished. War had just begun!!
’nuff said…
mahalo, perris…! ;-)
And all your points about his flip-flops in recent years and bowing to the will of the right-wing and administration are perfectly valid.
There have been many folks who made it into the academies with help or inside connections. Hell, I accepted an appointment to the Naval Academy (knowing I would flunk the physical). I had my choice of which service academy I wanted an appointment to due to attending an “Honor” military high school.
To be honest, I would wager that McCain’s deepest wish would have been going to any school OTHER than the Naval Academy just because of thsoe connections. He always seemed like he was rebelling against his father and grandfather.
The reality is he made it through one of the toughest universities in the country and I refuse to use his class standing upon graduation against him is all.
And IIRC from my readings, there have been some great generals and admirals who barely made it through Annapolis and West Point.
It’s a very touchy subject to Raven…! ;-)
God, this is awful: no cost, no damage Aren’t we lucky.
Is this report credible about McCrazy:
http://www.salon.com/news/feat…..ndex1.html
Basically the man is a selfish, self-centered, verbally abusive, asshat.
Oh. I don’t the dynamics of likes & dislikes of the people here. I wished I did, because I would standing less in the corner with my nose to the wall. LOL At 40 years old, it’s embarrassing to still be doing that.
made my day CTuttle
off to bed all
Actually, Thuds were F-105s. Airforce brat, that’s why I was a Navy man.
Okay, my daily rewrite of a comment I did:
“I don’t KNOW the dynamics of likes & dislikes of the people here. I wished I did, because I would BE standing less…”
Oh for crying out loud! Bad fingers! Bad brain! LOL
An education from any of the service academies is exceptional. Their post-graduate schools are of equal excellence. I respect anyone who has graduated from one.
Nite nite, Perris. ;-)
Aloha, perris!
Oh, exactly.
Does a bear shit in the woods?… Is a frog’s ass watertight, is the Pope Polish?… Oh, wait
A decent source, I’d say… I only learned about Ted’s credibility because of an *ss-chewing from Raven…! ;-)
They took so much shit, I personally would have went berserk and choked an upperclassman. The Canoe U people had to know all the movies playing at all the theaters in town and be able to recite them and the respective show times upon demand. It was said to be a memory tool.
Ouch. LOL
Yes they do and John McCain is a selfish, self-centered, verbally abusive, asshat. Oh wait. That was your point! Nevermind. ;-)
I wished I could remember the rant and where it is online, but someone used about 200 adjectives to describe George Bush one right after another. Loved it! If I can find it, I will post it.
Well, he did make me research it further, and, I walked away knowing not to rely on or cite his spew…! ;-)
Any aspirations I had for the Naval Academy were dashed when a bunch of us were sitting around talking about the chances of getting into the academy. This tough old Chief said that they wouldn’t take any of us because they’d be afraid we’d smoke one of the upperclassmen or instructors.
Do Not miss Moyers.quotes Wolfow, Kristol, Laura Idiot Ingraham; so good. + Feith; authors on Mission Accomplished. Said NYT had to hire Kristol for balance: to balance the right with the wrong.
Hi PW, What the hell’s happening with Franken?
Out of all of the human beings in his class, MCbush finished last…
It’s bullshit to say that this represents a victory or a good education. It represents failure..
This is important
Of all of the human beings in the nation, Clusterfuck was in the last half when it comes to fitness to be president.
McBush is also on the last half…
Based on both public information and some private information from someone who has worked with McBush- this is one of the dumbest motherfuckers in the entire Senate…this guy has no reason to be president.
